Somewhere in the Embers Lies the Truth

A fire blazes out of control in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, leaving an elderly Amish bachelor dead. Bishop Henry Lapp rushes to the scene, and he learns the fire was no accident. Someone intended to kill Vernon Frey. But who would want to kill Vernon? Well, practically everyone—Amish and Englisch alike.

When the police point the finger at a suspect Henry knows is innocent, the bishop must decide whether or not to use his mysterious, God-given gift—one he's tried desperately to ignore all these years—to try and set the record straight. His close friend and neighbor, Emma, encourages Henry to follow God's leading.

Could the clue to solving the case be locked somewhere deep in his memory? Will Henry find the courage to move forward in faith and put the right person behind bars? Is his friendship with Emma becoming something more?

What the Bishop Saw is a story of extraordinary talents, the bonds of love and friendship, and the unfailing grace of God.

I’m not Amish but I sure wish I could attend Henry Lapps services, what a kind loving man, and yet he has had to deal with his own daemons.
The setting for this story is the breath taking valley of San Luis Colorado, and a quaint and closely-knit Amish community. What happens here is about to tear apart this group of plain people, and in the end leave some hurt and worse dead.
Now in his sixties Henry has a blessing, or a curse, depending on how you look at it, and now he needs to make a decision to use this for the greater good. As a youngster he was hit in the head with a baseball, a brain injury and that turned on a switch that gave him a rare ability.
As we travel this story to find the person responsible for the terror that these people are facing. Will they find the arsonist before they loose any more, or will be more be hurt and force some to make a hard decision to leave for their peace of mind.
These are pacifists and they are surely put to the test by the perpetrator, but why are these peaceful people being targeted? When you discover who is responsible, I had a feeling that he had been let down by society, and yet he is so wrong.
You won’t want to leave here and found myself doing some extra reading about being savant, very interesting. I hope we will be visiting with Henry and his community again; I wanted to immerse myself with the people.

I received this book through Net Galley and Harvest House Publishers, and was not required to give a positive review

Wow. I can't imagine the plotting that must've gone into this book. WHAT THE BISHOP SAW was engaging, about a bishop with a brain injury I'd never even heard of, that gifted him with an amazing gift--or curse--depending on how you look at it.

Did the bishop actually see anything to save the suspect Henry knows is innocent? If so, what... and will the police detectives be able to figure it out before there are any more fires?

I loved Henry. A dear, sweet older gentleman. There is a hint of a relationship developing, wonderfully developed secondary characters--not to mention a sweet beagle pup who turned into a better watchdog than Henry had ever imagined.

I love Vannetta Chapman's Amish mysteries -- can't get enough of them. She's a very talented author.

If you love Amish mysteries or either of the two by themself, you will want to read WHAT THE BISHOP SAW. It will keep you engaged until the last page is turned and the book is closed.

The author has begun a new series - The Amish Bishop Mysteries - with a delightful story about a group of Amish who settled in the San luis Valley area of Colorado. I don't know if the series will feature Bishop Henry Lapp in all of the books, but I just love his gentle guidance that carries a bit of humor and a lot of strength for the members of his community. I hope to read more about him in future stories.

As a peaceful, pacifist group they find themselves embroiled in and the target of murder and arson when one of their own's home is burned out and left murdered in the fire. This is only the start of a series of violent arson acts that seem connected. Yet, the arsonist also strikes a couple of non-Amish establishments leading to questions about how they, too, would be the object of the serial arsonist's attention.

Characters' experience with special gifts of intelligence are brought forth and it is shown how their gift can affect personality and development. Henry is considered a savant because of his unique ability to draw detailed images from his subconscious memory. A good link on savant syndrome is at the NIH website. A concise definition could be....
Savant syndrome is a rare, but extraordinary, condition in which persons ... have some ‘island of genius’ which stands in marked, incongruous contrast to overall handicap. ...Whatever the particular savant skill, it is always linked to massive memory.
I found one of the warm-fuzzy charcters to be the little puppy that Bishop Henry Lapp adopts added a layer of warmth and joy to the story. Delightful. Heartwarming. And the young girl, Katie, is so loveable. I am thinking she would be a strong interest to follow should the author continue the series with the same characters.

