This was a dystopian book that was not very suspenseful or exciting with a mystery that ended up being rather predictable. However, I adored this book for the lovably innocent characters, their strong friendship, and their journey into a new world.
Julianna and Declan are the brightest scholars in the compound that has been their home most of their lives, closed off from the real world. Bright enough to eventually realize that the government that they were always lead to believe was gracious and generous may actually be more of a dictatorship. Eventually they decide to escape their closed environment and become fugitives in the real world.
Their grand getaway and subsequent travels were not nearly as gripping as I had expected, but I hardly noticed as I was consumed by the wonder, excitement, and happiness the characters were feeling. I felt the communication of emotion was done well by the author, and her treatment of family was heartwarming. To be honest, most of the time I had forgotten the story involved fugitives from a dictatorial regime entirely, but I found that to be a welcome change of pace and I look forward to book 2.
I definitely would classify this book as a "cozy dystopia". If you are looking for a dystopian novel with shocking twists and turns, heart pounding danger, and nerve wracking road blocks, this may not be the book for you. However, if you are looking for something a bit more on the brighter side and find pleasure in the joy and happiness of characters, this book is definitely worth reading.
