A comedic tale of a young woman’s relationship with a magical transforming dragon maid―now with an anime adaptation!
Miss Kobayashi is your average office worker who lives a boring life alone in her small apartment―until she saves the life of a female dragon in distress. The dragon, named Tohru, has the ability to magically transform into an adorable human girl (albeit with horns and a long tail!), who will do anything to pay off her debt of gratitude, whether Miss Kobayashi likes it or not. With a very persistent and amorous dragon as a roommate, nothing comes easy, and Miss Kobayashi's normal life is about to go off the deep end!
The story of Kobayashi’s complicated relationships with multiple otherworldly dragons continues. Volume 4 consists mostly of the stories that weren’t (yet) adapted by the anime, so this was new material to me. Some chapters were extra silly and uncomfortable , others were extra emotional and heart-warming, and a new dragon character was introduced... Overall, it was a very eventful volume that wasn’t entirely to my liking, but still was an entertaining and fun read.
About this volume: A new dragon lady appears and she is Tooru's enemy. In the midst of the fights, Iruru begins to wonder why Tooru goes along so well with humans and why a specific human is so interested in dragons. When Iruru asks Kobayashi this, she responds that she likes Tooru and thinks she is cute. Iruru immediately thinks that this has to do with lust and Kobayashi corrects her saying no and that she is a woman (when Iruru confuses her gender). Iruru the, with magic, makes Kobayashi have a penis. This divided many opinions within the fandom. Some didn't care about this specific chapter, others were very angry. I honestly don't know what to think. On the one hand I think this was interesting, see Kobayashi finally looking at Tooru with other eyes and on the other hand I wonder if she, somewhere in her mind, was already attracted to Tooru but never stopped to really think about it, seen that she had always been raised in an extremely heteronormative society. Well, anyway, this chapter was funny. In addition, the new dragon lady ends up waiting Kobayashi as well and even saying she wants to marry her and have her kids lol Obviously, Tooru didn't like this. On the plus side, this was a funny and cute volume. PS: I wish the mangaka could lessen the fanservice, his drawing of the bodies of the dragon ladies is exaggerated. The size of their breasts and how it is being drawn is just weird!
Wow, so, I guess it was a fun read except for the weirdness of Iruru. 1. What are Iruru's proportions? 2. Iruru gave Kobayashi a penis and now she's attracted to the dragons she lives with? Would she not have been attracted already? 3. Wow this volume has some weirdly outdated understandings on sexuality and gender.
So yeah, big yikes on this one.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The chapter in which Iruru makes Kobayashi a man made me feel really uncomfortable because of its huge sexual content but still it was nice to actually have a evil dragon and to learn that both the Harmony and the Chaos dragons have extremist that the other dragons do not associate with.

I decided to read the Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid manga because I was curious to compare it to the two seasons of the anime—which I liked a lot despite being uncomfortable with the way Lucoa sexually harasses an elementary school student—and I was a bit surprised to find that, unlike the other anime where I've read the manga or light novel source material, that the events are fairly scrambled. Things tend to happen in fairly different orders in the anime and the manga, and some events in the anime seem to have been created for the anime, while some bits of the manga are left out of or changed in the anime. Honestly, I think I prefer the anime, but it's interesting to see the source material, too. Hopefully the movie that came out in theatres this year will come out for home viewing, too, soon.
This volume retains its comedy but also takes a more serious route, focusing a lot on Ilulu, her entry into this world, and her past and how she’s dealing with it. I vaguely remember her antics from the anime but I didn’t remember her history to be this profound. Coolkyousinnjya developed her into more than a pair of boobs (even if she does revolve into that later— though I understand now that it is in attempt to find something she wants to do while also following her nature). Awh, poor Tohru though. I’d like to see her and Kobayashi become closer. I feel like Tohru’s patience is tested beyond most human limits— it’s fortunate that she is a dragon. Perhaps we’ll get some real Tohru x Kobayashi action eventually.
