A hundred years ago evil scientists spliced human genes with those of animals, creating a genetic mutation passed on through the generations. Hated because of their differences, these Ge-Mis live on the fringes of society where they scrounge and scrape to get by.
Nevada is half Ge-Mi, and hides that fact behind baggy clothes and by keeping distance between himself and everyone around him. One day his peaceful life is shattered by an explosion and the arrival of a pack of wolves to sniff out the culprit. Wolves have excellent noses and as Alpha, Taylor can sniff out every one of Nevada's secrets—and the harder Nevada tries to resist, the more difficult staying away from Taylor becomes.

Wow--what a nice surprise! I've been burned so many times with shifter stories--far too many of them are formulaic and lazily written. But I'm also obsessed with the genre so I keep breaking down and buying new books with juicy blurbs, only to end up yelling obscenities at my kindle when the inevitable disappointment comes.
(Vaguely spoilerish) Not so here: Ge-Mi was lovely. It's such an odd story, so it's a little hard to describe why it worked for me. Except for the blurb, which warns of the usual military experiments by the dreaded "evil scientists," you might assume the author had never read another shifter story--which is a good thing. The world-building was quirky and surprisingly rich, imagining a futuristic world where feudalism has returned. But just as you think you're going to get a heavy-handed picture of corrupt lords tormenting a shifter underclass, the story veers in a different direction and you're getting an odd little tale about a waiter who rescues stray cats, hiding that he's part cat himself.
The shifter stuff was downright adorable: these aren't shifters per se, but humans whose genes were spliced with animals, and the author did such a wonderful job capturing Nevada's cat-like qualities--hating water, loving fish, needing to groom, along with his conversations with his six pet cats. (Dollars to donuts Mell Eight is a cat person). And of course, he hates dogs, because they're "mean," including a certain part-wolf guy, who keeps following him home. The main romantic relationship could easily double as a YA, but for once that was fine, because the development was so sweet. I am not usually a fan of sweet--at all--but it worked here because both heroes were touchingly naive.
Bottom line: I really liked this and I would definitely recommend it to fans of quirky stories.
This is an entertaining novella. It's set in the future. After some experimentation with animals, now there is a new species, the Ge-mi, who are a mix of human and animals and have characteristics of both. The concept was somehow original to me, since I don't usually read books about shifters. The plot was nice and well developed for the length of the story. I liked Nevada a lot and I liked how sweet Taylor could be with him. That said, I felt that Taylor's character needed a little more development and description. Since the story is from Nevada's pov, there is much we don't know about him. The weak points, in my opinion, were the insta-love thing between the MC and the lack of sex. There is not a single smexy time for these two. Oh well...
This book is, in a word, adorable. Nevada and Taylor might not be a purfect couple, but they come close! When interacting with one another, the canine and feline inspirations are evident. Nevada prefers to watch from a height while Taylor wants an immediate confrontation. Nevada is more reserved, more cautious, and the few times he’s forced to fight, he does so in a very feline manner.
At first glance — and at first read — this book may seem light and shallow, but the world building involved is actually quite subtle. Nevada is half snow leopard on his father’s side, which gives him some rather inhuman abilities. Snow leopards have an amazing jumping skill, and so does Nevada. And, like cats, he spends a good portion of his free time worried about and taking care of grooming. Taylor, as a wolf Ge-Mi, may have speed and strength and finer senses, but he can’t quite make the same jumps Nevada can, even with a running start. Because wolves can’t make the same jumps a cat could. And while Nevada may have a feline’s taste for fish, it doesn’t mean he can’t and won’t eat normal foods.
While other Ge-Mi were introduced, they were in brief scenes where their talents and animal behaviors weren’t able to be showcased. But as this is the first book in a series, I’m confident we’ll see more owls, hyenas, and who knows what else! It’s refreshing to see the research and thought that has gone into creating the Ge-Mi, to making them their own creatures and not simply watered down werewolves or superhuman half-breeds.
