Heroes aren’t born; they are sculpted from the harshest challenges and rise to the top. Trained by his father to be a lethal assassin, Xan is part of an elite team of demigods known as kynigόs. He's well-respected, and he’s earned it. But when the arrogant sons of Apollo tag along on a routine assignment, an easy kill turns deadly. Broken and betrayed, Xan is forced to recuperate at the conservatory. Surrounded by lazy and incompetent demigods, he can’t wait to escape. But first, he’ll have to face the charges against him and prove them false. Join Xan as he fights monsters, demigods, and treachery on his journey to become far more than he’d ever believed possible. Son of War is an engrossing, fast-paced adventure. Blending urban fantasy and Greek mythology, this short story is perfect for readers who love action and intrigue. This is a companion story to The Sphinx series, however it can be enjoyed independently. An exclusive excerpt for Daughter of Darkness is also included.
RAYE WAGNER is the USA Today Bestselling author of young adult fantasy books, but she hates writing bios. She’d much rather tell you a story. She’s partial to fantasy, with dragons or magic or something so she can lie and not feel guilty. She also has an obsession with sweets (all the bakery goodies), nerf wars, wigs, and occasionally tutus.
When she isn’t writing, shenanigating (I’m sure that’s a word), or lying, Raye is with her family . . . preferably at the beach.

I FLOVE Xan. He's my fave, so I'm glad Raye decided to give him his own book. I also love Raye. She brings us into this mythological, yet realistic world so effortlessly. Even though this is just a companion story, novelette, or novella, it pulled me in and didn't let go. I would've loved a little more depth to Xan's comments about Dahlia and Roan, or Athan and Isa, or his relationship with his father, but that would've probably required a lot more words and made it into a long-arse novel instead. :) I feel like this gives a good background for Demigods and Monsters (book #2 of the Sphinx series) and how Xan ended up at the conservatory, too. If you enjoyed the other books in the series, you NEED to read this one.
Alright, I do like it to know more about Xan and be a bit longer around him, and I love the writing style from Raye Wagner, but I am sorry to say I do not really understand the need for this added story. For me it did not bring a better understanding of Xan, or a lot of info about his live, or of his way to see the world. Hmmm, maybe it is me. I seldom like companion books or short stories...
Thank you to Raye Wagner and Lela Grayce for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for review! All opinions are my own.
I've been in such a slump lately when it comes to my reading. I've picked up and started at least eight, maybe more, books but haven't really been able to sit down and commit to one. But Son of War was such a nice, quick read that I think it really helped to start pulling me out of my slump! I loved Xan in the main Sphinx series and this short story was so awesome to kind of remind me just why I liked his character so much and to also get a little more of his backstory.
Plot: This was a pretty quick read at 72 pages so there wasn't much of a "plot" to dive into, in my opinion. This story followed Xan as he dealt with the always wonderful Sons of Apollo at the conservatory. When a mission that should have been easy turns deadly, Xan is forced to spend time recovering at the conservatory, causing him to relive painful memories and deal with accusatory demigods. All he wants is to get back to hunting, but the demigods have their own agenda. Just because Xan is the son of Ares doesn't mean his fighting skills are a match for the destiny that the Fates have woven. As I said above, this was a quick read, but the story was a wonderful one that blended seamlessly into the world of the Sphinx series. You get to read about Xan before he meets Hope and see how he takes on the role of Senior Demigod at the Seattle conservatory. He's just as sassy, strong, and stubborn as he is in the main Sphinx series books and it was great getting to read a short story that was filled with him and his snarky comments, especially when it came to Endy! This was a great story that's perfect for the Xan fans from the Sphinx series and even good for those that may just need their fix for another story set in that world to tide them over. It moves very fast but is still very enjoyable and even has a quick cameo from a very recognizable character from the main series! The length and quick pacing don't take away from the story at all but rather add to it and really gives the reader the feeling that they're reading from Xan's point of view.
