But when it surfaces that Milly is a witness to her boss’ murder, she’s soon running for her life, and the only man that can help her stay alive is Rik.

Milly Evans loved her job. After eight years of working in the company, it became her family. But an unfortunate shift of power not only ripped her away from her security, but also thrown her into tailspin when she had to deal with an ugly past.

Rik Bane looked for his missing best friends for years after she suddenly disappeared. Now that he found her, he wanted to own her in every way possible. But when their past and present collided, the result could be deadly.

I love dark thrillers, but wasn't sure which direction this one would go. It wasn't dark per se, but there were elements that made it an interesting story.

His stare was brutal, violent even, if one could describe a look as violent, and the secrets he held in those eyes made me shift uneasily every time they landed on me.

On first glance Rik appeared to be a brute. But as the story progressed, he started to show other sides of his personality.

There was only Esther Dean that could have me aching with sadness one moment, and in the next, rolling around with laughter.

Like Rik, Milly was masked by a facade. Her past shaped who she was today even when she tried to hide it. It was ingrained in her and would prove to be useful.

“I became someone you wouldn’t recognise. And, while I was ashamed of that, I couldn’t stop. And I couldn’t ever let you see the girl I was without you. So I never came back, I couldn’t.”

There are a lot of characters in this book from both sides, and one of my favorite was Brandon Knox. I wish there was more of him. As for the story, it was exciting with many secrets going around. However, there were still a lot of unanswered question. And considering how this book ended, I can't see yet how it will be answered in next book.

Bane is a story of a couple with a past that laden their present with secrets and lies they need to overcome. It would appeal to readers who love exciting, action packed stories.

Milly Evans is a dedicated assistant to Geoffrey Sparrow, owner of Sparrow Towers. After eight years with Sparrow, and feeling like it is her family, she feels like her own secrets can be locked away for good. However, after she witnesses her boss’ murder, Milly’s world is turned upside down and she is forced to confront her past in order to get answer in the present.

“It’s time for the truth, Rik Bane.”

Rik Bane is the silent partner of Warne Industries and one of the new owners of Sparrow Towers. During the transition, Rik is aloof but he is also aware of various dynamics and dangers that have forced his hand. As he takes the lead, he is fully aware of Milly’s expected reaction to meeting him but it doesn’t prevent what’s already been set in motion.

“I searched the fucking earth for you. You were my best friend, and you just upped and fucking left.”

As Milly’s new life is shattered, she must embrace her new knowledge and work with Rik to protect herself and those she still trusts. While Rik is under the impression he is fully in the know, he learns that he’s met his match professionally and romantically.

“Come for me babe. I want to see how fucking stunning you look when you come for me. You have no idea how many times I’ve pictured you coming for me, and on me.”

What ensues in Bane is action packed with a multi-layered plot involving greed and an underground spy network. At first, I thought this story was going to take a different direction but when it turned into a web of deceit and avarice, my interest intensified.

Milly is a character that battled nature versus nurture and I liked how the two sides were at war from within. Learning how to merge these opposites was intriguing to read and I admired her tenacity to protect those she loved. With Rik, I liked him immediately and understood how deep the connection ran between him and Milly. Of course, Rik had that sexy and effortless swagger that makes women swoon but there is more to him that just being a hot piece.

D.H. Sidebottom shows her range of writing in Bane, as it isn’t dark erotica but covers dark elements of the human psyche. The plot is loaded with twists and turns that kept me intrigued and in a constant search for all the answers. I also appreciated the funny moments between the main characters. Adding to Milly and Rik were a secondary cast of characters that enriched the plot and supported the complex story line. Though, there are still some parts that I wanted to be resolved, the narrative was entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

For those seeking a book with suspense, action and a second chance at romance, I highly recommend!

"How fucked up were we all? My family was fucking insane, every single one of us."

Milly Evans; finally found a job she loved and a person who cared for her. Her past comes crashing back and it destroyed all of the happiness she had accomplished.

"The darkness reflected back at me seized my breath, the blaze in his stare evaporating the oxygen and causing me to suck in a gasp."

Rik Bane best friend disappeared when they were twelve or so. Now he is older, wiser, and smarter he would not give up on looking for her until he finds her.

“I searched the fucking earth for you. You were my best friend, and you just upped and fucking left.”

When Rik and Milly meet the intensity of their relationship was static. I loved the mysterious ways of Rik and his security aroma. Everything about him speaks power. Milly couldn't stand that they have grown up to be so different but so much alike as well.

This book was nothing what I expected and yet I enjoyed it because I liked the dark elements in the book and really liked Rik and Milly. The protectiveness of Rik and the badass attitude of Milly drew me into this story. There was so much craziness on this book though I felt like I couldn't keep up. I did found myself really confused at times. I couldn't seem to understand some side characters or why they were even in the book haha. At the end I thought perhaps I missed some of the answers and found myself with more questions. I hope that the next book will provide more answers to my questions and that the madness will continue.

