Big Dog and Little Dog

Big Dog and Little Dog Making a Mistake/Perrazo y Perrito se equivocan: Bilingual English-Spanish (My First I Can Read)

Rate this book
Big Dog and Little Dog are at it again in this Spanish/English bilingual early reader. That black and white critter looks like a kitty, but it sure doesn't smell like a kitty!   With deceptively simple text, graphic illustrations, and tongue-in-cheek humor, Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey brings the joys of childhood friendships to life through his tales of two lovable dog pals. This Green Light Reader will help young children build basic reading skills in both Spanish and English (which are clearly set in different colors), while also tickling their funny bone. Bonus skill-building activity section at the back of the book.

In this educational tale, Big Dog and Little Dog flunk at "Skunk Spotting."

No, a skunk is not a little kitty.

For readers: Big pictures and few words can make for a feeling of accomplishment. As in, "I read this whole book."

MAKES ME WONDER

Goodreader, have you heard of grade inflation?

This Level 1 reader, for kids aged 4-7, might count as an example of book inflation.

FIVE STARS, even though this alleged book doesn't have enough words to fill a normal, single-spaced sheet of 11 by 8 1/2 inches.

Five years ago, we would have said that this book didn't support new readers because while the word on the page is "kitty," the picture shows a skunk. (That's the mistake!) But now that there's more interest in kids decoding and not relying on the picture, it's a good challenge. It's also a great story for toddlers (mine learned to hiss!) and my preteens thought it was HILARIOUS.

My son just read this book aloud to his kindergarten class. We loved the story and its humor while still being easy for him to master independently. We look forward to reading the others in this little series.

Oh no! They crashed the party! My only complaint is that I wish the book had clarified that it was a skunk. Easy enough for the parent to do, but would have been nice for the child to see it in writing.

This was a short board book. It was fine, and would probably be a big hit with a toddler if told right. For me it was just ehh. Some cute doggies mistake a cat for a skunk and a putrid smell is to be had by all.

Big Dog and Little Dog go for a walk and something unpleasant happens. The drawings are simple and help readers to understand the text. I really like the extra facts, worksheets and games at the back of the book. I give it 4 out of 5 stars for the extra activities to extend the learning of beginning readers.

Perrazo y Perrito van a pasear y sucede algo desagradable.

What an adorable brightly illustrated book about a big and little dog discovering what that animal is... At the end of the book it has a learning comprehension section in both English and Spanish! Perfect for students in dual language schools.

Cute story! I love this series because of the activity pages at the end (and because I love dogs). Perfect for a beginner reader.

My grand loves skunks - she thought this book was hilarious. And she was eager to retell it as soon as we finished. The activities in the back of the book were also a big hit.

I wish we’d discovered these earlier, because they are quite funny in a way most board books aren’t.

Oh brother. I think I can appreciate this abstractly, but I'm not the target audience and cannot giggle.

Cute story, we enjoyed and will probably read the whole series. End of kindergarten level (0.8) so we will probably reread once in pre-k. Just not a favorite yet or one we plan to buy.

This is a current favorite with my 17-month-old. It's the second Big Dog, Little Dog book we've read, and she really likes them both. The stories are very simple. There's a lot of repetition in the words, and it doesn't rhyme. Basically there's a big dog and a little dog who are friends and they do stuff together. In this book they encounter a skunk. Chaos ensues. Even without understanding what a skunk is, my daughter delights in this book. It's not my favorite to read aloud, so I probably would resist buying a copy. Checking it out from the library is perfect, because we can return it when I can't bear to read it one more time.
Clearly a hit with the intended audience, if not mom.

Two little dogs love to go for a walk. On this adventure, they come across another animal that is fuzzy with black and white stripes and find themselves in an unusually smelly situation.

Big Dog and Little Dog are a part of the Green Light Readers series that introduces new readers to word scrambles and putting missing words into sentences. They can be engaged with the adventures of the dogs in the story. These simple sentences and colorful illustrations make this cute basic read and fun learning tool.

Big Dog and Little Dog are having a great walk until they meet a black and white animal they think is a kitty.

The best part of this story is the grand finale when the two skunky dogs arrive home in the middle of a party. This edition of the book had story sequencing and word games after the story as well some fun facts about real super dogs. A good book for beginning readers who like humorous animal tales.

Salo thought this book was great. I animated the voices for Big Dog and Little Dog so this may have generated the extra interest. The book is perfect size for toddlers to hold and turn pages. We read this one twice. Update: still reading this book and it still makes me laugh

Another great choice for the earliest readers-full of repetition and sight words. Nice bonus pages at the end to practice story sequencing, matching, and more.

Note: This book is for a first grade reader.

This is a cute little book aimed at the reading abilities of a first grade reader. The illustrations are appealing, and there is just enough humor to keep a child engaged.

Even better, there are a few pages at the end of the book based on word puzzles from the story, which my little reader ate up.

I recommend this book and I'm going to hunt down more from the series. If you want to skip the exercises, this would make a good go-to-sleep book.