Characters: Again, as this was a short story, there wasn't much time for some serious character development. You do get to see Xan, albeit reluctantly at first, accept his leadership role and immediately take action with it. I did like seeing that small bit of growth with him, going from being stubborn and resisting the decision that was made for him to accepting and really taking on his new position. There were several other demigods from the main series that made appearances, including Dahlia, Thenia, and the Sons of Apollo. This story definitely reinforced the fact that the Sons of Apollo are, in fact, idiots who refuse to take direction or listen to any form of authority. It was just nice to see my initial opinion of them was not wrong and that they've pretty much always been that way. Dahlia was fantastic, as always. I really loved the banter between her and Xan because I felt that their manner of speaking really shined in this story. You get bits and pieces of their foreign dialect and the different way that they speak in the main series, but this one just really brought it out of both of them and I could not get enough of it! Also, I really enjoyed Thenia. She had a more minor role, but I just really like the dynamic that Xan and Thenia had. It was hard seeing her struggle to kind of lead the conservatory, but I liked that she had respect for Xan and his ability to lead and basically trusted him to help train the demigods and lead them as Senior Demigod. The other characters were good as well, but they all had such minor roles that I can't say much about them outside of that. All of the characters, major or minor, are always well written in any Raye Wagner book. This story was definitely all about Xan, however, and I really think that Raye did a fantastic job making him shine, sarcasm and all.
Writing: One thing that is consistent with every book I read by Raye Wagner is the writing. It's always fantastic. From Curse of the Sphinx to Son of War, you can really see how her writing has evolved and grown and it's such a treat to watch her continue to get better and better with each new book. Short stories can sometimes suffer due to their length, but Son of War had a great balance of description, characters, and plot that all added up to make a great installment in the Sphinx series. You never feel like you're missing out on any details, and I think this would be a great read even for someone who hasn't read any of the other books in the series. It's very easy to sit down and get lost in this world and it was so enjoyable to get back in this series, if only for 72 pages!
Once again, Raye Wagner has written a fast-paced and fun story that is sure to give fans old and new an exciting reading experience. Whether you've read all of the Sphinx books (so far) or are a new reader, I highly encourage you to pick up Son of War when it releases later this month!
This book is a companion story for the Sphinx series. The book follow Xan the son of Ares as we get a look at what happened in the past and how he came to be at the conservatory.
First, you would need to read the Sphinx series in its entirety to be able to follow along with this book. The characters that are in this book are in other books and it is about building Xan further up as a character. Xan who is the son of Ares is a hunter of monsters. While out on a hunt something goes wrong and a demigod is killed and Xan gets hurt. When Xan recovers, he finds out he was betrayed by the sons of Apollo and he is being brought up on charges for the death of one of the sons of Apollo.
I love Xan in this series he is such a strong character. He was a little more mysterious in the beginning of the Sphinx series, but now I feel like I totally understand where he is coming from as a character. In this book, we get a look at some events in Xan’s life that has shaped who he is today. The author does a great job giving us background information on Xan as well as showing us how he got to where he is today in the series. We also get to see why Xan is sometimes distrusting and moody. We also get bits and pieces of why he feels betrayed by friends for their decisions, which adds to learning more about Xan of the present day. The author does a great job with the descriptions and s etting of this book again. I love the conservatory and I feel like I know exactly how it looks in my mind when the characters are there. The author creates very vivid images with her writing.
The story is very easy to follow along and flows so naturally. This is a short novella and was difficult for me to put down. I found myself reading this in one sitting. The book has a lot of action with the reader gaining background information in between the different events. I love that this book sets up parts of the series that I might not have noticed before and adds in important parts of the timeline.
I would suggest this as a weekend read after you have read the other books in the Sphinx series. You will most likely fall more for Xan in this book!! I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
Xan spends his time hunting down monsters and kills them. He likes working alone but when the daughter of Athena asks him to let the sons of Apollo join him on a hunt he reluctantly agrees. His opinion of the sons of Apollo is that they are dimwits and does not work well with others. They have no concept of what working as team means.
When tragedy strikes doing the hunt the sons of Apollo blame Xan for what happened while he is unconscious and defenseless from injuries sustained doing the hunt.
