This is a strange course -- I've always found the concept of what makes something funny interesting, as I've never heard a satisfactory answer before. This course didn't answer the question either, but it did dance around the question... it attempts to be more practical, giving people tips on how to be funny. Unfortunately the examples the author gives fall flat for me, and remind me forcibly of the scene in "Pride and Prejudice" when Mr. Collins tells the Bennett girls that he often amuses himself by contriving little compliments for women in advance, yet when he delivers them, he tries to give himself as unstudied an air as possible. Elizabeth says, "Believe me, sir, no one would suspect your manners of being rehearsed." Of course analyzing a joke has the effect of killing the humor, and I wasn't expecting this book itself to be funny... but I imagine the person who might listen and take notes as someone with excessively poor social skills. Anyway, I gave up.
