Life is always sweet in Allie McMurphy’s delectable fudge shop. But murder can make things unpleasantly sticky . . .
A DEADLY CONFECTION
After Allie inherited her family’s McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop, cousin Tori moved off to California in a bitter huff, and the two haven’t spoken since. So to have her cousin reappear on Mackinac Island without warning is a big surprise—but not as surprising as finding her standing over a dead woman impaled with a garden spade in the Mackinac Butterfly House. Butterflies may be free, but Tori won’t be for much longer—unless the cousins can bury the hatchet and work together to catch a killer who’s taken flight. Because when it comes to family, blood is thicker than fudge . . .
I must say I really had a hard time getting into this one. The animosity between Tori and Allie was so off-putting for me, the rift seemed overdone. I felt like Tori was just whiny and negative to Allie for no reason. This is my first read in this series so maybe there is some backstory I am missing?
After I got further into the story I realized that it was refreshing to have a character that wasn't perfect and nice all the time. Yeah, she got on my nerves ( and I'm only reading about her!) but I realize that diverse characters make for a more interesting read. Once I stopped letting her distract me and focused more on the mystery itself, the reading was much easier.
I enjoyed the mystery with its unique island setting, cute pets, and fudge recipes. I look forward to the next installment to see not only what mystery falls into Allie's lap, but also what happens in her personal relationships.
I have never been to Mackinac Island, it is a place on my travel bucket list. As soon as I finished this book I Googled Mackinac Island Butterfly House. It sounds like a delightful place to visit and a perfect place for a fictional murder. That’s were Allie finds her cousin Tori with her hand on a garden spade stuck into the chest of a woman. Allie has not seen Tori in years and was not expecting her to come to the island. Tori was not happy when Allie inherited the McMurphy but Allie knows she isn’t a killer. It will take more than fudge to bring these girls together but they are going to have to put their feud aside and work together to find the real killer or Tori will be saying more than “Oh Fudge!”
Each and every character in this story just shines. From the staff at McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop to those at Gossip Central, I mean the Senior Center, they all have a part to play in clearing Tori’s name and catching the real killer. At the same time plans are underway for Frances and Mr. Devaney’s wedding. Allie’s romance has hit a rough patch but it may be time to shake things up a bit.
There is always something happening and the main plots and subplots are blended so nicely. The author’s descriptive writing style takes us right into the action. Over the course of this series I have the island so clearly pictured in my mind, if I do ever get there for a visit it will be strange for these characters not to be there. 🙂
The other thing the author describes well is how the fudge is made and she has included recipes in the book too. My problem is that I want fudge and lots of it while reading the story so I need to plan ahead much better by sneaking a peek at the recipes first or stock up on fudge from a closer outlet.
Nancy Coco has created wonderful characters encased in a puzzling mystery all set in a perfect place to escape. A yummy story all the way around.
I'm always enthused when a new addition to the Candy-Coated Mystery series releases. Allie McMurphy, owner of the historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop, is visiting the Mackinac Island Butterfly House greenhouse with her furry sidekick, Mal, when she finds her cousin, Tori, hovering over a dead female body and clutching the handle of the bloody murder weapon. Tori already has a chip on her shoulder because she didn't inherit part of the hotel from their Papa Liam, and now she's Officer Rex Manning's top murder suspect. Tori denies the accusation and she and Allie begin separately sleuthing for evidence of the real culprit.
Author Nancy Coco hatches an appealing mystery full of suspicious incidents and a rash of colorful murderers-could-be. I love butterflies, and the Mackinac Island Butterfly House would be a place I could spend hours. As always, I had a great time re-visiting characters such as Jenn--Allie's smart and vivacious best friend; Frances--the hotel manager who's like family to Allie; and the handsome men vying for Allie's attention--Trent and Rex. The mystery wraps up nicely, and I hope more stories in this series are flitting around in the author's imagination!
An added bonus is yummy fudge recipes provided at the end of each chapter.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy from NetGalley.
Another sweet confection of mystery and murder from author Nancy Coco.
When I first heard about the Candy-Coated Mystery series, I was excited for two reasons. 1) I have had a long love affair with Mackinac Island since the first time I saw the movie Somewhere In Time. I’m going to get there one day. 2) Fudge. I mean, come on . . . FUDGE!
