Rate this book
Sheet cakes and slab pies have long been a staple at holidays, family reunions, and potlucks everywhere. Now authors Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough are reinventing these American originals with their new book All-Time Favorite Sheet Cakes & Slab Pies. And why not? Slab pies are the perfect flavor trifecta of flaky crust, jammy filling, and crumbly topping, while sheet cakes ensure that every bite of cake has a thick layer of frosting--satisfying even the most voracious sweet-tooth. Best of all, these delightful sweets are simple to make and can serve a crowd with ease.

Whether you're looking for a timeless classic like Blueberry Buckle or craving something simply indulgent like the Bacon-Peanut Butter Cake with Maple Buttercream, with over 100 recipes inside you'll find the perfect dessert for every occasion. In addition to the cakes and pies there are also recipes for cheesecakes, Danish, coffee cakes, and more. With some simple ingredients and a trusty sheet pan, you'll soon be whipping up scrumptious pies and cakes--all of them easy to make, fun to serve, and wonderful to eat.

Who isn't a fan of sheet cakes? Simple to make and serve and everyone gets a good ratio of cake and frosting. I myself make a mean Rum Cake Sheetcake. As I was looking in my library I saw this and quickly grabbed it. Slab pies? What is this?

Well it's genius! Instead of having to make 3 pies for Thanksgiving, I made one slab pie and it was a huge hit. I doubt if I will ever make pie any other way after discovering these scrumptious recipes!

Bacon-Peanut Butter Cake with Maple Buttercream. Imagine those flavors! And there is more! 100 recipes of sheetcake, slab pies, cheesecakes, coffee cakes and even gluten-free goodies!  The Blueberry Buckle that I made with wild Maine blueberries was to die for! Warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, heaven on a plate.

This is one I will definitely be buying for myself!

Love the idea of sheet cakes & slab pies but was not a fan of all the butter AND shortening in these recipes. Butter, ok, but no to shortening. The only recipes I’ll be trying is the Scottish Oat Cake with Sour Cream Frosting, which has “only” a stick of butter in the cake & none in the frosting.

Some interesting combos with very creative crumb toppings, but -in general- the amount of butter involved in each recipe was too much for our dietary restrictions.

This would be a GREAT resource for someone who regularly bakes for large groups, potlucks, or big parties. Lots of yummy sounding flavor combos to try.
