Natsume Ono (Japanese name: オノ・ナツメ) made her professional debut in 2003 with the webcomic La Quinta Camera. Her subsequent works not simple, Ristorante Paradiso, and Gente (a continuation of Ristorante Paradiso) met with both critical and popular acclaim. In 2009 Ristorante Paradiso was adapted into a TV anime series. Her current series House of Five Leaves (Saraiya Goyou), also adapted into a TV anime series in 2010, is running in IKKI magazine.
Now that I can see the weavings of the actual plot I am so curious as to where it goes! I have theories. Sure, it's very slow and there's a lot of eating and present's buying, but it's all very cute. Also, you can cut the tension between Jean and the woman director with a knife. Phew!
And I still so in love with the artwork style, it's so so GOOD. Normally, I love lush and detailed pages, but this brief yet expressive art is so amazing!
I'm not sure I've seen a creator less interested in her plot. The political intrigue just seems to get in the way of the things in which she's really interested: drawing sweets, cigarettes, uniforms and other clothing fashions. I wish she had found a better concept on which to hang her passions. As it stands, I'm not going to continue with this series.
Jean Otis continues his audit of different ACCA branches. The worldbuilding in this series is well-done. It ties in with the plot and highlights the regional differences in Dowa. Due to agricultural advances, people in Jumoku are of bigger stature and their food comes in massive portions. As a result, there are panels of Jean holding a giant strawberry and a ridiculously huge slice of toast, which makes me absolutely crack up. It's the tiny details like this that makes Dowa feel like an actual place that exists. On top of that, we also meet the prince who's supposed to inherit the throne. If you have doubts about a coup happening, you certainly won't now. He's such a piece of work that you have no trouble understanding why people are gearing up for a coup.
I'm nowhere near as obsessed with Jean as everybody else in the story is, and that's starting to chafe a little. In the meantime we have companionable scenes and delicious-looking food. Those won't sustain this for too much longer. It's only six volumes long, so things ought to be happening soon, I hope.
accidently read this in 2 sittings. Living for the Jean and Lilium interactions. And the prince that's voiced by Mamoru Miyano. Aaaaand, I'd be jealous of Jean's crush on Mauve if I didn't also have a crush on Mauve :/ now all I can do is be begrudgingly supportive and a little turned on :/ tragic
Many manga don't actually manage to show enough of the characters or the world in a way to really hook the reader. That's not really a fault, given that the visual story-telling aspect more than makes up for action-driven stories. This manga is different though. It's really more like a book in the way the author has worked at immersion and realism. The desserts, the settings, everything is just so relatable and introduced in such a wonderful way. Of course, I can't imagine a place with so many pleasant people, but there are hints to that being a veneer as well, which makes sense. The pacing of the political intrigue is just right in my opinion, and very close to how it would play out in real life. The lack of urgency is a fundamental part of having to do a job that isn't directly related to politics in the first place. The characters are all awesome!
An excellent second volume, moving the story along -- this is not a fast-paced series, it takes the time it needs, and it's not afraid to linger over some little details.
Maaaadre la decepción que se ha pegado el príncipeeeeee fan. Me encanta Ottis, como siempre, pero su compañero faenas y la jefa de ACCA se están jugando fuertemente el segundo puesto.
what are you up to, Nino? Idk about you. Nino's a great character tho. I also love Jean, Mauve, and Chief Officer Lilium. I think Lilium is my favorite character so far
Ooooo, that was so fun!!! I need to know what happens next!
Again, the world-building was amazing. Beautifully sprinkled in. There’s so much to learn about the kingdom of Dowa, and it was neat learning about the Jomoku and Dowa districts in this one. (Oh my goodness, the giant food (and people!) in Jomoku is crazy!) Man, the whole kingdom loves food and baked goods, don’t they? Anyway, let me delve into the characters, because I have lots to say about all of them.
We find out the name of Jean’s sister: Lotta!!! (And both the rookie and Prince Schwan have a crush on her?! 😵💫) Oh, she’s just too cute.
Jean is as amazing as usual. He’s a very human character. He is laid back and kind, selfless. But he does have a little bit of a drinking problem, on top of his regular smoking habit, I’ll say that. But he’s such an amazing main character, I love following him around. I root for him all the way!
I am really liking Director General Mauve. She is absolutely beautiful woman. She is strong, but not the annoying “strong” female character that litters most of fiction today. (You know the kind, the tough FBI or Secret Agent lady that wears promiscuous clothing, speaks fluent sarcasm that’s portrayed as “wit”, and won’t accept any help from a man, but sees herself equal with them?) Mauve is strong, she’s intelligent, and she’s observant. She takes her job seriously, and sees to the wellbeing of the ACCA. I hope her and Jean get together, because I love them both so much, and he obviously has the sweets for her. 🥰
I don’t know what to think of Nino these days. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? Is he Jean’s friend, or just pretending? I’m starting to question my ship of him and Lotta.
LILIUM!!!! Oh, he is HANDS DOWN my favorite Chief Officer. He’s so sweet, and smart, and his design is very unique, but cool. I loved the conversation between he and Jean at the end, and learning about his brothers. I’m so glad we have his allegiance. DON’T LET ME DOWN, LILIUM!!!!
And Knot!!!! Oh, Knot is such a sweet man, so giving. And his kiddos are so darn cute! I loved seeing them at the end. I don’t understand why his wife left him—she just doesn’t appreciate a sweet man like him, I guess. She must’ve been pretty selfish.
As for Prince Schwan… ARGH! What a vain, stupid, pretty-boy snub-nosed BRAT!!!!! I CANNOT STAND HIM!!! I don’t care if he’s the king’s grandson, I want to see him with a face full of dirt. If I was invited to his coming-of-age party, I wouldn’t be going for his sake, let’s make that clear! (And I honestly don’t think any of the ACCA members did, either.)
Grossular is still a creep (Lilium seems to agree with me!), the Rookie is annoying but hilarious, and as for Eider… NO, EIDER, JEAN IS GONNA BE WITH MAUVE, AND THAT’s ALL. GO. AWAY. Grrr.
