The Mountain Shifters #2

His Reluctant Omega

Rate this book
Mitchell is an alpha among alphas in the brutal Mountain Ridge Pack. He rules with equal parts fear and respect, but his pack is growing restless after decades without an heir to his proverbial throne. Only an alpha and an omega pair can sire another alpha to lead the pack, but Mitchell's not-so-secret shame is the fact that he hasn't been able to impregnate any of his female omegas.

Unlike the other weaker packs, the Mountain Ridge wolves have always kept their omegas in line and at a safe distance through the infamous yet efficient Breeding Program. On the recommendation of an old rival turned tentative friend, Mitchell decides to try his hand--among other things--in a last-ditch effort at siring an heir with a rare male omega. When a transfer request for one of the only male omegas in the pack uncovers unspeakable abuse and corruption within the Breeding Program, the very future of the pack is thrown into question.

Angel's heart has turned to stone after a lifetime of abuse at the hands of the alpha shifters who oversee the Breeding Program in his pack unit. The only love he has left belongs to the three other omegas he shares his little corner of hell with. Angel will do whatever it takes to protect them, even if it means becoming the mate of the top alpha himself.

Angel knows better than to believe the gruff Mitchell when he claims that he's not like the others. Despite his best attempts to steel himself against the strange bond that forms between them, Angel discovers that Mitchell is the most dangerous alpha of all because he wants the one thing Angel has sworn never to give--his heart.

With war looming on the horizon, a pack in chaos and two hardened hearts melted by an unlikely spark of love, only one outcome is certain. The Mountain Ridge Pack will never be the same.

The story started off really well. I was intrigued beyond my expectations. The omegas were pretty amazing, and Mitchell was fine too. Then they mentioned the cheating and how Angel got turned on by it. That pretty much soured the fun for me. And the ending really disappointed me.

CHEATING. 61% into the book. The Alpha was fighting the mating drive to be with his omega after they had sex the first time and he gave him a mating bite. This shifter world required two bites to become official mates, one in human form and the other in wolf form. For several days he had been staying away from home for long hours and sleeping on the couch to avoid his omega. The Alpha got his beta to keep tabs on his omega and report back. To take the edge off of his sexual frustration, he had sex with his beta. He finally realized that he needed to apologize to his omega, bought flowers and went home early. They immediately had sex, and while his omega was sitting in his lap impaled on his xxx, the Alpha admitted to having sex with his beta. I kid you not - and it got worse. The omega didn't get jealous or hurt - no, no, no - he got turned on. Then they proceeded to have dirty sex talk about the Alpha's escapades with his beta while they had knotting mating sex. This was so shocking, disgusting, and repugnant!!!!!!

It was not until later that these two professed their love for each other. The Alpha did not believe in romantic love or mates. His pack did not follow shifter tradition for reproduction. Omega males and females were confined to a forced breeding program. But the Alpha's spiritual advisor had told him that this omega was his mate. His fellow alpha mentor had described what the mating pull felt like. When they had sex, he knotted for the first time, and he knew that only happened with true mates and it was a fertile mating. This Alpha was in total denial. But in this paranormal world, the mate pull obviously did not create exclusivity to one's fated mate. The story never did explain if monogamy came about after the second mate bite.

This was a real pisser for me because I HATE CHEATING and read shifter romances to avoid that trope. Shame, because this book was really good with an interesting shifter world.

I definitely enjoyed this story more than the first one in this series, I thought the writing was stronger and I liked the story telling more. I'm a sucker for characters who are badass on the outside but really just want to be loved and are a softie, and also for characters who had a bad past get their HEA, and this gave me both with Mitchell and Angel.

I definitely do think it's best to have read the first book in the series since it does continue on and helps to know what has happened. This is a fun series so far, I'm enjoying it!

There are some spelling errors and typos through this book, so a better editing job is needed, but I was still able to really enjoy this story. Interesting with the pack dynamics and interactions there, and lots of other characters I'm enjoying too.

This was an ok read, but I made the mistake of reading ahead synopsis of other books in the series. Major character deaths are not for me.

