Aiz Wallenstein, the Sword Princess, is known as one of the most powerful warriors from one of the most powerful groups in the city of Orario: Loki Familia. With them, she ventures into the deepest parts of the labyrinthine Dungeon beneath the city, stalking the monstrous denizens that lurk there and vanquishing them with the blazing light of her sword. But when she meets a certain white-haired boy, the encounter will change both of them forever...
Welcome to the side story of Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon. Now just because it is a side story don't begin thinking it is just a rip off or not as good as the original because this story shares some elements that make the original great as well as bring more elements to the mix making it another great series. Like the original series don't be surprised by partial nudity (no details though) and the occasional bathing scene. Of course with even more females (the story follows Aiz and the Loki Familia mostly) you can get your fill of fan service as you learn more about one of the strongest Familia and how they interact together.
The story is set before Aiz meets Bell for the first time and explains more about her drive to get stronger as well as her insecurities though generally she is a rather simple person. With everyone so strong we also get to see even more action including hordes of Minotaurs, Aberrant beasts that dissolve everything they affect, and a monster so strong only Aiz stands a remote chance against it.
My favorite part of the book is probably the cooking contest which shows several characters' personalities as well as offering us some humorous interactions. In particular I chuckled at Lefiya and Aiz after Aiz gave "cooking" a try. :)
I did enjoy this and will be reading more of the manga to be sure. That being said I actually prefer the light novel Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Sword Oratoria, Vol. 1 version of the story because of the greater detail that you get from it. However it is a lot of fun to see these characters visually.
That being said -- I would have to say my main criticism is with the art. As much as I am glad to see these characters more visually -- that perhaps is also the greatest downfall. When I see the character in one panel and then the next page or two their anatomy seems to have drastically altered it just triggers the "something's wrong" button inside me. Mind you I have precisely zero ability in the visual arts and applaud anyone who can do this, even if something inside me finds it less than perfect. It isn't enough to make me stop reading or seriously bash on the book by taking away multiple stars or anything. Just something I thought I'd share.
The first chapter was awful, Aiz complains the whole time. She wants to become stronger even though she is already the stronger member in her party. She keeps complaining about it until a monster shows up, it can squirt acid that dissolves any weapons. So her team have to run away, of course this has not effect on Aiz what so ever.
That's all we really get in this, we get a nice bit where she saves Bell, that is the introduction we got into the main series. Then there is a shower/bathing seen with girls all fooling around, where Aiz is thinking about it. She's just a blank slate there, there much personality there.
