Shadow Valley Manor #2

World Tree Girl

Rate this book
The girl with the full-body tattoo of a world tree is not just another runaway. She's dead, for starters, and her veins are emptied of blood and oozing a strange, jelly-like substance. To Maureen Keslyn, seasoned paranormal investigator, former FBI agent, new owner of the Shadow Valley Manor Retirement Home, this isn’t just a corpse. It’s a sign that the Medusa, a dangerous paranormal hybrid, is on another killing spree.

Maureen and her team—Jake, the local sheriff, Matt, the Shadow Valley Manor cook with knife skills that extend beyond the kitchen, and eighteen-year-old Sophronia, who has an uncanny affinity for ghosts—are determined to hunt down and eliminate the creature.

Their case is complicated by the ghost of Maureen’s former partner, Phil Evers, who refuses to cross to the other side, and his very much alive daughter Jillian, who shows up demanding to know how Maureen inherited the Manor. When Sophronia uses her power to try to help Phil across, a huge spirit storm blows up at Shadow Valley Manor, and she disappears. With the life of one of their own in deadly peril, Maureen and the team have a ticking clock to find Sophronia and bring down the Medusa.

On reread, this is less standalone than I remembered - but I'll give it a pass (even for the cliffhanger) because this is a really enjoyable series.

Maureen Keslyn is back! And this installment in the series lives up to all the promise of it's predecessor.

We pick up where we left off, with the exception of a very unintrusive and mostly spoiler-free recap; that aside, this book really does stand on it's own (which is something that too few series are doing at the moment)

Maureen is still adjusting to life running a "rest home", which apparently includes the horrifying Thanksgiving tradition of setting the local middle-school children loose amongst the residents. But she's also having to continue to deal with the fallout from the major events of the first book, including the breakdown of her marriage and .

The central mystery expands further on the discoveries made in the first book. The danger did feel less outright threatening than that first instalment; partially because we're now fully aware of how much ass it is Maureen can kick (even intangibility won't save you), but also partially because the danger is less direct this time around, and a decent proportion is reported to our protagonist instead of experienced.

Overall, an absolutely fantastic new entry to the series, and one that has me revved up for the next one already!

I was provided with a free copy of this novel in return for an honest review. Big thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity

This is the first book I have ever read Kerry Schafer. This is book #2 in this series but I had no problem understanding what was going on. This book was wonderfully written, an exciting mystery, and fantastic characters.

The second book in one of my favorite new series hit shelves earlier this month, yahoo!

Maureen Keslyn is no stranger to the weird and supernatural. She spent her career working for the FBI's top secret Unit, investigating just those things. But she's retired now, thanks to a disagreement that left the Unit ready to kill her to keep her secrets. The death of her old partner Phil left her in charge of Shadow Valley Manor, a retirement home with more than it's fair share of secrets, keeping her plenty busy.

When a local man is found dead, with pictures of an unidentified girl Maureen and the local sheriff have taken to calling the World Tree Girl, they begin to fear that one of Shadow Valley Manor's worst may have gotten loose. The girl's body has gone missing, but not before a blogger revealed that all the blood in her body had turned into clear goo. The dead man, who coincidentally was just fired from the coroner's office that lost said body, appears to have been that blogger. And his own death appears to be somewhat suspicious as well. Could the Unit have gotten to him?

I love Maureen. I mentioned that in my review of the first entry in the series, Dead Before Dying. And this second picks up pretty much where that last one left off. So you do have to read them in order.

In addition to the dead body that Maureen and Jake are trying to track down, you know, to assure themselves that the whole blood turning to goo thing doesn't mean what they think it means (read Dead Before Dying), Shadow Valley Manor is having some issues as well. It seems the local spirits aren't crossing over the way they need to and they're ALL flocking to Shadow Valley Manor.

And then Phil's daughter arrives, claiming she's going to contest the will that left Maureen in charge of Shadow Valley Manor!

There are a lot of threads in World Tree Girl and I didn't feel that all of them came together quite as cleanly as they could have. A middle schooler catches wind of the happenings at Shadow Valley Manor, for example, and it kind of looked like she'd play more of a role in the story than she actually did and there are hints at something odd with Matt, the cook and undercover Unit agent (now double agent working with Maureen), just to name a couple.

But I enjoyed returning to Shadow Valley Manor and spending more time with Maureen. She really is my new favorite genre heroine! I just hope some of the threads are supposed to extend into the next entry where we'll hopefully get more.

