Interesting, and I liked the layout. More importantly I liked that it reminded me that history is long, and one day, hundreds of years of our civilization will be reduced to a couple of pages in a book like this.

This book, which I read and made notes from cover to cover is probably a tween reference book (I got it from the Kids section of a bookstore). I am partial to personably written history; therefore I read history for children often. I gave this book 3 stars because I felt it could have given more nuggets of lesser known facts. I feel like even teens need memorable information. I probably found about 3 chunks of poignant/ interesting information for each major section-- not good. I did enjoy that a good timeline was consistently expressed as well as current rulers; however.

Only 3 stars from a weirdo that reads history for children, though I do feel it is enlightening for youth, and it didn't contain any sordid parts of history for them.

Excellent resource to accompany Classical Conversations. My 5 year old daughter enjoys learning more about history and looking at these pictures. A book I can see myself using many times.

Love the use of maps and timelines to reinforce the big picture. I decided to buy this excellent reference book after viewing a library copy. I love how this resource lays out the geography, culture, and history of the ancient world with well organized artifacts and illustrations. Offers explanations of cultural developments from the first villages established post hunter gathering nomadic cultures to the whys for big cities, religions, specialized jobs, and the development of the need for levels of leadership.

Fascinating book with great pictures. Did you know there was a city in Turkey that had no streets, and you had to take a ladder and walk around on the roofs to get around? Cool.