Vannetta Chapman writes an easy to read story and her mysteries are interesting and just suspenseful enough to keep one's attention and yet not get too convoluted. Character development is always a plus with Chapman's books and the story line is always well developed.

I can highly recommend What the Bishop Saw.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review of my own opinions which are freely given.

This book reminded me quite a bit of Amanda Flower’s Amish mysteries series and I enjoyed it. The mystery was interesting and there was great faith content in this book! Lexi was my favorite (;)) and I do hope to read the next books in the series. Overall pretty clean for a book with a plot of an arsonist and a murder.

"Think before you speak, but don't speak all you think" (56)

What the Bishop Saw is the first of the Amish Bishop Mysteries series by Vannetta Chapman. If you've been following my blog, you know I love Vannetta's books. The subtle messages and profound wisdom in her books are so spot on, the story continues to leave a mark in your mind, even days after. What the Bishop Saw is that kind of book.

What the Bishop Saw is different than majority of the books you read, I surmise. Most stories tend to feature main characters who are in their 20s-40s. In this book, our main characters are actually in their early 60s. That's what caught my attention at first. Surprisingly, I find it endearing. Possibly because these characters have a different mentality when dealing with situations, and with our main character being the bishop of a community, it's even more interesting to see how he leads. Throughout the book, you'll notice that being older doesn't mean you're perfect. In fact, far from it, but the experiences one gain in years hopefully will enlighten. Age shouldn't limit what we come to expect in novels, including a compelling arc, as well as a romance readers can relate to. The subtlety and idea of respect in romance gave this story another plus in my book. Isn't it how it should be?

"In youth we learn, in age we understand." (204)

The many Amish proverbs throughout the book adds to its charm. What the Bishop Saw also reminds me why I enjoy reading Amish fiction and why I'm fascinated by the Amish culture. The Amish community are "more than neighbors, but less than family. They were a group of believers bound by faith and history." (57) Indeed they are and that's why I enjoy reading about their community. Not to say they are without faults, but their faith binds them together. Aren't readers as such too? Aren't readers of Christian Fiction bound by their faith, as well as their love for reading? Humbling is what I can say about Amish fiction, as well as What the Bishop Saw in particular. It's about life, death, love and God's gifts to us. Though we may not see or understand, His gifts are blessings.

"It's a gift . . . everything we're able to do is a gift from Gotte . . . our gifts are to be used to serve one another." (81)

With a murder mystery that threatens a community, What the Bishop Saw ties all the good things in books we love in a beautiful package, including a sweet beagle named Lexi.

A reread that was just as good the second time around!

----

Woohoo -- a stellar new Amish mystery series and I'm late to the gate because I believe book two has just released. There is soooooo much to recommend What the Bishop Saw that I'm not quite sure where to start. Maybe with Henry himself.

Hello! You've gotta love a man who names his horse Oreo! And fusses over a mother kitten in the barn. And adopts a beagle pup. Definitely ticks all my critter lovin' boxes! Then there's his unusual talent which is both a blessing and a curse. I'll leave you to discover exactly what that is but, goodness, it brings a whole new dimension to a good mystery!

And yes, Henry is a mature hero -- but hero none the less. He is in his sixties, widowed over twenty years and dedicated to leading 'his flock.' Love the way he guides rather than controls -- a genuinely caring man with an incredible capacity for compassion. He loves people and it shows. And there's one point, at the end, where I got goosebumps when I realized just how remarkable a man Henry is. The perfect example of faith in action.

Of course, there are some people he loves more than others. Emma Fisher has held a special place in his heart, first as a friend for decades, but now that friendship seems to be blossoming into so much more.

