Top Notch Thriller

Blood Sport was my first suspense novel by Judith E. French. I've read many of her romance novels. This book was quite a departure from her work in the romance genre, but she pulled it off as adeptly as a master criminal in a caper flick movie.

(Although I bought the Kindle edition of this book, it doesn't designate that when I go to the book page so I don't know what's up with that.)

About The Book

The story of serial killer hunter Jillian Maxwell is filled with taut suspense and peopled with well-drawn characters. It's creepy and spooky and will make you wish you weren't reading it at night, alone, in a darkened room. It's all about the human monsters that we suspect travel the highways and byways of life. As you read, you keep rooting for the victims, hoping some hero rides to their rescue.

If you've ever watched any of the documentaries about serial killers, you'll recognize that Ms. French did her research. If you're addicted to the ID cable channel, you'll realize the story about these evil killers is spot on.

Yes, But...

There are only a couple of instances in which I think Agent Maxwell acted against her characterization, but I'll leave that for you to judge. All in all, this is a top notch thriller that should please any fan of the genre. The sub-plot of a blossoming romance is believable and doesn't detract from the suspense at all.

This book has been out a while, but it has only 1 review in which it was panned for format errors. That was the fault of the publisher who put the book up, not the author. I didn't encounter the same errors the previous reviewer noted, so I suspect that the publisher had someone try to correct the errors. The errors that were present in the Kindle edition I read did not prevent me from enjoying the book. Don't let it deter you either because the book is well-done.

Bottom Line

Read Blood Sport by Judith E. French, and you'll be hooked by the author's skillful plotting and characterization.

I liked it a lot, which surprised me because I remember not liking a different book by the same author all that much. Nicely suspenseful. Not too terribly cliche. Characters weren't super annoying although the heroine came awfully close. It was a little more graphic and violent than your typical romantic suspense novel. The "twist" at the end wasn't very "twisty." I had it figured out fairly early on. There were too many characters I thought. I had trouble keeping track of them at first. The ending seemed kinda cliffhanger-y or at least it seemed to me to be setting up for a sequel, but near as I can tell the author hasn't written anything since then (this was written in 2008). Not sure if she quit the writing business or maybe she passed away. Her website hasn't been updated since 2008, so I'm not sure.

The formatting on my kindle was terrible. I'm not counting off a star for that but it did detract from my reading experience. Words were separated by syllable (ex. - in de pen dent or des pondent (I think that was the word), which I thought at first was a fancy French phrase that I'd never heard of. Haha!) Paragraphs between scene changes weren't split apart, making it a bit confusing to be reading about different characters or a different day without a clue that things had changed.

I liked the twists in this one even though I saw them coming. The author did think up some truly icky things for her antagonist characters to perpetrate on others. A good read for those who enjoy police procedurals.

If you enjoy the TV series Criminal Minds or CSI, this book is very much like them.