Readers who enjoy dark suspense books and are not afraid to venture on this genre will really enjoy this book.

"I couldn’t promise her that I wouldn’t hurt her, because I knew deep down inside me that I would hurt her, no matter how hard I tried not to. It was me. Hurt and pain bled from me freer than blood. I breathed heartache easier than the air that filled my lungs. Yet, I couldn’t stop loving her. That came even easier than bleeding and breathing. It was engrained in me, like a natural instinct."

Bane is a Romance Thriller and in dual-POV. The story was well-paced and well-written. It was really breathtaking and full of surprise. I personally didn’t know who to trust!

Esther and Rik knew each other from childhood but Esther disappeared under mysterious circumstances and Rik hunted for her. After several years Rik finds her but she has some issues. So the only person who can save her is Rik.

At first, when I start reading it I was so confused and when I got to the middle of the book I understood what was happening. One of my favorite characters in this book was Knox and I hope in the future he will have his own story and I will read it definitely.

Bane is the first book in the Memphis series by D.H. Sidebottom. As much as I wanted to love this story, I felt myself struggling to connect.

The author came up with a hell of a plot. So good that I think she forgot to develop the characters. So while the plot and mystery surrounding them was very suspenseful and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat with its ups and downs, the connection with the characters was missing. There was no introduction, nor development; to the point where I wasn't sure if this was the first book or not. The characters were already engaged and the only one who seemed not to have an idea about their life was me. So as much as I loved Bane and Esther/Millie, there was just not enough bits and pieces of their past to satisfy little me.

So sad. The potential was thereeeeee. Damn it!

Bottom line, Bane was just an ok book for me. Here's hoping the author gives me more character development in the next book.

Ok one thing really bothered me, did he sleep with Caroline after meeting heroine? Someone told heroine they saw Caroline with her legs wrapped around the hero but it was never really confirmed or denied. I can't rate this book until I know....so frustrating!

My feelings are so conflicted regarding this book. I am not sure how I feel about Esther/Millie as a character, as an assassin for the "family", as the love of Bane's life, and ultimately his wife.

In my humble opinion the story reads like its continued from another story. The characters are already engaged so there is no development or introduction of characters. For this reason it's hard to connect. Esther/Millie has made her "rounds" with the guys in her circle and because she seemed soooooo uh engaged, it's hard to believe in her relationship with Bane. Bane has had his fair share of women also. One of his former lovers is on the team he commands. So yeah Esther is in contact with Bane's former lover because of circumstances outlined in the story.

If I overlook the above, Bane is a decent story. The plot and mystery surrounding Esther's family is very suspenseful. The stalker angle is very well written. Esther and Banes HEA are soooo sweet! I think their HEA made the story. Totally! For the plot, stalker, and HEA, I think the story's rating is 4 stars.

D H Sidebottom stuns me everytime with her writing.
It's so flawless and smooth that you literally sink into the words and soak them all up.
Till you live and breathe the words in front of you.
Till you realise you haven't moved a muscle in over an hour, your tea has long gone cold and your stomach is rivalling whale noises.

Bane was everything.
Esther was life.
This whole book.
I don't even have the words.
I don't think there is enough words to describe this book.
Good isn't enough and neither is any other word.
They haven't even created a word to describe this book yet. But when they do, it still wouldn't be enough.

Esther, she's bloody kickar*e!
She's strong, she's fiesty, she's bloody everything you want in a female lead.
She's a little crazy but hey, who doesn't love crazy?!
But she's also very sweet when she wants to be.
Her head is firmly on her shoulders and she knows what she wants.

Bane, oh god. Rik F'ing Bane.
He was just the best.
One of the best Hero's that Dawn has even written.
The first time you meet him he literally will knock your socks off.
He will blow every expectation out the water and laugh while he does.

So as you can see i bloody enjoyed this book and if you haven't got it yet or you don't know whether you should then you most definitely should get your butt on Amazon and buy the hell of this book.
Click like your life depended on it.

D H Sidebottom you are a bloody legend!

This book has it all.
By that, I mean it thrusts you through all sorts of emotions. You'll feel that adrenaline rush that makes you want to pump your fist in victory, a snigger that bubbles in your throat and sorrow which makes you feel like the world has imploded.
This story has so many twists and turns but through it all, you can depend on a strong female lead. The female lead in books is something I struggle with - I'm easily irritated by a simpering, whining woman - but DH Sidebottom has a knack for writing a strong, self-sufficient woman who still craves the protection of a dominant, alpha male.
Bane starts off with a bang and I immediately knew something was amiss. This theme of unease is carried through the book, keeping you on the edge of your seat.
Knox intrigues me but I'm hoping he doesn't end up with that horrid woman. Who knows what'll happen in the next book but I'll be waiting with bated to breath to discover where this fabulous author takes us next.

