The first two books in the bestselling Justice series now available as a box set.
Cruel Justice The headless body of a wealthy widow is discovered decomposing in Chelling Forest. Then a second victim is found. Detective Inspector Lorne Simpkins and her partner, DS Pete Childs are assigned the case.
Before they can discover the identity of the killer they must make a connection between the two victims.
After a third murder, Lorne receives a grisly surprise. Clearly, a vicious serial killer is on a rampage...and Lorne has become the killer's fixation.
Lorne can't allow her failing marriage or her new boss--a man with whom she shares a sensuous secret--keep her from focusing on her job. She must catch the macabre murderer, or risk becoming the next victim.
And Impeding Justice For eight long years, Detective Inspector Lorne Simpkins has tracked the vicious criminal known as The Unicorn. But the killer has frustrated MI6 at every turn and remained successful at Impeding Justice.
When Lorne is targeted in a trap that results in the death of her partner, the tragedy shakes her confidence to the core. Before she has time to recoup, her teenage daughter is kidnapped. More than Lorne's professional reputation rests on her bringing The Unicorn to justice.

I adored the first two books in this series which can be found in this double box set - the series is brilliantly written with some fantastic characters - I have reviewed the books individually too but can honestly say these are most definately two I would very highly recommend!
I enjoyed the pace of the stories of the first two books in this series. Nice range of characters although most people I liked never made it to the end of book two! Found the central goody & baddy a little bit over the top. Lorne, the female detective, was a bit too focused on her work and able to emotionally detach from her family unnervingly quickly. The Unicorn felt a bit overplayed and reminded me of a Bond villain. I will be reading more of the series.
Cruel Justice Impeding Justice 8/30/2007, He called her vile names, & then the bar caved in her skull. A saw was close by & he finished severing her neck from body. 9/30/2007, Chelling Forest. DS Pete Childs (partner) had called DI Lorne Simpkins & informed him a body had been discovered. Dr. Jacques Arnaud (40+, Pathologist) was examining the female corpse. DI Simpkins interviewed the 2 teens: Todd Altman 19, & Zoe that found the body. DI Simpkins had to lie to DCI Chalmers about the bruises she had on her face. DS Tracy Cox was added to the team to solve the gruesome murder. DS John Fox, Molly Cornell (35), DS Childs (partner), & DI Simpkins were the other team members. Belinda Greenaway (65, widow) informed everyone Sharron Fishland (widow, DFL bank cashier, Castleway) was missing. Belinda’s body was found. Doreen Nichols body was the found next. Mr. Timmins (Branch mgr.) didn’t seem very concerned. DS Childs, & DI Simpkins interviewed Doreen’s (sister). The 3rd victim Kim Charlton was found face down on the wooden floor of a shed. The owners of the property are Jim Wilkinson & Frank Gee (mate). Both were being attended to by the EST. Sandy Crayford (social worker), & Carol Lang (aka Madame Xsarina) were the next 2 victims. Will the serial killings be stopped & someone brought to justice?
Impeding Justice DI Lorne Simpkins listened to the chopper descending. Protection gunfire came from it. DS Pete Childs (partner) had been shot. DI Simpkins took cover. The Unicorn (sadistic pedophile) had escaped again. Dr. Jacques Arnaud was doing his best to comfort her. DCI Sean Roberts & DI Simpkins had to let Superintendent Greenfall The Unicorn wanted $20-million in cash. We have 24 hrs. to deposit it on the roof of Great Ormond Street Hospital. DS Fox (partner) & DI Simpkins went to visit with Sergei Abromovski (Russian businessman, Trelgo Oil, UNI 123). Charlie (13, daughter/grand) had been kidnapped. Sasha introduced herself to Charlie.
What happened to DC Laura Crane? Will Charlie be found alive? Will The Unicorn be caught & tried put away?

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow a very well written crime thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

I managed to read the first book just because when I start a book I like to finish it. How they made the woman in this book a lead inspector. She cares nothing for her husband and very little for her daughter. Everything her husband says about her is true. She is selfish, self centered and doesn't know what being a wife and mother even means. She lust after other men. A blind man could tell her partner is in love with her. Because he is heavy and not good looking she just strings him on. And then her and the French man. Someone needs to explain to her you don't have to have sex with a guy to be unfaithful. For heaven sakes she take the man to her and her husbands bed. The only time she shows any concern for her husband or child is in a life or death struggle. I couldn't even get through the second book. I did like the villians although she got totally out of character with the one in book two. All of a sudden he comes out in public after staying behind the secnes for years. The part with the van was totally ridicules. Well the whole book was. The child should thank her lucky stars she was borned before this woman became inspector or she would have murdered her before she was born llike she did the other child.