Now Xan is stuck at the conservatory while he heals from his wounds. He can’t wait until he is better so he can get back to hunting monsters. But the other demigods have other plans for him. They want him to stay at the conservatory to train other demigods as he is the best.
I have read all of the books in the Sphinx series and have loved all of them. I am team Xan and have been ever since being introduced to him. I like Xan because he is so mysterious and he likes to keep to himself.
If you haven’t read any of the other books in the Sphinx series you can still read Xan’s story Son of War but then you would miss out on all the other wonderful characters and their stories. So my recommendation is that you read all of the books in the Sphinx series I mean you surely don’t want to miss out on Hope, Athan and all the other characters stories either.
If you like reading about demigods, gods, goddess, mythology then you will love the Sphinx series as it is so very good. I can’t wait to read more in Hope, Xan, Athan and the Sphinx’s world. I am so grateful to Raye Wagner for giving me the opportunity to enjoy the Sphinx series.
THE WRITING. I like the writing style of Raye Wagner whereas she starts off this novella in a fight scene that had me hooked eventually. I like how she laid out her characters and built them the way she intended them to be took on by her readers
THE PLOT. I honestly expected more on this novella; this is already the Xan we know, just that we get to find out what gave him his drive to be a good senior demigod to the conservatory. What I hoped to see on this Xan novella was the person that he was before everything went to hell, like get to know Ronan, Luc & Isa. But hopefully we’ll get that if Raye decided to write more about Xan.
THE CHARACTERS. I already love Xan but what this book did to me is made me understand and kind of like Oblea, hate those infuriating and idiotic sons of Apollo even more and made me sad because of Evie’s fate.
THE ENDING. I like how Xan grew as a person and accepted the responsibility that was thrust into him. I’m still hoping for that novella, you know, Xan and friends.
I received a free advanced reader copy of this book and voluntarily decided to review it
This is a companion novel to the Sphinx series focusing on how Xan came to be at the Conservatory, his relationship with his father and let's us get to know Xan better
It's action packed from start to finish in Raye Wagners unique and brilliant writing style. It really whets the appetite and helps soften the wait for book 4 in this amazing series
This is a good reading while you're waiting for the last book to be published. I'm more from Athan team, but this was quite enjoyable. I got to understand some issues I had, and that's great. Anyways, I´ll read everything Raye Wagner so... Where's book 4?
I received this ARC for free, In exchange of an honest review. I love Xan, and I was so excited he got his own Novella, I read it within an hour or so. Raye has great writing style, and I always enjoy her books. I really enjoyed getting to see a more personal side of Xan. It was nice having this book, to tide me over until book four comes out.
While I enjoyed the writing and the story was interesting enough I just don't think the story was necessary. I love Xan's character but I didn't really care as I was reading this. Not bad just not something that I think is needed for the main story.
A quick, action-oriented read great for those who want more Xan or a fix until the next book. The story focuses mainly on answering “how” and “why” Xan came to the conservatory and I really enjoyed seeing the events that led up to him accepting the role of senior demigod. I would have liked a more in-depth personal history including his relationship with his father and the incident with Roan, but loved getting another taste of the Sphinx world and seeing familiar characters from Xan's viewpoint. While it can be read as a standalone, I'd recommend having read at least the first two Sphinx books to better understand the context of the characters and events.
that one was a great page turner. Fast paced action with characters known from Sphinx series. Apollo sons were the same hateful dudes as i know them. Xan is a demigod that follows only his own will. Last chapter - crap i loved it!
And thanks to Raye Wagner once again im in the middle od deciding if im team Xan or team Athan in the series.
I really enjoyed reading this great little companion piece. I've already read the other main books in this series, so I was able to take it as a side bit of input on Xan and how he grew into his character...but for those new to the series, this story can be read by itself as a standalone edition as well. This story is another example of how Raye Wagner is masterful at twining together mythology and fantasy fiction and produce another little masterpiece. This book is YA appropriate (as are the other books in this Sphinx series), and I would recommend this boom to anyone that is a fan of mythology and fantasy; I anxiously await the next edition published by this author.
