Dozens of cousins and their families, from all corners of New York City, converge on Grandma's house for a fun-filled family reunion, captured in rich, robust illustrations.
You wouldn't really know this book is historical fiction if it weren't for the illustrations. The text is brief- each cousin lives in a different borough of New York and travels a different way to get to their grandmother's house. It is really the illustrations that contain all of the talking points: the style of dress, the mode of transportation, the number of children, etc. I think if the teacher were able to project the images so that kids could see and make comparisons easily, it would be a much more valuable experience as a read aloud.
I live in NYC and I'm a fan of books set here. So this charming picture book that features families from each of the five boroughs each traveling to the Grandma's house (In Manhattan, I'm guessing) is a real treat. It's neat that the book touches Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, The Bronx and Manhattan and features a different mode of travel in each circumstance. This turn of the century (1900)story gradually fills up Grandmas house with a huge passel of children and grand children. And on the very last page we have everyone posed for a picture together. Charming and worth a few chuckles at times. Readers may have issues with the fact that this tour of NY families does not really capture the multicultural aspect of the city, but for what it is, I really do love this book.
This was my sister's and my FAVORITE book as children. We used to check it out at the Orem Public Library. We actually had forgotten the title of it and could not find it. When we are a little older, we once went back to the library and fruitlessly searched the shelves for it (we must have had a lot of faith to think we could find it that way!). For my birthday a few years ago my sister gave me a book--this book!! She had found it somehow. It was a priceless gift. Still one of my favorites and I am so excited to share it with my children. The illustrations and different family pictures are just adorable.
My all time favorite children's book. THe illustrations are beautiful and captivating. The whole book captures the essence of a large family at the turn of the century. My older children got this book as a gift as young children when it came out (1987) and I found it in paperback for my youngest children.