Definitely fast-paced - the second takes place in just over 48 hours and manages to cover a lot in that timespan. I found it curious that the first book didn't have a clear setting. I thought it was in a provincial town somewhere around London but from the second book it seems it must be in London itself - certainly that book is.
Cruel Justice is a straightforwardish murder procedural, the second less so - with many twists and turns after a shocking (and I mean that - unexpected and disturbing, in fact) opening. Looking through the long list of other books by this author, who has several different series, it seems that in addition to further books there is at least one prequel novella and another that fits between the two - well worth seeking out!
Couple of additional comments - the events in Impeding justice are particularly well-timed (badly?) in view of the events in London in recent weeks - and is it really possible to use mobiles for meaningful conversation in helicopters? General viewing suggests otherwise...
Book 1 was probably worth a 2 star rating but as 2 was a minus 1 I gave the collection an aggregate of 1. Book 1 was a plodding police procedural made worse by poor dialogue. The plot was let down by the far fetched ending. Book 2 was simply awful. A ludicrous plot with a villain straight out of a comic book complete with a name that is worthy of a Batman character. The violence was gratuitous and the descriptive rape of underage children sickening. My first and last foray into the world of Lorne Simpkin.
not sure if I will continue in the series. I think the author has maybe gone overboard in trying to create the most horrific enemy. the enemy, the Unicorn, is completely evil, and you have no idea why.
Also, Lorne, the main character, isn't very likeable. She is married to her job and completely ignores her husband and teenage daughter and gets offended and angry when they actually want her to be with them sometimes.
Book 2 starts with a murder, and the numbers just keep racking up. In some ways, the plot was quite predictable: enemy stays one step ahead of the police.
I have to say I'm in a bit of shock after these two books especially the second one wow talk about spine tingling without being overly graphic mind you your imagination fills in the blanks anyway...Lol
Lorne still amazes me especially after book 2 how the hell she was still functioning by the end just shows what a strong woman she is and her daughter is so much like her .
What great read . The stories had so many twist and turns to keep the reader wondering what was going to happen next. The pace of the book never slowed, keeping the reader so engrossed ,Wanting to find out what was going to happen next . A series well worth the time spent reading it as once started it was hard too put it down until the last word was read .
Fast explosive things that you wouldn't think happen but do. What a page turner it makes you cry and you don't expect what happened to happen. Very touching and romantic at times but can be difficult at other times to read.
What could be better than becomes no totally immersed in the hunt for a serial killer? Having DI Lorne Simpkins as the Star? Reliving the partnership with Pete? Yes, both those, plus it's a free download to introduce you to this series. Get it. Read it. Love it.
This book was wow and exciting and extremely action packed and with drama and it kept you wanting to read and not put the book down When you thought you were closing in on the Unicorn he would surprise you and get away.
Fast paced read..shows the terror the girls must have felt during their capture and torture. Also author helped show that male dominance in the workplace is still going on!
Both stories were fast paced and Gipping. Some of the details were a bit too graffic for me. Brilliant but lost stars due to the ending which wasn't really an ending but more of a cliff hanger.
The story concerned a sick, depraved criminal mastermind, ex-SAS Bob Baldwin. This is far from an easy read, I'm not surprised it has a wide variation in views expressed online. I have rated it as OK, but only because there are no zero ratings.
Found it fast paced but very graphic and maybe some of the violence was a bit unnecessary. got rather fed up with the obsessive workaholic detective and her dysfunctional husband. Will not stop me from reading the next book in the series.
I enjoyed reading the first two in this series. However, I was a little disappointed in the ending. I felt that it was moving on to more of the same thing. Obviously, I wont know that unless I read the next book! Perhaps my curiosity will get the better of me and I will carry on. We shall see.
Captivated in the first chapter! If you love strong female characters then these books are for you! Great stories and action packed! Will keep you up reading until you lose track of time!!
Well written fast paced murder mystery. Central characters are well built up, flaws and all and endear themselves to yo u in both a good and bad way. Just a pity they change so quickly and you start all over again
Be sure to read these in order. 1 &2 cast builds in order!!.. I enjoy trying to figure out who run it! In the last 10% of book2, I finally picked up the clue of the solution, but its my secret! You have. To read it!😇😆☺😊😀
Wow wow wow .....I can t get enough of this amazing series by Mel Comley.... Totally outstanding with amazing assists and turns I love the characters and I know for a fact this series and author are very special that ill always read what she writes......
Lorne and her partner were called to a murder site where the victim was found headless and no one could find a reason or motive which made it difficult to figure until the next victim and the next have a connection.
First book was better, more believable in both plot and character. Second book was unbelievable in both respects, and didn't seem to follow on from from the first.