There is something particularly sinister about arson and Chapman takes us into the misguided mind of a killer. Danger amps up in this idyllic Colorado community (love the unusual locale for an Amish story!) and Henry finds himself in the middle of a police investigation he had no intention of getting involved in. Great insights into interactions between Amish and Englisch and the cultural divide that needs to be breached in order to bring a killer to justice.

A captivating blend of mystery and romance wrapped up in a message of hope.

This is a great Amish suspense with real, deeply developed characters. I always enjoy reading stories about Amish culture and Vannetta Chapman does a good job keeping the story flowing and suspenseful.

WHAT THE BISHOP SAW takes place in San Luis Valley, Colorado where a group of Amish families moved from Goshen, Indiana thirteen years prior to this story. As a string of fires begins along with one murder, it becomes apparent that someone resents the Amish for coming to the community. Henry Lapp is the bishop of the group and has a special gift that he acquired after a childhood accident. He can draw a scene from his unconscious memory that is almost like a photograph. This ability helps in the investigation after a couple of events. The community unites with the local sheriff and an arson investigator to try to find the killer/arsonist. There are wonderful characters in the book that make this such a special story as they work together to cope with the tragic events within the constraints of their beliefs. Henry and his best friend's widow, Emma Fisher, have a special friendship and help each other through the events. On the other hand, the person responsible for the fires is someone either Amish or an Englisher the Amish are comfortable around. He blends in and doesn't stand out. The community is on edge for fear of another attack but also afraid that it could be someone in their church.

I recommend this book if you enjoy reading Amish suspense and this looks to be another great series by Vannetta Chapman.

What the Bishop Saw by Vannetta Chapman
This first book in a new series by Vannetta Chapman grips you from the start. Ms. Chapman has a tremendous talent at writing both Amish and Mystery novels. When she combines the two…..you are in for a very entertaining read!

When fires begin to plague the quiet Amish community, fear soon follows. No one can understand why they are being targeted. With no rhyme or reason to the incidents, everyone begins to fear their homes and loved ones might be next.

Bishop Henry Lapp does his best to spread peace and calm through the community but it isn’t enough. The Bishop’s God-given and very unique talent needs to be used to help catch the arsonist but he is reluctant to brush off this seldom used skill. Will the Bishop be able to help his people before more lives and properties are destroyed? You won’t want to miss the first of The Amish Bishop Mysteries!!

What the Bishop Saw is a murder mystery written by Vannetta Chapman. The story is Christian Fiction that takes place in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. The Amish have settled in the town of Monte Vista. Years earlier ,wishing to escape the tourist in Lancaster they had moved to this area to start a new life.
Chapman wasted no time in getting to the mystery part of the story. A fire is reported at the home of an Amish man. Firemen discover Vernon Frey dead inside his blazing house . Bishop Henry Lap has been called to the scene.
The fire is declared an act of arson. Who would do such a thing and why? Then more fires break out in the community. The Amish become a target of this arsonist.
An arson investagater, Meg Allen has been called in to be in charge of gathering evidence and finding the person responsible for the fires. Who would want to hurt the Amish this much. Someone , whether Amish or an Englisher has a personal vendetta against the community.
How much more property will go up on flames or lives lost before this arsonist is caught and put in prison.
I always enjoy mysteries written by Vannetta Chapman. I liked that every chapter bought readers closer to finding out who was setting the fires. I found myself guessing as the story progressed. On pins and needles every time someone left their home to go out. When and where would the arsonist strike again?
Readers who love mysteries, Amish Fiction or are fans of the author will enjoy this book. It's a lengthy book with 334 pages of mystery. There are discussion questions, a glossary and some Amish recipes in the back of the book. What the Bishop Saw is book 1 of The Amish Bishop Mysteries.

I am not an Amish Fiction fan. That said, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It had insightful and deep characters with a wonderful thread of suspense woven throughout the story. I enjoyed the unique plot line and all of the characters. If you love Amish Fiction, you will love this book. If you are not a typical Amish Fiction fan, you will STILL love this book! Highly reccommended.