In book six of this tasty series, author Coco has outdone herself. Books one through five were all wonderful, but I simply couldn’t stop reading OH, FUDGE! for even a second. She had me locked in with the first five words . . . The Mackinac Island Butterfly House. Coco brought it so to life, I honestly felt the butterflies flitting past me.
I loved being back at the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop with Allie, and the entire cast of characters. It’s always like getting together with old friends. You know, if one of your old friends is always involved in murder. ;-) Other than that, it’s like paradise!
Of course, I can’t forget to mention the mystery. Or should I say mysteries? Hmmm . . . What I can say is, from the first chapter on, OH, FUDGE! had nothing but excitement, mayhem, laughter, confusion, and repeat, do it again, and more! The author really had me running in circles trying to figure this one out. I was quite breathless by the end of the story. Take all of the above, and add in the fudge recipes sprinkled throughout the book, and you have a perfect cozy mystery. Seriously, you will need to set aside a day to read OH, FUDGE!, because you’re going to have as hard a time as I did putting it down!
This is the fifth book in the candy coated series. Allie McMurphy runs the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge shop on Mackinac Island. Allie goes to meet with Blake, the owner of the Butterfly House, and comes across her cousin, Victoria (Tori), leaning over a dead body holding a gardening trowel. Allie was unaware that Tori was on the island. Naturally the police have to investigate Tori even though they don't think she killed the victim. Allie wants to help clear Tori's name while Tori wants nothing to do with Allie, because she is made that Allie inherited the McMurphy and not her. Both cousins search for the truth separately proving they have more in common than they would like to think.
I thouroughly enjoy revisited these characters. Jenn is a great friend to Allie and I love how the staff at the McMurphy is like a small family. Frances and Mr. Devaney are such a cute couple. I don't know how I feel about Allie's boyfriend in this book. He did a few things that I was a little annoyed with and I get Allie reacting the way she did. Hopefully things will be better on that front in the next book. The mystery itself was good. It kept me guessing right until the end. There were many twists in the plot that I liked. I will defeintely be waiting to read the next on.
I received this book from netgalley in exchange for review.
Oh, Fudge is the fifth book in the A Candy Coated Mystery series.
Monday morning begins with two shocks for Allie McMurphy. Allie was to meet with Blake Gilmore at the Butterfly House to discuss arrangements for a tour of Butterfly House, but what she sees instead is he estranged cousin, Tori, holding the handle of a garden trowel still firmly embedded in the lifeless body of Barbara Smart. Tori’s story is that she was to meet Smart to go over plans for a fundraiser and when she arrived she found Smart and was about to remove the trowel and perform CPR, she claims.
The story behind the estrangement, which Allie didn’t know, was that Tori felt their grandfather should have left the hotel and fudge shop to both of them, Even with Tori’s major attitude about this, Allie still feels that blood is thicker than water and wants to work with Tori to prove her innocence.
Allie soon learns that Smart had a propensity for having affairs with men whether they were single or not and begins to think that maybe an affair had gone wrong. Then when Blake’s home is robbed and a workshop area at the butterfly house is ransacked, that puts a new angle on the investigation. Then when Tori goes missing, and evidence shows she probably didn’t leave on her own accord, Allie needs to put all her efforts into finding the true killer.
Another fun visit to the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop and the residents of Mackinac Island. Allie’s manager, Francis, and Mr. Devaney agree to put off the wedding until the killer can be found. As always, Jenn, Allie’s friend and event planner at the hotel is there to also help Allie. Also, there is Trent, who has been dating Allie and Rex, the police chief, who is also starting to show some interest in Allie and not only for her sleuthing skills.
I love this series and will definitely be watching for the next book.
Delicious fudge recipes are also included in the book.
Oh, Fudge, is the sixth book in the fantastic series by Nancy Coco. I love this series and this book is my favorite so far. Allie is shocked when she finds out her cousin Tori is furious with her. When she inherited the grand hotel, she had no idea her cousin would be so bent out of shape. When Allie finds Tori kneeling over a dead body, she knows her cousin can't be the murderer! Trying to be loyal to her cousin, Allie begins to investigate, but unfortunately, so does her cousin. This book will send you on a whirlwind rind of mystery, cheating, stealing and love gone wrong. With Tori's life hanging in the balance, Allie sticks her nose in places it doesn't belong, sending her right into dangerous territory. Will Allie prove her cousin's innocence, or while she become the next victim?
