I had never read Karen Rose, but having heard so much about her books, I thought I would try this. It turns out this might not have been the best decision as it is the 4th in the Cincinnati series, with characters from other books in the series turning up here. It meant that at times I felt a little at a loss, not having read others in the series. Nevertheless, I still managed to enjoy reading this thriller. Adam Kimble is a homicide detective who had a short lived relationship in the past with Meredith Fallon, a child psychologist. Meredith has never forgotten him and doesn't understand why he has gone to such lengths to avoid her. However, Adam is an emotionally damaged man, suffering from PTSD, and struggling to recover. He is about to discover just what Meredith means to him.

Meredith works with sexually abused children, something she feels a complete commitment to. She has been doing some intensive counselling work with a traumatised Mallory Martin. They are out celebrating their successes, when a gunman fails to carry out a mission he is being forced into. Having failed to shoot Meredith, the gunman is then shot and Meredith barely makes it out alive. Why would anyone want to kill Meredith? In a complex investigation, more deaths take place as it appears that a ruthless killer does not want Meredith to do the kind of work that she does. Adam finds that he will do anything to protect Meredith. Their relationship develops as Meredith finds out exactly what is troubling Adam. She then in turn tells him about the traumas in her own life. It soon becomes clear that the murderer is rather closer to home than Adam and Meredith might imagine.

This is a fast paced read focusing on two damaged people who manage to connect with each other emotionally. Whilst this might not have been the best Karen Rose book to read, I am glad that I did read it. It has two central strands running through it, that of the hunt for the killer, and that of the slowly evolving relationship between the two protagonists. A gripping read that I found entertaining and absorbing. Many thanks to Headline for an ARC.

These are not standalone stories. At a minimum, you need to at least start with the first book in the books tagged as Cincinnati, ideally beginning from the first book in the larger series. You will NOT understand the underpinnings of the stories. It matters.

Meredith Fallon takes Mallory Martin out to lunch to celebrate her first day out since being rescued four months ago after being held captive for six years. She’s signed up for adult education classes, a major step towards taking control of her life after months of therapy. However, what happens at that café is just the beginning of a killing spree that confounds law enforcement and the targets are unclear.

These books may be long (24 hours of listening) but it’s just so delicious to come back to them for a few days. I hate putting them down and this one is no different. I remembered from the last story that an important element (or person) was left dangling after Mallory’s abductor was taken down and was hoping it would be resolved here. Thankfully it was, which made this such a chilling story. We also, finally, learn what’s been going on with Adam Kimball...why he was so obnoxious to his cousin Deacon and put distance between Meredith and himself. Even more thrilling is we don’t know the identity of the leader, even an alias name, throughout until the big reveal. Loved that. Everything worked here from the mystery, suspense, and thrills to the romance and family dynamics.

I can’t believe I’ve finally caught up, not something I set as a goal because I’ve liked knowing I could read one whenever I wanted. Rose is the best in this genre, one of my auto-buy authors and this book is just another reason why. The return of so many earlier characters just sweetened the experience. And, Hillary Huber’s narration was excellent. Now, my wait begins for the next release. 4.5 stars

This story was a great crime thriller that will have you turning pages like crazy! I picked up this title because I battle a severe form of PTSD and sometimes I enjoy reading how others cope with it whether it be fiction or not. The author had great descriptions of the characters emotions and you can feel the intensity through the pages. I love a good crime thriller and Karen Rose definitely delivered! There are three things you always get in a Karen Rose novel: 1) a lot of bodies; 2) a hot romance; 3) a mystery that grabs you and won't let you go. What more can you ask from any Romantic-Suspense book? You can read this one as a standalone, but at the least, you should read the other Cincinnati Series books as these main characters are supporting in those earlier books. If reading the whole 20 book series seems daunting, a better series you won't find.

Adam Kimble was a real asswipe in the previous books. A pretty boy with a huge chip on his shoulder and a lot of unresolved issues. No one redeems a bad boy better than Karen Rose. Meredith Fallon is a rock for everyone around her. No one has a clue that there is quicksand under that rock. Adam and Meredith smashed up against each other a year ago and the wreckage wasn't pretty. Adam had his reasons for his hit and run, but it shook Meredith to her very foundation.

