Jeffrey Dahmer: A Terrifying True Story of Rape, Murder & Cannibalism

Rate this book
Few serial killers in history have garnered as much attention as Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer. Although Dahmer killed seventeen young men and boys, it was not so much the number of people he killed that makes him stand out among famous serial killers, but more so the acts of depravity that he committed on the corpses of his victims. In this true crime story you will read how Dahmer transitioned from a loner to serial killer, committing numerous unnatural acts along the way such as necrophilia and cannibalism. Following in the macabre tradition of another infamous Wisconsin serial killer—Ed Gein—Jeffrey Dahmer terrorized Milwaukee for most of the 1980s until he was finally captured in 1991. Perhaps one of the most frightening aspects of Jeffrey Dahmer’s serial killer career was how easy he was able to lure his victims into his trap. Dahmer possessed above average intellect, was conventionally good looking, and usually had a calm demeanor that could disarm even the most paranoid of people. Because of these traits, Dahmer was able to evade justice numerous times, which allowed him to keep killing. Truly, Dahmer was able to fool his family, the police, his neighbors, and even the judicial system into believing that he was not a threat; but during the entire time his kill count increased and the body parts of his victims began to pile up around his apartment. Open the pages of this book to read a story that is among the most disturbing of all true crime serial killers. You will follow the course of Dahmer’s life from an alcoholic outcast in high school to a vicious predator who stalked the streets of Milwaukee. Finally, you will read about Dahmer’s trial, his jail house murder, and the impact that his many crimes had on Milwaukee.

I live in one of the most beautiful places in Florida, Jupiter, with my wife, two kids and our golden retriever, Vincent. I've been a full time author for the last 15 years and I wouldn't trade it against anything in the world!

My father was a journalist and wrote about some of the worst crimes you could ever imagine, and that's where my big interest from serial killers and other horrible crimes comes from. Just to hear my father talk about the evil acts of Ted Bundy as we were out fishing as a kid are some of my best memories.

Anyone over the age of 30 and those who read true crime all know who Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was and know the atrocities he committed against young men and boys in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area.

I've read a few other books, seen a couple of TV specials, but Jack Rosewood is my go-to guy for true crime. His books are short and very thoroughly researched. There's no fluff in these books, just well written facts about the life of ....

I always learn something new when reading his books. With Jeffrey Dahmer, one of the things that was new to me .... one of his victims had the same first and last name as my oldest son. Gave me the willies!

I also learned a bit more about his home life before his parents split. At one point in time, his father left the home and then his mother took his brother and left Jeffrey behind. Living in a house all alone was the first time he gave in to his fantasies and urges and killed his first victim.

I won't go into a lot of details, but the book is fascinating. It's a short, fast read and you'll finish by asking yourself some questions ... the answers of which are buried with Jeffrey Dahmer.

Many thanks to the author who provided a digital copy of this true crime book. The opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This book is interesting but what bothered me was the fact that there are typos and missing words throughout. Strange. But an easy, short entertaining read.

Jeffrey Dahmer: A Terrifying True Story of Rape, Murder & Cannibalism

পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়া;

There seems to be a mini-resurgence of stories and shows about Dahmer recently for some reason, perhaps we're not really sure he's gone for good, he was so scary. Here is another point in fact, a book reminding us just how depraved he was, under that facade of young guy next door normalcy, by Jack Rosewood. He seemed to grow up fairly normally. His father was gone a lot studying for his PhD during his younger years, which caused a lot of strife, but that happens in a lot of families. He eventually earned it and his younger brother David was born. Things were better for a while. But the family eventually split. Jeffrey was left to his own devices for a time. He'd already developed into a heavy drinker years ago. To keep his evil thought from becoming anything more...because they really tormented him...and it wasn't something he could talk to anyone about. Tells the story about Jeffrey's killing years after he left home and right up until he got sloppy enough to get caught and arrested.

