Drugged and kidnapped by Vampires, presumed dead by his clan, powerful VampLycan Veso must rely on a creature he dislikes almost as much as the suckheads who nabbed him if he hopes to escape- a human. But when Glenda proves more resourceful than most of her kind, he agrees to see her safely through the Alaskan wilderness. He'll have to fight an overwhelming attraction to the inquisitive beauty every excruciating step of the way. Glen doesn't know which is worse: learning she's the distant relative of a Vampire who fancies himself a king (um...what?!), or the fact that said relative is trying to force her to birth his queen by mating her with a half Vampire, half Lycan. Veso is scary, has claws, but he's also key to her survival. She just wishes that she didn't notice all his muscles or the way her body responds to his. He has promised to keep her alive but she might lose her heart in the bargain.
I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.
No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.
I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.
The story started in the previous book “Lorn”, when Veso was kidnapped by vampires. In this book we learn why he was kidnapped. Veso is drugged and forced to breed with a human.
The human is Glenda who has been also taken unwillingly from her home by a ruthless master vampire. Apparently she is the last of his line who is female of breeding age and carries a family resemblance. The master wants to marry her offspring because “Royal bloodlines should marry.”
There is adventure, romance, outdoor running and hiding through the Alaskan wilderness. There are VampLycans, vampires, a nuts master vampire, a few GarLycans, some humans used for snacks and some humans used for mind-slaves.
A pure entertaining book like the ones only Laurann Dohner can deliver. No deep thinking, no worries. Lots of fun.
It was what I needed right now, a cute shifter story with a pretty good plot and interesting characters. I really liked the heroine, she was bad-ass and fun and exactly what I want in a PNR.
The hero was pretty good as well, I'd even say he was lovable. Didn't really make me "feel" too many stuff (why the 3.5 rating) but it was definitely worth the read.
The plot was interesting but the ending was a bit rushed, I wanted to see a bit more bloodshed and guts and stuff, so it was a bit of a disappointment there, but as far as the romance part goes, it was pretty great.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: ❤️💙💜💚 Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔 World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎🌍 Character development: 😠☺️😋😍 Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Solo Narration
The heroine:Glenda - she had been kidnapped from her home and was held in a dungeon by vampires that fed on the people in the next cell. They told her that she wasn’t cattle like the others, that is why they fed her and let her shower once a week. A vampire named Vlad told her the master has a purpose for her.
The Hero:Veso - he is a VampLycan and part of the clan that was led by Decker Fillmore. Though he hated Fillmore and wanted Lorn or Lavos to take leadership of the clan, he was planning to help with that. Before that could happen, Vampires attacked him and took him hostage while he was out on patrol.
The Story: Glen finds out that the master is a king and he says he needs a queen. He tells her that he is distantly related to her as she was from his sister’s line. He wants her to get pregnant with his queen. He wants to design his own queen by making a relative with a family resemblance breed with a VampLycan. He plans to keep her in a room with the beast until she has a girl baby. If she has a boy, he will put the boy to work for him since he will be a relation.
I liked this story, since Glen was a human that had no idea about the supernatural before this happened to her. Also they had a good journey after they escaped captivity. Glenda was a strong female character and wasn’t prone to crying or whining when faced with terrible circumstances and fearsome paranormal creatures. It was also nice and steamy and the fact that Veso hated humans but couldn’t help his attraction to Glen made it that much hotter.
This book is told in multiple points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Savannah Richards. I have really been enjoying her narration and haven’t yet gotten bored with her narration or the storylines, I have binged these first four books in four days.
Obviusly, there're smexy times, but they are few and interspaced with a lot of interesting action. The MCs are running from deranged Vampire Master.
This reads more like an adventure: crossing rivers, hiding in holes during the night, scaling mountaines, etc.
It's fun to read how a simply human heroine, Glen (Glenda, but she hates her name because of the good witch! LOL) manages to survive and help a strong superhuman vamp-lycan, Veso! LOL
Veso is a misogynist (because of issues with his mother) and, if that's not enough, he also don't like humans thinking them weak and stupid.
But Glen is just the girl to teach him a lesson he wouldn't forget! ;)
I loved Glen to pieces! She was just the heroine I like! She's smart, she's strong, she's brave when needed and ready to follow orders when not! I loved her!
I liked Veso too, even if I wanted to slap him sometimes! He was man (or vamp-lycan) enough to admit his wrongs and to appreciate Glen.
A really nice story! I'm looking forward to Lore's book!
I miss the Laurann Dohner from the New Species series. I don't know what is happening lately with her books, they are not what they used to be. I am disappointed and saddened by it.
Veso kicks off where Lorn finished and even though it's been a little while I wasn’t confused at all.