Now, someone wants Child Psychologist Meredith Fallon dead and isn't concerned at all about the collateral damage. This killer's scotched earth tactics have CPD Detective Adam Kimble facing his own demons and coming face to face with Meredith for the first time in almost a year. It's time he makes amends for the way he left things a year ago and to tell her exactly why he did what he did. Together they need to discover who wants Meredith dead and why in order to keep her safe.

Dr. Meredith Fallon counsels abused women to help them go forward with their lives. Mallory is one of her young clients who has been under treatment for months. Deciding to take the girl out to lunch may not have been the best idea.

One seated, a young man walks up to them, points a gun at Meredith, and then proceeds to tell her he's sorry, but if he doesn't shoot her, 'they will kill her'. Meredith tries to talk him down and eventually pulls out her own gun. When a shot is fired and the young man falls to the floor, Meredith is confused ... she doesn't remember pulling the trigger. Maybe because the kill shot came through the window.

Detective Adam Kimble walks back into Meredith's life after a year's absence. The attraction is still there, but there are things she doesn't know about him .. and he's determined to become a better man .. to be deserving of her.

But first, he has to find the killer that seems to be targeting Meredith.

I have followed this author for years and have never been disappointed in any of her stories. Personally, I think this one is the best yet in this particular series. For anyone who has been following, there are many characters from the previous books encompassing Cincinnati and Chicago that seamlessly make their presence known here.

The action and suspense doesn't let up until the very last page. Bodies keep falling and someone really doesn't like Meredith. But when Adam and his partner start getting closer to learning the truth, he also becomes a target.

The romance takes backstage to the suspense, but it sizzles, nonetheless. All the characters are finely drawn, and remain true to their natures throughout the series. I love how they all interact with each other. The ending was a surprise .. but satisfactory.

Many thanks to the author / Berkley Publishing Group / Netgalley for the digital copy of this Romantic Suspense. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

*I received this Arc from Net Gallet in exchange for an honest review*

Karen Rose has done it again you guys! Another nail-biting, romantic suspense with many twists and turn, with characters I've grown to love and am sure you will too. I couldn't wait to read this book, but unfortunately I had to hold off because I hadn't read book #2 and #3 of the Cincinnati series yet- I mean yes I could have gone ahead and read it but I didn't want any spoilers for those two books, and as they all connected it would be silly to think somethings wouldn' be spoilt. I'm finally up to date with all Karen Rose's books and honestly, I cannot wait to read more.

Adam Kimble is struggling with demons in his past, demons that lead to taking a year off for his mental health. His one night fling with child psychologist Meredith Fallon still plays on his mind, he ran away after that night and has been avoiding her since. When Meredith nearly gets shot in a restaurant while out for lunch with a sexual abuse victim, no one knows why. With Adam on the case, the two are pushed together trying to work out who is after her. Or was there another target? With the bodies piling up, and the threat getting closer and closer, nowhere and no one is safe from this killer.
In a shocking tale about love, hate, death, and hope, Adam won't rest until he finds out who is behind the killings, and how it all connects to the internet sex crimes case that had recently been solved by Special Agents, Decker Devenport and Kate Coppola.

The thing I loved the most about this book was all the character from previous books. The odd-looking siblings, Dani and Deacon, Faith, Kate, Decker, the O'Bannion brothers and many more. They are all like one big happy family, all with tragic childhoods and experiences, all uncovered throughout Karen Rose's previous books. The connection built with all these characters with each book and then seeing them all together, like a big family was overwelling, I couldn't believe so many amazingly strong characters were all together and happy after all the shit they had been through.

The writing is pure Karen Rose style, suspenseful-at the edge of your seat, having no idea who is behind the harm of others and what is right is really going on. She has a way of keeping you guessing, honestly, i have read all her books and I have NEVER EVER picked who is behind everything or what is really going on. That's just the way she writes, every single book is different and well thought out- that's why I spend hours and hours obsessively reading her books because I have to know what is going on.

In all, I love a good Karen Rose book, and honestly, every single one is well written and thought out, meaning every single one of her books is amazing. They are all different, all the characters are unique and the romance adds a little something extra to the mix. Another one for the favaourite pile! I cannot wait to read more from this amazing author!