A thrilling follow-up to Dead Before Dying.
Maureen and company continue the hunt for the Medusa after a girl with a body tattoo of the world tree is found drained of blood and replaced with a jelly substance. It's one paranormal that Maureen doesn't know how to kill. After another man is found and Maureen's sidekick Sophronia goes missing Maureen knows time is running out to find her friend alive and stop the Medusa.
Although some have read this as a stand-alone and enjoyed it, since it picks up where Dead Before Dying ends I highly recommend you start there. Both are well written with a fast pace that keep you turning the pages. I'm really enjoying the well rounded cast of characters especially the feisty, humorous middle aged Maureen. If paranormal mysteries intrigue you, I recommend you pick up this series and enjoy the journey.

This was a nice surprise! I really enjoyed this book. It was an original, easy read and had interesting characters. Although it is second in the series, I didn't feel lost at all. The story was fun and different. Now, I want to go back and read the first one.

This is yet another great read!

While this book is perfectly readable as a standalone, I'm going to tell you to get your hands on Dead Before Dying first, because you will want all the Maureen you can get!

Maureen sure knows how to find trouble, and when she doesn't find it, it manages to find her.

I was on the edge of my seat and couldn't put the book down. I had to find out if the Medusa was indeed on a killing spree, who was involved, and if Maureen would be in time to rescue those she loves.

I will confess I did want to scream at Maureen from time to time to be more resolute to those people who bothered her. She was being much too polite in my opinion. I would have lost my temper and booted them out of my manor if I was her.

That aside this is a wonderful, action-packed and suspenseful read. Maureen is awesome, but the other characters are all really cool as well. I especially loved Mac and Sophronia, but Jake and Matt are also great.

And the ending! Wow! I need the next book! Let there be a next book!

All in all I loved this book and will keep an eye out for news on this series and anything else Kerry writes.

This story has a Thanksgiving subtheme so treat yourself to a holiday story and maybe your family get together will feel less traumatic this year.

We return to the Shadow Valley Manor Retirement Home just in time for Thanksgiving. A local tradition is for the middle schooler's to come to the Manor to have Thanksgiving dinner with the seniors. Not being a local, or interested in the Manor being infested with middle schoolers, Maureen keeps trying to shut that down. Unfortunately, Sheriff Jake Callahan and Matt, FBI undercover agent and the Manor's chef, fear teacher Mrs. Schrader a lot more than they do Maureen, or the sudden infestation of ghosts that have settled in the Manor, to cancel this year's long-time tradition.

Maureen is more interest in helping solve the supposed suicide of Dason Williams, especially once she and Jake realize that he is the blogger from Underground Weird. A blog which posts photos of autopsies and wonders if all those on the table are actually human. Everything about this situation sheds doubt that Dason would commit suicide, especially when it would have been Maureen's job with the FBI paranormal division to shut down these kinds of conspiracy theorists. While Maureen's stance would be more to convince them that their ideas are crazy, there were others that thought nothing of using deadly force to stop the spread of information.

As if infestations of ghosts and pre-teens isn't stressful enough, Phil Evers's (Maureen's now deceased former partner/lover) daughter Jill has arrived and wants to know why her father left the Manor to Maureen.  Maureen and Jill have a...rocky relationship since that time that Jill stabbed Maureen for dating her dad.  Now every time Maureen turns around, she is tripping over Jill and checking for more knives in her back. Jill swears that she is trying to help but there is something off about the whole thing.

But the biggest problem is that Sophronia is missing. Sophie is still freaked out about what she did with Dr. Sorenson's soul and after another altercation with a spirit, she ran out of the Manor after receiving a mysterious text from Ravenna. Who is this mysterious Ravenna and is she someone who will cause Sophie more harm than good?

THOUGHTS:
I really like this group. I especially like my literary doppleganger Maureen, the mid-fifty former FBI agent who is feeling her age, plus some, after her last official investigation got her beat up by a giant slug. She is more freaked out by the middle schooler infestation than the ghosts.

Sadly, there only appears to be three novels and one short story to this series. The last one (which I will be starting soon) was released in 2021. It is not impossible that there could be more stories but it seems unlikely. I am torn between starting Dead Before Dinner next or saving the last novel for when I need a literary palette cleanser.  Nerd problems.

I give World Tree Girl (book 2 in The Shadow Valley Manor Series) by Kerry Schafer 5 stars.

This is such a wonderful series and this book does not fail to disappoint. It all starts with the mystery surrounding a dead body that is found. And it just goes from there. There are so many things going on, you will not be bored for one second. Not only are all the characters great, Maureen is one of my favorite lead characters of all time. Kerry Schafer channels Agatha Christie by giving us an older leading lady. So many of the lead characters in the paranormal books lately are in their teens or early 20s. It’s refreshing to see that you can be older and still kick paranormal butt. And Maureen is the perfect one to do it. She is not perfect and she definitely doesn’t have her life in order. But she knows who she is and feels the need to help people.