I love the humor and lightheartedness of this book. Veso sure doesn’t make it easy on Glenda. But it’s the banter that really had me hooked.
Both were kidnapped for the master vampires gain. He wants a queen and since Glenda was a part of his bloodline he thought she could make him the perfect queen.
Yeah, Vamps in this book are nutty as a box of rocks just saying.
Veso is a VampLyca and even though the master thinks his race is inferior he didn’t want a weak queen. Told you not all there.
Anywho this book really does have it all from humor, action, and love. Who doesn’t love a good love story? :)
I loved the narration then again I am a huge fan of Savannah Richards.
*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*
4 1/2 stars, Like the rest of this series I read this book as fast and as much as I could. The second I started reading it I was hooked. Some of this I know is because I really enjoy this series but I also know that some is because I just love Laurann Dohner's writing, her style of writing always draws me in and I never want to skim of skip the book and I am always sad when they end and then try to find info. about the next book(weather it be this series or any other). I have been reading LD for so long and she is one of my all time favorite authors. I re-read her books often so it's very comforting to know I can still count on her and her books.
We knew after book three what happened with Veso but in his book we get the whole picture. Waking up Glen(Glenda) was taken by vampires(which are real) and held captive. After a long wait Glen finally met the master and found out what his plan for her was. Taken into a room with a lycanvamp Glen is told that she can live if she goes along with the master vampires plan. Veso is furious he was captured and even more so when a human is put in his room and why. He doesn't trust humans and her by him is just another reason why.
When Glen makes a plan to free them Veso is sure she will fail but agrees to help her to safety if she does. Getting free Veso and Glen try to find their way to safety but the more time they spend together the more they feel an attraction they can't and may not want to deny. But even if they decide to go there with each other Glen is human an Veso is a part of a tribe that hates humans.
I couldn't get enough of this book, I loved Veso, another jerk who completely turns it around (which is something I always love). Glen was funny and strong and they fit together perfectly. I also loved that their relationship built and we got to see that. The book didn't feel like it took too long to see the relationship at all but we got to see them actually fall in love and overcome a lot of obstacles. I can't wait for book five and the more books I read in this series the more books I hope we get. Every book has a whole new(and old) list of interesting characters who need their own books.
A day late was definitely worth the wait and I am happy that in a little over a week LD will be releasing Lavos Book #5. Veso was surprisingly even more action-packed than the previous books in the series and kept me engaged trying to anticipate what would happen next and how they would get out of certain dilemmas. I have to say that Lorn is still my favorite, but Veso is definitely second. When the audiobook is released I will buy that as well and listen to it for the second time. There is less than a handful of my favorite author's works that I re-read every year and LD new species series is one those series.
While I am disappointed that my pre-ordered purchase for Veso is not available, it makes no sense to give one of my favorite authors a 1 star for all of her hard work. There are no absolutes. There are times when things happen that was not expected. This book is for adults not kids, but the reviews and ratings make me envision a group of kids having a temper tantrum. Grow up and be grateful that the book will be available at some point soon. I will be checking constantly and as soon as it is available I will read it in one sitting and sacrifice sleep if required.

I finally got to find out what happened to Veso when he got taken by the vampires. The crazy vampire king wants him to breed with a "mostly" human girl to hopefully sire a new queen. Thankfully, Glenda "Glen" is able to free Veso and they escape. The action/adventure is this story was fast-paced and quite enjoyable. Veso's complaining about Glen being human got old pretty quick though and I wanted more chemistry between them.
I can't wait to get a book on the GarLycan's. They seem really cool with their flying and "shelling" abilities. On to the next...
Most definitely my fave of the series so far! Now pretty puhleeeeeze can the upcoming books be more like this? (psssst...Mrs Dohner...yes im begging you) Oh I don't mean identical cause that would bore me to an early grave but...you know keep the guys from being testosterone crazed dicks. I think Kraven and Lorn had a teeny bit of that of that prob. This one felt more like a bit of a NS series book, and I'm not complaining one bit.
I remembered my first book, i have to admit it wasn't the best and I was bored then it came the 2nd better but in parallel with the 1st. Now we are at 4, it just again better. And humor, suspense were there. i really enjoyed that misadventure and aome crazyness.
Laurann Dohner’s VLG Book 4: Veso delivers an enthralling blend of paranormal romance and survival thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. With a story that weaves together the dangerous allure of the Alaskan wilderness, the pulse-pounding tension between enemies-turned-allies, and a dash of sizzling chemistry, this novel is a must-read for fans of the genre.