What the Bishop saw is on an amazing Amish novel and yes I did say novel not just a plain ole story. Ms. Chapman outdid herself in this novel. This is about Bishop Henry who guides the close knit Amish community. He is a very kind, wise, compassionate man. He does run things with a strong hand but everyone from the very young to the very old love him and turn to him for guidance, so when there is a string of arson in the Amish community (targeting them) he of course gets involved. A longtime friend Emma is the one who Henry turns to (she is also a widower like Henry). Henry has a gift for noticing the most miniscule things and remembering them, that's why he is so good at solving mysteries, but will he solve this one? This one has a murder on it, and they are blaming the wrong person. This is absolutely full of faith - AMEN - there is deceit, a kaleidoscope of feelings and GOD's intervention by giving Henry his gift for solving mysteries. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

WHAT BISHOP SAW by Vannetta Chapman. We meet Henry, home from the hospital, 12 years old, wanting to go out and play ball. All he can do is draw, pencil cramped his fingers, he had put so much detailed into it. Father sees picture, like a photograph, the detail. You shouldn't be able to do this. The sadness, anger and love, he had drawn. Was this from him being in a coma. Years later, a fire, at Vernon home all gone, Henry now a bishop, would tend to his flock, to help them thru this. Glass on the inside, fire was started, why kill him, even if not well liked. Would Henry use "his gift" after all these years, he hesitant, opening Bible. Verse "saying to use the gifts he was given". He saw Vernon the night before. A compelling story of a mystery with the touch of Amish. The story captures you from the first, to the last, what did the Bishop see. Great story for a light easy mystery to read. Given ARC by Net Galley for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Review: What the Bishop Saw What the Bishops Saw is a really good mystery in itself. You are guessing from the time you open the book and the last page you turn. Who killed Veron Fry? Did someone murder Vernon Fry on purpose? Is it Amish and English.I am still surprised with the ending. The Englisher needs help as she does not get to bottom of the case or any closes. Will the bishop help save an innocent man and catch the culprit? What is Henry talent and is it good or is bad. To find out this you need to read the book.I am still wondering why this person did what he or she did towards the Amish when they did not do anything to have it happen. Vannetta Chapman gets you hooked and wanting more. You will not want to put this book down once you start to read it. It pages turner for you. Will Henry take a leap a faith and use these talents. Find out by reading What the Bishop Saw. It a compelling story and one I hope to follow more of Henry and this community in Colorado Valley.

I was really looking forward to reading this one and I was definitely not disappointed!
A suspenful novel waiting to keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what would happen next!
This a darker Amish novel and I felt I could connect with the characters much better.
I like that the author shows us that Amish people are much the same as us. Only difference is they don't believe in striking back.
Emma is a wonderful lady whom In can definitely relate to because she has migraines.(I suffer from migraines too but unlike Emma usually take something for mine. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't and I'd have to go lie down in a dark corner).
Emma is a woman full of wisdom and has a quiet peace about her that I sort of have somewhat myself.
I admire Emma in more ways than one. Too me, she is what I'd like my own mother to be.
Henry is pretty awesome himself.
He is another of my favorites. I love his ability that he can draw and it seems such a shame that he felt it wasn't a talent to be used unless something bad happens.
(I too love to draw only drawings consist of horses and other animals.
I definitely can't draw people).
I enjoyed this book very much! I even burned some midnight oil too!!!
Most often bullying starts from how a person is raised. I can relate to that also as I too have been made fun of and I can't make friends very easily and when I do they usually end up stabbing me in the back. It's why I'm a loner but I'd never ever stoop as low as this person did.
I have my Jesus to thank for that as He is the one true friend I'll ever have.
But, even bullies and make mistakes and more often than not they will catch up with you
It is a cry for help.
I'm so glad Henry is the bishop and the man he's supposed to be and for the I admire the Amish greatly! We Englishers can learn a thing or too from them like planting our gardens because there may come a time when we might have to!!!
Thank God for wonderful authors that entertain me through their books! Books are a woman's bestest friend ever!!!!
Vannetta Chapman you have outdone yourself in this book! Will
Henry and Emma get married in the future? I don't understand how theyare both blind to each other after all these years!
Love is a funny thing I guess. It can sneak up on you or hit you hard between the eyeballs. Who knows?
Guess we'll just have to wait and see!
This is definitely a must read novel by Vannetta Chapman and I strongly recommend this book for people who love reading Amish stories

