I want more!

I chose five stars because I couldn't put this down and would definitely read again. This story is about angels, good vs evil, and of coarse, redemption. Amy A. Bartol has made me a fan with this series, and with the way that it ended, I hope to read more about these characters that I have come to adore.

The backdrop for the story is Detroit Michigan in present day. Told from Evie's perspective, for the most part, we see her leave her home and attend college like a normal teenager. Then things start to get freaky. This adventure takes the H and h all around the world, narrowly escaping evil, and fighting seemingly the world to stay together and protect one another (even though Reed doesn't need protecting.) 🙄 There is heaven, referred to as Paradise, and Sheol aka Hell. There are divine angels and fallen, all of which have rank based on class.

“They’re crimson because you’re a Seraph. If you were an Archangel, they would be white, or if you were a Power, like me, then they could be several other colors. Only Seraphim have your coloring, and that means you outrank Archangels, Thrones, Virtues, Cherubim, Powers…but don’t let it go to your head because you still have to listen to me while we are here,” he states, smiling.

It's all very much like I would imagine an angelic army, and a fantastical struggle between heaven and hell, to be.

Evie, the main protagonist, was very believable in her actions, and I loved her witt. I can't even imagine what it would be like to discover you are half human half angel, but the concept became real to me through her "eyes." It was frustrating that the development of her power took up until the 5th book to finally reach it's peak. I can see why it was done this way creatively, and it had no bearing on my judgement of her at all. It did seem strange that she has a soulmate and and undeniable tie to Reed at first, but once the truth is revealed, it seems that heaven really does work in mysterious ways!

I wasn't sure about Reed at first, because of his standoffish demeanor, yet he stole my heart pretty quick once he affirmed himself as Evie's protector and love. He had great romantic lines, and his confidence and capability made him the draw for me.

'My eyes lift to Reed’s green ones. He struggles to get loose from the Cherubim. “Do not do this! I am prepared to die!” Reed orders. His regal charcoal-colored wings flail with effort. He is maybe the most beautiful angel I’ve ever seen. Elegant and passionate in a way that Power angels almost never are. They’re normally robotic precision. Ready to do their duty—obsessed with killing—anxious to destroy anything they deem evil—drone-like, but not this one. He’s a knight.'

Evie

*Warning*
Do not read if you don’t like love triangles

HEA
Evie’s POV, sometimes Russell and Reed’s
Angels, demons, vampires (aka gancanagh), and more
Listened via Audiobook

Everybody wants Evie. It gets old. She loves Reed, Russell, Brennus, and Xavier. There were copious fight scenes, portals to anywhere, fans of Evie, etc.

*Spoilers below*

Basically, you have to read to the end to find out Evie’s mission. Then it ends quickly after that.
I got sucked in during the first book but should have stopped reading after the 3rd or so. The series became repetitive. Evie gets taken captive, pieces of her heart are given away, Russell gets the shaft, the Reapers are cute but useless, and the end is a cliffhanger.

There really wasn’t closure on all her relationships. Molly and Xavier deserved better endings.

Ok, I'm a sucker for this kind of fiction. I know all its limitations and am happy to ignore them, most of the time.

Maybe it's because I read all 5 back-to-back, who knows? But there were some things that ruined book 5 for me all the same.

I'm totally cool with Evie having a guardian angel that it turns out she was in love with. I get that he was allowed to be with her, torn about it, then forced to leave. But could we not have mentioned him more than once or twice in book 1, or maybe a few times throughout? He suddenly sped up to reek havoc on her heart with a very shallow back story. Russell not being the reason she took this mission is fine, too. But I needed more.

And, Molly? They're like sisters. Evie couldn't have contacted her a little more while at Crestwood? She couldn't have pined over losing that relationship when she's forced to run?

And sure, with all the talk of balance throughout the series, it makes sense that there'd be a hybrid fallen angel to answer Evie and a fallen soul mate to match Russell, too. But seriously, wouldn't that mean that Emil would no longer be Emil? That he would have lived a human life that mirrored Evie's? Is it impossible she might have run into him before they both evolved? Why couldn't we see that interaction?

Lazy.

It's like she got to book 5 and realized she'd have to finish this thing up so she threw all her ideas in and hoped it would all shake out in the end. Very disappointing.

If you leave here, if you ascend to Paradise, or even if you're cast into the abyss, or taken there by the Fallen...I will have to follow you, no matter where you go. Even if I have to pursue you into the dark...if you cease to be, then so will I. You are my sin and my redemption.