Fantastic Fast pace story of Xan .This story is a series of events that help you see the man Xan is . It brings to light the back story of his place in the compound, and the trust , and power he hold as there leader . Xan is a complex character , that has a story that needs to be told and Raye has given us a peek back at him . I loved it the action the feeling and the adventure are always present in this series I enjoyed this book as well as the others . A- FOR AWESOME
Aghh this was marvelous, we finally get to see events mentioned in the other books. Today I discovered that the sons of Apollo are as jerks as their father and also we find out the reason why xan is really in the conservatory because the brainless twits sons of Apollo bravely moved against him while he was unconscious.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review
I have mixed feelings about this short story.
On one hand, I loved getting an insight into Xan who is my favorite character from the Sphinx series. But not enough happened in this book, and it was really short. Usually, I LOVE Raye Wagner's books but I felt a bit meh with this one. I enjoyed some parts and I LOVE XAN. I'm not sure what it was but I couldn't get into this book. It was definitely a subjective thing.
I would recommend this to any fans of the Sphinx series especially if you love Xan as much as I do. Overall: I did love this story it was entertaining and I really enjoyed reading from Xan's pov. For some reason, I didn't love it as much as Raye Wagner's other stories, but this is still a must read for Xan fans.
Once again Raye was able to hit the spot with this little companion story focused around the character Xan and the ordeal he went through just a short time before he met Hope. We are taught his backstory, mainly how he got to hate the sons of Apollo and why he is so guilt ridden. This timeline we are shown in the book also sheds light on the big reason he is in the Conservatory when Hope arrives and why he is able to help her, instead of being out in the world killing monsters, as he was with his previous job. Even though this was a bit shorter than I hoped for, it was very enticing and thrilling. Raye always succeeds in bringing out a lot of detail and raw emotion in her books, and this one was no exception. I can not wait for her next one.
This book helped me to understand Xan so much better. He seemed so one-sided before this book, a jock that actually mocked the fact that he is a jock. Now though I can seem him as someone who has had experiences that has caused him to question his place in his universe, many that hurt him. There was still way too much shallowness shown in the majority of the demigods though and it feels so much a betrayal of using the word immortal to describe them.
I absolutely loved having the chance to learn more about Xan! This story really made my understanding of him expand as I think back to the Sphinx series. Xan is a complex character and being able to have this fast paced, enjoyable companion novel on him really fit well into the rest of the series. Of course the mythology was incredible, per usual, as Raye Wagner really goes above and beyond in all of her stories. I truly enjoyed this addition to the Sphinx series and can't wait for more!
I enjoyed this book, I like how this shows a little more about Xan's history. As well as how he became in charge of the conservatory that, Hope, the main character of the Sphinx series ends up in book two. When it comes to certain male character's of the series there at two males that fans argue over whom they like better. Personally, I am team Athan, but I really liked learning more about Xan's past before he met the main character in the series.
Read this as the last of the companion series to the Sphinx world. Start with the story where the curse is laid. Then read Dahlia’s story and this one last, if you want to go from past to present in order. I did it a bit mixed up. This was a very quick read, and shows character development for Xan, and how he went from “chasing Hope and her mom” to being the senior demigod in the conservatory in Washington state. (Hope’s name isn’t mentioned but she made a brief appearance ;) )
I loved getting to know Xan a little better. It was great seeing what he thought and felt when he was put in certain situations, being that he seemed to keep to himself in the other books. I loved all the banter between him and Dahlia. They really are like brother and sister. Its heartwarming to see him care like he does. Hope we get more from his POV in the future.
If you have questions about Xan, you won't have them for very long after reading this book. It may be short, but it's full of information and details that make Xan who he is and how he works. Amazing read that adds to a wonderful series!
I enjoyed this companion story but was hoping for a bit more depth to Xan's character. I know it's a short story but it felt too short. Left you with more questions than answers. In saying that, it's well written, but would've liked more :)
Loved this glimpse into Xan, and his backstory, and some of the history between Xan & Athan. Brings more to the story and why some characters do what they do.
I absolutely love Xan! This was another great book from Raye Wagner. I really enjoyed learning more about Xan. Son of War was a great read and filled with action. I can't wait to read the next book in The Sphinx series.