Okay, so this is truly where the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” comes in handy. I for one, thought looking at the cover: “WTF?!?” However, if the author/publisher was going for eye-catching, then they did do their job. Because I did notice it and I actually stopped and read the blurb, which peaked my interest. So, the moral of this story is to give this book a chance. Oh, and don’t judge the book by the artwork on its cover.
So, now I can say this is a good and interesting start to a new series. The world and character building is good, and I am hoping that the author expands upon it further in the next book. For instance, how the author takes time to add the behavior and traits of a the particular animal to the Ge-Mi. How Nevada cannot stand water, how he purrs, eats and how his sleeping quarters is situated.
In addition, I really do enjoy the back-and-forth between Nevada and Taylor; however, if you are looking for a hot and steamy read, this is not it folks. There isn’t even any “behind the scenes” action. In the end, Nevada and Taylor are just thinking about where things can take them giving us a HFN.
I for one cannot wait to see what happens next for the two MC’s given that there is still someone who has it out for Taylor’s uncle, Lord Reyes. Not to mention Nevada’s promotion, due to Rosto turning Restaurant Spice into a franchise. So, as you can see there is more to the story than the romance aspect. There is only one complaint I have, and that is the epilogue feels a bit rushed. IMO, it should have been just another chapter with better flow/transition.
So far, this is cute. The world is fun and different. I love that they're part animal all the time. I'm off to part2 . I can't wait for them to finally smooch! The way Taylor calls Nevada kitty 🤭
I may be a bit biased but I love cats so this book was just perfect to me. I love the cat details given to Nevada and his interactions with all his cats. His interactions with Taylor were cute and the book just wasn't long enough for all the fluff I wanted. There were some serious business going on in the background regarding the views people had on Ge-Mi but I'm glad it didn't stifle the atmosphere of the book into a very serious, heavy book but rather, was surprisingly light.
And of course, my favourite kitty had to be Hex. Just too adorable with a bigger than life character.
Overall, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
If I'd realized this wasn't complete (part one) I probably would have continued to put this off. Long waits in between books just makes you forget what you've already read the majority of the time for me. This was cute but in the end it is leaving a lot of unfinished business. Makes me wonder if it really will be concluded or not, especially since I'm reading this 2 years after the fact and the next part still isn't out..
In the end that makes me disappointed cus I wanted to see where Taylor and Nevada went and how they get there..

At first, I wasn't sure what to make of the story. I found Nevada interesting, but the Prologue was a little confusing, introducing all of these strange terms and ideas that weren't fully explained. Then it skipped to Chapter 1 and took four pages to tell us what time difference sat between the two chapters, which really didn't help with orientating my mind in the story. However, once I reached Chapter 2 everything fell into place.
The world building was nicely done (apart from the brief blip between the prologue/chapter 1) giving us enough detail about the world and how it functioned that I didn't feel confused or have too many questions about it. Mostly, the world was similar to our own, with some Minority Report tech added for the fantasy element (laser guns, hover cars etc) and the obvious addition of some Puss in Boots kind of creature/human hybrids. Yet, it still managed to be original and a great take on the ideas of both.
Nevada is half-snow leopard – part of the half human/animal species of Ge-Mi – and I liked that the story briefly explored his home life in the Prologue, telling us how and why he came to this new place and letting us see him giving his 'bribe' to the Lord in Kensey, Lord Reyes. It gave us an idea of how the world worked, while showing us just enough of Nevada's personality to make me care about him.
When Taylor was introduced to the story, I just knew things were going to get far more interesting, because he was such a gruff, roguish character with a softer side that only Nevada brought out.
Overall, it was a great fantasy story with great characters. The writing style was perfect, for me, giving me just what I wanted and leaving enough clues to the 'mystery' aspect that I could follow along. I liked all the characters, who were evenly explored as background characters, and loved the chemistry between Nevada and Taylor. I'd happily go buy part two right now, if it was available, but I'll be eagerly awaiting the release so that I can find out what happens next.