An absolute fantastic series! From the 1st book all the way to the last, I was kept on the edge of my seat with my emotions in my throat. I cried, I laughed, I feared for my favorite characters very lives. If you are looking for an amazing series filled angels, both Fallen and Divine, and all sorts of supernaturals...you need to grab this one up. 5 Star Read All The Way Through!

I enjoyed this series which is pretty surprising. I avoid fantasy based on angels in general but I loved Amy Bartol's other series so I thought I would give it a go. It's enjoyable. Brennus is my favorite by far. Reed was alright. This series suffered from too many love interests but that was very noticeable due to the format of 5 books in one volume.

Give it a go if you like ya/na about angels and don't mind love triangles.

Addicting

From start to finish these stories were well written and the characters compelling. It was a series I lost sleep over because I just couldn't put it down. Highly recommended!

Page turner

Not only was this series a very good read but it also reiterates that God and Heaven have a plan and to have faith. The power of love and that good conquers evil. It's divergent with angels and demons with great characters that you fall in love with or despise.

Such an awesome book series! It was a series I thought a lot about and found symbolism in. A great series to discuss and ponder. I never got bored of this series.

The concept of the book was good, the story was thought out and there were a lot of elements to the story. Not to mention there was a good amount of action so the pace was relatively nice. I did not like all the love interests since the book wasn't a reverse harem. I could deal with Reed and Russell but to add in Brennus and Xavier was too much. Honestly if I had to pick I would have preferred just Reed and Brennus since they were the most compelling. I really didn't like Russell's chapters and kinda hated when they showed up. It might have been more interesting as a Telltale game where you choose your own love interest and it changes the story. While I would have picked Reed it would be fun to see how the story changes based on the different choices.

I did find it interesting that she managed to turn toxic behaviors into Angel traits thus justifying them. Because of that it made it hard to read at times and to sometimes feel the relationships were good for her. This book needs to come with a trigger warning because some people will be triggered.

Her growth in the book was interesting honestly it was very subtle that at times I questioned if it really was happening but was there. I would have preferred a trilogy and if we cut out some of the love interest it would have been possible. The book would have been a crazy roller coaster because there would have been less down time. In the end I think it would have made the book stronger and given us a chance to like some of the characters more. There could have been more character development on some of the main characters that way.

Since I did like the concept for the story and all the thought put into it I have to give it a decent rating. It could have been better but I get why she went the way that she did because it did add to the story. It felt like to much extra and I would have liked to see those elements done differently. Really great idea and concept it got me thinking about if I chose this life and why I might have. I will give her a lot of points for doing that because not every story can do that.

I am curious to see what some of her future books look like and her growth as a writer.

When ignorant teenagers rule and get people killed

A 5 book series of a one book story. Endless pages of lovie dovie that made me glad I know how to speed read. An arrogant heroine who is always sure that she, and she alone, knows the right path. Despite her every strategy being a disaster a loyal group of followers who must be moronic to continue to follow her.

What I find troubling is the large number of excellent reviews for this book. Is this arrogant and ignorant female the contemporary model for a "strong female lead?" If so we as a society are in big trouble.

That said the background story (the 10% that isn't hissy fits and my love my love) is interesting. I admit I dredged through hundreds of pages of dross in search of the reason for Genevieve's creation. But then again I read fast and am retired so I have ample spare time. In fact too much. Or I would have put this down by book 3.

I really enjoyed this series, I was not sure about Evie at first, but I loved watching her grow through the series. I also kind of enjoyed when switching perspectives the writing was how the character would've spoken, it made following Brennus and The Fellas a little hard at first, but once I got the lilt in my head it was fairly easy. The only reason this is 4 stars and not 5 is because I hate feeling like an author just gets tired of the world they've created and made us fall in love with and just try to put a neat bow on it! If there is a 6th book coming then I am fine with how this ended but otherwise it made me sad.

This was the last of Amy A. Bartol‘s full books that I read. I started with The Second Born series, then Kricket’s, then Premonition. All read on Kindle Unlimited ebooks. This series was my favorite of all of them, but I do notice common themes in all her works, both good and bad that I’ll list below. I have included an “About Me” at the end to give some context behind my review as well.

**SPOILERS FOR ALL HER BOOKS**
Premonition, Kricket, and Secondborn
Please note this is a review mostly of this series because I liked it the best but I will mention and reference her other two series a lot and they are included in this wholistic review of Amy A. Bartol’s YA books.

Overall:
Enjoyed all her books and no huge negative feelings (except the end of Secondborn series). Her worlds suck me in, characters make me laugh and cry, and the pacing was great for me personally (skipped through some of the romance/sexual scenes only because I don’t really like that not because they were “bad”). Especially for avid YA readers I recommend her books and as of right now (2021) they are on Kindle Unlimited so like, why not? For more magic/fantasy read this series, and for more sci-fi read her other two.