Overall I enjoyed this book and at 171 pages, it's a fairly quick read. I gave this book three stars for a few reasons:
1) The content in this book is not overtly specific and there's not much new we haven't heard before
2) While the writing style progresses the story along naturally, it's just not done well. There are multiple grammatical errors and overt unnecessary biased descriptions
3) While interesting and captivating, I give most of that credit to the subject matter, not the written content. There's just not much here.

In summary, I would recommend this as a decent fast read as an introduction to Dahmer's, but not as a comprehensive history on the subject.

I had been wanting to get started with true crime novels for a while now and what better way to start than the infamous necrophiliac, sadist serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer right?

Jeffrey Dahmer was your usual white American boy, until he started showing interest in very unusual aspects of human biology. At first this interest seemed tame to his parents as his dad was a biologist and thought of his son's interest in human biology came from him and his works. But Jeff would soon proof that this was far from the truth by murdering 17 men and boys in the most horrendous and disgusting way possible. This book talks about his life, his family, his upbringing and his insanity and showed the readers how an all American boy turned into one of the most notorious serial killers of his time.

This was not my first time reading about Jeffrey Dahmer. I knew about him since before, I just wanted to gain more insights. But this book was mostly an overview of his life. I think this could be perfect for some one just getting to know him but this felt generic to me as I did know about him and there were no additional insights from this book.

All in all, good-meh

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I just love Jack Rosewood's true crime books. He has such a flowing easy style that is perfect to listen to.
Personally, I'd heard of Jeffrey Dahmer, but I hadn't known what he'd done. (As Rosewood said, anybody over the age of 30 should have heard of him, and personally, I am not over the age of 30). This was brilliantly researched, and I like how Rosewood went into the aftermath, the legacy and the effect on his family after Dahmer's death. This was very good.

Haven't rushed through a book in the same way I did with the first "Hunger Games", but this one did it.

Shocking, enthralling, gripping. Unbelievably good in every sense of the word. Even if you knew a lot of the details before reading it, it leaves you feeling weird and dirty and at the same time, strangely satisfied because it was such an entertaining read, despite the subject. And despite quite a lot typos, Jack Rosewood did a breathtaking job with this book.

This book is actually quite bad; very repetitive, terrible editing and eye-roll-worthy writing. The final chapter is written like an essay or thesis and analyses the psyche of serial killers in a colloquial, unimpressive way. It also has a ‘conclusion’... really?

Decently Researched But Poor Writing

I'm sorry to say that the author's style simply isn't for me. His writing level seems to be on the level with the college freshmen I teach. Lots of repetitions and labored efforts at tricks to make the writing seem better than it is.

“I trained myself to view people as objects of pleasure instead of people.”

Florida author Jack Rosewood inherited his fascination for heinous crimes from his father, a journalist covering major grim crimes, e.g. Ted Bundy. He is fascinated with serial killers – their development psychologically, their preparation for their life of crime, and the details of how they made their bloody black marks on the world. The movie star handsome Rosewood lives in Jupiter, Florida with his wife and two children.

Jack’s writing style completely captures the essence of the serial killers he studies. His astute studies of the various serial killers about whom he is providing biographies is not only fascinating reading material, but also a probing investigation of the psychopathology of serial killers. And this statement has never been more pertinent than in referring to this book JEFFREY DAHMER: A Terrifying True Story of Rape, Murder and Cannibalism. Having read almost all of Jack’s books, this newest biography cum psychological investigation is Jack’s finest to date – not only in the manner in which he ha researched the case but also in the terse and descriptive prose with which he delivers it.

As Jack states in his chapter on the legacy of this serial killer, ‘In the 1980s, interest in the serial killer phenomenon entered the mainstream media, and knowledge of the deeds of these nefarious individuals became more commonplace. By the 1990s, the interest continued until cable television documentaries, non-fiction books, fictionalized film accounts, and websites dedicated to various serial killers, became ubiquitous in modern society. But few serial killers have garnered more attention than Jeffrey Dahmer. A number of reasons factor into Dahmer’s continued “popularity” in contemporary society. As mentioned in the introduction of this book, the depraved “experiments” that Dahmer conducted on his victims, along with his other acts of post-mortem defilement of corpses, certainly continues to shock people. Few serial killers have done such repugnant acts to their victim’s bodies. Truly, Dahmer’s despicable acts are the kind only appearing in the most twisted of horror movies. It is as if his entire killing sprees were taken from a Hollywood script.