Reviewing on behalf of Relentless Book Chics Ramblings and Reviews

This story isn’t what I was expecting, it shocked me.

Milly loves her job as a PA to Geoffrey Sparrow, the CEO of Sparrow Towers where she’s worked for 8 years. Her childhood wasn’t great and as she’s estranged from her own father, the relationship she has with Geoffrey means the world to her, they have a mutual love for his company, respect for each other and he gives her the affection she missed out on growing up.

One night after a bad break up, Milly returns to her office where she finds Geoffrey working late. They hear a gunshot so Milly arms herself and goes to investigate but to her horror, another shot rings out and by the time she returns to his office, Geoffrey has been murdered.

The #1 suspect in her mind is the CEO of Warne industries, Brandon Knox who has been trying to buy Sparrow Towers for months but Geoffrey always refused. Now he’s no longer an obstacle, Warne swoop in and takeover everything, including Milly’s life.

Just as she thinks her career is over, Millie is informed that she’ll be one of the few current members of staff to keep her job but that comes at a price, the life she left behind and the life she leads now collide in the worst way when someone from her past is revealed as the other CEO of Warne industries, Rik Bane her childhood best friend.

This is one of those stories that you should go into blind so it doesn’t spoil the many twists and revelations so all I’ll say is Rik Bane is the definition of an alpha male and the journey the characters go on is dark, thrilling and filled with suspense. This book definitely has the shock factor and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys their romance with some thrills and lots of suspense.

Esther's childhood is changed the day her mother came and hurried her from her childhood friend Rik. From then on Esther's life has been nothing hidden truths, death and lies. It seems that everyone that she loves is taken away from her.

Rik Bane, what can I say but he is one Alpha male and with so many secrets and even he is surprised when he is trust back into life with Esther. Can he trust her or more importantly will he trust her only time will tell.

The story is told from dual POV and with many twists you just never know what is going to happen next.

I really enjoyed the storyline but I found the the last few chapters were a bit rushed and that every deplorable thing that could happen to Rik and Esther were crammed into it. I would have liked a bit more 'juicy' descriptions into said acts (this is only my opinion). In saying that I still really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone. Well done D. H Sidebottom. So looking forward to the next instalment to this series.

Another to add to the bestseller list for sure. From the very beginning I was in, hook line and sunk, completely engrossed.

With a awesome badass female lead with a heart of gold to her hot alpha partner in everything, Esther can do no wrong. The chemistry between her and Rik was hot. Bane definitely packs more than a few punches along side his crew of hot kicking badass guys. Can't wait to hear more about Knox, super hot with his sexy one liners and his messy man-bun.

Loved hearing a few old favourite characters from other books getting a mention too, I always get excited when the characters cross over into other stories. That's without waiting for the ever present Frank. Frank, whether he's a good guy or bad, I always chuckle when Frank shows his face.

I had a few jaw dropping moments with twists I certainly didn't see coming either.

The beginning to another fan freaking tastic series. Get writing please Ms S, I need more Memphis.

You think you know what D H Sidebottom brings to her stories well for me I couldn’t be more of a fan right now 😂 even though I don’t do a lot of dark reads but sometimes they help cause it brings out the book funks that I’ve been in.

Bane I pictured so differently when I read the blurb and even the storyline was not what I expected. Yes, I love action so I won’t be too bored but with Rik and Esther prepare for the twists and the turns and the OMG to huh huh what’s happening now yes you’ll truly be flipping the pages faster.

I know I rated it 4 stars for me personally I did become a little confused of where the story was heading and then middle of it to ending felt too rushed but I’m curious about Book 2.

Omg, omg, this is such a brilliant read! It was so good I didn't want it to end!

I loved how this book started out from when the characters first met and worked up to the present day. Milly and Bane have been best friends since they were children, then one day Milly’s family up and moves for no apparent reason leaving Bane devastated. The story picks up fourteen years later when Bane takes over the company where Milly works and things start to make sense and fall into place.

Milly made my heart break in the life she was put through and I really wanted her to have a HEA but can she have that with bad boy Bane with all the baggage that goes with him and of course the secret she hides too.

I love Dawn’s books so much. She really gets inside her characters’ minds which as a reader I find I do too which shows the work of a brilliant author.

This is a must read book. All the angst makes it an amazing read. Let's hope there's a book 2 real soon because I need it!