You won't want to miss this wonderful cast of characters in Oh, Fudge. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
This was a fun book to read. We get to meet Allie's cousin Victoria and we see that when she was comes to the island she is still considered a local and Allie is still a fudgie. Between a murder, a kidnapping and seeing her cousin kissing her boyfriend Trent, Frances and Douglas finally tie the knot. The motive for the murder and the murderer was easy to figure out. And the person committing the robberies was a no Brainer.
I did enjoy the book as always. But was a little surprised to see more editing mistakes than I have ever seen in this series. I also hope that the story line will not start to include Allie having trouble deciding between Trent Jessop and Rex Manning. Really don't want to see this series go the way of the Hannah Swenson series.
Great series, great story! I'm always enchanted by the island setting of the Candy-Coated mysteries. The story definitely kept me guessing until the very end. The only thing I didn't like was how often Allie put herself in potential danger. Though characters in mysteries often make foolish mistakes while investigating, Allie seemed especially careless in this book. But I still love this series and will grab book #6 when it's released!
This was a good one. I always enjoy these trips to Mackinac island and my fudge friends. The mystery was good, kept me guessing until the exciting ending. I also can’t wait to see what happens next in Allie’s personal life.
When Allie arrives for a meeting at the Mackinac Island Butterfly House she is shocked to discover her estranged cousin Tori standing over a body holding a bloody trowel. Tori swears she only tried to pull the trowel out of the body and it made things worse. Allie believes her cousin but when Rex arrives on the scene with Shane and the CSI team, Tori becomes a person of interest in the murder of Barbara Smart, a well-known and popular woman on the island. Allie begins investigating in her usual way, while Tori launches an investigation of her own. Tori has sources Allie doesn't, being native to the island, while Allie is a newcomer, a "fudgie." Will she ever be rid of that hateful label? With her adorable BichonPoo pup Mal under her arm to charm anyone into confessing, Allie is is determined to clear her cousin's name. Rex is determined to keep Allie from doing anything stupid.
Mystery wise this is a very complicated story. I didn't guess who or what except for the fact I skimmed ahead before going to sleep! I didn't know the whole so I was still guessing as I finished the book the next night. I was really surprised by everything that happened. I had forgotten how dark these books get though. I can NOT stand any kind of cruelty or violence towards animals and every criminal knows the way to get to Allie is to get Mal. Allie needs to do something about that shadow stairwell to Mal's backyard!
The relationship plot focuses primarily on Allie and Tori's relationship. Tori left the island in high school when her father moved the family to California. Tori's uncle was Allie's beloved grandfather who left Allie the McMurphy. It seems Tori feels a bit disgruntled. I don't know why Allie doesn't feel the need to put her promise into legal writing! The whole point is to have something to pass down to Tori's heirs and by then Tori and Allie will be dead.
The secondary relationship plot focuses on Frances and Mr. Devaney who are finally ready to tie the knot! Will they or won't they because of the events of the novel is the question? There's also a bit of the Trent-Allie-Rex love triangle. It's obvious Rex and Allie have chemistry but he's a cop and she's a nosy civilian. Trent is boring and safe but he's never around. Which one will Allie choose? She's too busy to be in a relationship!
The local color is pretty good. I get a sense of the community spirit on the island but it does continue to bug me as much as it does Allie that they still consider her a "fudgie." Surely her relationship with her grandparents must count for something! I especially love the fudge making! I want to try one of the recipes but replace the almonds with peanuts to make rocky road fudge instead.
Character wise, this series falls a little flat for me. I'm not crazy about Allie. She is now trying to make friends in the community but she feels affronted that someone other than her friend Jenn, a newcomer like herself, would be chosen to plan an event. Allie bristles at being called a "fudgie" and it makes her a bit hostile to the locals. The seniors at the senior center are a hoot. Allie's friend Jenn is nicer and has more personality than Allie. Sandy, Allie's chocolatier, isn't in the story except as a pair of hands making fudge. Frances is kind and always sees the positive side of things but I didn't always agree with her. Mr. Devaney may be cranky but he has a kind heart and his love for Frances shows clearly. Rex is too macho for my tastes but I understand where he's coming from. Allie does some really incredibly stupid, dangerous things in this book. She doesn't learn. Officer Lasko is right to dislike her. Mal is as adorable as ever! Her antics stretch my credibility a bit but at least this time she didn't find the body.