How did this young man maintain his obsession so long? ‘Dahmer had used a combination of his charisma, intelligence, and articulate nature to avoid capture. Dahmer quickly realized that most people were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and that he could use that to evade capture
and kill more young men.’ We discover the details of his 17 heinous crimes - ‘To Dahmer, just having sex with other men was not enough. He needed to have complete control over the men whom he found attractive. When he realized that just having sex with men did not satisfy his urges, he resorted to drugging men so that he could have totally submissive and pliant sexual partners. “When that wasn’t enough, buying sleeping pills and using it on various guys in the bath clubs,” noted Dahmer on his sadistic evolution. “It just escalated, slowly but surely.” The bathhouses in particular, were where Dahmer first experimented with his sleep inducing concoctions. Dahmer’s behaviors were reported by a number of his victims, which eventually resulted in him having his membership revoked at a bathhouse named Club Baths in 1987. Word went around the Milwaukee gay community about “the guy who was slipping Mickeys” at the bathhouses. Dahmer was effectively blacklisted from the other bathhouses. Dahmer once again, had to find other outlets for his demented desires.’

Necrophilia, rape, murder, cannibalism – this is Book is a raw read because of the nature of the focused character, but Jack haw written it so well that it unfolds like a novel – a very strange but also very fascinating tae of just how far the sickness progressed. This is a very fine psychological biography.

This should be the final proof that I would do best in life to never touch any book on Kindle Unlimited as there seems to be some hidden requirement that all of these books be mediocre at best to flat out poorly written as the more likely outcome possible.

I will say this book at least exceeded Poor. It gets the two star Mediocre rating for notbeing an off the wall conspiracy theory from the gate like its predecessor on KU.

Why have I attempted two books on Dahmer in one evening you ask? Simply because after watching the new Netflix series, I wanted to see how much was fact versus dramatization, hence the Kindle Unlimited temptation for a quick, free read. Such a rookie mistake.

I will say that this book was superior to my first attempt, which was the comically bad book by Arthur Jay Harris. This book by Mr. Rosewood does top that, but the bar is not high, and this reads very much like a high school research paper. The prose is simplistic and flows more like parts were lifted from an 8th grade level Health textbook than your typical true crime novel. Case in point:

Many young people experiment with alcohol and drugs when they are teenagers by sneaking drinks from their parents’ liquor stash or by smoking an occasional marijuana joint. For most teenagers, drinking and drug use are rebellion more than anything—the idea of breaking parents’ or society’s rules is exhilarating.

Rosewood, Jack. Jeffrey Dahmer: A Terrifying True Story of Rape, Murder & Cannibalism (The Serial Killer Books Book 1) (pp. 14-15). Kindle Edition.

After spending 10 minutes on Harris's book, I can say the Rosewood version is definitely an improvement, but I just could not wade through Rosewood's writing. It's tedious, uninspired, and seems like it's written for sixth graders (who shouldn't be reading about Dahmer!), and not adult fans of true crime with multisyllabic vocabularies.

I'm going to give Anne Schwartz's version a go, and if that's a bust, then I am officially throwing in the towel and taking it as a sign that I'm not meant to read more on Dahmer.

tdlr; you could do worse than this book, but maybe set your sights a bit higher in your true crime readings.

Disturbing and emotional

In early 1980-1990s, I didn’t know who’s Jeffrey Dahmer because I was listening to Tupac, Kris Kross, DMX, Michael Jackson and watching the classic movie. Jeffrey Dahmer: A Terrifying True Story of Rape, Murder & Cannibalism (The Serial Killer Books Book 1) by Jack Rosewood is a interesting and disturbing story.