I actually quite liked the world building and the writing was very good. What I didn't like is the way the alpha hero - who was meant to be mated to the omega - had sex with someone else as if it was a completely normal thing to do.
There was no agonizing over it. No thought of it being cheating or in any way inappropriate or wrong. It was like having lunch.
What made it worse for me, was that the guy he had the sex with (multiple times throughout the story) was also in love with someone else yet behaved utterly lust-stricken with the alpha. And STIL there was not a single word of agonizing over that. Again - having lunch, nothing to see here, no big deal.

How?

There was no mention within the world built up to that point, that such behavior is expected and normal. Nothing to prepare the reader for it and make it less offensive and uncomfortable.
It left a bad taste in my mouth and ruined the genuine feeling of connection that had been established, up to that point, between the alpha and the omega.
Perhaps the fact that the omega didn't feel any jealousy or hurt over it is meant to make it ok?
Well, it didn't, to me. That particular sex scene rang hollow and created a yucky feeling instead.

So, you may wonder, why still give it 3 stars?
Because as big a flaw as I found this particular point to be, the overall story was good and I really liked it.
But if you're going to have cheating or multiple partners after the heroes get together, that needs to be pointed out up front. If I'd been prepared for it, it would not put me off as much.

3.5 rounded up.

OK, this was definitely… what do you call it? An upgrade! Yeah, that’s the word. From the very start, this book felt like a major step up from the first one in the series. The writing was smoother, the pacing tighter, and overall I was way more engaged in the story.

The male leads? Way better. In the first book they just fell flat—I couldn’t connect to them at all. But here, they felt more down-to-earth, more relatable, and just easier to care about. That difference alone made the whole experience so much more enjoyable.

This was ok. Not badly written, it was fine writing. The story was a little too perfect, where the alpha comes to the rescue, the omega forgives and falls in love, the Tribunal doesn't kill the alpha and in fact brings him into the Council. Just a little too neat of a story. 2ish stars. Also, this could have used another read by an editor.

Love it!

The characters and storylines are amazing and interesting. I love the unique elements the story takes with gender, and with A\O\B designations. There's emotion, action, suspense and romance. Love it!

I wasn't going to bother with a review but I have to say the "cheating" didn't bother me. Yes the main couple had already had sex but they weren't REALLY together as a monogamous couple yet so I was able to let it go.
BUT I will say that it got 2☆ because this book is a complete mess when it comes to editing. I've read wattpad books with near perfect editing and those are free but this is for sale and has an insane amount of errors.

I read #1 a few years ago and then missed this one when it first came out. Overall this book has a dark feel - though part of that might come from I just came off a series binge of light, funny and positive. It might also have to do with the fact it is fire season and we are surrounded - sigh. Anyway, Great characters, and a good plot line with decent if straightforward development. The world of the story is not well developed and I seem to remember I had the same feeling with #1. This leaves me feeling a bit off with the characters not fully anchored in their world. Overall a solid 4.

Nicely rough and tumble for an Omegaverse book

Most of the Omegaverse stories I've read lately have come across like stories of traditional male/female arranged marriages. This book is significantly grittier, with interesting characters who are tough and yet also press gender lines and Alpha/Beta/Omega roles.

The ending was swift but had some nice twists and turns, making up for slow spots here and there.

The book was okay. The cheating wasn't cheating because neither saw it that way. I didn't feel the hurt I normally do when I encounter MCs sleeping with people who aren't the other MC. I just explained it off as a weird wolf thing. Plus Mitchell and Toval were so hot together. They had that sexy alpha on alpha chemistry going on. The book ends monogamously if anyone is concerned. It was really such a non-issue.
The real issue was the LONG tribunal plot. I skimmed through most of that. The rest of the book was okay. 4 stars

I liked it, but in coming to terms with his sexuality and his feelings for his omega, the alpha has on page sex with another character. Something I do like is one of the secondary characters is trans man and they show his transition, and acceptance by other characters. There is even a side romance with this character.