At the heart of the story is Veso, a formidable VampLycan, who finds himself captured by vampires and presumed dead by his clan. Drugged and held against his will, his chances of escape seem bleak until he crosses paths with Glenda—a human, a type of creature he has little respect for. Yet, Glenda quickly proves herself to be more than just an ordinary human. Resourceful, determined, and quick-witted, she becomes Veso’s unlikely partner in their perilous journey through the unforgiving Alaskan terrain.
Glenda’s plight is no less harrowing. Finding out she is the distant relative of a vampire king who plans to use her as a pawn in his quest for power leaves her reeling. Her only hope for survival lies with Veso, whose formidable strength and sharp instincts make him both a protector and a potential danger. Their dynamic is electric—Veso is a warrior with a cold exterior, while Glenda is an inquisitive and spirited woman who challenges his every expectation.
Dohner masterfully crafts the tension between Veso and Glenda, making their relationship feel organic despite the supernatural stakes. As they navigate treacherous terrain and battle their inner desires, the push-and-pull between them transforms into a deeper connection. Veso’s struggle to maintain control over his attraction to Glenda is as compelling as his determination to keep her safe, while Glenda’s gradual realization of her feelings for Veso adds a layer of emotional depth to the story. Their chemistry is palpable, with moments that sizzle and spark against the backdrop of danger.
The Alaskan wilderness is not just a setting but a character in itself, adding an atmospheric chill to the story. Dohner’s vivid descriptions bring the harsh, beautiful landscape to life, and the challenges of surviving in the wild only heighten the stakes. The isolation and relentless environment amplify the tension between Veso and Glenda, making every encounter, whether with enemy vampires or their own conflicted feelings, more intense.
While VLG Book 4: Veso is action-packed and driven by its high-stakes plot, Dohner does not shy away from exploring deeper themes of trust, loyalty, and the power of unlikely alliances. Veso’s journey from viewing Glenda as a mere human to recognizing her strength and worth mirrors the broader theme of breaking down prejudices. The story also delves into the complexities of identity and belonging, particularly as Glenda grapples with her newfound connection to the supernatural world.
Dohner’s writing is engaging, and her ability to balance steamy romance with thrilling adventure makes this book a page-turner. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing. Her characters are well-developed, with Veso’s stoic strength and Glenda’s resilience shining through, making them easy to root for even as they struggle against external threats and their own budding feelings for each other.
In conclusion, VLG Book 4: Veso is a captivating addition to Laurann Dohner’s series, blending action, romance, and paranormal elements into a story that is as heartfelt as it is thrilling. Fans of the VampLycan universe and new readers alike will find themselves drawn into the dangerous, seductive world Dohner has created. Veso and Glenda’s journey through the wilderness is one of survival, self-discovery, and a love that defies the odds, making it a must-read for anyone craving a story where passion and danger collide.
Veso’s story was my favorite so far of this series. It was a 10 star read! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 On to Lavos....
With each book I love this series more. I love grumpy hero and Veso was one. It was fun and adventurous. I couldn't stop myself until finished. And I need next book. That snippet of Lavo at the end... Yeah, I need Lavo ASAP.
I always like when the characters rub each other up the wrong way ;) It sometimes is so funny to read their banter. Like this one... if you leave all the gross part out, it's really a fun read.
AND in just a couple of weeks LAVOS comes out :D The first chapter is promising...
The characters were more powerfully opinionated and I dare say, it was really a pleasure to turn each page and discover what this cool community is facing.. can't wait to read more!
Veso had a lot of suspenseful moments, but sorry in the beginning Veso was a straight up Jerk I felt for Glen but she held her own self perfectly and thankfully Veso wasn't such a jerk in the end. Looking forward into what will happen next in the VLG series
I'm really loving this series. I want to read about the Garlycans too, especially Aveoth's story ♥ I'm loving him already... Veso, you grumpy boy, fucking loved you too ♥ 4 stars...
Savannah Richards is the reader again, and I loved her performance. Veso the 'not as bad ass as I hoped', and Glen/Glenda the 'human'... that being kinda like a 4 letter word in Veso's pack/clan. I remember Veso from the last book and I expected him to be grumpy and snobby and emotionless. And he was, but only for the first 25% or so. Glenda was a good character and suited him. The story picks up after Veso (who wasn't killed but kidnapped by Vampires) is tied to a gurney for Glenda. Turns out her distant ancestor (a Vampire who calls himself King Charles) wants her to make babies with Veso. He wants a daughter so he can make her his Queen... needless to say 'King' Charles is an incestuous nutter. Glenda helps Veso escape and a the majority of the book is them trying to get back to his territory. The journey brings them closer and at a certain point Veso just drops his difficulties with her being human and decides he wants her as his mate. I found it a bit abrupt, how he changed his mind. So overall I enjoyed the read/listen but wasn't wowed by it. Very safe read unlike the last one.
