Apsakamuose be proto daug neaiškių simbolių.

Hofmannsthal is not prominent in the collective literary mind at the moment. That's a shame. Time to rediscover him. Relevant today. Perhaps more than ever.

Wowsers. I would give this a 6/5 if I could. It will go down as one of my all time favorites.
It's probably not fair to compare this to other books though, because this is the libretto to one of Strauss's most complex operas. And the music is incredible.
It's the fairy tale story, about what happened after the "happily ever after". It's about becoming human. It's about the divinity, sanctity and beauty of marriage and family. It's about the struggle against evil. It's about holding on to hope. It's about putting overs before oneself. It's about patience and forgiveness. It's about all the best things, in all the best ways, with incredible prose (and if you care to listen to or watch the opera, beautiful music)!
Small spoiler:
In one of the most powerful climaxes of all, the heroine profoundly overcomes herself to save her husband and the voices of their yet-unborn children ring out "Hear, we command you. Wrestle and struggle, that our lives may gloriously dawn! The tests you have steadfastly born are made for us into shining crowns! ... Was there ever a feast, to which we, the invited, were not also the hosts?"