Ge-Mi (Part One) (Nine Star Press,978-1-951880-72-9, 2020) is a sweet futuristic romance written by Mell Eight. Nevada is a beautiful snow leopard who has been hiding his whole life. No one has ever seen him and then one day his enemy does and it proceeds like nothing he dreamed about.
I always laugh when I see the romances listed as “clean and sweet” because they are usually heterosexual with a religious overtone. As if no other genre can have a sweet and non-sexual romance. Ge-Mi proves my point as it is well-written, engaging, nail-biting at times, and the main characters do not even kiss. Yet I was fully engaged and I cannot wait until the next book.
Eight gives readers plenty to coo about and to flinch in reaction to in Ge-Mi. This is a well-rounded science-fiction romance book. It has action, mystery, genetic engineering, and fluffy cats (laugh). Part Two cannot come soon enough!
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
Okay, wow I loved this but it definitely needed more steam. Hopefully that will come in next installment. Original dystopian tale where genetically modified humans are shunned by society. Nevada is wonderful, recuing all those kitties and just trying to survive on his own. Taylor was prickly at first but it was sweet how he felt drawn to Nevada.
With this book author Mell Eight has created a promising reality.
The plight of the Ge-Mi people adds a fun translation to the civil rights issues of various subsets of humanity... And does so without the ham fisted allegories used by lesser authors
A really wonderful little story. I enjoyed the interactions between the MCs and the storyline has me really wishing that it had been longer. I cannot wait to read more of the truly fascinating literary world.
*I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by NetGalley*
This was an interesting and enjoyable sci-fi world. I've found it can be surprisingly difficult to achieve a balance with realism when dealing with sci-fi universes, but I think this one did admirably well. There's a bit of a fairy tale quality to it which I enjoyed immensely and probably helps it achieve that balance. The characters are fun, though the romance was a bit fast it was enjoyable.
I’ve got to say, I really enjoyed how different this was in regards to shifter books. I really love Taylor and Nevada together, I can’t wait for part 2!
I really enjoyed this book and the whole new world that it opened up. The concept was interesting and the characters were engaging, keeping me eager to read what would happen next.
Nevada is a snow leopard Ge-Mi, a half human from experiments over a century past. Despite the time there are many prejudices against his kind and he lives in secret, quietly working at a cafe while pretending to be fully human. This quiet existence is shattered when a pack of hyena ge-mis bomb a nearby business, and the local wolf pack starts looking into it. Nevada accidentally attracts the attention of the pack alpha, and grandson of the Lord of the city, Taylor Reyes. Now he has to contend with a wolf breathing down his neck, bringing up new feelings and risking his hidden existence.
The insta-love concept was thrown around for this but it really doesn't match. The best I could liken this to is a bit of a scenario. Say you met a celebrity at your work and started dating in secret as you weren't sure where this could go. While out, a paparazzi catches a picture of you two kissing. Suddenly your relationship is thrust into the spotlight and you have to choose whether to completely abandon it, or stay and give it a serious go in the public eye. Nevada and Taylor meet at his job and start their relationship rather antagonisticly, a cat and a dog staking out territory. When their budding relationship gets thrust into the public eye Nevada has to decide whether he is going to run and hide, finding a new city and starting over, or to give what he feels a real chance. Choosing to stay by no means make it insta-love, it just makes it a possibility for something to happen. He even acknowledges his own uncertainty about it.
Was he willing to stand at Taylor's side as a Ge-Mi, but also as Taylor's mate? The answer to the first part was yes. Nevada already knew he'd throw everything he had into helping the Reyes family stay in power, which would in turn help every Ge-Mi in the city. Nevada didn't have an answer to the second part of the question yet.
This is the first romantic relationship Nevada has ever had, and he gives it serious consideration. He also admits to his complete lack of experience, but is willing to take Taylor's lead. As such the relationship is very pg-13 in this first part, but it makes sense and allows the relationship to build rather than just basing it on sexual tension.