A fire breaks out and a Amish man Vernon Frey is found dead. The fire department tells Bishop Henry Lapp that the fire was not a accident but it was set. When a man is accused of the fire Bishop Henry Lapp knows that the man is innocent and uses his gift from God to prove it. Bishop Lapp has the power that he can draw and see the accident. As more fires happen the Amish is afraid and some choice to move. This books keeps you wondering who is starting the fires and why are they doing it. A story of Faith and Love and forgiveness.

I instantly fell in love with the male and female of protagonists in this story. I love how she introduced a beagle puppy into the plot line. I liked how there was enough intrigue to keep me engaged, but not so much that it plagued me when I was away from the book. With a relaxing read such as this one, you have to expect a somewhat predictable plot line, and the resolutions to fall too nicely into place. That is part of the beauty of this genre. Vannetta Chapman delivered a delightful read, and introduced some interesting facts. I've never pre-ordered a book before, but I will pre-order "When the Bishop Needs a Alibi".

What the Bishop Saw is one of the most powerful engaging mystery I’ve read. Vannetta Chapman never fails to create an astonishing story in her writing, but this one is over the top. I had to stay up to finish the day I started reading—it was that captivating. Chapman has the setting in San Luis Valley of Colorado, which I could picture in my mind with her descriptive words. Bishop Henry Lapp had an unusual gift, which he was hesitate to use. But he agreed to use it after a Vernon Frey died as a result of arson at his home. The characters are well developed with some delightful ones that you would like to call family. The realistic events happening in San Luis Valley, the mind of an arsonist, unexpected twists and turns, a budding romance, true to life emotions of the characters, determination to find the arsonist, faith, and love is all in this latest mystery by Vannetta Chapman. This is not your typical Amish story, but one filled with continuous action that engaged this reader while trying to figure out who the arsonist was. I look forward to reading the next installment in The Amish Bishop Mysteries by Vannetta Chapman.

Amish-themed novels have gained in popularity over the years. Whether it is the desire to see how people live differently than we do or a longing for simplicity in life, I can not say.

This title delivers on bringing you into an Amish community (as much as an outsider can.) A sprinkling of Pennsylvania Dutch is tossed into the conversation. Yet, you also see that some of the Amish embrace aspects of English life or yearn to do so.

Unlike some Amish novels I have read, this one is more of a mystery genre than romance. There is a bit of romance included, but it is almost secondary to the overall plot.

I really enjoyed the novel as a whole and am curious to see if this new series will exclusively feature Bishop Henry Lapp or take readers on a tour of different Amish communities in the United States.

Excellent Entertainment, Thought Provoking Too

I enjoy well written books about the Amish community. This is an excellent read. I really like the characters which are well defined and 'fleshed out'. The mystery is interesting and the author had me wondering who the criminal was, then questioning myself if I had chosen the correct person. The bishop is a wise man who still seems surprised to have been chosen for that important position. His ability is fascinating and realistic as I have heard of this happening to people over the years. I honestly can't wait to read the next book in the series and learn what will happen with several of the characters that the author has developed. There are several good Biblical lessons in the book including one or two that can apply to my own life.

Amish Bishop, Henry Lapp, has a incredible gift that has been useful in investigating an arsonist in their community. As a member of the community is suspect for setting these fires, Bishop Lapp is not convinced of his guilt.

Action packed and at times disheartening, the fires continue. Characterization is very well defined, as well as visual portrayals of this Colorado community.

