The Seaside Saga #5

The Beach Inn

Rate this book
From the New York Times bestselling author of Beach Breeze comes a novel as sweet as the salt air by the sea.

It was going to be a rambling, shingled New England cottage converted into a grand beach inn. Nestled among hydrangeas and swaying dune grasses, this seaside haven would welcome guests on the Connecticut shore. Except the little beach town of Stony Point is no longer feeling like a haven to its residents. Residents including a brooding Jason Barlow, the esteemed architect in charge of the inn's renovation--until a stubborn, grief-induced For Sale sign puts an end to that.

But with a little help from the beach friends, anything is possible. In an effort to save the inn and convince its cherished owner to stay, the friends band together to stage an inn-tervention, shaking up their own lives in the process.

A new season of love, adventure, and heart-healing awaits in the quaint seaside village of Stony Point. So pull up a sand chair and book your stay for a page-turning getaway in The Beach Inn.

What another fantastic summer beach read!

Join me for Blog Tour Stop July 31!

A longtime favorite New England author, Joanne DeMaio returns following the unforgettable summer beach series (2017) BEACH BREEZE, with her latest THE BEACH INN, as we continue the journey with the memorable characters of charming Stony Point, a beach town on the coast of Connecticut.

Having read ALL of DeMaio’s books, and an avid fan of her work was anxious to catch up with the characters we have come to love and care about, as family and close friends. There has been a lot of tragedy and some of the characters (more than others), are having a very difficult time with their grief and loss.

“Much of grief and sadness is like the tide here at Stony Point, the way it comes and goes.”

An entire community has been shaken to the core, with the loss of a dear friend, Salvatore Deluca. He came into their lives and brought second chances to many. He made a huge impact (larger than life attitude, touching many), and his presence will not soon be forgotten.

Jason is having a particularly hard time. He had a second chance to live when his brother Neil died nine years earlier in an accident. He was able, to walk away after the wreck with the help of a prosthetic leg, below the knee.

He also was given a chance at love two years earlier when Maris unexpectedly returned to Stony Point and his life. However, now he feels like Neil is not there to give him inspiration any longer. He can no longer hear his voice.

Then Sal came into their lives like a breath of fresh air. Someone for Jason to fish with. Someone to talk with about construction, design, his father’s Vietnam war stories, and his brother. It felt as though Neil had returned in the guise of Sal. He had just given the eulogy and left shortly afterward. He feels cheated. Jason feels as though he has lost his brother all over again.

Picking up from the last book, Jason returns to his wife and home, and attempts to help Sal’s mom Elsa, also making some drastic decisions, since the passing of her son.

She had planned to renovate the Bed and Breakfast Inn (the old Foley’s cottage) and Jason was the architect. However, now she is putting a stop to the project and putting it up for sale; ready to return to Italy. The town rallies to convince her to stay and move on with her plans.

Elsa DeLuca is determined to leave; however, it is time for an inn-intervention. Operation "Make Elsa Smile." Will their efforts be enough to change her mind? They will need to come up with something big and momentous.

Sal wanted this beach inn to be the premier destination on the Connecticut coast.

Celia was also filled with sadness over the life she and Sal would never have. She has gone back to Addison. Even though his visit to their town this past summer was brief. Will Jason try and convince her to return? She also is full of surprises.

Maris is also making changes in her life. She had returned to Stony Point from a Chicago fashion career to settle her father’s estate and reunited with her sister Eva. Now Maris has left her job to take care of her loved ones. What is next for her? New beginnings?

Everyone was supposed to make a pack not to make any sudden grief-motivated decision that they would regret in time. Not until at least six months had passed. There were many who wanted to pack up and leave their paradise to escape their loss and pain.

. . . “Grieving is okay because it comes from love.”

Michael, Sal’s friend from New York has delivered all of Sal’s messages and letters, as well as few surprises for those he left behind. Emotions run high. Jason is out of control and pushing everyone away.

Cliff and the entire community hold an inn-intervention. The entire family is in crisis. They try and stop the sale of the house. Elsa does not want to think about the business team: Jason, Celia, and Lauren. It was to be the future Ocean Star Inn, and now Sal was gone, Celia has left, and her dream had evaporated into the sea’s midst.