Things are getting interesting. Miss Kobayashi has quite the female harem...
I'm still glad I stuck it out & kept reading this manga. At 1st I wasn't all that enthused about it, but like many other manga, it finally found it's rhythm after the 1st/2nd volume. I wonder how many other new "main" characters are going to be introduced throughout the series. Regardless, I'm enjoying this. Art, rough, yet it fits the story. Dialogue, a little over-the-top but decent overall. Characters, likeable, endearing, & adorable.
There are so many more feelings in this volume that the previous ones. Iruru arrives on the scene to cause a war between Kobayashi and Tohru as an extension of the war happening in the dragon dimension. It’s complex and another neat example of world-building.
I will warn that there is a chapter in which Kobayashi gets a magical penis (in terms of any kind of gender exploration, there is none, so if this isn’t your cup of tea, that’s your warning). The understandings of gender and sexuality feel a bit outdated, which is a bit of a damper on an otherwise interesting introduction of Iruru.
WHY? WHY? WHYWHYWHYWHYWHY?! Why is Ilulu a big boobed loli girl wearing skimpy underwear?! I don't get it. How is that appealing to anyone? I mean, I get the hot spring scene. Fan service is nothing new. But when your character looks like she's 10, it's gross.
Now that the rant is over... this series isn't half bad, not exactly good in my opinion, but not bad. I like the character dynamics between Kobayashi and all the dragons. Whether she's bribing Elma with food, being a parental figure for Kanna, or even trying to understand Ilulu, there's... just good vibes, ya know?
More of a 3.5 star rating; I found Kobayashi, Tohru, Kanna, and their friends taking a trip to the hot springs a very cute and amusing chapter. It was also very interesting to see just how quickly Elma was able to get adjusting to working with Miss Kobayashi and the odd yet good-intended competition. The introduction to Ilulu and seeing her very unique dynamic with Kobayashi, and Tohru was very amusing and interesting to see play out. I’m curious to see the minor differences in Ilulu’s journey going forward in the manga, compared to what was shown in the anime.
The art style has elevated slightly since volume 3. The author mentions the anime being produced here in volume 4. A couple of pages where nudity is featured, specifically the hot springs chapter. I love how 1-1 this is to the anime, other than nipples being shown.
I love Ilulu and can’t get enough of her character development and any scene she’s in.
It’ll be interesting too see how the author means the next volume will be more comedy than serious like this volume.
This volume introduces the mischievous Ilulu who battles Tohru and later gives Kobayashi some...ahem...new equipment. As this series continues I can't help but wonder if Kobayashi and Tohru will truly explore their relationship with each other or if it's something they heightened more in the anime. I am curious to find out and this curiosity will help me continue into the next volume.
Better than I expected. Ilulu is nowhere near my favorite character in this series however I believe her introduction was done much better here than in the anime. The combat was nicely illustrated, however the revenge scheme was a little off-putting. The fan service as usual is gross and unneeded. Elma was entertaining as usual especially now that she has her job down.
This volume is a bit different than the others. It's main arch is focused on a new character. I think now the new character has been established, the new dynamic could offer some funny and interesting scenarios in future volumes.
This instalment is perfect,it diverged away from the usual comedy and focused on iruru, a character I personally feel we need to see more of.i.hope to see her develop further
This volume was very detailed, sexually, and for my personal tastes I am waiting for it to get back to the good old fashioned family feels. It's what I originally signed up for.
This volume was……entertaining? 😬 a bit too ecchi for me. So much exposure of boobs, references of sex, and just general pervertedness. Just not what I’m really looking for with this series, so it doesn’t sit well with me.
Love this series!!! This is the first volume that has a storyline and characters not featured in the anime adaptation. After reading, I think it was a wise choice.
Aparece nueva dragona y parece que acabará siendo rival amorosa de Toru. No me hace mucha gracia que el anime pasara de ser super cuqui con toques echi al revés, pero que se le va hacer.