I loved the political background to this whole book. The ge-mis allow the idea of being persecuted as a race to really be looked at. Most were just altered people, willing to live peacefully and build a life. Some however saw that their abilities let them get away with more crimes, and chose to take an easy path. Though this was a minority, humanity painted the whole race with the same brush and denied them rights. This caused more to turn to crime to make a living, causing a vicious circle. Having the courage to live without hiding is a big factor of this book, as well as creating a city where that is possible. It made the book about so much more and I would love to see where that will end up going.
This is fairly short, but is promised to just be part one and will be continued. I am very interested in this world and these characters and will be keeping a close eye out for part two!
It’s hard for me to describe my feelings for this book. When I first started it, I expected a traditional little shifter story, a nice easy read. While this was an easy read, it wasn’t any kind of traditional shifter story. For one, it’s about a world where Ge-Mi – genetically mutated – people are pretty much abhorred. If you are one, you’re not treated as an equal so your options are either trying to hide what you are or living with people thinking you’re lower than dirt. For Nevada, he’s managed to hide his cat side until an explosion rocks the place he works at and his secret is threatened by a pack of wolves determined to sniff out who set the bomb. Unfortunately, cats and dogs don’t mix and when Taylor sets his nose on Nevada, Nevada’s life is about to go from bad to worse.
Oh my god! When I started this story, I didn’t really expect much to the story. Sure, I read the blurb but once I started, I got so sucked into the story, I couldn’t put it down. I loved Nevada as a character and I loved that he was so sassy. I also loved Taylor as a character. It was interesting to see the differences between them and the connection they couldn’t help but developing. It was such fun to see inconspicuous Nevada try to stay away from Taylor while Taylor couldn’t help sticking his nose where it didn’t belong. I couldn’t help loving the bickering and bantering between Taylor and Nevada and the slow progress they took on getting to know each other. By the end, I was all ‘awwwww they’re so cute together!’ which made me have such a sappy smile, I almost couldn’t take it.
I absolutely adored this story and these characters but I wished Taylor had been more fleshed out. I would have loved to see part of this story from his POV so we could have really gotten a different side than what Nevada saw and heard especially since Taylor is so vastly different.
All in all, this was an amazing story. I loved that this author put a spin on shifters while mixing a bit of scifi into it. I loved that Nevada was so reluctant to get involved in certain areas but couldn’t really help himself and I also adored the connection between Nevada and Taylor. I can’t wait to see what happens next because I just couldn’t get enough of these two!!
The author has crafted an interesting world for this series. I kept imagining being there, walking down the street and bumping into Ge-Mi, people with both human and animal traits. Possibly kids with colored, feathered heads, women with scales or men spouting otter ears. Pretty cool, right?
This world is presented through Donovan's eyes, the cutest young man with snow leopard features. He'd thought he was safe, living a quite life, until it was all literally blown away by hyena Ge-Mis. His careful cover was thrown off and he also got under Taylor's radar, the head of local wolf Ge-Mis pack. I liked how the dangerous situation helped them become unlikely allies and maybe more. They were adorable together, despite the fact that their animal halves were completely opposite. There wasn't a romance between them, per se, just a hint of one, but I hope for more next in the series.
This story was nice flowing and a delight to read. And I think 𝗚𝗲-𝗠𝗶 would be the perfect read for cat lovers. I don't think I'd be wrong in estimating that half of it, if not more, was in someway cat related. Nevada's feline mannerisms and his grooming rituals aside, a bit chunk of the story was dedicated to his escapades savings cats and his living situation with them. Two of cats, particularly, have stolen my heart. In all honesty, I would love nothing more than a book with more of Beth, the queen of Nevada's home, and Hex, the cutest and fiercest kitty alive. Fingers crossed I'll get that in the upcoming installment of the series. Can't wait.

