Rate this book
Fear has a color. It’s the gruesome glow of yellow, wielded by the totalitarian tyrant Sinestro and his Yellow Lanterns. And now the entire universe is bathed in its sinister light. The Sinestro Corps have replaced the Green Lanterns as the peacekeepers of the galaxy.

Oa, the homeworld of the Guardians and their Green Lantern Corps, is no more. In its place at the center of the universe orbits Warworld, Sinestro’s home base. The Green Lanterns have vanished, leaving no one to oppose the Sinestro Corps’ reign of terror.

No one, that is, except the last Lantern: Hal Jordan.

Convicted of crimes he didn’t commit, reduced to a being of pure thought and will, Hal must now battle back from the brink to reform the Corps and free all of creation from his archenemy’s iron fist.

Sinestro’s word is law…but Hal Jordan is the lawbreaker!

Ok, it looks like this will be the Green Lantern title that I follow from here on out. I know a lot of you guys are really enjoying the Simon and Jessica Green Lantern title, but for whatever reason those two just don't turn me on.

Anyhoo, this starts off with Hal forging a Green Lantern ring, using that freaky gauntlet that he stole, and an assload of (say it with me, people) willpower.
For those of you who haven't been following Hal the past few years, you may want to go back and read the previous volume, Reflections.
Yeah, I know this says volume 1, but you know the drill...
It doesn't explain why/how/where the GL Corps disappeared, but it will give you some explanation about Hal's new power set.

description

While Hal is scouring the galaxy to find out what happened to the Corps, John Stewart (leading what remains of the missing GL's) pops out of some sort of black hole looking thing.

description

They're all fucked up and drained, but Guy volunteers to head out into the wild blue (probably not blue) yonder and try to find out what's been happening while they were gone.
And promptly gets captured.
By Sinestro.

description

I was not only happy that Gardner got some good scenes in this, but that Sinestro is back to being a truly villainous bad guy. And since Sinestro had the Parallax entity and Hal hadn't tested the upper limits of his new supercharged persona, it made for a pretty cool showdown at the end.

description

I'm sure a lot of my friends will prefer the new Earth-based Green Lanterns, but Hal, John, and Guy just hit my sweet spot. Looking forward to following what happens next for them!

The Green Lantern Corps have disappeared somewhere, Oa has been blowed up and the Sinestro Corps rule the universe – prepare to lose IQ points, it’s Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps!

Robert Venditti used to be a great writer – really. I highly recommend the first four volumes of his XO Manowar series for Valiant which is a damn sight better than any of his Green Lantern run for DC. But since he took over from Geoff Johns, Green Lantern has never even been mediocre, let alone good! I thought maybe with Rebirth it’d somehow be an improvement but it’s actually just as bad as his New 52 run.

I gave up on his pre-Rebirth Green Lantern after a couple books so I don’t know what happened to the GLC or why Oa is “gone” (for now), etc. You’d think with a title like “Rebirth”, DC would try to make each title accessible to new readers, but nope! The line instead seems to basically be The New 52: Part 2 and, more often than not, if you haven’t been reading the previous books, you’re gonna be lost with these Rebirth Volume 1s.

The piss-awful “story” is a crap Star Wars knockoff with Sinestro as the Emperor in his Death Star (called “Warworld” here) ruling the universe, with the underdog Green Lantern Corps as the Rebel Alliance and Hal Jordan as Luke Skywalker. There’s also an element of Game of Thrones with Sinestro having his own Melisandre in the form of Lyssa, whose purpose is… sex object?

It’s the same old recycled garbage readers have seen before: one-dimensionally “good” Green Lanterns vs tediously and cartoonishly “evil” Yellow Lanterns, culminating in blandly heroic Hal v blandly villainous Sinestro for the bazillionth time. The book is page after page of green and yellow morons slinging light at each other – I don’t know who would find this compelling. These are comics for idiots! The subtitle should be, “Let’s Get Stupid!”.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps is unimaginative, boring and the farthest thing from a must-read – another Rebirth (s)hit!