Pros:
-Amazing world building as always. Even in her least sci-fi book series I felt I knew where I was at all times. The descriptions of buildings are my favorites. In her more sci-fi works the building of the worlds and technology is wonderful. Love seeing what she comes up with. This was more magic and it gave me the enchanted feeling I love.

-Characters all go through some kind of change or development. Really nice to see mostly 3D characters (even if some of the changes aren’t believable at times). I would say this is true for all her works and even with minor characters.

-For this work I actually really enjoyed reading the chapters in the accents of the characters (Russell and Brennus). It may not be for some but for me it helped me really hear their voices and made me smile.

Cons:
-In all of her works the endings seem thrown together. It’s like she does this amazing job at building the world and gets sucked in… then burns out and rushes to finish (as an amature writer I also struggle with this but I haven’t published any of my work). Her endings in all three of jwe series seem rushed, they don’t explain hardly anything, and leave the reader with a dull… “that was it?” feeling instead of the resolution we are “supposed” (subjective) to feel. Second Born series worst by far, taking a sharp left turn at the end that made no since. Kricket series does the best but still feels rushed, unfulfilled, and like the entire story didn’t matter. Then, this one was pretty bad too with the falling action just slowly running out of gas and cutting off on what read more like the end of a chapter then the end of a book.

-Her “tropes” are firstly her love shapes (I won’t call them triangles because in this series there are like…6? Plus the weird thing with her “dad.”). Secondly all her characters get kidnapped or forced into a living situation with the “villian” (who isn’t REALLY evil just bad choices/personality/toxic) and he wants her to fall in love with him. Third, most male characters have some kind of bravado/domineering SUPER toxic trait(a) that the main character obviously doesn’t like but let’s slide for various reasons like they’re angles (this series), they’re from a different world (Kricket), or a cast system/they’re “gods” (Secondborn and may I say WTF to that second one)?

About me (for context/comparison):
I love YA fiction/fantasy/sci-fi and this was right up my alley. Other of my favorite authors include: Melissa Marr, Holly Black, Libba Bray (highly suggest her if you like Bartol), Victoria Aveyard, & Bianca Scardoni.

I am a college graduate going into Masters in a academic/researching field. In mid/late 20’s. Suffer from depression and reading/writing are parts of coping/escape.

Thanks for reading. I hope I helped!

Let me just start with the non-spoiler-y part of this review and say I loved this series. It was well written, the characters are all lovable, the conflict is stay-up-til-dawn-screw-tomorrow, and if you love love-triangles like I do you will at least enjoy the love-pentagon. Read it!
Now for the spoiler-y bits. I had a hard time rooting for Evie-Reed and Reed in general. When it was just Reed and Russel vying for Evie, Russel won every time for me. Compared to the rest of them, including Xavier who had a much smaller part in the series, Reed isn't as interesting a character as the other love interests. Until the very end I wondered how Reed had a claim at all. Brennus even had more of a claim with Evie than Reed. I ended up full tilt Team Brennus, even after the abuse, because as obsessive and unhealthy as his relationship with Evie could be, there was something much deeper from his life as a faerie that softened the Gancanagh harshness he showed her. Evie made Brenn better, and when Evie was down and depressed because of Reed, Brenn and the fellas were what eased her out of it where Russel couldn't.
I'm slightly salty things didn't turn around for Brenn-Evie at the end after Reed ascended. I understand why, and I knew through the series Reed was going to be it unless something dramatic happened and he was ended, but I was grasping at hopeful straws up until the last half of the last chapter for Brenn and Evie (and still am, I mean totally open ended closing).
Overall, I really enjoyed the books, I binged them, and immersed myself in them. I laughed, I cried, and I screamed. Amy A. Bartol, you are one intricate story weaver.

My aspire <3

Wow, okay so I’ve slowly read this series, I’ve marinated in it, I’ve dreamt about it while falling asleep reading, I must say I have fallen in love with this series... when Genevieve and Reed first meet, things don’t go so well, then she meets Russel who has always been her soul mate, and her first friend in college Alfred aka Freddie who to her surprise turns out to have his own secrets, then she meets Buns and Brownie, who seem like two air head party girls but turns out their not really airheads but something else entirely... while running from one person Genevieve aka evie meets Zepher, aka Zee, who immediately thinks she’s evil and wants to kill her on the spot, he’s also Reeds best friend.. in total evie has Reed, Russel, Zee, Buns, Brownie and now Anya who becomes each other’s family, they will go to a battle against evil where lives are lost and souls ascend.. when Reed and evie finally find out her mission, it’s something neither of them ever suspected... this book is one heck of an emotional roller coaster, the author has such a unique way to writing such strong characters and the imagery is just off the charts!!! Oh and don’t forget the Irish evil Gancanugh .... I absolutely loved those cheeky lads, I was at first not on their side, but in the end I think Brenn and Finn as well as the others won me over, I really enjoyed the Irish language, it gave the book a completely different level of feels... I can’t say enough good about this book, I’m not a huge PNR reader, but this series of read all over again :) happy reading :)

