Ken Akamatsu (赤松 健, Akamatsu Ken, July 5, 1968 -) is a Japanese mangaka from Tokyo.

In his teenage years, Akamatsu failed the entrance exam to Tokyo University, and applied for Film Study instead (it is speculated that this is where he got the idea for Love Hina). Eventually, he became famous as an illustrator featured in Comiket (short for Comic Market, a comic convention bi-annually held in Japan). He used the pen name Awa Mizuno (水野 亜和, MIZUNO Awa). Akamatsu, still in college, then proceeded to win the Weekly Shonen Magazine award twice. His "A Kid's Game for One Summer" was awarded the coveted 50th Shonen Magazine Newcomer's Award soon after he graduated.

After a big hit with A.I. Love You, he finally made a grand success with his new manga, Love Hina. The series appeared in Weekly Shonen Magazine and has been collected in eleven volumes (with fourteen volumes in total), which have sold over 6 million copies in Japan, and received the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen in 2001.
Akamatsu had added elements of his own life experiences to the story, and this was said to have induced a unique feeling to the manga especially for Western readers, whose lack of familiarity with Japanese culture for the most part added to the effect. The series, published in America in 2002, was especially well received in many overseas countries - Akamatsu was surprised that even foreign readers found Love Hina to be "cute" and to their liking.

He is now married to his wife 'Kanon' Akamatsu, who was previously a singer/idol. He is currently working on his latest manga series, Negima!: Magister Negi Magi, which is his longest running manga so far. Like Love Hina, has also been made into an anime series. A second independent retelling of Negima was made called Negima!?. Both series were produced by XEBEC (Negima!? was produced by SHAFT).

In the opening of Negima! 21, things are looking bleak indeed for our heroes, with Negi struck down and the students scattered to the far corners of the magical world. And the little brat Fate gets away without so much as a scratch.

The series was starting to falter a bit after the conclusion of the School Festival arc, but now it has gotten quite good again, with Negi's ongoing search for his father descending into an extremely bad situation. More than half of his students are completely missing, and of the ones he's located, three are now slaves for at least five years... unless, of course, Negi can find a way out for them.

As is characteristic for the series, there are some very nice little character moments, including one in which we learn what it's like for Chachamaru to be wound up. Negi is oblivious to the sort of pleasure he's actually giving her just by turning the key, and the more he winds the closer to what appears to be euphoria she gets. Our little boy is growing up so fast... he's already screwing his first girl! *is shot*

Thanks to a neat little doll-body, even Sayo, the ghost, is now finally an active participant in the series, and we get to see how the cynical Chisame handles being stranded in a magical jungle with... well... pretty perverse magical monsters.

Volume 21 is a very fun, entertaining installment in this series, and like its predecessor, ends on quite the cliffhanger. Negima! is at its strongest when we have a good, solid story going. Ken Akamatsu has written such a story here, and with so many of our favorite characters still MIA, it's going to be a long wait for Volume 22....

FINALLY!! An interesting volume!

My hope has been slightly restored that this series might pick up again with the magical world story arc... but the ending also made me worry that this story arc is going to be filled with random side stories as well. Hopefully they are interesting side stories. But for now, I'm happy to say I enjoyed this volume.

Meh.... Am I getting bored with this series? Perhaps, but I'm committed to Asuna and Negi's story now

This splitting up thing was a bit harsh for the story

Having to locate the others in an alien world is an interesting concept. Also, do I smell another tournament? DB influence?

Negi gets stabbed in the shoulder! By Fate!

Anya is Negi's childhood friend that secretly has a crush on Negi and the only other student who graduated with Negi that has been named.

Happily, the story is interesting again! I enjoy the fan service, but constant partying makes for dull reading. Negi tracking down his students in a strange land sounds far more promising.

Things are looking bleak for Negi's gang. The white haired boy that made his debut appearance in volume 6 of the series has returned, extremely coincidentally along with it. Negi is severely weakened, unable to fight full on, unfortunately having his friends, and himself scattered around varied parts of the magical world (Mundus Magicus) with no hope but his recent comrade, Chachamaru Karakuri. In my point of view, this volume is the best of the series. Getting more full on with the action, the battles, the stress and pain that these characters are beginning to suffer, nothing could get better than this. The story gets more deep, depressing and focusing more into the lives of these characters. By far a good read for any Negima fan, or any fan of NGE, Zero's Familiar and more magical, out-of-this-world type of stuff.

As much as Negi is the lead of the series, this us largely an ensemble comedy and dividing the group, as Akamatsu does in this volume, is a detriment.

There are a couple of cute moments but nothing really special.

I can't remember much about this volume, but I think it had to do with the Ala Alba.

The adventure continues as the action ramps up in this brand new storyarc. Looks like we won't be seeing Mahora Academy for awhile...