4 and a half
This carries on the segment that this author has involved her readers in set in and around Cincinnati and honestly I somehow suspect that several of these characters will be revisited no matter what the synopsis says. Why do I feel this? Well honestly there are just so many characters involved here that the author would be crazy not to go back at some point and flesh them out more. That's also unfortunately why I knocked a half mark off as because it's such an ensemble piece I did initially find myself trying to remember who had done what before and in which book so it kind of took me out the story at times.
That all being said what about the story? Well it was lovely to see the old gang rally round with their protective and so very often teasing attitudes. As a fan of this series I knew that Adam struggled with events that were truly harrowing but those around him don't truly realise just how low he's driven himself. To be blunt he's a recovering drunk in love with a woman that he feels he doesn't deserve but Meredith doesn't quite fit on the pedestal that Adam has placed her on .
Everything comes crashing to a head when it appears there's a target painted on Merediths back. It all ties in with the young woman that Meredith and her friends are trying to introduce back into normal life after abysmal abuse but the trouble is there are other victims still out there with a killer determined to silence all those loose ends !
Essentially this is the tale of two damaged people connecting at what is a violent and frightening time in their lives . The author pulls her readers in with scenes from the point of view of her villain which really ramps up the intensity of the plot . It's positively frightening that such evil perpetrators can pose as essentially normal everyday folks but I get that surely that's why psychopaths can and do live undetected amongst us . I loved following the trail laid down in order to uncover just who the bad guy was but most of all I really enjoyed catching up with characters that have drawn me in previously and for this reader that meant quality time with Deacon ! However it's not as dark as some previous stories and the author found time for lighter moments as her cast teased, cajoled and knitted !
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

The very first thing I want to point out about this book is that it is being marketed as the final book in the Cincinnati series. However, having spoken to Karen Rose on Twitter I can confirm that this is not the case and there will be more! :)

So, to get on with the review. There is a reason that Karen Rose remains one of my all time favourite authors and books like Edge of Darkness really serve to highlight those reasons. Part of the Cincinnati series, Edge of Darkness features some of our favourite characters from past books, kooky siblings Dani and Deacon, Faith, the O'Bannion brothers etc. And this one is focused on Meredith and Adam. Meredith Fallon is a child psychologist who we met briefly in an earlier novel and after a one time affair with detective Adam Kimble she has been pining after him but unsure why he is pulling away and going out of his way to avoid her. But Adam has his reasons and demons of his own to deal with. That is until it all comes to a head when Meredith becomes the victim of a terrible crime, someone tried to shoot her and nobody knows why.

The investigation that follows is as tense and unpredictable as Karen's books always are. I think the beauty of her novels is that she doesn't even really offer any red herrings so you are literally left guessing the whole way through. I like that a lot. I've heard criticism before about the love stories that run alongside but I not only thoroughly enjoy them, I respect Karen's ability to mix them in, to merge two genres in one Romantic Suspense is what Karen has truly become the mistress of.

I think the love stories are important as well because they enable the series to run parallel with the different couples, this one has a focus on Meredith and Adam and previous ones have focused on other couples in their social group. I love that entanglement and follow on. We, as readers get to find out what happened after the happy ending and who doesn't truly want to know that?

For fans of crime, thrillers and particularly for the genre Romantic Suspense, this is a fast paced, perfectly flowing, incredibly excellent novel, one of this author's best yet!

Edge of Darkness by Karen Rose is one of those books that I just had to keep reading. By rights I shouldn't even like it, it is full of crime, nasty crime and so many killings. However its the fight of good against evil and I know the evil is going to be eventually overcome.

I've only read two other books in this series but I want to go back and read all of them! Some day! In the meantime this was perfect and while it is part of a series it can stand alone, although it doesn't hurt to have met the characters before. Yes there are quite a few of them. The first time I read a book in the series I jotted down names and how they are related, and hey presto now there is "no problemo".

This is the story of Adam Kimble - detective and Meredith. We'd seen Adam withdraw from his family and friends - they didn't know why and neither did the reader. In this book all is revealed as Adam becomes centre stage. Adam and Meredith are always seeking to do what is right for others, they are both wounded people and are coping with their own dysfunctions. Yet their hears are full of love, loyalty and courage.