Everyone is out of sorts with the grief. Everyone is concerned about the Inn and their loss. A place that holds all their friend’s history. However, will Jason and Elsa be able to bond and carry on with their dreams in Sal’s loving memory as well as the rest of their friends and community?

Have they lost themselves when they lost Sal? Is this what he would have wanted?

"A new season of love, adventure, and heart-healing awaits in the quaint seaside village of Stony Point. So pull up a sand chair and book your stay for a page-turning getaway in The Beach Inn."

A time of healing and rediscovery. The best place to start over . . . by the sea. They each will need plenty of love and magic connections in order to pull off the impossible.

A true demonstration of how people handle grief differently. Plus some new unexpected adventures are in store and hopefully, Sal is smiling down at all the new events unfolding.

If you have not read Joanne Demaio’s books, you are missing a rare treat. Full of emotion, heart, and soul, with vivid descriptions and settings, memorable characters and sea breezes which transport you.

Highly recommend reading in order, to enhance your overall reading experience. Still hoping for a Hallmark TV series!

If you enjoy Debbie Macomber and Sherryl Woods, you will devour Joanne Demaio’s storytelling. Characters which linger long after the book ends.

Join me for Blog Tour July 31 to highlight this special book THE BEACH INN and this special talented author. Always on my best book list!

It was going to be exquisite: a rambling, shingled New England cottage converted into a grand beach inn.

My Thoughts: All the usual characters are enjoying fall in Stony Point, Connecticut, and everyone is trying to help Elsa, who is grieving the loss of her son Sal, encouraging her to keep going with the plans they had made.  Lovely plans to turn her cottage and adjacent hang-out into an inn.  Previous books have brought stories about that unique hang-out, which has much sentimental value.

When I read one of these books, I feel as though I’m there with them.  They are so familiar to me, I don’t even need to take notes.  Although there are occasional “new” characters, the primary cast is in place, and we rejoin them in their usual struggles…and conflicts.

As we reconnect with Jason, Maris, Kyle, Lauren, Celia—and remember those they have lost—as we listen to their stories, remember special moments, and tell them all to entice Elsa that home is here, on Stony Point, we count on the sentimental journey to light the way.

One night Maris brings out the home movies and shows them to the gang on the beach. As Elsa sees the 8mm film from thirty-five years ago, when her niece Maris was small, when her sister June was carrying her Happiness Jars, something definitely tugs at her heart. But will it be enough?

Will Jason give in to the special invitation to shoot a pilot for a home renovation show? Can he finally find his brother Neil’s voice again? And will his special project for Neil’s beach shack come to fruition?

In The Beach Inn, the author brings the reader right into the story and shows how sorrow can turn to joy again with the magic of the shore. 5 stars.

My heart is just filled with joy having just finished reading The Beach Inn! I have to say I think this sequel to the other Beach stories is Joanne's best yet. Filled with captivating images of salty air, blue skies, shingled cottages, sea glass, mason jars filled with fireflies and dancing sunlight on the ocean just makes me sigh ....its descriptions and the characters in this town of Stony Point feel so real, like you are right there in the book with them. Their lives tell of the struggles they each share and how they bind together to save this beautiful Beach Inn from being sold. Poignant memories of the past are remembered. You will have tears, that spill over from the heart filled with sadness and yet with incredible joy all at the same time ...making it hard to breathe. You won't want to miss reading this heartwarming book.

Friends, Family, Home

The Beach Inn is a story full of warmth; a story about love and loss; about finding where our true home is...surrounded by friends and family. This book is my favorite of all of the books about the friends who live at Stony Point. There is something so heartwarming and tender as we watch the characters of this book deal with loss, and open their hearts again to love and happiness. The setting of Stony Point, a beach community of seaside cottages, sandy beaches, and ocean stars, is integral to the story and its characters, and I could feel the sea breeze and the cool water while I devoured the pages of this book. But mostly, it's the people who inhabit this book who fill it with light, characters...friends and family...who love and feel and grieve and heal.

I know I always say this Joanne, but this one was my favorite so far! It picked up right where the last book ended so it was as though your family has stayed right there for you. You get so involved in all the characters that they feel like family. I do so hope that this series isn't finished because I know not just myself buy many, many others want to see it to continue. Thank you for writing such great stories Joanne!