Consumed by the events in this creative novel, I am once again impressed by the author's talent to bring her characters to life. I'm looking forward to the sequels in this series. Vannetta Chapman never disappoints!

I've always been a fan of Vannetta Chapman, and especially love her Amish mystery series.

What The Bishop Saw was well-written, suspenseful and full of interesting characters. I especially liked the subtle romance of the older bishop Henry and the widow Emma. They were such sweet characters.

It's not too hard to figure out the whodunnit in this story, but I enjoyed the path the characters took in finding out for themselves.

Overall, 4 stars. Recommended!

Interesting premise for a story for sure! I've been wanting to read this set for awhile after meeting Henry and Emma in one of Vannetta's more recent stories and it didn't disappoint. I enjoyed the mystery as well as the characters we meet along the way in the story. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

An absolutely amazing book! I loved the characters so much! I can't wait to spend time with The Bishop and Emma again. I found myself so terribly sad for the "bad guy" in the end. Only Vannetta can make me feel sad and sorry for a killer!

What the Bishop Saw was a great book that kept me engaged from page one right up until the very end. The book is suspenseful and has a touch of romance that is endearing. I love how Chapman writes about the Amish community. She captures their deep faith as it impacts how they live each day of their life.

In a quiet Amish community in Colorado, a fire occurs that kills an Amish man, Vernon Frey. The fire chief determines the fire was intentionally set. The Bishop, Henry Lapp, visited Vernon the day before the fire. When there are no clean suspects, members of the community encourage Henry to use his "gift" to help solve the arson/murder. Henry has the ability to draw a scene in detail that he has seen before. Even things he did not notice on the surface, is able to come across in his pictures. Henry has been told his whole life that this gift he has is a curse. The community helps him to see his ability as a gift that God has given him. The drawings prove to provide crucial evidence. Henry works together with the police and the arson investigator to help determine the identity of the arsonist. He is able to aid their investigation by helping them rule out Amish suspects that are innocent. The Bishop takes his job of caring for his community seriously. He is deeply committed to them and they in return care deeply for him. But as more fires occur, the community begins to be in fear. The arsonist is targeting the Amish community and members begin to ready themselves to leave the community and go elsewhere. Henry works hard to keep his community working together to solve the crimes instead of running away.

Emma Fisher and her granddaughter, Katie Ann, are members of the same community and help Henry out by cleaning his home weekly. Henry and Emma have been friends for a long time. They have supported each other through the deaths of their spouses and are close friends. Henry is pursued by the widows of the community, but he has a soft spot for Emma. When Emma and Katie Ann are almost killed by an intentionally set fire, Henry realizes his care for Emma goes beyond friendship. As they get closer to discovering who the arsonists is, the more danger the community finds themselves in.

Chapman does a good job of giving little clues along the way that reveal the identity of the arsonist. I was not sure of who it was until right up to the moment the arsonist was revealed. I had to change my pick of who it was several times. I really liked the characters in this book. I loved that the romance in the book was not just that of young people, it involved people who were more seasoned. I found that to be endearing and heart warming. This book was so well written that it really is a must read.

Honestly, I'm not even sure where to begin. It's no mystery that you can win my heart by giving me a mystery. Given a choice I'll always go mystery, it's just my niche. However I have other preferred (please, you know I'll read 'anything' except technical manuals people) genres and when you mix any other genre with a mystery it's going to be right up my alley. Add to that an author that creates characters and setting that embraces you like a best friend and it can't go wrong! Henry Lapp suffered an accident as a child that resulted in a savant gift. That gift, later in life, brought him into the English world in a way most English never get involved with. After this encounter Lapp and many of his friends chose to relocate from their home to join a fledgling community in Colorado.

