A compilation of essays from the late sixties by some of the most perceptive cultural critics involved in the rock music scene. (To be clear, this is not rock and roll, a fifties genre, but rock, the music of the Cultural Revolution of the late sixties.) The book is fascinating since it straddles the line between serving as a primary and secondary source. These were music intellectuals' early attempts to comprehend rock music's relationship to the broader counterculture movement and to other music genres like folk. Along with the magazines and other media in which these authors published, the essays in the Age of Rock can be read as the first tentative steps toward understanding (and staking out positions within) an ideology of rock music. For that alone, it's worth picking up.

This book was actually quite interesting. I liked all the different perspectives on different bands and styles of music. Especially since most of the chapters were written by different people, who I'm sure are experts on the bands they wrote about. There was interesting insight into some of the lives of different band members and even reasons behind their songs. Even though I feel as if it could have been condensed down a little, it was still informational and educational. I would recommend this to anyone interested in music from 1960-1980!

I stole this one from my high school library 'cause it was ROCK N ROLL, man!!! I didn't understand most of what I read then, but looking at it now, I think I would probably really enjoy it. Many of the essays seem very academic.