I have read all of her books about the beach friends and each time I say this one is the best one. This book is no exception to that. The death of one of the beach friends makes it really hard to go on so they make a pact that they will not make any rash or life changing decisions for a certain time frame. But sometimes that isn't easy to do.

The death of Sal seems to be really hard for Jason almost as hard as the death of his brother years ago. I know it is hard to lose a loved one. But the book takes us through this and shows us how friends and family can help you deal with the loss without you having to do it all by yourself.

The book was very touching and sometimes I smiled and cried all on the same page. I hope her beach series will continue for a long time, because each time I finish one of these books I feel like I have left the beach and all my friends behind.

Ms. DeMaio is a great story teller and you won't want to miss any of her books. I know I don't. Can't wait for the next one.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

…grieving comes from love… It’s the love that gives us the strength to go on without somebody.
~The Beach Inn by Joanne DeMaio

As soon as I read that line, a line I have learned to live by, I knew I was going to love this story.

We arrive at Stony Point to continue our visit. Elsa still grieving the lost of her son has put the Inn up for sale, taking a huge chunk of work out of Jason’s schedule. He is also grieving not for just Sal but his brother Neil as well. He has been able to hear Neil’s voice from heaven and feel him nudging things a certain way in his construction plans. Neil has been oddly quiet since Sal died. All of the characters are dealing with their grief and trying not to make any rash decisions. They all agree that getting Elsa to stay in Stony Point and to have her keep renovating the inn is their #1 priority. Then many other things will fall into place.

This story like the one before hits me on all emotional levels but things are getting a little easier for me and they can for Elsa. I am coming up on 28 months since my son’s death and I just take it one day at a time. In fact, I have taken on my own Operation Smile to help me through my loss.

I have enjoyed all the books in this series, the journeys we take with these characters are powerful. They share memories, take on new things, and together have such true friendships that keep them afloat when times get tough and when there are joys to share. The last book in this series just crushed my heart but this installment things start to turn around. The realistic ebb and flow of life continues making this another heart warming and heart healing story. I am glad it followed quickly after Beach Breeze.

These stories need to be read in order. Load them all up on your Kindles for some wonderful summer reading. I can’t wait for the next one!!

I was so looking forward to a beach read. This author seemed well liked,so I gave it a try.The cover and the first chapter were promising,by Chapter 5 I just could not take it anymore. The characters are shallow, this was a romance novel, but the love scene I read, read more like a tutorial. The story line was choppy, didn't flow smoothly. Gave up. This author is not for me.

Ummm, I guess I liked it. The characters were fun at times but after awhile they started to blend together. I felt like there wasn't enough stuff going on at the beach, which is what I came for.

The fact that this was the second book in the series dawned on me early on and probably contributed to the distance I felt from the characters and the background story.

All in all its an ok book for those who enjoy books in this genre. I don't really know which genre to put it in actually, its a mix of romance and family life for adults.

SPOILERS

This book picks up where the last one left off.

Elsa and her family and friends are mourning the death of her young vibrant son, Salvador. Sal touched many lives, especially Jason's. Jason is Elsas nephew in law, he lost his only brother in an accident a few years back and Sal had seemed to fill that emptiness in Jasons life. Now that Sal is gone, Jason is just as devastated.

It's only been a few weeks since Sal succumbed to an illness that weakened his heart when he was a child but Elsa has decided she will abandon her Beach Inn and move away. Her niece Maris, Jasons wife, and everyone else at Stoney Pointe have banded together to change her mind.

In the end they finally get Elsa to stay and keep the Beach Inn with the help of Cicilia, Sal's grieving girlfriend.
Just as Elsa decides to stay, it is revealed that Cicilia is pregnant with Sal's baby.
Everyone is happy.

There was no bad guy in this book except maybe life.

The Beach Inn is the perfect book to continue the story that takes place in Stony Point. I was immediately transported back there to visit that close knit group of friends again. This book takes place right where Beach Breeze left off. That's what I like about this set of Joanne's books—they are all just a continuation of each other and I immediately feel comfortable there.