I had been seeing the Premonition Series pop on my facebook alot over the past months. It sounded like a good read but then it didnt...Some reviews positive, some neutral and some not all that good.

Premonition (first book) was good. I would rate that a 4star. Meeting the characters, the subtle banter, the knowing anybody, making friends, new place, the conflict, the "premonition" but not really knowing what was going on.... The first impression of the series was good and continued on through.

Intuition (second book) was .... not enough to keep me interested.. I honestly got tired of Reed asking Evie if she was ok. It seemed repetitive and got on my nerves.
The second book did start off good b/c it continued from where the first book ended. I got to about 28% and didn't want to continue. It wasn't bad .. I just lost interest.. I felt like it was more of a Q&A.. Always asking questions with answers or should i say, no answers.

Give this series a try... I just wasn't in the mood.

10 star series, hands down

This series was written by a professional! Through all 5 books, the story never loses its thrall and flows as beautiful as the description of paradise. Books 1-4 have me in love with 3 male characters equally. Brennus, Reed, Russel, Xavier. The author writes them in a way that showcases only their love for Evie. But books 4-5, the love I felt for them divide and only one is left standing. The author made that happen. She purposely divides and describes in all the right words to leave one man standing. The feeling I felt the most in this book is remorse, and there’s a lot of it. Remorse for the endless lifetimes lived, until they make it to the end! Remorse for the hearts left behind because Evie is a different creature in her final lifetime. Remorse for all that was lost. And then, when you get to the end of the book, with tears in your eyes, the secret of her life is revealed, leaving you staring at the page wondering if the truth can be worse than Shoel(hell).
This just made it to my top 3 series!

Couldn't put it down. The characters are insanely well developed. The main character, Evie, was relatively realistic in her emotions and actions. I enjoyed watching her develop, literally across all 5 books. It's a series I could easily read again.

I really loved the "religious" twist on everything. The whole idea of souls, angels, reincarnation, heaven and hell was fresh and thought-provoking. I've had discussions about heaven, hell, and reincarnation with ideas from this series, with family and friends, without even bringing up that these ideas originated from a YA fantasy series.

Only criticism, and it's not enough for me to remove a full star, is that towards book 4 (maybe 3? maybe 5?) the love triangle expands, and it becomes a little much. I'm not opposed to love triangles, but let's keep it at no more than 3, shall we? It's call a love "triangle" for a reason, not a love rectangle or love pentagon.

I originally read it on my kindle, but I would love to get a physical copy eventually.

Angel's and Demons

Well, I never read anything from this author until these 5 volumes. Not only is there a bit of theology but the layers, upon layers of different angles, in charge of different things The Reapers that take our souls to Heaven. It puts a nice picture in my mind thinking that someone will be helping me to cross over. Since I read all 5 volumes at once it is quite difficult to review each book but as a whole story it is mind blowing.
Evie, is the main character, she evolves from a teenager to half human half angel. Her true love, well that can be tricky, as she loves everyone. Reed is her truest form of love. She has best friends so close, she considers them her family. Her father, that she never really has a relationship with. The Gancangaugh that were once faires but now have vampire fangs, use magic can drug you by touching you and insist that Evie is their queen.
So this story is about good and evil, your right to be accepted and to be able to love whom you choose and the war between heaven and hell.

Never rad a better series...

This series was catching from the very first page and my interest only grew from there. These books were packed with so much that I'm not able to go into details with out spoilers. All I can say is that this series will always be my favorite.

The writing was impeccable and the character development was off the charts! No character is the same at the end as they were in the beginning and I loved seeing every single one of them evolve and change. The world building was also amazing. The details were such that you were able to picture every scene the way it was meant to be. There were also a TON of questions throughout each book but I promise you, each one is answered at the end and will leave your jaw on the floor. So many unexpected twists!