I don’t know why I’m interested to read his story. I don’t understand why Jeffrey Dahmer deserves to telling his story about how many people did he killed. I have watch the movies, documentaries, and series about him. He was disgusted, disturbing and terrible person. I understand that he didn’t have a good childhood because his parents didn’t teaching him how to be love and caring. He hasn’t right to hurt and killed these innocent victims. My condolences to the victims of families.

I didn’t feel bad about him but I’m happy that he’s no longer in this earth. The author did a good job.

This book is definitely not for the faint of heart especially if you can't handle reading about a people that has molested children, drugged and rape them or graphic depictions of animal dissection torture mutilation of animals and people.
The way this book is written, it like the author has never heard of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and, simplifies the horrific third he did as if any normal and intelligent human being wouldn't understand it's annoying and the author repeats himself a lot.
It is clear from a young age that Jeffrey Dahmer was not going to grow up and become a normal person in society, he clearly had issues, with "fitting in" socialising, bullying and due to his morbid interests including collecting roadkill, dissecting animals that his interest in "seeing the insides and how it works" had a darker meaning.
From a young age Jeffrey Dahmer was always fascinated by dead animals roadkill, dissection of animals,is father taught him how to bleach or "clean bones" He dissected a pig at school which he kept and took home, he collected roadkill and took it home to dissect it, he put a dead cat in acid to see what would happen.
His father was a scientist so he taught him about animal dissection and bleaching bones skills he would later use to his advantage on his 17 victims which included 13-14 year old boys that he molested or drugged and raped. His M.O. (Modus Operandi or his motive for killing) was control/lust, he wanted to lure, control, own, use, possess and consume his victims "so they would be apart of him forever"
Jeffrey Dahmer was a gay man (which he his from his family) he tried to appear as normal and ordinary as possible, but he was very similar in behaviour to Ted Bundy, he was manipulative and he used it to his advantage many times to get himself out of trouble. Jeffrey was very charming, he was good at luring people into a false sense of security before drugging his victim, raping them while they were unconscious, removing their skin, muscles from the bones, then smashing the bones to a powdery dust and flushing it down the toilet or scattered in the woods behind his house where he lived with his family. He decapitated his victims and kept the genitals in his fridge/refrigerator till he eventually literally ran out of space, but he would consume the heart of other body parts of his victims, his favourites were the biceps, heart, head and genitals.
Jeffrey usually went to gay bars or bath houses until he was kicked out ad banned from going to the bath houses he would frequently go to a gay bar on the prowl for his victims.
Some of his victims were possibly male prostitutes that were underage, some were not gay or only decided to go back to Jeffrey's house because he "offered to pay them for a nude photoshoot" which was a ruse and never happened. Some of his victims were in financial strife so they interested in going with Jeffrey because they needed the money.

Jack Rosewood does a fairly thorough job going over the history, and crimes of Jeffery Dahmer. This book is well researched. It is well organized and well written.

As is the case with most works by this author it is an excellent short read. It is perfect for a lunch break reader because you can pick up where you left off from one day to the next and not feel like you've forgotten the important parts from days before. Rosewood keeps the timeline in order so that everything syncs up in the mind as you read this book.

This is of course a true crime and is not for the weak stomach. Mr. Rosewood is always respectful of the victims and does not linger over the gory details, but it is important to realize that the monster behind this mask was driven to commit acts that are revolting. This story could not be told without acknowledging the extent of the crimes committed.

Another point that needs to be raised regarding this author's work is that he takes time to mention other works that have covered the materials to provide an education of the aftermath of such a man.

I would recommend this work to individuals that are looking for an overview of the crimes of Dahmer. I would also recommend this book for individuals that are looking for case study material for the nature vs nurture arguments of what makes a serial killer. It would also be of interest to individuals who are interested in how sexuality influences behavior. I do not say this because Dahmer was homosexual. I say this because lust driven killers are a specific set of serial murderers that need more study before we can begin to start looking for a solution. There are far more examples I an think of that are heterosexual it's just that Dahmer does fall into this classification of killer. Finally I would recommend this book to individuals who are looking for case examples of organized killers.