One thing I will say for Mell Eight's books is that there is always such evocative world building within these pages. Another thing I will say is that they are short and sweet. I almost wish that this one had included part two as part of the same novel. Though, from what I saw of the teaser, the next part seems to be from Taylor's point of view; whereas part one was from Nevada.
Nevada is a snow leopard Ge-Mi. Ge-Mis in this world are genetically engineered humans spliced with some sort of animal DNA. For example, Taylor and his pack are wolf Ge-Mi. Clearly, this book is set in the future, in a similar kind of world to the one we live in, but after a war that took out all the major cities and so smaller provinces are now looked after by lords in a pre-Industrial way.
This book may have been a four star read, but I don't think I've ever read a book where the cat shape shifter was the main character, and so I had to give it an extra star just for originality and my love of cats. Especially the domestic cat pack that Nevada cedes his home to. It's so wonderful and such a big part of who he is depicted as.
He is also waitstaff in an incredibly successful cafe, good friends with the owner and, for most of the story, quite concerned about the idea that it will come out that he's a Ge-Mi. Most provinces are pretty hostile to them and he knows he runs the risk of being run both out of the job he loves and the province he lives in should that secret come out.
Which makes it all the more important to avoid notice of Taylor and his nose that keeps smelling cat every time he's around Nevada. It's a cute and simple premise, and incredibly easy reading.
I really enjoyed the start of this new series from Mell Eight, mostly because Nevada is adorable. The futuristic, dystopian world with its independent towns and cities and the friction between humans and Ge-Mis was nicely done, providing plenty of scope for more from this series, but it was Nevada who made this book for me.
Part human, part snow leopard, Nevada is quiet and shy and used to hiding. He’s also king of cats, finding them everywhere he goes, nursing those that need it back to health, raising orphaned kittens and securing new homes for them when they’re ready to leave. He’s sweet natured and kind, but also brave when it counts. I loved him.
However, the romance between him and Taylor didn’t quite work for me. Mostly because Taylor needs a lot more fleshing out as a character, but also because it came out of nowhere and didn’t really go anywhere, yet people are already mentioning mate-type things. These two don’t even kiss, yet it’s love and permanent and… hm.
So the romance needs work, and I would like to know a lot more about Taylor and his wolves, but as an opening I really enjoyed this and would happily read more about Nevada. Especially if he comes with Hex in his pocket, because that kitten is the cutest, feisty fur ball and I hope we see a lot more of him in future.
Still a 4 star read for me. Hex is by far my favorite part of the story.
Rating: 4 stars
This was a really cute story. I just loved Nevada and his many cats. I thought both Nevada and Taylor made a very cute couple. The romance in this story is definitely a slow burn and if you go into this book expecting it to be highly erotic you'll be disappointed. I actually liked that the two MCs didn't jump in the sack the minute they met. It was refreshing. Also, as the title implies this story ends with a big To Be Continued. That didn't bother me either, as I was expecting it. All in all, it was a good story that I highly recommend.
I received this book from Net Galley and as usual if Mell has written it then I want to read it! This book follows Nevada a snow leopard Ge-Mi who has moved to a new city after his mother passes away. He's been taught to keep himself hidden due to peoples fear of his genetic mutation. He's sweet, diligent and hard working and somehow manages to attract the attention of Taylor a wolf Ge-Mi grandson of the local Lord who controls the area. This is a great start to a series and I'm looking forward to more stories from Nevada and Taylor.
I will definitely look for a second part. It's a story about a dystopian society where people with split genes and animal characteristics are considered second-class citizens. Nevada is one of them and finding honest job for himself is not so easy. Hiding the fact that he has cat ears and a tail even more so. He's trying to live a peacefull life however the ancestry lands him in one trouble after the other.
It was light story with open ending, a really nice surprise.
It was a cute, short read, and I was glad to see the (Part One) addition to the title, because it definitely feels like the first part of the story, and not a complete narrative. I liked it, but the fact that it felt like a prologue made me feel it lacked a proper conclusion? Even knowing that there is going to be a sequel, there is something missing to make me love it.