New characters include Allie's cousin Victoria. Tori is a pill. I don't get her animosity towards Allie. Her beef is with her late uncle. He's dead. Have your lawyer call Allie's lawyer and hope Allie believes you. Don't hate Allie for inheriting. Allie clearly has the passion and drive to run the McMurphy. Barbara, the murder victim, was an awful person. I don't understand why women act like that and why men fall for it. Her best friend Wanda liked her only because Barbara didn't threaten Wanda. Wanda's husband is a bit suspicious. I didn't like him. Blake, the manager of the Butterfly House, arrived on the scene pretty quickly. I suspected her of murdering Barbara at first. Blake seems pretty timid and a bit lacking in common sense. She does sound like she'd defend her butterflies at all costs though so maybe she is a killer.
I am interested enough to read the next book in the series maybe this winter.
From the perfect title to the adorable cover with a sweet doggie that looks like one of my friend’s furbaby, OH FUDGE by Nancy Coco captured my attention from the very first page which starts off with a bang. The author takes the reader on roller-coaster of a ride with Allie McMurphy, owner of McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop on Mackinac Island. The murder becomes personal when Allie’s cousin, Tori, is found standing over the dead body with her fingerprints all over the weapon. To make matters worse, Allie hasn’t seen her cousin for a very long time and there’s angst between the two women after Tori feels slighted out of inheriting the family’s McMurphy Hotel. Allie wants to believe in her cousin’s innocence but Tori seems to be hiding something which prompts Allie to get involved. The delicate balance between estranged family relationships is explored and you can’t help but hope a solution is found for the two young women.
In addition to a mystery full of suspects, the author includes humor to keep the reader entertained. I enjoyed the repartee between Allie and her best friend, who plans events for her hotel and shop. I was also amused when Allie comments on the accent her California aunt has when visiting Mackinac Island. Being born and raised in California, trust me, we truly believe the rest of the country has accents and we are accent free…lol! There is also some sweet romance and could there be a wedding in the mix? You need to read OH FUDGE to find out!
Be prepared to crave chocolate while reading this book – you’d better have some on hand! Nancy Coco provides many yummy fudge recipes and they’re all on my list to try. I started with Salted Caramel Fudge because 1) it sounds incredibly delicious – I love dulce de leche! 2) This recipe is both quick and easy to make and 3) Apparently fool-proof, which I appreciated because I've had the unfortunate happenstance of some fudge recipes turning super grainy. And let me tell you, Salted Caramel Fudge did not disappoint… in fact, it exceeded my expectations and instead of sharing the goodies with a few friends, I kept most of it for myself! And as soon as I finished that off I contemplated making another batch…
I was provided an advanced copy with the hopes I would review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Oh Fudge is the sixth in a Candy Coated Mystery series by Nancy Coco. This cozy mystery is set around the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop located on Mackinac Island in Michigan. Allie McMurphy, granddaughter to Liam McMurphy past owner and operator of the McMurphy, has been left the McMurphy. Although Allie spent many summers with her grandparents on Mackinac Island, she is considered a Fudgie (one who was not raised on the island). Allie is determined to show those who have always been a resident that she is not a Fudgie and has did as much as she can to improve the McMurphy as well as trying to be a model resident. When her cousin Victoria Andrews comes back to Mackinac Island to help plan a special fund raiser for the Butterfly House and to express her displeasure with her cousin Allie in not being left a part of the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop. When Victoria aka Tori is found with blood on her hands, Allie takes on the responsibility to prove her cousin is not a killer and to also attempt to mend ways with Tori. This book held many twists and turns with such colorful characters such as the ladies at the Senior Center that I couldn’t resist reading one more page, chapter. I hadn’t read any of the earlier books in the series but this book stood well on its own. I was given an advanced readers copy of this book for an unbiased opinion review.
When Allie McMurphy, owner of the McMurphy Inn and Fudgeshop, comes across her cousin Tori next to a woman on the ground, one with a bloody trowel sticking out of her chest, a trowel Tori has her hand on....she makes her sit and checks the body. Tori swears she found her and was trying to aid her..Barb was her friend. It seems many are doubtful of Tori's innocence, Allie is not and with her friends seeks to unravel a very twisted tale. Allie has many suspects, while the police chief focuses on one...Tori. It's an engaging tale, peppered with humor and a bit of romance. The island characters especially the seniors lend spice. It's a recommended cozy read....not only for the story, the fudge recipes rock. I requested and received a NetGallery ARC.