The story ranges over about a week - it is told from the viewpoint of many - Adam, Meredith, the perpetrator of the crimes and some of the victims. For a long while we don't know who is behind the shocking things that happen and when we do find out it is to discover that greed, jealousy, callousness and evil are alive and kicking in the heart of the person who has caused such devastation.

What draws me to these books are the strong bonds that exist between all the detectives, the people who help victims as does Meredith, the newspaper team and the IT team. Bonds of loyalty, support and love are strong. I loved Meredith's grandfather, I want to see more of Diesel the IT newspaper guy who walks a fine line in terms of the law and Dani the doctor - sister of one of the detectives. The little cameos of fun and humour don't hurt either.

Fast paced, full of tension, fantastic characters and a plot that took me away from my world into another. Can't ask for more.

Edge of Darkness is book twenty of the romantic suspense series by Karen Rose. Meredith Fallon was out having lunch with Mallory helping her to come out in public again after a trauma. However, for Mallory and Meredith, the lunch turned out differently than they had hoped when a murder occurred before them. The first person Meredith called was Homicide Detective Adam Kimble. The readers of Edge of Darkness will continue to follow Meredith Fallon and Detective Adam Kimble to find out what happens.

Edge of Darkness was one of these books you have trouble putting down until the end. Reading Edge of Darkness, I engaged with the story and the characters and forgot about going to sleep. Lucky for me, it was a Friday Night. I love Karen Rose's portrayal of her characters and the way they interact with each other throughout this book. Edge of Darkness is well-written and researched by Karen Rose. I like Karen Rose's description of the settings of Edge of Darkness, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Edge of Darkness will learn about the importance of having a safe place for victims of sexual abuse. Also, the readers of Edge of Darkness will understand animals' role in helping people heal after trauma.

I recommend this book.

In EDGE OF DARKNESS Meredith and Adam are both battling their demons. When someone tries to kill Meredith, they have to work together and find out who wants her dead.

“Because life's too short to read depressing books”
― Susan Elizabeth Phillips

SEP's quote jumped to my mind when I read this thriller. Everyone who has read Karen Rose know that she craft multilayered plots with lots of twist and turns, and she create ruthless killers who leave behind the pile of bodies. Have to say that her stories can become tiresome to read when you have to witness so much violence and evil.

I wish the story didn't switch so much between different characters and sub-plots. I felt there were too many POVs. It was hard to warm up to many of the side characters. Sorry but I strongly dislike to read villains/bad guys chapters. Its nasty to be in their heads. See how they have no remorse as they get rid of people/partners who's become redundant or gets in their way. Besides lots of events were already revealed thanks to those POVs, so for me the mystery/thrill became weaker, no longer surpising.

Overall its grim, dark, sad story to read. So be warned! But fortunately there were not so many torture scenes like in some of KR's previous books.

I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. I was absorbed throughout this 600+ page book with all the exciting action and twists and turns. I liked seeing characters from early books. Heroine was terrific and hero eventually atoned. Psychologist Meredith is held at gunpoint, barely escapes and in panic calls old flame detective Adam who leads what turns into a complex investigation.

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Karen Rose writes amazing characters grabbing my heart and stomping on it,  in a world of dark, mysterious suspense. She has built a frighteningly realistic world of criminals, law enforcement, and those who help the victims. The couples in each book have struggled with their lives and careers but they fight so hard and deserve love and their happiness. I feel them all so deeply.

Every time I pick up a new book, I know it will be great. I will love the characters and their unfolding to me and their growth. The criminals will be horrifying; the cases will be clever and heartbreaking. People do get hurt and die. Our couple will win in the end; each book is a new couple. The romances are handled well, both the emotional aspects and the sexy times. I only dislike how sometimes I can't remember things from the previous books.

Adam and Meredith are characters anyone could love. They are smart,  work hard and do much to take care of others. Adam is in law enforcement and Meredith is a counselor for children and adolescents. They are part of a wide circle of friends and family in the Cincinnati part of the Romantic Suspense series , who are most often in one of those two types of jobs. Her work partner, Faith, was the main character in Closer Than You Think, which is number 16 in the series, but the first Cincinnati book. It was the first book I read in the series. I went back to read the previous 15 books. Reading them all together was awesome. It's harder now with reading new books spaced out over their releases.