All I can say if that I would give these books infinite stars and I highly second this book. Angels and demons oh my!

description
Two days and two nights to get through these books. And that's with two kids underfoot but I was obsessed to see how the battle would end. (Sooo tired...)
I wasn't interested in the romance, I mean its all been written before right? But this book was different it was more about battles and how the main character actually fought her fate A LOT before giving in. That's pretty rare in books of this calibre, usually the main character gives in right away but nope not this one and even at the end she's relentlessly fighting against everything.
The thing that made me keep reading was probably the first battle at the formal. The angels fighting in the parking lot and they are throwing parked cars with ease. I need more angel/fallen battles to be written this way. Oh and the fight with carisma(spell?) was neat, reed is badass.
The main character is infuriating sometimes, she has a hard time coming to terms with a lot but its all explained and you suddenly understand. It all works out in the end. I liked them,? Book 6 anyone?

Great book! I was totally sucked away to Evie's world. I felt for her, having some many people that want her, need her and love her. And to all the ones that love her, she loves them too. Each book brought you closer to understanding her purpose. You learn how each person in her life are there for a reason. I was worried about the last book as I wasnt sure there was going to be away to end this good. Everyone in her life, became her family. In the end it seemed like all accepted who she was and learned to live with certain aspects of her life. I am glad that Xavier lives. But I definitely feel as if there is more to who is was in these books and although he lives, I feel as if there is a part of the story about him that isnt told. I definitely cried during the last book!

Loved it!

I’ve read this series so many times over the years and it’s still in my top 5 favs of all time! It does start off a little slow but damn does it pick up about 3/4 into book 1 and just keeps moving. My favorite book in the series is #3. All of the characters are very well defined and feel like family. Although
Evie is young, she grows into a complete badass! What I find so captivating about this series is how much I loved the bad guy! I just couldn’t help it. I can’t recall ever rooting for the bad guy as many times as I did in any other series that I’ve read before. I have been hoping that the faerie queen’s story would be written someday, but it’s not looking good. This series is a must read and if you have a different opinion feel free to shut yer gob ;)

Grate story

*** there is a little bit of a spoiler in this review. But it not specific ****

I have got to say this has been an adventure. And I see a lot of the reviews I read after the book tell that there is no real closer. And that is very true pending on how you look at it. And to be honest I kinda hope that Amy here will right more for these characters because it is by far one of my favorites and would not mind an on going series lol. I've gotten drawn in to some that I end up giving up on because it's just to much but I don't see that with this one. But at the end of this it implies who she is and what she had done for her people.

This was a really great series! I didn’t have high expectations after one of her previous series that was listed as romance ended with a ton of loose ends and no romantic conclusion, so I almost didn’t read this one based off some negative reviews. However, I’m glad I did. Although it did have some loose ends, and I definitely didn’t feel complete closure, I was very satisfied with where the romances stood on the last page. I would love another follow up, especially if it’s based in the future 😉

*FYI: I have tried to change my review habits, and only give 5s for my absolute favorite books each year, in an effort to be a better reviewer.

I loved these books. I loved the characters. There were points in the book I had to take a break for a day because things got so tense that I had to stop and breath. I hate to give away anything that happens in the book but it follows Evie who believes she's just a normal average human. She meets a group of people when she goes off to college and they become friends. There's Russell, Buns, Brownie, Reed. She also makes friends with Zephyer, Preban, Anya and a whole host of others as the story progresses and brings together sides that aren't always friendly. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down! My only disappointment with this series is it felt like with Reed being the main love interest it was just assumed we’d fall in love with him. His character wasn’t as well developed as any of the other characters. He was just flat where everyone else was so multifaceted it was hard to be sympathetic to Evie’s obsession with him as he was the least interesting character in the book. I would have rather seen her with any of the other men in the story!
That being said it was a fantastic book, hard to put down and something I could see reading again in the future. I’ll definitely read the authors other series as well!

I did not finish this series. I liked the first book and found it interesting. The second book was good, but started feeling hopeless. After that it seemed like the third book was even more hopeless. I mean the first book tracked a new player and discovered all her new characteristics. I understood that the second book was about a bigger bad guy partnering with the first villain but also that the other. On-villain players also would have a problem with the new player. However, the author lost me when the third book was yet another bigger villain. I did appreciate the life bonding ceremony, but the conflict between that and the soul mate thing was anguishing.

I read this series many years ago, but I decided to read it again because I missed Reed and Brennus.

It was amazing to read their story right from the beginning all over again. Everything they've all been through, the sacrifices made along the way, the mysterious secrets unfolding bit by bit right to the finale. Everything was perfectly written.

This series will always be one of my absolute favourites. I only wish it continued because I love the world building and the layers of plot to the story. The characters were amazing, even the secondary ones. Everything was perfectly balanced to keep the reader turning the pages.

Well done to the author.