This was the first Venditti GL book I kind of liked. It's the first time I've felt like he kind of gets the characters. This picks up where the previous volume of GL left off.

Hal is slowly turning into ring energy and crafts his own power ring. After 2 years, he's finally decided to go look for the corps. At the same time, the rest of the corps pops in at the edge of the universe. Their ranks have been decimated from wherever they were. Jon Stewart's now in charge and sends Guy on a scouting mission. Somehow he makes it to the center of the universe in less than 24 hours. Yeah, the GL's can apparently travel faster than light. Sinestro has taken over Warworld and placed it where Oa used to be. He's got some kind of fear machine that he can throw people into to supercharge their rings. That doesn't seem to matter once Hal shows up though because I guess he's pure willpower now and takes the whole Sinestro Corps out. It's not great, especially compared to Geoff Johns but it's the best volume Venditti's wrote so far.

Ethan Von Sciver and Rafa Sandoval provide great art. I really like how their colorists treat all the GL constructs. They have this kind of reverse negative look to them.

Received an advance copy from DC and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Just epic. The recap I did previously but my thoughts on the volume are pretty much the same and I love the way Hal just comes in and blasts the Sinestro corps and it sort of gives it a great ending for him and shows him as a true hero who will give his life to save the corps. And the art was beautiful throughout and this like one of the best GL stories easily. Also now that the corps have returned it will be interesting to see how the universe reacts to it.
______________________________________________________________________________________________

It starts off with Hal looking for GLC who are missing and so he forges his own ring the effects of which are felt throughout the cosmos and then he goes to fight yellow lanterns but is overdued by the extreme powers they have thanks to the Fear Engine and Sinestro merging with Parallax and we learn of his true motives and we see the others return, Guy on a recon mission, being captured and tortured, Hal recovery and then meeting with Soranik and then making a plan to stop Sinestro's reign of fear and the other Lanterns making a plan to rescue Guy and then we have the greatest fight ever between Hal and Sinestro, a final fight in their boss forms, with Hal maybe making the ultimate sacrifice? What will the fate of the universe be? Will the cosmos change or return back to the GLC and what of the yellow lanterns? Great volume and answers so many things. This volume was so epic and had the right beats throughout and the fight betwene Hal and Sinestro >>>> and his end wow. Made me cry but the art is freaking gorgeous.

I received this from Edelweiss and DC Comics in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, so this is the last of the Rebirth imprint graphic novels that I received from Edelweiss, and it was pretty good. The artwork was fantastic, and I guess the only reason it wasn't 5 stars is that the ending was so very obvious early on in the book.

Curious to see what direction this title takes in the future.

The Green Lanterns have disappeared from the universe, but now they're back, and they punch some Yellow Lanterns. In other words, there wasn't really anything of interest that happens in this story. It's competent but dull. As for the art, pencillers worked on this. One of them can draw faces well, and the other one not as well, so it's a bit jarring when the unattractively drawn faces show up.

If you are not currently up to date on New 52 Green Lantern, I'd strongly recommend you get up to date before tackling this volume. I was not, and my reading experience definitely suffered for it. There's been one heck of a seismic shift in the order of the universe, and I totally missed it happening. To sum up: the Sinestro Corps somehow supplanted the Green Lanterns as the galactic police force, Hal Jordan seems to have been some form of fugitive, and the other Lanterns are missing, presumed dead. That's just the shortest possible update, and it leaves a lot out. I spent a good portion of this book trying to figure out what was happening, and how we got to this state. I'm not sure how successful I was.

That said, it's not like the story isn't entertaining anyways. There's a good amount of action, and what I could follow of the story was interesting and fairly well told. I have no idea that somebody who came in totally up to date would enjoy it a lot more than I did.

If you didn't know this book was written by Robert Venditti, who wrote the past year or so of Green Lantern books, you'd think this was a different writer. Venditti really steps up his game with this new volume of Green Lantern, evoking a lot of the good stuff that Geoff Johns introduced into the series.