Edge of Darkness is an excellent story. It will mean more, if you read the other books and know the other characters with their quirks and humor.  I highly recommend the whole series, one of my favorites in the genre. Yes, there are 20 books, 20 long books and well worth reading as they are consistently wonderful.

Giggle-worthy quote:
Meredith took the picture, her mouth curving of its own volition. Two boys in baseball uniforms stood, arms over each other's shoulders. One dark, one light. The boy on the right was clearly Adam Kimble. He had boyish good looks even then. Both wore grass stains on their knees and huge smiles on their faces. "How old were you?"

"He was sixteen. I was almost eighteen.  We were only a grade apart, though. Adam was a fair student, but I'd been held back a year in middle school, which I basically hated the world for, but it turned out okay. If I hadn't been kept back, I would've graduated two years ahead of him and we wouldn't have played for the same team in high school. Those were the good days."

She smiled fondly at the photo. "Did you win?"

"Went to the state playoffs, but lost in the quarterfinals. Adam played another year. That year they went on to win the state championships. Adam ended up getting a baseball scholarship to college, which was good because with his grades? Well, let's just say it was good he could hit a home run like nobody else, because he was never gonna ace math."

***ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review***

Edge of Darkness is fourth book in the Cincinnati series by Karen Rose. It is a gripping and emotional romantic suspense novel. The main characters are interesting and well-developed and the story moves along quickly, drawing you from one twist to the next. However, while it is a stand-alone novel, the sheer number of characters can get confusing if you haven’t read the previous books. Edge of Darkness has a fascinating cast of recurring characters, but this novel focuses on Meredith Fallon and Adam Kimble.

After their “one-night stand” last year, Meredith knows that Adam has been avoiding her. She’s hurt, but as a counselor she knows that Adam, a police detective, is suffering from PTSD resulting from a bad case last year and needs to focus on himself and she doesn’t want to be a distraction. Well, she’d rather be with him and supportive, but he doesn’t seem to want that. Adam is doing everything he can to remain a part of Meredith’s life, while not actually being a part of her life. He spends much of his free time supporting Mariposa House where Meredith works counseling sexually abused women like Mallory Martin to help them reintegrate into the world, but scheduling his time so he doesn’t run into Meredith.

Meredith and Mallory are sitting down to enjoy a celebratory lunch, when a young man comes into the restaurant with a gun. Apparently, someone does not want Meredith helping women like Mallory and will resort to extreme measures to stop her. Adam and Meredith are forced back together as Adam is called into investigate. Can Adam protect Meredith and still keep his distance from her?

There are so many questions and interesting sub-stories. Each time you think you’ve got it figured out, Karen Rose throws in a twist to keep you guessing right until the end.

I really enjoyed Edge of Darkness and look forward to reading more by Karen Rose particularly the Brooklyn series. I highly recommend this romantic suspense. 4.5 stars

Yay! So we finally got to Adam and Meredith's story! For the most part, this book had a nice fast pace, but it did get a little bogged down in parts. Much as I love Karen Rose's books, I really think they could benefit by knocking a 100 or so pages off of the length.

Having said that, I found myself wavering between suspects for most of the book. This author is almost always able to keep you guessing until she's finally ready to reveal the "baddie."

Looking forward to the next book, and hoping she gets to Dani and Diesel's story soon!

He kept away for a year and she's all but given up hope until her life is threatened. Now? All good intentions are laid aside as they race to stop a horrific murderer on the streets of Cincinnati. Each page seemed to sizzle with thrilling intensity and I could not put this book down.

Edge of Darkness brings us back to the Cincinnati series as book four. Each book could probably be okay standalone or out of order, but is optimally enjoyed when read in order so all the connections and mentions of past situations make better sense. Both the main characters were introduced in the first Cincinnati book and have been staples all along. I was so glad they got their story.