The story itself is riveting too. While the main goal is to see who or what is causing the problems, there are other chaotic things happening at the same time. This is like everyday life too. Very rarely does just one thing happen at a time.

There is mystery, there is humor, there is the supernatural, and possibly a bit of alcohol to take the edge off. I highly recommend this engaging paranormal mystery.

First of all, Thanks to NetGalley for giving me a chance to read and review this book!

Short Blurb:

Shadow Valley, a retirement home that Maureen Keslyn both owns and resides in, hasn't quite recovered from its last battle with the supernatural. Nor have the members of Maureen's team. Jake, the sheriff who has come to believe in powers beyond what he can see, nevertheless remains skeptical on how to deal with those powers when they become malevolent. Matt, the cook at the manor, as well as a federal agent, finds his loyalties fraying in all directions. And then there is Sophronia, the youngest member, a girl who has abilities beyond what she can control, and fears of how powerful she can become.
Into this powderkeg walks Jillian, the daughter of Maureen's former partner. Jillian once tried to stab Maureen, and her presence isn't likely to end more pleasantly this time around. She's up to something, and Maureen needs to find out what.
Maureen and Jake are called upon to investigate a suicide that looks like anything but, and their search through the history of their town turns up unsolved murders, and an evil that has been lurking for decades. To bring the fight to Shadow Valley gives them their best chance at overcoming a demon more powerful than any they have ever encountered--but it also puts everyone at the greatest risk. And when Sophronia disappears, the clock is ticking to find her safe, before she becomes the latest victim.

Cover Review: The cover is one of the simplest and most beautiful cover I've ever seen. It's something I'd be proud to display on my shelf.

Review:

World Tree Girl is an exciting novel with a lot of twists and a whole lot of suspense.

I immensely enjoyed reading this book, and it has surely become one of my Favorites.

The paranormal has been weaved with an extraordinary precision into a murder mystery, making this book an even exciting journey!

I loved the fact that the major characters were middle-aged, rather than the usual teenagers/twenties people that crowd the current thrillers. It gave the book a whole new class.

The sarcasm included was cherry on the cake, making this a complete, fully loaded experience.

World Tree Girl gets 5 stars for its utterly beautiful cover, and the even more exciting story!

World Tree Girl: A Shadow Valley Manor Novel (The Shadow Valley Manor Series Book 2) by Kerry Schafer is the second book in her A Shadow Valley Manor series. This story is a paranormal-suspense story that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat through most of this story. This story can be read as a standalone but I would highly suggest that you read the first book first as you will enjoy it just as much plus you get the writing style of this author. You will enjoy how this story will pull you in from the first word until the very last. These characters will take you on a roller coaster ride of various emotions that you won't forget. The authors attention to detail is just as great as her creation of characters. Find out what happens when a girl is found dead that is tattooed with a tree and the journey they take finding the killer.

Maureen Keslyn is a former FBI agent that is a paranormal investigator and also the new owner of the Shadow Valley Manor Retirement Home. She know that the girl with the full body tattoo of a tree is just not another corpse. There is all the signs that Medusa is behind it. The girl is empty of blood and oozing a strange jelly like substance. Could Medusa be on another killing spree? Maureen and her team are determined to find and eliminate this creature. To add to this suspense, her former dead partner refuses to cross to the other side. To top it off, his daughter shows up and demands to know how Maureen inherited the Manor. What will happen when one of Maureen's team members try to help him pass but ends up disappearing herself? They are on a ticking clock to find her, will time expire and they lose her forever?

Maureen and her team work really well together and the suspense just keeps on coming throughout the whole story. This story has many things happening in it. When unexpected guests show up and I don't mean just living guests either is when the story really picks up. What will happen when a spirit storm hits the Manor? Is everyone safe? These characters all work well together to find what happened to their team mate. One of the things that I enjoyed about this book is that Maureen is not the typical character. Her age is older, not the younger ones I am use to reading about. She is kind of sassy but knows her stuff and has a sense of humor. The things that happen when the daughter shows up, really heat things up but you will have to read this book to find out. The other character that I really enjoyed but we don't get to see a lot of is Mac. He is kind of mysterious but yet seemed to know most of what was going on. I hope we get to see a little more of this Harley riding guy in the future. The last thing that I enjoyed about this book is that there wasn't just one main character but Maureen's whole team was. They really make this story flow, they had their own backgrounds and complement each other. You will have to read this book in order to find out more as the slightest detail could give something away.