Sure, these friends have their ups and downs, who doesn't? But I love watching them as they are there to love and support each other, even when maybe that love and support is not wanted. The friends know exactly what is needed.

I was able to escape to Stony Point for a little bit and catch up with everyone's lives, which I just love to do. And story was tied up successfully at the end but Joanne left enough threads open so that there could be other stories from the beach. Yay! I know I'm excited about that and I look forward to going back.

Joanne's beach books are great stories, with one leading right into the next one. These would be perfect to binge read this summer, especially if you are on the beach, or even if you just want to escape to the beach, in your imagination.

THE BEACH INN
AUTHOR: JOANNE DEMAIO

FIVE STARS

My summer would not be complete without a trip to Stony Point, Connecticut. Joanne DeMaio has created an unforgettable, charming beach town with remarkable, delightful characters. I would love to visit Stony Point and witness the amazing friendships, walk past the quaint seaside cottages, experience the warm beach breezes and taste the salty ocean air. Joanne’s books always leave me with a peaceful, positive feeling. THE BEACH INN begins where BEACH BREEZE ends, so please read them in order to get the best experience.

The close-knit group is still grieving over the tragic loss of one of their own, Sal. They are trying to encourage his Aunt Elsa not to make a hasty decision and sell the beach house she has been renovating into a bed and breakfast. Her dream was to run it with Sal and she has lost her passion since his death. This phenomenal group of friends bond together to bring back the magic of Stony Point and heal as a family.

THE BEACH INN is the perfect book to take along for your beach read. Relax on the beach, feel the cool ocean breeze and escape to Stony Point.

The Beach Inn By Joanne DeMaio
This book starts out where the last one left off. Follows those working/living in Stony Point, CT.
Seaside New England village where everything is in place. Lots of surprises in this book. Can't seem to get past the shanty and how Maris is shown it for the first time.
It's breathtaking-the romance and atmosphere of a great healing place.
Book follows Maris and Jason in their endeavors. Elsa at her house-not quite sure what to do yet-sell or open it as a B&B now that Sal is gone. Twists and turns in this book.
Lauren and Kyle-love her driftwood items and he at the diner. Glimpses into the past books so you are not left out in the dark, but not all the details.
Memories of those no longer there are spread throughout the book making you wish you had known them better while they were there.
Love how Neil's manuscript reflects his friends lives. Especially love all the things that make this come to life. Community sticks together to help each one heal.
Received a copy from the author and this is my honest review.

Just finished reading The Beach Inn by Joanne DeMaio. Once again she has written a story that drags you right in. The friends from Stony Point bond together for Operation Make Elsa Smile. They are trying to convince her to keep the inn. You can't help but want to be part of this beach friends group. This story shows how to get beyond grief, continue to show loyalty and friendship towards each other. I love how this series of stories picks up where the last one picks up. You really connect to the characters and are pulling for all of them. The friends find new things to explore in their lives, career changes and personal changes. I highly recommend this and all of Joanne DeMaio's books. You won't be disappointed.

Disclaimer: I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Seaside Healing

Stoney Point is home to friends that we are privileged to share in their loss, love and eventually healing. Promising the friends Maris, Jason, Eva, Kyle, Lauren and even Cliff not to make any rash decisions for one month, Elsa puts off selling the beach home that she had planned to run as a B&B with her son, Sal. When Sal died, Elsa's world fell apart. This story is how each of the friends in their own way try to discourage Elsa from leaving. The Author, Joanne DeMaio, gives equal time to developing the stories of each of the friends. She pulls you into feeling for not just one, but them all. Gentle breezes, driftwood, ocean stars, and memory jars are entwined to make this book and these friends all part of a seaside healing.

DeMaio is brilliant. Her books are heartwarming and dreamy...between the setting and the characters it is incredibly easy to get lost in her books. In DeMaio's newest book, The Beach Inn, you are once again thrust into the lives of characters that you can relate to, into a setting you want to escape to and into a story that is hard to put down. DeMaio has a way to capture the human heart with its struggles and triumphs and everything in between. She knows about the human condition and writes in a way that makes the readers feel what the characters feel, to get frustrated with them (and at them at times) and cheer for them along the way. This is another great read by a very given voice in stroytelling. A great summer read and one that is perfect for book clubs.