Another excellent mystery in the fudge shop series, this book takes off with a bang when Allie finds her cousin holding onto a garden trowel that is impaled in a woman's chest. That starts Allie's campaign to find out who really killed the woman, and clear her cousin. Things are made more difficult because her cousin does not like her and does not want her involved in trying to clear her name. As well, there are many people who disliked the victim intensely because she was blackmailing them. Allie does eventually find the culprit but not before being in extreme danger herself.
Another great installment from Nancy Coco, the usual crowd are there (Allie, Jenn, Frances and so on!), this time Allie's cousin is in the wrong place at the right time and becomes a person of interest in a murder. Allie hopes that they can put the past behind them and work out who was the murderer because Allie is fairly sure that Tori isn't it. During all this Frances and Mr Devaney are hoping to get married, Trent is not around (or is he) and things seem to be going from bad to worse! Oh, Fudge seems to sum up the situation rather well.
I have enjoyed every book in this series I've read. Despite being set on an island, the author does a good effort in every book to take us somewhere different on the island though a lot is set in the McMurphy.
There were a couple of things that detracted a bit from this outing and the first is the potential love triangle. I'm tired of love triangles in mysteries and I couldn't decide if Allie was acting out of character or not in her handling of the situation. I may also have missed something, but I thought someone had sworn to stay on the island, but was suddenly in Chicago. I also knew who the murder was and the motive pretty much straight from the start. Luckily, the author threw in more bad "goodness" to keep the reader interested.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I always like getting a new book in this series because I like the characters, although the MC is becoming TSTL. Also the love triangle is getting more play, which is annoying.
Allie's cousin comes to the island and is a murder suspect after finding a dead body. Allie wants to help, but her cousin doesn't like her which bugs Allie. Mal is a cute as ever and there are plenty of fudge recipes.
This is the fifth book in the series. I enjoyed it, however it just didn’t have that zing like the others did. I really, really enjoyed the ending, though and that definitely makes up for it all.
What a delight to be back at the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop on Mackinac Island! Allie has new fudge recipes to share, and her pup, Mal, has new tricks to show friends and visitors. We also get a glimpse into the island’s butterfly house, based on a real and fascinating attraction. Fifth in its series, Oh, Fudge! can be read as a standalone.
Allie was going to see the manager of the Mackinac Island Butterfly House and Insect World to plan a package tour. Allie hears a scream, and rushes in to find … her cousin, Tori, holding the handle of a gardening trowel plunged into the body of Barbara, a wealthy widow? With Tori holding the bloody hand spade, she is the only suspect. Tori had come back from California to plan a fund-raiser at the Butterfly House with Barbara, but was clearly too late.
Tori doesn’t like Allie, yet Allie wants to find the real culprit(s) as she believes Tori is innocent. Tori lived on the island most of her life while Allie, a summer visitor, inherited the McMurphy. Allie learned to make fudge with secret family recipes, and went to college to help her learn culinary skills. Allie had renovated the McMurphy. Now Tori wants part of the Hotel and profits as her portion of the inheritance.
As if Allie doesn’t have enough going on, she finds out her boyfriend Trent is back on the island from a business trip the hard way. While walking Mal, she passes the stables owned by Trent’s family and finds Tori kissing Trent – and him kissing her back. No. Way. Rex, the island’s lead policeman, keeps a close eye on Allie as he knows how she likes to ‘investigate’. Even if her love life is as messy as heated and spilled fudge, Allie can focus on the murder.
Nancy Coco has mixed together an eclectic group of people that, perhaps because of their eccentricities, works! Take Barbara, for instance. She seems at first like an innocent lady in her late sixties, possibly in the wrong place at the wrong time. When Allie begins to find out more about her, what skeletons are dancing in her closets! Tori, who seems to hate Allie, is loved by most on the island because she is from there, while Allie is still considered a “fudgie”, a tourist who comes to taste the world-famous fudge. Yet Allie is more devoted to the neighbors on Mackinac Island than most people.