Focusing on Hal Jordan with one plot thread and John Stewart and the returning Green Lantern Corps in the second plot thread, the balancing act is well managed and swaps focus as needed. This series also builds on the stuff that happened over in Cullen Bunn's Sinestro book too, so it's nice to see that Rebirth hasn't thrown loads of continuity out of the window.

Hal versus Sinestro is always a wonderful set-up, and Sinestro's might hasn't been any greater than here for a long time. With the entire Sinestro Corps at his back, it's Hal versus everyone, plus Parallax, plus Sinestro's daughter Soranik plotting in the background. There's a lot going on, and it's all great. Green Lantern hasn't been this good in a long time.

The artwork is shared between Ethan Van Sciver (!!!) and Rafa Sandoval, who are both brilliant at massive crowd scenes. Van Sciver has been involved with the Green Lantern universe for so long now he likely designed half of the characters in this story, honestly.

Both this and Green Lanterns are on top form. Rebirth has given the Green Lantern line the shot in the arm that it needed to push it back to the level it enjoyed for so long under Geoff Johns.

The Green Lantern books got a bit directionless near the end of the New 52 and it seems like Venditti is using DC Rebirth as a much needed reset of the status quo. In this epic first volume of a new title, the story is a follow up to the end of Venditti’s New 52 run as well as to the Lantern Corps miniseries Green Lantern Corps: Edge of Oblivion. Hal Jordan has forged a new ring out of pure will, but he believes the Corps is all dead and decides on a suicide mission to stop the Sinesteo Corps once and for all, at the same time, the Corps has returned to the main universe and ready to announce their epic comeback.

This is a rousing story that shows what being a Green Lantern is all about and really gives each character a chance to shine. From John Stewart leading the Corps like he was born to do it, to Guy Gardner removing any doubt that he’s the Lantern with the strongest will, to Hal Jordan constantly putting the safety of the universe first, there are great character moments here! And the artwork is stunning, with Lantern newcomer Rafa Sandoval going toe-to-toe with Lantern veteran Ethan Van Sciver for amazing, epic art.

So so so good. This is the GL book I miss!

World: Rafa Sandoval's art is insane good. The sense of motion the characters the power of the rings the constructs the framing!!! Yeah he is absolutely fantastic. The world building here is also strong, building upon the New52 and moving the world and story forward it's great. REBIRTH was not a reboot so the tendrils of all the lore and story before was great. That being said there were some logic lapses in the world in terms of Parallax and where he was...I thought he was in the core of New Korugar...

Story: Action, Adventure, Heart! All the things that made a GL story great is here. The pacing is lightning fast the emotions and action brisk and in your face. This is a good popcorn summer blockbuster. This book is just fun to rear. The pieces in place were good and the ending was poetic and beautiful. No matter how many times Hal fights Sinestro it's always fucking amazing.

Characters: Emotional and heartfelt is Hal in this book as are the rest of the GL. They all have an arc and a story to tell. Guy was fantastic and also a core emotion that rung true. Sinestro was fantastic as is all the prices of his plan. I don't want to go into detail but yeah the people mattered.

A great great first arc and a return to Johns type spectacle and heart.

Onward to the next book!

This was great! I've gotten to the point where I'm a bit more well-read in the Green Lanterns universe to not think of myself as a total noob, but I still have lots to learn and understand. This was a fantastic volume with tons of action and lots of backstory on Hal Jordan and Sinestro. The main story concerns the Green Lanterns fighting the Yellow Lanterns, otherwise known as Sinestro Corps. I was missing something as this volume is based on a previous event which is mentioned a lot and I haven't read. However, it was explained enough that I got the gist of it and want to read it. I wouldn't recommend this as an intro to the Green Lanterns, but it could work for someone Lantern literate who doesn't know Hal well yet. Mostly.I recommend it to established fans. The plot is detailed, the action constant, and the art excellent.