This is my second book by Kerry Schafer and I can't wait to see what she will bring for us next. Kerry lives with a real life Viking in the deep, dark forest. She writes fantasy with teeth sunk into reality and mystery that delves into paranormal. She also writes women's fiction under the name Kerry Anne King. This was a fast story that will keep you engaged until the end. The twists and turns will keep you turning page after page. You will never see things coming until they do. I highly suggest this story as I know you will want to see if Maureen and her team eliminate Medusa

World Tree Girl is Book 2 of The Shadow Valley Manor Series Book. It is a paranormal / sci-fi /detective/mystery story. The story is written from the point of view of Maureen Keslyn an ex FBI investigator. It continues from where Book 1 finished so you will need to read Dead Before Dying first to understand who and what Maureen Keslyn is.
Maureen Keslyn is approaching sixty, is not afraid to take a risk and push herself to her absolute limit. At the request of an old FBI colleague (Phil Evers) she checks herself into Shadow Valley Manor Rest Home to recuperate from injuries caused by her previous investigation. After Phil is murdered because of his investigations into paranormal activities linked to the FBI, she learns she too has been compromised and is being followed by an undercover FBI agent. After solving the mysterious deaths in the Manor and the village and putting an end to the supernatural / paranormal activity causing the deaths Maureen has settled down to manage the Manor and ensure its elderly residents are looked after well, especially as she is the new owner. Just as the reality of what she has committed herself too and the boredom is setting in, Jake (the local Sheriff) alerts her that more paranormal / supernatural activity is suspected after the young tattooed body of a young girl is found in mysterious circumstances. Jake needs her to work with him again.
Maureen doesn’t hesitate to find someone to manage the manor and she and her team set off on another paranormal / supernatural investigation. Phil tries to become involved as a ghost and his daughter shows up to further complicate matters for the team and cause more heartache for Maureen. As more truths about the past life of the Manor as a home for unmarried mothers and details of what happened to the young pregnant women living there is uncovered Maureen and the team realise the danger for themselves and others is not yet over and it is reaching much further out than they ever thought possible. As one of the team (a young girl with a talent for communing with ghosts and crossing souls over after death) goes missing they are working against time to find the supernatural being and destroy it before it can destroy them and others.
What ensues is a very complex plot and investigation involving old characters having hidden traits or identities, new characters and new evidence leading to intrigue, suspicion, lies, deceit and death. Can Maureen, Jake and their team win against time or will the supernatural take control and kill the living as it needs?
Again the characters created by Kerry Schafer are human, likeable and realistic. As a woman recuperating from surgery on her leg and abdomen, Maureen has to struggle physically to get herself or others out of harm’s way. This adds to the tension in the story in a believable way.
As with book one her partnerships and relationships with other characters (both old and new) are also written honestly and realistically. New characters are well developed and multi-dimensional. The paranormal activities and events are again well written being full of tension, emitting a feeling of panic and intrigue for what would happen next. The World Tree Girl is also a fast paced continuation of the series. The ending was a little bit of a cliff hanger where Maureen’s future was concerned so I feel there will be another book in the series, which I need to read! I enjoyed reading these two books, indeed I found it very hard to put either one of them down. If you love paranormal / supernatural mysteries you will love the Shadow Valley Manor Series.

[Blog]::[Youtube]::[Twitter]::[Instagram]::[Pinterest]::[Bloglovin]

The main reason why I enjoyed this story is because of the crime fiction element. I felt the author wrote the mystery of the world tree girl and its details very nicely. I had no idea where the story would go, mainly when the author introduces new characters like Ravenna. Moreover, the author adds fun elements like tarot readings and mysterious science experiments that kept the story fresh. Also, similar to the previous book, there are many moments of thrilling adventure, especially towards the end. One of the memorable scenes in the story is when Maureen goes to Aunt Leo to get answers and interrogate the parents.

The characters stand out in the story too. I enjoyed Maureen, Jake, and Sophie in the lead. The three of them share an incredible connection, and it was interesting to see how they handled the case. I particularly liked Sophie and felt she is the most complex because she doesn’t know how to handle her emotions.

However, while I enjoyed reading the story, I felt that the first book was much better. The only reason I say this is because of the characters. I felt like we got to know many supporting characters like the tenants of the Manor and learning about their specialties in the first book. But, this book primarily focused on Maureen, Jake, and Sophie investigating the case. We don’t get to see much of the tenants from the first book, which was a tad disappointing. However, I did enjoy the new characters like Jill and Ravenna.

Like the first book, this one also teases what we can expect in the next book, which I look forward to reading. Overall, “World Tree Girl” is a lovely continuation of the series.