Adam has been fighting personal demons that make him push away his friends and family and even a chance at love with seemingly sunny Meredith Fallon. Meredith has her own demons, but she's good at hiding them behind a smiling mask and cheerful, compassionate demeanor. But, now Meredith is nearly shot by a sniper and the killer has plans to cut off all the loose ends that threaten his secret underworld dealings while he poses as an upstanding citizen. Adam, in his work to bring the killer down and protect others stands right in the crosshairs of a killer's sniper rifle.

Each book in this series are veritable doorstoppers in size, but after the first one I tried, I was not intimidated by that. They read fast and frenzied. The killers are truly evil and cunning so the law enforcement group is kept on their toes and in high danger the whole time. Human misery and darkness gets explored in each book. Edge of Darkness shines light into the murky world of vulnerable young people exploited and used by organized criminals who see them as commodities and not people. It also shows the vulnerable and raw toll that people in law enforcement pay to serve and protect.

Adam and Meredith's story was one that really tugged at me. He has hit the very bottom and is hurting and alone craving the drink to blot out the nightmare images he sees each night and the PTSD flashbacks he gets while working his cases. Meredith assumes that Adam stays away because he's not interested and it breaks her heart to have her interest unrequited. She's amazing in many ways as the one always giving to others and surrounding herself with a great group of friends and family. Adam sees right through her screen of happiness and realizes when he almost loses her that staying away was the wrong move.

Adam and the wide group of law enforcement team have quite the complex case to untangle even as the killer and his allies are destroying any trail they have left behind. Normally, I find the inclusion of the antagonist's thoughts and narration to cause a let down and loss of good tension in a story, but Karen Rose has a gift for using it to advantage. It never helps having the killer get his own narration and scenes because invariably I still have no idea until near the end just who it is. Evil can reside under any smiling, friendly, even helpful countenance and she proves this yet again. I thought it was masterful how she slowly peeled back the killer's agenda, but several gasp-worthy motivations especially near the end.

The story line does not shy away from brutality and the truly insidious things humans can do to each other, but I think this gives these stories a sense of urgency and the thriller quality as the good guys push hard to bring it to an end. The pace on this book was perfect from cover to cover. It never stops moving forward at a good speed and still doesn't skimp on character and relationship development. I loved seeing Adam work his way through his alcoholism and PTSD and I loved seeing him and Meredith finally get their chance. The author handled the mental health issues well as well as the appropriate response in treatment that result in what the people of her story goes through.

Other characters and side stories were present. I loved seeing Dr. Dani Novak, Diesel the brilliant hacker, Meredith's colorful grandfather, and several other old and newer characters shine as secondary characters. My heart went out to those foster kids who are now trying to make a good life after what they were dealt in their youth just as I was happy to see Mallory and the other young women who had been sexually exploited getting a new start. These other stories never distracted, but instead added depth to the main plot.

I can't wait to see what comes next for the Cincinnati group though I read the sample at the back and know that the Baltimore series is getting the next book and I need to catch up from the beginning on those first. For those looking for an emotionally engaging, in-depth thriller romance, I heartily recommend this author's books, but in particular the Cincinnati series.

My thanks to Penguin-Random House for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I fell behind on Rose's series last year, but I'm making up for it in the first weeks of the new decade. And FINALLY, the one I've been waiting for with Adam Kimble, the tortured and gorgeous soul and our beloved psychologist, Meredith Fallon. Oh how much I loved their story. As always Karen Rose leaves not a stone unturned with outstanding precision in every detail. From the character developments to the settings, to the oh so terrible and horrendous bad buys, to the comradeship between the various law enforcement agencies, families and personal relationships and all the tempting peeks at new possibilities on the horizon. A reader really gets to know them from the inside out.

Karen Rose did not disappoint with EDGE OF DARKNESS. It was everything I imagined from this author for two of my favorite characters, Adam and Merry.

Edge of darkness by karen rose.
Homicide detective Adam Kimble is no stranger to battling demons. But Meredith Fallon is a different kind of weakness: one that could actually be good for him, if only he would let himself depend on her. Meredith has loved Adam for a year, and seeing how hard he's worked to deal with his PTSD makes her feelings only stronger, but she respects his needs. Her work keeps her busy anyway: she counsels sexually abused women like Mallory Martin to help them reintegrate into the world.
A fantastic read. Loved the characters and the story. 5*.