Unlike the first book, in which the romantic arc felt cramped and ill-at-ease, this instalment strives to lavish equal care, and to allot equal compass, to the specific pairing and the overarching plot slash world-building. Discounting the usual bombastic writing which is not helped by the properly appalling proof-reading, with hundreds upon hundreds of minor mistakes of spelling, but whose relative elaborateness has been designed to bamboozle into admiration subliterary readers, there are enough serious irrational elements between these covers to sink the plot and kill off the entire romance. The obvious elephant in the room in this regard is the cheating of the Alpha lead despite his feelings for his Omega mate; wholly unnecessary in terms of plotting, as this spectacular turn of events brings nothing whatsoever and does not even spell momentary trouble for their mating here, let alone the big fight followed by a repentance scene in which the guilty party has to grovel that a less idiotic author would have felt compelled to write, one can only deem this cheating pointless and otiose and redolent of atrocious literary taste from the part of Mrs Davis, as infidelity by one mate is one of the biggest conceivable breaches of canonic shifter lore out there. My guess would be that the author was well aware of how tepid her romance turned out to be so she decided to spice it up with this breach of matehood monogamy in the hope that the Alpha's psychological specifics would suffice to have it pass muster. In my eyes, the particulars of the Alpha hero were not enough to warrant on his side unapologetic cheating that brings nothing, results in nothing and is promptly discarded by the interested parties. The brittle yet iron-spine Omega hero ought rather to have been allowed to lead the narrative in his stead; yet even him would not have saved this book, given the preposterous element that dominates in his psychological portrayal and which is not restricted to his nigh incredible reaction to the news that the Alpha who just knotted him into oblivion shagged a Beta and his, yet more preposterous, tolerance of said Alpha's subsequent vagaries.

I have to say I really like this one better then the first one and I like the first one.

The story is about Mitchell, the Alpha of the Mountain Ridge pack, asking Barnabas as to why he is not getting an heir when he basically slept with every female omega in his pack, who are part of a Breeding program. It turn out that he need to sleep with a male omega to at least get an heir, which lead him in finding one name Angel. Angel has been living in hell cause the Breeding program is nothing more then as excuse for the Alpha and Beta of his pack to us him to relieve there pleasure on him and his fellow omega. Just when he thought that there is no light in sight that is when Mitchell found out what is really going on and close down the faculty that Angel and his friends were in and lead them to safety to heal and recover. Mitchell know that a change has to be made to he call for the Tribunal to judge his packed justice be serve. However, Mitchell know that he made not make it out alive so the least he can do is give Angel and his friend a better life but that easier said then done when he finds out that Angel is actually his bonded mate. Will they both make it out alive and be given a second chances that they both deserve or will Mitchell sin lead him to his death and no future with Angel.

Like I said I really like this story cause it develop little by little and there were no rush and went smoothly. I like that Angel was different then the rest of the omega cause he have an instinct to protect which is something different then most of the omega that is know to nurture and be protected then be the one to protect, which in turn is the reason want Mitchell was drawn to when he meet him. The chemistry between them was a first rocky but soon they discover that they were made for each other but to stubborn to admit it. I'm really glad that it wasn't love at first sight and they both need to get there feeling in order before anything else happen.

Overall, I really enjoy this book and I can't wait for the next one. Hopefully it will get better and better.

Or for fuck's sake. We get it, Mitchell is the manliest man who has ever manned - does he have to have a 10" dick as well?!

Anyway. He is the alpha of the Mountain Ridge pack. The huge pack is isolated and secretive, and run and organized much like a military operation. Mitchell is a much better leader leader than his dad was, but still has some glaring blind spots.

Case in point: The horrible Breeding Program that is more an organized rape and abuse operation than a way to make more babies for the pack. After having had no luck with female omegas, Mitchell sends his beta Toval to find him a male one insted. Toval meets Angel, and through him (and all his injuries) they discover the way the omegas are really treated in these facilities.

(BTW, Toval gets his own story in Their Omega.)

Mitchell takes responsibility for the system that allowed this to happen, or at the very least just didn't notice, and shit hits the fan. At the same time, he and Angel discover that there is more between them than just Stockholm syndrome.

3,5*

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:
A 3,5* is clicked with a 4* but in review marked as 3,5*:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-Away-book like ‘Jesse's Smile’ or ‘Joey’ from Angelique Jurd, ‘Save the the kids’ series
from EM Leya, ‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or ‘Liberty’ from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books and Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader (2-3 times a year),
it's like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (I wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok)
It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolute NO-GO). It's like failure in the
whole line, dismissed, repeat the class

TW: cheating

The cheating was off-putting to say the least. The last time Mitchel has sex with Toval, his beta, who is NOT his mate is in chapter 21. There are 30 chapters in total. The intimacy between him and his beta makes no sense to me. It was so unnecessary.