World Tree girl is the second book in the Shadow Valley Manor Series by Kerry Schafer. This is an action-packed paranormal mystery, with drama, suspense, supernatural elements, ghosts, and plenty of tension.
If you haven’t read the first book in the series, Dead Before Dying, I recommend that you do because a lot of back story, character details and other information can be found in that book- not to mention, it’s a really great read.
This story picks up pretty much where the last book left off. Maureen Kreslyn former FBI Agent and paranormal investigator, went through quite an ordeal in the last book. She’s now taken over the running of Shadow Valley Manor and still dealing with damage and injuries that aren’t fully healed yet.
But the paranormal is never very far away for Maureen, as a strange death leads her and Jake into investigating the unusual circumstances surrounding the discovery of a girls body, who has a full body tattoo of the world tree-and it’s unusual because all her blood is missing and instead she has a strange, slimy, jelly-like substance oozing from her body. Maureen is concerned that this is the work of Medusa- who they will need to hunt down and try to eliminate. She has her team behind her to help in any way they can- Jake, the local sheriff; Matt, the cook at Shadow Valley, and Sophronia who has a special gift. When a massive surge of spirits descends on the manor, one of their own disappears and the rest of the team scramble to find her before it’s too late. Add in the ghost of her former partner who refuses to cross-over, his disgruntled and problem causing daughter, all the zebras at the manor, some local youngsters, trust issues and more…. And we have an incredibly riveting story that will grab your attention from the beginning till the end.
This is a gripping, fast-paced story, with a complex and multi-layered storyline which Ms. Schafer choreographs into an incredible read.
The characters are well developed, interesting and likable.
I couldn’t put this book down and read it in one sitting. I am looking forward to seeing what Ms. Schafer does next!

Thank you, Ms. Schafer!

World Tree Girl: A Shadow Valley Manor Novel (The Shadow Valley Manor Series Book 2)
By: Kerry Schafer
5 out of 5 stars

The story World Tree Girl: A Shadow Valley Manor Novel (The Shadow Valley Manor Series Book 2) by Kerry Schafer is a thrilling paranormal book. I still remember when I read the first book in this series and found that I had discovered a writer that created an amazing story and wonderful characters. That feeling continues with her second book in the Shadow Valley Manor Series. I have always loved books regarding the paranormal and this author has created a story that had me hooked from the very beginning and not wanting to put it down until I had read the ending page. This story follows the investigation into the death of a girl with a full-body tattoo of a world tree. She is found without any blood in her veins and having been injected with a jelly-like substance. To Maureen Keslyn this can mean only one thing. The paranormal creature Medusa has started another killing spree. Now she and her team must follow the clues to find this creature and eliminate it. Her team is made up of Jake, the local sheriff and a man that has caught Maureen’s eye, Matt, a cook at the Shadow Valley Manor Retirement Home, the home that Maureen is now the new owner of, and also Sophronia who has a unique gift with spirits. She also finds herself with unexpected guests, some of which are not living. Then when a large spirit storm hits Shadow Valley Manor Sophronia disappears. Now with the danger growing and with the life of one of their own on the line will Maureen and the team be able to both eliminate the Medusa and find Sophronia safe from harm?

I highly recommend reading this series in order. The characters overlap from one book to the next and some of the situations that happen in the first book are touched on in the second. I found that it made for a smoother reading experience. This is a series that has me hooked and I can’t wait to read the next book.

The World Tree Girl held me captive from page one and right up until the end. A book filled with suspense and interesting characters. This is the first I read in the series (which was not a problem) and would read more.

This book was provided to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

This is the second book in the Shadow Valley Manor Mysteries which circles around Maureen Keslyn, a middle-age paranormal investigator who used to work for the FBI. Now she does her own thing which shouldn't include running a Retirement Home (which she inherited), trying to stop the paranormal hybrid Medusa's killing spree (who should be dead) or trying to communicate with her dead former investigation partner Phil (who should have crossed to the other side).

Captivating from start to finish this book really sucked me in. Who doesn't love good conspiracies and mad scientists? The partly magical world which enfolds is also interesting with a new take, even if it draws heavily on common and traditional ideas. Maureen and her team is confronted with Phil's daughter Jill who's not happy with Maureen's inheritance, ghosts running wild, a murder they can't seem to solve and a thanksgiving dinner they apparently they cant refuse.

Maureen is an interesting character with a lot of baggage and so are her friends in the small town where she resides. If anything I felt that the background and experience of Maureen could have been explored more, sometimes her age only shines through her physical limits. As modern hero's goes they often have wounds and doesn't "bounce back" easily which means that those limits doesn't set Maureen apart from some of her younger contemporary counterparts.

The mystery itself was well told, it enfolded in a natural but not predictable way and at a good pace. It definitely left you wanting more.

