Elliott Roosevelt (September 23, 1910 – October 27, 1990) was an United States Army Air Forces officer and an author. Roosevelt was a son of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
An insider's view of ER, by her favorite son (the one she had to bail out of so many difficulties), with a named co-author, biographer James Brough. Some intimate details not available elsewhere, and some corrections and additions to the Roosevelt record. Easy, interesting reading.
I am grateful to Elliott Roosevelt for leaving us this story of his mother Eleanor’s life from 1945 to 1962. His account is political and personal. I will need to do some reading on Adlai Stevenson who she felt was the best one to continue the work started by FDR. She respected Truman, dismissed Ike, eventually warmed up to JFK, distrusted LBJ, and was suspicious of Nixon. She advanced the human rights role of the UN. She was not admiring of Churchill. She travelled throughout the world and was received like a head of state. She loved her family and remained active until the end.
I really like how her son, Elliott, gave honest, intimate details of his perception of his mother and her life. I knew she had great interest in human rights, but I didn't realize the extent. And the relationship between her and her children is a bit sad, but very real.
