Nursing a bitter hatred for Smoke Jensen, the man responsible for landing him in jail, Ralph Tinsdale manages to escape and rally a posse for the purpose of getting even, and his first act is to kidnap Jensen's wife. Original.

The story is basic. The writing is superior. This may be the best written of all of the Johnstone books I've read. The highlight are the vivid descriptions throughout the book of scenery and story.
The story is a bit complicated in how three men want to rid the world of Smoke Jensen. How they lure him out is obvious. Encounters along the way of the bad guys and sets of good guys and others enriches the story greatly.
The writing of this book and the one previous, 'Power of the Mountain Man', shows the night and day difference of using ghost writers. Due to certain underlining simple aspects of the story, I see where Johnstone, himself, set the basic story and the actual writer built way up from there.
Bottom line: I recommend this book. 9 out of ten points.
Frankly, just a bloodbath. I lost count of how many men Smoke Jensen smoked. The action was non-stop, but I never could get into it. The book has some good parts. I enjoyed Smokes meeting up with the bear. However, while many think Western readers simply read it for the blood and gore, I do not. I look for a good descriptive of what it was like. This book is not a L'Amour.
This story finds Smoke Jensen up against three hard core escaped criminals. They take over a town and kidnap Sally before Smoke can enlist friends and indians to come to his aid. Lots of action in this one.
Such great stories. Got to order the next in the series then I have ones following behind that. I'm so glad that his son is writing with him so that new ideas are coming all the time.
gotta love a good shoot-em up. I listened to the graphic audio along with reading this. I still can't get past the voice actor for Bobby sounding like the voice actor for Bobby Hill on King of the Hill.
Over the past four months I have been reading the Mountain Man series by William W. Johnstone. They are a throwback to the old west and come complete with rugged terrain, outlaws, Indians, and heroes. I enjoyed these books for the simple reason that I feel transported back to a simpler time when right was right, wrong was wrong, and there wasn't nearly so much gray. The reader gets to learn alot about what it was like for the men and women who broke open the territory but especially we get to cheer on an old fashioned hero or two. You will enjoy this trip back to the mid 1800's and you'll willingly cheer for the good guys who are interesting and funny characters, and hate the villains. Enjoy!
I've read better William Johnstone books. It barely kept my attention and then only because once I start a book, Im determined to finish it. This book had the potential to be an action packed, interesting read ... three men Smoke Jenson put in jail escape and come looking for Smoke for revenge. Smoke learns of their escape and goes after them, leaving his wife and adopted son Bobby at the family ranch. So many relationships that could have been explored more or explained with more backstory but weren't. the conclusion was boring and anti-climatic.
Very good western series. The story of Smoke Jensen, trained by the last of the mountain men as a boy. If you like men's adventure and westerns then you will enjoy the series. Recommended