Wow, Kerry Schafer does it again! If I could give World Tree Girl more than five stars, I would. Not only is this a unique story, it is so well written that I fell in and couldn’t get out.
Maureen, Jake, Sophronia and Matt are together again and they have company. Lots and lots of company. They are joined by the new coroner, Mac and middle schooler, G, short for Guinevere. Together, they make one great tale of ghosts, spirits and madness. This time, Maureen and company are out to finish off an old nemesis for good.
I just can’t say enough good things about this book. Kerry Schafer just keeps getting better and better. I love the people in this book. They are so well thought out. Each interaction is something I could easily see happening. It is so well written, I felt as though I were right there with them. The characters are growing in depth and character. Maureens Miscreants is growing in numbers as well, each one adding new depth and new vibrancy to the tale.
Ms. Schafer is a Master (or maybe Misstress) story teller. She spins her tale with an amazing eye for detail. Maureen’s disability may slow her down, but it does not stop her. She is written with compassion, but also with real grit and a definite determination that she will not only survive it, but she will conquer it. She is like so many women “of a certain age” who refuse to give up and will not back down when it comes to living. Maureen would much rather wear out than rust out. Ms. Schafer writes about aging as a woman with compassion and empathy. She has captured the essence of the war against aging that all of us eventually wage. Maureen is definitely winning that war. I love these books and I am heartily recommending them to my friends and relations!!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

World Tree Girl is the second installment in the Shadow Valley Manor series. The series follows retired FBI agent Maureen Keslyn, reluctant proprietor of Shadow Valley Manor, a retirement residence willed to her by her deceased former partner/lover. Having spent most of her career investigating the paranormal, Maureen is on high alert knowing all too well that sometimes mysterious occurrences have fantastic explanations. When a local morgue worker with connections to Maureen’s previous case turns up dead, she and her partner Jake are immediately plunged headlong into an investigation that defies logic and reason. Once again, the manor becomes the epicentre for paranormal activity; a quirky backdrop for a supernatural thriller.

Amidst the main mystery are several interpersonal entanglements rounding out the story. Maureen and her crew face constant danger, the origins of which remain largely unknown. As a main character, Maureen kicks ass. She’s middle aged; a touch I find refreshing and honest. In a genre dominated by 20-something heroines, I respect Schafer’s bravery in choosing to work outside of the norm. Maureen is tough, smart, and witty. Her attraction to Jake also reminds readers that older characters can also be attractive, sexual beings.

I’m excited to see where this series goes. For every answer uncovered, a slew of new questions arise. World Tree Girl has elements of government conspiracy giving it a definite X-Files vibe. Shadow Valley Manor is proving to be an intriguing, original series. Let’s hope it’s got some longevity as well.

World Tree Girl :A Shadow Valley Manor Novel (The Shadow Valley Manor Series Book 2)By Kerry Schafer

World Tree Girl : A Shadow Valley Manor Novel  (The Shadow Valley Manor Series Book 2) By Kerry Schafer is the second book in her A Shadow Valley Manor series. This is a  paranormal -suspense story that will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens. This is the second book but can be read as a standalone novel, but I recommend going back and reading the first book as you will enjoy it as much as this book.I was drawn in from the beginning to the end. The authors writing style is wonderfully done with great attention to detail and the characters will essentially take you on a roller-coaster of a ride.

Maureen Keslyn a former FBI agent and paranormal investigator is also the new owner A Shadow Valley Manor Retirement Home. She knows the girl with a full body tattoo is way more than a corpse and she has a feeling Medusa is behind it Maureen works well with her team and to say the suspense is through out the whole story. There are twists and turns and I don't mean the usual ones, this is a spirit  storm of sorts

What will happen when the spirts hit the Manor?I truly enjoyed this amazing book. All the characters flowed and Maureen wasn't at all what I expected, but  as I kept reading it became clear. She,is a bit sassy ,smart, and a sense of humor. I  also loved the edge ypu feel while reading just when I thought I had it figured out, boom a twist.Find out how the story ends.I highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I was more than happy to pick up “World Tree Girl” by Kerry Schafer having just recently finished reading “Dead Before Dying” – and loving it.

It’s no secret that I enjoy reading Paranormal anything. So when I jumped into this book, I was more than happy to find out that it picks up right where “Dead Before Dying” left off.

We get Maureen Keslyn – a seasoned FBI detective for the Paranormal Division back, given that she’s the new owner for Shadow Valley Manor. And like before, she’s on the hunt for something unkind, something that her and her “partners” believe is on a killing spree.

Unfortunately for her, she also has to deal with the ghost of her old friend, and recently deceased Phil Ever – who use to be the owner of Shadow Valley Manor. She’s just not sure as to why he refuses to carry or move on. Thankfully, Sophronia – a young woman who seems to be on her team can communicate with ghosts and tries to help on that end.

Like the first book, this one is full of suspense. I was happy to find myself on the edge of my seat while I was reading it. I was more than thrilled to find that the author had managed to capture my attention and hold it for a good portion of the book. I felt like I was able to loose myself and enjoy the characters and their “adventures”. I felt like I was there with them, on the hunt for the unknown.