Edge of Darkness is everything I love about great romantic suspense! Here are the reasons I think you will love it too:

Great characters: Meredith is a child psychologist but also suffers from depression. She has self harmed and attempted suicide in the past. She still struggles at times and it made her a very believable character. Adam is a recovering alcoholic who struggles daily. Again, this made him relatable and flawed.
Fun supporting characters: their circle of friends is filled with fun people. Kate, the FBI agent who knits, Clarke, Meredith's video game creating grandfather, Diesel, the hacker. They add a lot of depth to the story. I can't wait to read more about them.
Location: As a citizen of Cincinnati, I loved hearing about places in my town! It was great when she would mention Fountain Square, Columbia Parkway, etc.
Suspense/Mystery: The plot revolves around a truly horrific act-human trafficking. The story is well written though and Rose doesn't exploit the topic for shock value or anything. You really feel like you are solving the crime with them. The entire book takes place over a weekend and you get glimpses into Meredith, Adam, a young hooker named Linnea, and the bad guy.
Heartbreaking: Linnea's story had me in tears. This was a problem because I was listening while I drove. Driving and crying are not a good mix. But, man, its impossible to not care about this girl!

So, those are my 5 reasons you should read Edge of Darkness! I haven't read the previous 3 books in the Cincinnati series, but I plan to. The audio is perfect by the way. My biggest struggle was not having whisper sync because I had the paperback and not the ebook!

POV: 3rd
Tears: yes
Trope: second chance romance, police/FBI
Triggers:
Series/Standalone: stand alone
Cliffhanger:
HEA:

Be a Good Girl by Tess Diamond, Smoke and Mirrors by Julie Rowe, A Cold Dark Place by Toni Anderson...then you will probably like Edge of Darkness!

FINALLY got around to reading the previous novels in this series so that I could read and review this one. Check one for Meg not making sure a book isn't part of a series.

This is the final novel in this series, so make sure you have read the others first as well. This novel was fast paced and everything that I wanted for this read. A thrilling hunt for a killer while simultaneously a story about falling in love? The Law and Order fan in me was all over it.

Absolutely gripping. Reminded me of Lisa Renee Jone's new novel coming out in March.

I'm all about the thrillers lately guys. All about them.

Meredith is a woman who fights for abused children and when stone tries to kill her, her life is thrown into a bit of a mess.

Throw Adam into the mix and his wants in protecting her and let the romance brew right along with the chaos!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Headline for an advance copy of Edge of Darkness, the fourth novel in the Cincinnati series.

Meredith Fallon is celebrating the progress Mallory Martin, a young victim of abuse whom she has been counselling, has made in her recovery by taking her for lunch. They have hardly sat down when a reluctant gunman approaches them and tells them to run. In the ensuing standoff the gunman is shot in the head and dies and Meredith barely escapes a second bullet. Shaken she calls detective Adam Kimball, a man she has unrequitedly loved for over a year while he has been avoiding her as he has his own troubles to resolve. The hunt for the killer puts them and their friends in danger.

I thoroughly enjoyed Edge of Darkness as it is a compulsive read. With its strong plot and emphasis on feelings rather than steamy sex Ms Rose has hit her stride again after the rather lacklustre Monster in the Closet. The plot is exciting with a high body count and the protagonists dodging death on several occasions. It may not be for everyone as it fairly graphic and there is frequent mention of past cases involving child sex abuse.

As ever with Ms Rose half of the novel is taken up with the plot but the other half revolves around a new relationship and strong arousal. I must admit that that I don't always think that she gets the balance right (I'm not too keen on too much sex) but much of Edge of Darkness revolves around Meredith being very understanding of Adam and his many problems and gradually revealing her own. Obviously it's heartwarming to see two damaged individuals forming a bond and finding true love but I wouldn't have given him house room and her continual understanding got a bit cloying - I'd have preferred if she'd let rip occasionally at his behaviour.

Edge of Darkness is a good, exciting read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

I was so happy when I seen Karen Rose’s new book on netgalley, I was double excited when I got a email saying my request to read it was accepted. I literally jumped up and down so happy and started reading right away. I’ve waited so long to read Adam and Meredith’s story and was totally worth the wait.