This is definitely the stronger of the two Green Lantern titles DC's Running right now. Excellent use of Hal, Soranik, Guy John, Kilowogg, SInestro, all GL's classic characters. And a nice big space-sized storyline. Well-done.

The Green Lantern books really suffered during the past couple of years. I was doubtful I would ever be interested after Geoff Johns left the series after many years.

This new series does return some of the luster lost! Hal Jordan is front and center, creating an awesome new ring to lead the charge against Sinestro and his corps of Yellow Lanterns. The rest of the GL Corps were apparently stranded in another universe, which I had no idea about having missed the last few volumes. At any rate, Guy Gardner, John Stewart and the rest are back and carry on their own fight apart from Jordan. Sinestro's daughter Soranik Natu is also back, but on the side of the Yellow Lanterns, trying to contain her father's worst impulses.

I have to say - while the plot is fairly straightforward, it is executed very well by the artists Rafa Sandoval and Ethan Van Sciver. Van Sciver will be know to most GL fans as having done many great stories, but he has a reputation for being slow. Given that this series was twice monthly, how could he possibly contribute? He does more issues than I expected, all of them great and finely detailed realizations of Green Lantern bad-assery. Sandoval is no slouch either and draws some great issues.

I have no idea if the following volumes will be as good but this initial story was a great ride.

Took me a while to plot through this but that's down to multiple threads to follow and some gorgeous art to take in that was often well worth a second or third look.

Yeah, Sinestro has NO TIME for any of Guy Gardner's bullsh*t

Nice to see the Lantern Corps alive and well in the comics while the cinematic equivalent is basically in the same purgatory as Daredevil before the Netflix series.

Probably not the best place to start Green Lantern, the New 52 and other Green Lanterns are foundational in what is happening in Hal Jordan, regardless you can understand what is going on, and enjoy the great art. The story itself is rather simplistic and the panels are mostly fighting.

I started reading this series as single issues when it first came out, but quickly got to spending too much money at the comic shop every month and decided to go back to collecting trade paperbacks. I never had gotten back to this series when I received a Netgalley copy of volume 2. Knew I had to jump on this volume right away so I could review that 2nd volume. This book collects the Rebirth one-shot and issues #1-7 of the bi-weekly series.

Robert Venditti is the writer for all of the issues. The one-shot shows us Hal Jordan crafting a Lantern ring from his own willpower and setting out into the universe to find out what happened to the rest of the Green Lantern Corps. (I still don't know exactly what happened prior to this because I've never finished all of the New 52 GL books.) Whatever happened to the GL's left a power vacuum in the galaxy which was seized by the Sinestro Corps. Sinestro himself was on his death bed and his daughter, former GL Soranik, took control of the Sinestro Corps to show the universe that they could be a force for good. As soon as the Sinestro Corps took control over everything the Green Lanterns once patrolled, Sinestro had Warworld moved to space sector 0 where Oa once stood. Sinestro then consumed all the yellow energy from the entity Parallax and sent his minions out into the universe to rule by fear.

Some of the Sinestro Corps encounter Hal Jordan who is still seeking out the other Green Lanterns. Sinestro orders his troops to capture Hal. The subdue him, but Hal gets some help from an unexpected source. In the meantime, the Green Lantern Corps, what's left of them anyway, return to our universe from wherever they were. Only 300 something are still alive and their communications aren't working and neither are their star maps. They have no clue exactly where they are in the universe. John Stewart, who is now leader of the Corps, sends Guy Gardner out on a recon mission to see what he can find out. Guy goes missing, and John puts it to a vote to see if the Corps wants to stay put or go in search of Guy. Of course, they all decide to look after one of their own and go looking for him. The GLs run into some people that tell them Sinestro is now ruling over the entire universe and that he's where Oa used to be. They now have access to the star maps these other people have and set forth for sector 0. Hal also sets out for Warworld to end Sinestro's rule once and for all.