Thank you Mr. Rosewood.

Amateurish writing

The author certainly shares interesting details about Dahmer's life and his victims. However, I was surprised by the amateur level of writing in his book. The book is riddled with repetitive sentences and unnecessary exclamation points (e.g. ...and John never came out of that room!)
It also bugged me that there was no reference whatsoever to Dr. Robert Hare or his psychopath checklist. While Dahmer was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder among other things, the author could've explored the possibility of psychopathy.

This is the first book I have read on Jeffrey Dahmer, and I enjoyed it. It was a straight-forward story, telling what he did, the motives, and most of the heinous details, but not the fluff. Just the facts and the details. I found it very interesting and cleared up some misconceptions I had about Dahmer. I thought that this book was well-written, easy to read, and hard to put down! I really liked it.

I would give this book 3.5 stars. I know I marked 4 but I couldn't make it only do half. I've never read much about Jeffrey Dahmer. I know who he is and what hes done, but I've never wanted to read about the cannabalism part (that really grosses me out). The book wasn't bad, but I didn't find it particularly interesting either. Maybe it's just because there was nothing worth knowing about Dahmer. His life wasn't particularly any different than most peoples until he went on his killing spree. I typically read true crime because I enjoy reading about the way the hunt went for the police. I'm also always intrigued to see if I can see a little into the persons phsychi and figure out why they done the things they did, or if anyone else knows why. Theres just not much excitement in this book. No offense to the author (I do plan to try more of his books). I also stumbled a little while reading because of errors. Not sure if it was just the kindle version or not. Overall I feel like i could of just googled him and got all the information the book gave me.

Wow! A poorly written book that adds no new information or insight to the Jeffrey Dahmer saga

I got the feeling this "book" (< three hours to read) was created from watching a few videos about Dahmer. I found no new information or insights. Worse, after reading so many excellent true-crime serial murder books by wonderful writers (Truman Capote, Anne Rule, Carlton Smith, etc.) this book comes across as very poorly written. Every page it seems has some pat phrase or colloquialism that are annoying, add nothing to the story and lend an amateurish tone to the book "Jeffrey Dahmer took killing to another level", "The stars aligned for Dahmer just before he graduated from high school in 1978", "Jeffrey Dahmer's parents were understandably upset by Jeffrey's murder.", "Jeffrey Dahmer was caught red handed and it seemed that he had very few cards to play","Dahmer needed to have Lacy's muscles at all costs.", and many more.

I read it for free on Kindle unlimited and am glad I didn't pay for it.

This is a short and straightforward book about the life and crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer.
I actually didn't know much about him except for the cannibal part and this book is a useful introduction to who he was and what he did. Rosewood gives us a simple, linear look at Dahmer's weird life.
Each time I read about a serial killer, one of the most interesting things is how they acted after they were caught...Dahmer was one of the ones that just couldn't stop talking, and the things he relates are gruesome and terrible.
As with his book about the Atlanta child killer, Rosewood gives the reader a summary of Dahmer's portrayal in popular culture since his death, including some further reading. The depictions in films are always interesting...I had no idea Jeremy Renner once played him!
A useful, quick read to get a basic story of Dahmer.

A complete story of the life (I'm sure, if he hadn't been murdered, he would have admitted to more murders, but he's dead, so he can't), including the cannibalism, the parts found in the home, the whole shebang, including his youth and the dysfuction.
As far as I'm aware, Dahmer was a rare breed. He didn't abuse animals as most do while growing up, though this book does disclose just what he did do, and why it was accepted by his family.
Dahmer is one of the most fascinating people I've come across - his brain should have been donated to science as Gacy's was (I think, shoot me if I'm wrong, just don't take a bite, though!). Wouldn't it be something? I wonder if they really do have a lab facility in the US for serial killer brains, and who's is labelled on their shelves?!