Edge of darkness features some of out favourite characters from previous books Dani, Deacon, Faith, the O’Bannion brothers, kate and decker and also Diesel etc. This book is focused on Meredith and Adam, Meredith Fallon is a child psychologist who we met briefly Karen Rose’s earlier novel. After a one time affair with detective Adam Kimble she has been pining after him but unsure why he is pulling away and going out of his way to avoid her,But Adam has his reasons and demons of his own to deal with. That is until it all comes to a head when Meredith becomes the victim of a terrible crime, someone tried to shoot her and nobody knows why.

Karen Rose’s books are always tense and unpredictable, you never know what’s going to happen. Her books keep you on the edge of you seat till the very end and that was the very same on this book.I thoroughly enjoyed edge of darkness it has such a strong plot with a killer at large and with the emotions and feelings between Meredith and Adam I couldn’t get enough.

The beauty of Karen Rose’s novels is that she doesn’t offer any red herrings you are literally left guessing the whole way through, she blends her books so well with the main plot and romance between the two main characters, she has the ability to mix them so well.

After more than 20 books the Author still manages to capture my attention with wonderful characters and complex plots which keeps you reading until the last word on the last page and I cant wait for her next book. Karen Rose’s book always keep me hooked I can always re-read them and never get enough of them.

Edge of Darkness gives us a man who is fighting for both his sanity and his sobriety all while trying to track a killer who is attempting to kill the woman he cares about.

Adam Kimble had been on the edge for a while. Dealing with PTSD from the things he has seen as a Homicide detective and used alcohol to kill the pain. He met Meredith Fallon at cusp of this and has been avoiding her due to AA's recommendation of no relationship for the first year of sobriety. He knows that he's hurt her badly with not telling her the real reason he has avoided her but he wants to make her proud of him by getting that one year (typical man – if he'd just explain pretty sure she'd understand).. Well all of that's blown to hell when someone tries to kill her with a bomb.

Meredith who counsels children and adolescents who have been victimized was taking one of her clients, Mallory Martin (who fans of the series will recognize from Every Dark Corner – she was the young girl that had been held for 6 years by a the head of a child trafficking and pornography ring) out to lunch to celebrate her starting education classes. It's while at this lunch that a man approaches with a gun and bomb strapped to his chest.

As this is part of the Cincinnati series those characters play a big part in this book which is always nice to revisit previous characters. The hunt for the person responsible for orchestrating the hit on Meredith ends up leading to very large trail of bodies as the killer is trying to both cover his tracks and carry out a twisted game he started years ago.

Betrayal is the word for this book.. Want to know the who and why? Read the book (insert evil laugh here)

Boy, there was so much going on in this one, so many story lines coming to a head and so many of the past characters that showed up playing a small role. It made for great reading!

I think the best thing about this book was that Adam was finally facing up to things, to himself, to his friends and most especially to Meredith. It was nice to see that no one reacted the way he thought they would, instead they supported him and sort of made him wonder what would have happened if he had asked for help right away. The last year wouldn’t have been so bleak for him. Meredith finally got an answer of why Adam wouldn’t let her go, which made her feel wanted and finally she had what all her friends seem to have found, love.

The crimes in this one were bad, made more so because of the cause one megalomaniac who thought they had the right to do what they wanted, no matter what. It didn’t help that they were smart and found ways to hide the behavior, ways that were so devious. I was glad to see they were brought down in the end.

The aftermath of this one had great reaching effects, but most everybody was in a good place, a place where they are able to go on with their lives and put the past in the past.

WOW! Karen Rose gives us another dark and chilling thriller!

The action starts right out of the gate and speeds full throttle throughout the entire 640 pages! I could not put this book down! Adam and Meredith are brilliantly crafted! Their characters are complex, flawed and genuine, as are all the characters in the Cincinnati branch of the Romantic Suspense series!

The mystery/suspense aspect of the story was on point! There were so many layers of subterfuge and intrigue that kept me glued to my Kindle screen WAY past my bedtime. And boy can Ms. Rose write a villain! It’s scary how her mind works, she’s diabolical! 😈

EDGE OF DARKNESS is a dangerous and deadly mystery that will have you white-knuckling the pages until the very end!