I just recently finished reading Joanne Demaio's book, The Beach Inn. What a fabulous uplifting story! It takes place on Stony Point, which is along the Connecticut shoreline. This is the 5th book in her beach friends saga. When you read these stories, you instantly feel a bond or connection with the characters. I love them all. And the location right on the beach is to die for. Just from reading her words, it's like I can imagine being there myself. This book ended on a much happier note than the previous, but just like life, there are good times and bad. I'm just hoping that this isn't the end, because there's a lot more living to be done at Stony Point and I want to be able to read about it!

This is probably best the series I have ever read. I am recommending it to friends and family, all of whom are enjoying it, too. " The Beach Inn" wraps up the series, but doesn't bring an end to the story of the characters. It was good to see things settle down for the "beach friends," but, as in life, all their problems are not yet solved. It was a very moving series for me and one that I lived as I read. I highly recommend "The Beach Inn" and all the books in the beach series. I look forward to the next book from Joanne.

Okay but stylistically meh

I liked in this book how the characters emotions were explored and the exploration of grief. However I personally do not like the present tense and felt that there were grammar issues and punctuation issues that made it hard to understand at times. It felt like a soap opera. It was also fairly predictable in the large moments. That being said, I did find myself feeling for the characters and tearing up when they had a breakthrough. So the characterization was good. Grammar and style not to my liking.

The Beach Inn was like coming home; coming home to Stony Point and all the friends who live there.
The aftermath of Sal’s death leaves the community reeling especially Elsa, Jason and Celia. It seems like they have lost their way and all the Inn plans and close relationships are threatened. The theme and goals is to make Elsa smile and, in accomplishing this, perhaps she will not sell the cottage
( planned to be an Inn). The end of the book is so sweet and will leave you with goose bumps and your own smile.
I have Beach Bliss read to start. I love this series.

Twinkle, Twinkle Ocean Star

If you've read the previous books in the Stony Point storyline, you are well invested in the characters- they ARE your friends and family. The Beach Inn will not disappoint; I really didn't want it to end. One bit of advice - have tissues handy. (And if you haven't read them, start with Blue Jean and Coffee Beans; you are lucky, because you can read all five in succession, and not have to wait). I loved it!!

I love how this series is tied together. It's a series filled with love, warmth, loss, family and friends. Of moving forward and the healing strength of loved ones. It makes me want to go to Stony Point! I can almost feel the beautiful breeze, smell the scents, see the sea glass.

I try to savor these books. Not rush through them. I don't want them to end.

Beach Inn was my favorite; I was sad to finish it. Ms. Demaio's books feel like coming home.

Another hit! I love this series!! Thank you Joanne for creating another great book! The beach friends are always looking out for each other and there is always a scene that catches me off guard. The characters are so real and I think if I were to drive to the beach I would find all the details in the books. I found myself reading slower toward the end because I didn't want the story to end! What an ending!! Can't wait to read the next book!

A Joyful Read

Ms. DeMaio's books are a pleasure to read whether it's summer or some other season. I like the way her novels are a continuum of each preceding story. The characters are easy to identify with. The storyline is predictable, but with interesting turns and twists. Anyone with a connection to a well-loved beach town understands it's pull and appeal; how beach sounds and smells can heal the soul. I like her books very much.

This is the fifth book in the Seaside Saga series, and it is the last one available at my library. While it is an entertaining series, it is not one I want to pay full-price (any price) to read because I do not find it that different from other series in the genre of drama within a community of friends. I feel like a gossip when I read books in this genre.
I recommend it to fans of the series.

This next book in the continuing seaside saga didn't disappoint. Filled with familiar characters, salt-air breezes, friendships and love, it picks up right after the book before it ended. I really like these books because Joanne has a way of bringing the beach to life and it feels as if you're right on the beach, sharing a secret with the awesome group of friends from the book. Looking forward to the next installment of this great series.

A story of friendship, family, love and choices. Set in Stony Point, Connecticut, a rambling, shingled New England cottage was going to be converted into a grand beach inn, but this little beach town is going through some very emotional rough times. I’m an effort to save the inn snd convince its cherished owner to stay, the friends band together to stage an intervention shaking up their own lives in the process.