This riveting read has several mysteries going on, making it increasingly suspenseful and interesting. There is no shortage of suspects in Barbara’s murder; she was known to bribe people when necessary and change men frequently, including husbands of her friends. Allie goes the distance trying to find the bad guy(s), even talking with the seniors at the center who hear all the gossip. I love the setting, Mackinac Island, the McMurphy, and the Butterfly House! There are plot twists that rival the LA freeway system, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Even though I figured out part of the resolution, there was part that I didn’t. I absolutely enjoyed watching Allie and Tori try to find solution and learn the motives, and found the solutions satisfying. I highly recommend Oh, Fudge! It is at times LOL funny, at other times purely suspenseful or heart-pounding. It is not, however, ever dull!
From a grateful heart: I received this eBook from the publisher and NetGalley, and this is my honest review.
Allie inherited her family’s Hotel and Fudge Shop, the McMurphy. When her cousin Tori shows up on Mackinac Island after living in California, she is angry and rude. Allie learns of her cousins visit on the island when she walks in on her standing over a dead woman impaled with a garden spade.
Allie hasn’t spoken to her cousin in years and doesn’t understand why she is treating her like a mean stepsister. She soon learns that Tori is resentful because she did not inherit the hotel and fudge shop and blames Allie for it. When all is said and done, family comes first. Allie doesn’t believe her cousin is a killer, no matter what the investigator thinks. Butterflies may be free, but Tori won’t if the cousins can’t bury the hatchet, preferably not in each other's backs, and work together to catch a killer. -- Series: A Candy-Coated Mystery Author: Nancy Coco Genre: Cozy Mystery Publisher: Kensington
Oh Fudge is a great romp through Mackinac Island with delicious fudge and murder. Nancy Coco, has crafted an intelligent and entertaining mystery. The story tests the family dynamic and throws in fudge recipes that will make the reader's mouth water.
The setting is ideal for a murder mystery. The residents use a bicycle or walk to get around the island. The only way off the island is by air or boat. This guarantees the reader that the killer is not only still on the island, but is most likely one of its citizens. It is an investigator's dream scenario and his worst nightmare at the same time.
The characters are well rounded with traits that endear them to the audience and allows the reader to understand the relationship interactions with little to no explanation. Although this is the 6th book in the series, it can easily stand on its own. Readers won’t get lost trying to figure out what happened previously or who the players are. The only thing missing from the story would be a better look at what Mackinac Island life is truly like.
The action throughout the book is consistent. At times the plot will make the reader anxious to turn the page and keep reading to find out what happens. The words flow nicely, and the story is fast-paced. The reader can easily relate to the main characters. The killer is revealed, and all questions about the murder are answered with a satisfying ending.
This book and “A Candy-Coated Mystery” series is highly recommended. If you enjoy out-of-the-way vacation destinations, fudge, and personal glimpses into a character's life, you will enjoy Oh Fudge and the writing of Ms. Coco.
Allie is minding her own business going to meet someone at the Butterfly House when she sees her estranged cousin standing over a woman's dead body. Her cousin Tori, who has just returned to Mackinac Island, had a meeting with this woman regarding a fundraiser that Tori was asked to lead. Now Tori is the lead suspect in the case and even though they don't get along, Allie is determined to prove her cousin's innocence by investigating. Her police friend Rex is in charge of the case and fairly good-naturedly puts up with her sleuthing although he gives her a fair amount of warnings to be safe. Allie loses interest in investigating though, when she sees her boyfriend Trent (she didn't even know he was back on the island) kissing Tori. But when Tori receives a death threat and goes missing, Allie decides that family is more important than fighting.
I really like the strong family ties that went throughout the book. Allie really tried to make amends with Tori, who always seemed very disgruntled that Papa had left the hotel and fudge shop to Allie. Her reaction to seeing her cousin kissing her boyfriend was pretty natural though but I was proud of her that she tossed all that aside when Tori went missing.
I enjoyed the characters of Frances and Mr. Devaney so much. They were just so sweet and it was fun to see the wedding finally happen. Even though this is the first book in the series I've read, I sort of gathered that they had been sweet on each other for quite sometime.
The story has a lot of good twists because I first suspected someone that seemed obvious then I decided no, they were spending too much time investigating that person. I was surprised when I found out the killer. The author does a good job of misleading and weaving a fun to read story. The little dog Mal was so adorable. Some dogs in stories don't have much of a part but Mal was just a sweet little character who ended up doing something very useful.