“This had to end. Mitchell knew his time on earth was limited to days, and his time with Angel was limited to hours. ”

He thinks this then proceeds to fuck Toval lmao. Make it make sense.

“Fucking Toval was all about dominance and submission, but it had its own kind of intimacy.”
...
“Toval moaned, throwing his head back in either agony or bliss. Maybe both, thought Mitchell. “Not good, Sir.”
“Are you ever going to try a stunt like that again?”
Another squeeze and Toval's cock twitched in his grasp. “No, Sir.”
“Who's your alpha?” For another few nights, at least.
“You are, Mitchell.”

Mitchell might as well have coupled up with Toval cuz wtf. He told Angel about Toval once but he never tells Angel that he had sex with Toval again afterwards.

"His Reluctant Omega" received TWO AND A HALF stars.

I like the Mountain Shifters series. The characters are lovable and engaging and the plot pulls me in. But each story I’ve read in this series has needed a good edit. I was pulled out of the story constantly by copy editing mistakes. Mitchell’s name was used quite often when it should’ve been Barnabas’s.

The novel gained *stars* for these items:

* gained for: “The book caught my interest in the first five pages."

1/2 * gained for: "I thought about the book when I was forced to set it down and re-enter society."

* gained for: "I was sad when the book ended. I wanted more!"

The novel failed to gain stars for these items:

NO STAR gained for: "There were no info dumps, poor writing, or copy edit mistakes that jerked me out of the story."

NO STAR gained for: "That's it. I'm hooked on this author. I will automatically try anything s/he writes."

I can see why this have 4 stars now

As a fan of L.C David I can see why this book didn’t do as good. You can’t write a romance book literally with all the details of Mitchell and toval his beta then put Mitchell and angel together. After Mitchell finds angel he still goes and seeks pleasure from his beta toval and that just rubs people the wrong way.
When you read things like that it just sets a bad vibes for the whole romance story to truly believe they’re mates. This book could’ve been so good too but it’s ok if you can overlook the fact that one of the MC keeps sleeping with a side character. If it had been an erotica book I’d make sense but when writing a romance book it really turns off readers to the point where it’s almost unredeemable and hard to find that the character has any other decent quality to make the rest of the story feel truly like a romance book. Better luck next time I guess.

So bummed.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was excited to start the second. Unfortunately, the story has one of the plot points that really annoy me, and I found myself unable to invest in the characters because of it. I'm sure, other people will be fine with it, but for me, it kept pulling me out of the story. And since it happens several times, I finally had to just give up.

Like others have said, the "cheating" threw me off. I suppose they didn't specify exclusivity and Angel was turned on by the idea of Toval and Mitchell together, so I guess to each their own. The rest of the book wasn't awfully captivating. Typical trope of omega abuse and the alphaest Alpha and the feisty atypical omega fall in love, some semblance of a pack war, blah blah blah.
This is a series I read on and off (and out of order) when I'm in the mood for omegaverse shenanigans, but I've read through the rest of the blurbs and Mitchell and Mel die at some point, so I don't think I'm going to read any more related to those two. I may be done with this series altogether

Okay

I was really looking forward to this story and for the most part I did enjoy it. However, the part had issues with was how after both Mitchell and Toval have realized their love for their respective mates, they still keep finding themselves together in one sexual encounter after the other. I understand the original premise but after declaring love for his mate and his mate being receptive I just couldn't get behind the reasoning used for the continuing physical activity. Otherwise, Angel is the perfect Omega to handle Mitchell. When I glazed over the Toval/Mitchell sexual encounters after he and Angel got together, I did enjoy the story.

I’m such a sucker for love stories. Throw in emotionally damaged people and I’m beyond hooked.

I read some people saying they were disappointed with the cheating element in the book, and I have to say I do hate cheating, but honestly, I don’t really think that it applies here. I respect other people’s opinion, but I don’t agree.

I was wary of this book in the beginning because I didn’t care for Mitchell in the first book. It sounded like he would be too much, but honor was key in my liking this book as much as I did. I’m happy to have chosen to go ahead and read it. I was not disappointed.