Again, Kerry has impressed me with the ability to create a world where I can get lost, one where it’s easy to follow and enjoyable. This is a definite 5 Star Review for me!!

World Tree Girl is the second book in the Maureen Keslyn series. In this installment the impromptu team are trying to track down Medusa. She's pretty much nothing but a gelatinous blood sucking invisible monster. She's pretty scary. Even scarier is the fact that she can take on the face of the last person she's killed. She could be anyone, anywhere.
Maureen has gotten used to running the manor. She still relies on Jake to bring her any weird cases. So its not really a surprise when she finds herself at the scene of an apparent suicide. Only she's fairly certain the boy didn't comment suicide. She thinks the boy is the mystery blogger that's been posting pictures of paranormal killings. As they dig deeper into his death the plot thickens. Phil's daughter shows up and starts giving Maureen hell. Middle school kids show up at the manor for their traditional Thanksgiving dinner with the zebras. Too bad they show up in the middle of a ghost uprising. Luckily no one is hurt.
Slowly the whole tale starts to come together and its bigger than they first thought. Phil's ghost hangs around to help as much as he can, but really... he's not much help. The team has to work through their trust issues and help each other out to get through the whole situation.
I loved this book. Maureen is the same awesome lady as in the first book. The author has done an awesome job creating this world. Makes me wonder if it isn't all real.

WORLD TREE GIRL by Kerry Schaefer, follows Maureen, a paranormal investigator, and her loosely assembled team as they probe into several recent deaths and disappearances. The deeper Maureen and her team get into the study of these cases, the more it becomes apparent to Maureen that a malicious villain she thought she took care might behind it all.
While definitely a singular writing style, WORLD TREE GIRL reminds me of X-Files and Charlene Harris, particularly matching fascinating supernatural elements with amusing characters and banter throughout the book. As usual, the reader will be playing catch up on events that happened in the first book in the series, however by the end of the book the back story has been adequately filled in. Schafer lays out obvious clues, but she also hides some clues carefully, crafting a good balance of understanding and mystery that creates suspense and excitement. The cast of characters around Maureen are pleasantly varied: some are fun and charming, while others are menacing and gloomy, while still more are endearing and funny. To sum up, all of these components made for a entertaining and lively read.
With a supernatural mystery, WORLD TREE GIRL should have mass appeal and I'm interested if there is another book coming in the series.
Thank you to Diversion Books, Kerry Schafer, and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion!

This book carries on where the first on pretty much finished so I would suggest reading that one first.

I enjoyed this one just as much as the first and it was a great story. I found it gripping and intriguing and very hard to put down but, unfortunately, had to as life get getting in the way!

The main character of Maureen is a major part of why I love this book. She is down to earth and real. I enjoyed that I got to learn and “see” more of Shadow Valley and its residents in this story. The descriptive of the new settings was very detailed and helped transport me into the tale throughout.

The wit and mystery within the pages of this book was just as strong as the first which made it and easy read. This helps with the paranormal, strange and other worldly goings on that occur and keep the story feeling very realistic.

I love the atmosphere this book creates and how unique the story is. If you are looking for something a bit different and out there this is the read for you.

It is a very unpredictable story and swept me up so much that I didn't really try to figure out what was happening, I just read and kept reading because I had to know.

I finished this book with an audible wow and am left hoping that there will be more in this series. I feel there will be from the ending and think there is so much more for Maureen to discover and solve. I hope to return to Shadow Valley very soon!

Not as polished as first book of series. Cliffhanger ending.

This is a very readable supernatural and horror mystery with a unique protagonist worth following as she and her team of misfits investigate another murder. Maureen Keslyn—ex-FBI paranormal investigator extraordinaire, who worked for a deadly, clandestine FBI Unit—discovers more about the vast supernatural world, most of which remains hidden from non-supernaturals. As with Book #1 of this series, the complex but meandering murder storyline serves as the backbone from which the supernatural and horror subplots hang.

I believe this book can be read as a stand-alone, but first-time readers will miss backstories, running storylines and character-related subtleties introduced in Book #1. This book begins soon after “Dead Before Dying” and mentions earlier characters whilst adding important new ones. Maureen does need more Scoobies in her gang. These include a middle-schooler who’s not that believable a character, a tattooist/Tarot card reader, an aphasic but powerful medium, ruthless scientists who’ll kill to protect their secrets, and more vicious supernatural creatures.

The multiple threads of this storyline are not as tightly woven in this author’s sophomore effort. Nor are the main characters as convincing when explaining non-coincidences and obviously supernatural phenomena to the mundane-townspeople.

The ending—which is worse than that of Book #1—has a whopper of a cliffhanger.