There was so much to this story to like and I'm going to tell you about some of it, some you'll have to discover for yourself. I'm gonna touch on a couple of things I struggled with though. I have to admit though, I'm not certain it's a problem with the book so much as a problem with my reading schedule. There are quite a few characters, I mean an entire community plus a couple of law enforcement and a few English as well. Now follow along because I'm totally going off the beaten path here and share stuff that is completely irrelevant to the book but completely relevant to my reading experience. I'm exhausted. Sleep deficit exhausted. Tired when I wake up and tired when I go to bed exhausted. But reading. Reading is how I relax, how I unwind and something that has been a part of my life as since before I have memories. But exhaustion and reading are not the best of friends. And reading with lots of characters when you are a person who only remembers their own name because they've had it so long when you are only able to read a few chapters at a time makes it hard to keep everyone straight and their relationships. I mean good gravy, there was a character who was sorta important halfway through the book that I don't even remember having been there. I felt lost..a lot.

Now to the good stuff about the book, not me. Bishop Lapp makes this book and I hope that future books are involved with him as well. His faith in God, his patience for truth, and his willingness to use his gift (that has caused him problems in the past) to right a wrong are just part of what I love about him. The mystery is intertwined to the story from the beginning and despite it being too obvious who actually did it the back and forth of the characters and the way it all played out do not stand as a deterrent for me. Outside of the central story line and the level that Henry brings to the book I think the ending sealed the deal for me that I love this book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by NetGalley. I was not compensated for this review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

What the Bishop Saw by Vannetta Chapman is the first book in The Amish Bishop Mysteries. Bishop Henry Lapp lives in San Luis Valley, Colorado. Henry is awakened with news of a fire at nearby Vernon Frey’s house. When Henry arrives at the scene, he finds out that Vernon did not survive. It is disturbing to find out that the fire was set deliberately. Henry is asked to write a list of people who might have wished to harm Vernon. Within days a second fire breaks out at a construction site in town. Sam Beiler spots the fire and calls 911. Turns out that Sam also called in Vernon’s fire. Sam is soon arrested for arson and the murder of Vernon. Henry visited Vernon the day before the fire, and he has a gift that could assist the investigators. Henry has not used his talent in fifteen years. But it seems the time has come to use his God given gift once again. It could provide a helpful clue that will lead to the arsonist. Unfortunately, the fire bug is not finished and Henry’s workshop becomes the next target. Meg Allen, the arson investigator, works with Henry and the Amish community to ferret out clues. Will they be able to identify the arsonists before he claims more victims?

What the Bishop Saw is well-written and is easy to read. The book has a good pace. The story has engaging characters. My favorite are Henry Lapp and Emma Fisher. They are adorable and nicely complement each other. They both have loving hearts and you can tell how much Henry cares for the people in his community. It was good to see growth in the characters by the end of the book. I loved the subtle, slow paced romance between Henry and Emma. I appreciated the author’s unique setting. I have not read an Amish novel set in Colorado previously. I found the scripture and prayer quotient to be medium level (it goes well with the book). I give What the Bishop Saw 4 out of 5 stars. The mystery was interesting, though, readers can easily identify the culprit based on the clues. There is a little suspense near the end that will have readers on the edge of their seats. I did feel that the book was a little long and some information was repeated. I liked the epilogue. It was a good ending to the story. What the Bishop Saw is the beginning of a delightful series.

Book Description

My Review

This book is the 1st book in the Amish Bishop Mysteries. Vannetta is one of the GREATEST authors who write about the Amish.

This book is about the Amish who relocate to Colorado. Then all of a sudden, there are so many fires going on and affecting the Amish. The police show up to the Bishop and want his help in solving the crimes of Arson. Then the people of the Amish know that the Bishop has this gift of drawing what he sees and he doesn’t even realize what he is drawing. So, the Bishop draws what she sees when Vernon is killed in his home. That helps them out but they are not so sure about it.

This book is really good. I could hardly put it down and I would recommend this book for everyone to read it. I am not going to say anything else so I won’t ruin the story for you all who love Amish. I love this book. She is GREAT. I would definitely suggest this book to my friends and family. Thank you Vannetta for giving us such a GREAT book to read.