This isn't as great of a Green Lantern story as any of the stuff written by Geoff Johns, but I doubt any writer on any GL series will ever live up to that high standard. The story is really good though. Venditti shows he really understands all the different personalities of each of the major Lanterns. There were a few lines of dialogue that I thought could have been better, but overall I was pleased with both the spoken and the lines spoken by the characters. The writing gets 4 stars.

Ethan Van Sciver and Rafa Sandoval work together to handle all the art in the book. Van Sciver illustrates the one-shot and issues #4-5. Sandoval handles all the rest. Sandoval isn't one of my favorite DC artists, yet I'd still choose him over some of the other artist DC employs. Van Sciver always turns out some great looking art. I wish he had the larger share of the load instead of Rafa, but it's a really good looking book overall. I just wish Sandoval wouldn't frame as many scenes from a great distance as he does. That's the major complaint I have with his work. Both guys have a few nice splash pages in the book. The art gets 4 stars.

This ends up being a 4 Star overall book. It's not the best Rebirth title I've read, but it is off to a really good start. It's easily in the top half of all Rebirth titles. Anyone that likes any of the long time Green Lanterns should be reading this. For those that have never read GL before, i'd suggest going back and starting with the Geoff Johns run first. You don't have to, but you'll be missing out. If you don't want to go back and track down all those books from the last 12 years or so, this is about as good of a place to start as any.

A few years back when Geoff Johns finished his legendary run of Green Lantern I knew the void he left it wasn't going to be easy to fill for any writer, no matter how talented she or he would be.

That was the case for Robert Venditti when he took up the title.

No matter how hard he tried during his New 52 time with the book. It always felt like the shoes he was trying to fill in, were way too big. I really didn't like his story arcs. Until now.

With the Rebirth change, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps' book shows that the author has learned along the way, matching a few important details from his prior arcs, merging with elements of a few other books and merge them into one solid space-action narrative. A welcoming reading for new readers and a pleasant surprise for veteran ones. It feels new and classic at the same time; a sensation that I didn't have since Johns had the franchise control.

The Green Lantern Universe feels epic again.

It's hard to believe this is the same writer who took over after Johns left the book during the New 52. For everything that run got wrong, this first volume gets right. Now if they can only keep Ethan Van Sciver far away from here and find a good artist to rotate with Sandoval.

This is easily the best thing I've read from Venditti.

Basically Hal is the only Green Lantern around and Sinestro has taken over the galaxy with his agents of fear. However, it is mostly ran by his daughter who is trying to use the Sinestro corps for good. However, we know that won't last long, and when Sinestro gets his ultimate power back he's near unstoppable. Hal decides to go after him and then suddenly Guy, John, and all the other Lanterns also return.

This is rebirth's first volume, so the idea is to bring hope back. And Hal does that, and probably in one of his more badass moments. He uses his own Will to form his suit. And in doing so he goes head on with Sinestro in a big ass brawl that's fun to watch and exciting to see. Guy is also pretty great here, got a good few chuckles.

a 4 out of 5.

The Green Lantern books have been some of DC's best-sellers and I've been curious about them, but to someone who hasn't read them they can be a bit impenetrable. There have been so many events and so many different books with so many different Green Lanterns, it's hard to know where to start. It's as close to the X-Men as any DC book gets.

This book is actually a great jumping on point. It doesn't toss away all that's come before, but it doesn't hit you over the head with a bunch of needless continuity. It gives you enough to understand what's going on and the current state of play, which has been marked by the apparent disappearance of the Green Lantern corps and the emergence of Sinestro's Yellow Lanterns as the chief enforcers of order in the Galaxy, but unbeknownst to Sinestro Hal Jordan survived as did a small percentage of Lantern (though an amazingly high percentage of those who are familiar from other media.)

The story is a great space opera with plenty of action. Hal Jordan is an awesome man of action who has a superb story arc and a brilliant conclusion. Guy Gardener has some good moments as well. This is just an incredibly fun entry story into the Green Lantern universe. Highly recommended.