I definitely want to return to Mackinac Island by way of the other books in this series. I enjoyed all the characters and hearing about the island itself.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for allowing me to read and review this. I voluntarily provided an honest review.
I always enjoy my visits with Allie McMurphy and her friends even if she does take chances that don't always make sense. In Oh, Fudge! she was able to convince me that, while not necessarily wise, her choices were the only option she had. That alone takes this book a step above many popular cozy mysteries. The puzzles are interesting and do not fall quite the way I expect which adds to my enjoyment of the book. Her cousin arrives on the island just in time to be suspected of murder, so naturally Allie has to investigate even though her cousin is not exactly sending off the buddy vibes of their youth. Old friends who help and support her add a warm element to the series. Frances and Devaney are ready to get married with the help of Jenn and Allie. Rex continues to frown over Allie's constant involvement in his investigations, even as he lets her know that he very much approves of her on a personal level. Trent declares his love as strongly as ever but Allie hasn't completely forgiven him for closing her out during a recent murder investigation and now a new incident puts another road block in their relationship. Oh, Fudge! is an all round winner and I can't wait for the next book in the series, and the next, and the next.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers who provide an advanced readers copy of this book. The review reflects my honest opinion. I always review books that I love and I love all the books in this series.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Oh my goodness. I seem to be reading and reviewing a whole bunch of cozies with food themes lately and sadly I cannot eat most of them, being a cat. However, I have it on good authority (my Momma) that these are all drool-worthy.. I will take her word. I must admit, I liked this one. It is set on Mackinaw Island where there are no cars and much of the island it a bit of a return to simpler times. It should be anyway but it is anything but for Allie who has been bequeathed a hotel by her grandfather. When her cousin shows up and makes a fuss over not being given a share, Allie is flommoxed. It doesn't help when Allie discovers her cousin's presence as said cousin is trying to pull a garden utensil our of the chest of a woman most of the townspeople obeyed but feared. Cousin Tori is considered the prime suspect but Allie doesn't believe it although Tori think she is trying to undermine her. She would have good reason to do so after she spots Tori smooching her boyfriend. Complicated? You bet. Fun? For sure. I suspect we will hear more from Allie and that is fine by me. I give it five purrs and two paws up.
You will find yourself in Mackinac Island visiting Allie and her friends. The Candy shop is going great and Allie is holding her own with the McMurphy Hotel. Frances is planing her wedding. Allie is asked to meet the curator at the Butterfly House. Arriving there she finds her cousin, Tori standing over a dead woman touching the weapon who is arrested for the murder. Tori is furious with Allie because she did not inherit the hotel and now as the witness against her. The twists and turns that this book will keep you turning the pages. There looks like there might be some romantic problems ahead for Allie. Candy Recipes are included and inserted between the chapters. I highly recommend this book and series.
Disclosure: I received a free copy from Kensington Books through NetGalley for an honest review. I would like to thank them for this opportunity to read and review the book. The opinions expressed are my own.
The setting and main characters were wonderful, but the mystery felt a little too simple. I also felt that Tori was a little too over-the-top at times. The scenes at the senior citizen center were my favorite - I loved how they were easily bribed with fudge, and not afraid to admit it. It was interesting to get a look at how the islanders view people. Although Allie lives on the island, she is still viewed as an outsider, which hinders her investigation at times.
Book #5 in this series finds Allie's estranged cousin accused of murder. Despite everything that's happened, Allie works to clear her cousin's name, which is more than I might do in similar circumstances. Then again, not all families are as close as Allie's seems to be. I was happy to see some relationships in the book progress, while others seem to have faded away, and I appreciated Tori's parents reassuring Allie in regards to her inheriting the McMurphy.
The victim wasn't really well-liked around town, so there were plenty of suspects to choose from. I was partially right about the identity of the killer, and had the motive partially right as well. The rest of it surprised me. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Yes, I live in Michigan. Yes, I love the UP (Upper Peninsula) and Mackiniac Island. I love these places for so many reasons. Although I live many hours away from these locations I always look forward to going back each time a book in this series comes out. I absolutely love this series and this book was no exception. Loved every minute of it! The only down side is have to wait for the next book to come out.
Once again, I am thrilled with what Nancy Coco brings to the page. This series has everything that I love in a cozy mystery. The story is great and the recipes are to die for. I love Mackinaw Island and can't get enough about the adventures that I get to read about there. Thank you for bringing them to life for me.