World Tree Girl by Kerry Schafer is book two in her Shadow Valley Manor series. While this book is fine to read as a stand alone if you read Dead Before Dying first you will be able to enjoy the small nuances of knowing the characters full background. Not that it's at all hard to enjoy Maureen’s quick wit and at times paranoia. If you are like me you will quiet enjoy Schafer’s unusual tale. In this second installment Maureen and her team are out to stop a killing spree by a paranormal creature that no one is sure how to kill. While Maureen is more mature than the usual heroin and she is still dealing with injuries not yet healed. She and her friends under the cover of a retirement home owner must learn how to stop this creature while finding out who the girl the the tattoos is and just what happened to her. It is an intriguing journey that you may just find you can't put down. Schafer made sure to include all the things we crave in a paranormal best seller. She gives us ghost and secrets, drama and feelings. Both love and hate are intertwined throughout this addictive story.
In my opinion this story has the makings for a best seller. So do yourself a favor and pick this one up. You will definitely want to get on board for this ride.

World Tree Girl: A Shadow Valley Manor Novel (The Shadow Valley Manor Series Book 2) by Kerry Schafer

5 Stars

Ok so I'm sold, at least when it comes to this author. I don't read paranormal, ever. So the fact that I couldn't read and turn pages fast enough has me convinced that in this author's case I will now read paranormal. What a fantastic and creative story. There is just so much going on in this whole series and the first book was excellent and this one is as good if not better. I love Maureen, I love that this author chose a middle aged female lead with a such a strong personality, she isn't perfect and doesn't claim to be. This story had a great flow that moved fast but not so fast that I found myself confused. I want more and I'm hoping there's more to come for the residents of Shadow Valley. I'm also hoping to find out if Maureen is able to trade in her handcuffs and finally get unpacked and moved into her new home lol, and whether Sophronia’s feeling at the end about the sheriff rings true.

I sincerely loved this story and if you love paranormal or are like me and and don't, go read these books and you will be sold as I was. Very talented writer and a new favorite for me.

World Tree Girl is the second book of The Shadow Valley Manor Series by Kerry Schafer. World Tree Girl continues from where the first book finished so I suggest you read Dead Before Dying first to understand to get the backstory of the characters. I really enjoy reading Kerry’s books she has just the right amount of intrigue, mystery and paranormal.

Maureen is an ex FBI investigator getting on with her life after being shot. And is trying to adjust to being the new owner of Shadow Valley Manor. When the local Sheriff brings a new case to Maureens door, she can’t help but jump at the chance to show that a local death is more than it seems. Along with the usual troops from the first book, you have a paranormal front seat along with the team as they unearth things you can only imagine. Will the team be in more danger than they realise? Will the team survive to find the truth.

Kerry has written a complex yet compelling plot that you don’t want to miss. This story is well written with lots of twists and turns and surprises. If you like crime, mystery and paranormal and the X files then you will enjoy this series.

Reading World Tree Girl by Kerry Schafer gave me a sensation that I can only describe as being 12 on Christmas Morning. Each page was a light on the tree, the words were the smell of warm cookies. The ending was finding out that you finally got a pony.

Maureen Keslyn, part spy, part retiree, owner of the senior home called Shadow Valley Manor, is my kind of protagonist. Feisty, no nonsense, a woman who has been-there-done-that; yet, despite what she might want you to believe, kept her humanity. Most of it. The important bits.

Creating the characters is one of the aspects that Kerry Schafer gets so spot on that I end up feeling that I could show up at Shadow Valley Manor and have coffee, and know everyone right away. (I think I wouldn’t mind retiring to Shadow Valley Manor, although I don’t think I can afford it. Maybe they have a scholarship program?)

This was a lovely bit of mayhem, suitably gruesome, tantalizingly convoluted. If you like a bit of mystery in your paranormal adventures, and some dark humor, or if you have been looking for a ripping good tale that features a more mature leading cast? Check out the Shadow Valley Manor Series. It’s great.

Overall I really enjoyed this (3.5) - it picks up right where book 1 leaves off, gives you a recap and then plows you forward with little to no breaks. The timeline is short, and action packed, leaving little time for character growth, as a plot heavy book, but the author is able to pack in some good work there too.

Because of the majority of the book is told from just one perspective, which is highly entertaining, and because that character is well into her adult life, there isn't a lot of room for personal growth, but you do get to watch her grow in the relationships she is building around her. The subplot romance was well done, and the friendship growth is well flushed out.

There are time in this book where I literally find myself saying "Uh how did we get here?!" In some spots the plot goes from 0-60 and then flips you around 3 times and you just have to hang on and recognize the story will right itself again. While this can be jarring, the author puts just the right amount of humor and teamwork in it that it didn't bother me as much as it did in book 1.

Will absolutely keep reading!