'Where did you go Little Legs?'(Rik)

I was privileged to receive an ARC of this and,as I had no doubt it would be,it was AMAZEBALLS!
Right from the Prologue,I was hooked! Move on 14 years, Milly(Ester) as the blurb tells enough- told in DUAL POV'S... along the way there are twists and turns, secrets and lies, head turning revelations leading to OMG moments, character's that seasoned D H Sidebottom fans will love, along with the HOT scenes with Rik and Ester(Milly) and an Epilogue that at the end had me smiling, and added anticipation for what's next to come in this series.
I really haven't gone into much more detail,as I feel it would spoil it.I'd say just read it for yourself!

There is just something about Dawn’s books that instantly has me thinking “what the hell is going on” and i have to say that this is where i found myself a few chapters into Bane. Dawn has a style all of her own, i am confused one minute and then all of a sudden it all clicks, falls into place - that light bulb moment where i find myself going “aaahhhhhh right, now i get it”. This book had a few of those moments for me, it kept me guessing and just when i thought i’d figured it all out .... yeah not so much.

This book had a lot of characters and there was certainly a lot going on. Millie/Esther is one tough little cookie. Growing up her childhood best friend was Rik Bane, they shared a special bond which was torn apart when one day her and her family just upped and left, leaving everything behind. 14 years later and Esther is now Millie and working as an assistant to Geoffrey Sparrow when tragedy strikes and brings Rik crashing back into her life

We start to find out about their lives whilst they have been apart. Who Esther became, why the family had to disappear and how and why she became Millie. Rik has changed a lot as well, he’s cold and angry especially towards Esther but the attraction is electric, intense and it is something that neither can ignore.

This book was certainly fast paced and full of mystery. Is this as dark as Dawn’s previous books? In my opinion, no it isn’t. Did it kick me in the gut and have me struggling to catching my breath? Not as much as some of her previous books. But did i love it? Hell yes i did!!!

I loved it, before I knew it I had finished it. The plot hooked me, hired assassins, a secret government agency hunting them, a strong h and a dominant H with tender side... So many surprises and unexpected twists...

❤️ Esther, aka Ghost, so badass, so strong, so deadly and so caring and loving person too.

“Sinking a knife into someone’s chest and hacking at their heart turns me the fuck on. Watching the life drain from their eyes makes me wet and horny. And then I fuck. Hard, fast and covered in the blood of whoever gave me their last breath.”

And Bane, oh God.... he can command me whatever he wants.

“Don’t ever tell me I can’t kiss what is mine, what has always been mine. You haven’t ever wondered what our first kiss would be like, Esther? How perfect it would be? Because it was perfect, fucking perfect. You were made for me, little legs. All of you.”

“You might be the love of my life, but I’m also your boss. So, even though I’m your boss I’m not allowed to give you orders – unless I’m fucking you.”

“You’re Esther Dean, soon to be Esther Bane. You kickass, despite your little legs.”“Esther Bane?”“Did I forget to tell you that we’re getting married next week?”My heart skipped a beat and my eyes widened. “What? Next week!” He tutted and rolled his eyes but his smile was mischievous and wide. “Oops. Seems I did forget to tell you.”

❤️the Memphis series and I hope read soon about Knox.
Also appears as a member of the team Grace Hamilton ( Kade’s wife, characters of my favorite series NSC industries).

*I voluntarily reviewed an ARC for this book*

Rik and Esther were childhood best friends until one day Esther suddenly disappeared with her family. Fourteen years later Esther is not who she used to be. Going by another name, Milly, she's a secretary for a company that specializes in government contacts. Suddenly her boss is killed and the company taken over by someone else who wants to keep her on staff. If that isn't bad, someone is out to get rid of Esther. Rik spent fourteen years looking for Esther and when he finally found her he realised nothing had changed. He is not the same boy that Esther remembered, there's a hard edge to him. As the two start to learn the truth about each other pasts, secrets and betrayals are revealed. Can they survive the lies and deceit? Or will that be their downfall?

I loved this book. There were twists and turns I did not expect. DH Sidebottom does not disappoint. I could not put this book down. I would recommend this book to anyone. I am looking forward to reading more of her work.

Enjoyable Read.

This was a good read full of twists and turns so you can never really tell just who you can trust.
Rik and Milly were childhood friends very close until one day Milly is ripped away from Rik without any explanation.

Years later they meet again after a tragedy at Millys work.
Little does she know but Rik is a part of the new firm taking over from her old company.

There's a lot of explaining to do on both sides when they set eyes on each other but one things for sure there's definitely something between these two.

When secrets are revealed will they be able to trust each other to work together.

I loved the chemistry between Rik and Milly. She's not the quiet little innocent girl who he knew all those years ago.
As for Rik he's definitely not the boy he used to be but he still makes Millys heart skip a beat.

Give this one a go, it'll certainly keep you on your toes.

Loved it!

What a great story. Relatable characters facing the odds. The ending was great. Jam packed with action and an excellent HEA.
