My first thought after finishing this book was, "I am glad that is over."

I am not sure if I like that story at all. There were so many blank pages and double spacing in this book that it drove my ocd crazy.

The lack of self-preservation is mind-boggling. I get that this was based in the late 90s/early 2000s, but there is so much that was sending up red flags that she shouldn't have been in that situation in the first place. The only reason I gave it two stars was because it did have a really nice twist at the end.

without a doubt, one of the worst books I've read this year. Couldnt wait to be no longer reading it .

I really really really wanted to like this book, but the first chapter in I already knew I was probably not gonna like it, but I was not prepared to hate this book as much as I did.

I dont even know how to start this rant.

1. This is so very painfully written by a man. Anne Harper is supposed to be a grown woman who lives in NYC of all places and for some reason, has not a single worry in the world about her safety.
Im sorry, but I dont think any grown woman in existence (even 10 years ago) would be THIS flippant about a man she has a RESTRAINING ORDER against
-finding out the exact time and location of her retreat, where she will be alone, without cell service, 20 miles from ANYTHING, etc.
-having a manuscript not mailed there but DROPPED off, since it was specified that it was addressed to her office, not the cabin. Without even questioning who might have realistically dropped it off there
-finding out the manuscript, this man with a violent track record is written about your exact situation down to nearly every detail, with the role of the stalker going to a person that fits his own description

Anne ignored literally any and all red flags, which reeks to me of the writer being a man unaware of how hyper vigilant women are about their own safety on average. Especially again, considering that Anne is from New York City. She just keeps looking at the very concerning things going on around her and just says, "nu uh, couldn't be." Handwaving any and all of the MANY concerning things going on.
I laughed out loud when the stalker in his internal monologue says something like "you're smarter than that Anne" when she finally decided to lock the cabin door for the first time, but apparently FORGETS TO MAKE SURE THE SPARE KEY ISNT STILL OUTSIDE (in like the most obvious stereotypical spot ever might I add). This woman has been going to this cabin for 10 years every year. There isn't a world in which you could convince me that she doesn't know where the spare key is. So no, Mr. Stalker. She really isn't. She in fact is really fucking stupid for most of the book.

2. The Stalker sucks. Not as in he-is-a-bad-person-sucks (which I mean he doesnt but that's not the problem here) but as in, he sucks as a character. He's not intimidating when he is just a creepy incel jacking it in the corner, saying some of the corniest shit I've ever read in a published book ever. So many terrible puns. So many pop culture references. For fucks sake he literally references Jack Nicholson fron the shining when breaking through a door at one point. His And the book treats him like he's so highly intelligent when he's an idiot.

3. The writing is awful.
There is:
-constant repetition of words back to back -truly weird word choices like "virgin blue", "punky cedar", "gummy pine" etc, that I assume are meant to sound cool or poetic but just sound dumb because they dont make sense
-overuse of unnecessary adjectives (at multiple instances stacking adjectives that are literal synonyms of each other. e.g. "he grew aroused, erect and hard")
-constant overexplaining of what was just said, like the reader is too dumb to infer anything from the text and put 2&2 together (i promise you your readers are not this dumb)
-multiple spelling mistakes
-constant (and I do mean CONSTANT) mentions of IRL brands, stores, artist, musicians, authors, pop culture references etc, as if the author isnt confident in his own writing and has to ivoke or FULLY QUOTE known and memorable works of better creators to do the heavy lifting for him. There was a total of 10 businesses, 3 brands, 7 books, 6 characters (from OTHER Movies/books etc), 4 magazines, 10 TV channels/programs, 3 Artists, 7 Writers (multiple were mentioned more than once), 5 public figures/celebs, 5 musicians/bands mentioned throughout the book.
-constant choppy weird sentences at random. This can be done well, to set a mood or convey a hectic situation, but it was done with no rime or reason in this book
-so many awful (and often overexplained) puns. If I read another pun involving the title I will lose it.
-the tonal continuity is just bad. We flip flop between most of the book having an almost juvenile tone, while also using verbiage and sayings so unserious that it would make literally any antagonist just not intimidating, but then have randomely the most depraved fully written out literal torture porn on page
-the book is constantly either sucking it's own dick about how genius it is or lampshading /self-dissing. Just because you say "books suck when characters act unrealistically " doesn't make your book suck less when you write it that way.

4. I just dont think the excerpts of torture porn were necessary? It was already very obvious what he was planning to do roughly, the details of it just werent needed and just felt gratuitous. It makes me look at an author sideways when they are way too eager writing something like that in detail 🤷🏽‍♀️

5. The worst formatting and layout of a nook I've ever seen. So many empty pages, every chapter starting in the middle of the page for some reason and the writing being so weirdly large on the page, like I was reading a children book. I'm pretty sure if you'd format this normally it wouldnt even come up to 200 pages.

The only enjoyment I got from this book was giving my husband a recap of it, reading him some of the most egregious excerpts and making fun of how stupid it was.

It started off very slow to me, and I wasn't entirely certain I like his writing style. After page 124 though, I couldn't put it down and finished it that night. While still not entirely liking the writing style, I did really enjoy the story being told.

Oh my goodness y'all, this book!! Fast paced and action packed, I could not put it down and finished it in like a day and a 1/4! Some of the torture scenes were a little too intense for me, but not to the point where I wanted to stop reading it. Great couple of twists and I liked the way it ended as well. Would absolutely recommend this book to a friend!

Side note: I read two separate reviews saying, "Women don't just stare at their breasts in the mirror" Maybe I'm oversharing here, but uh, I totally do! 😅 If I can't appreciate them, then who will?! It's okay to love and appreciate your body.

"Christopher Knight", who is better known for his children's book series - Michigan Chillers, American Chillers, and more- is an excellent adult horror author. In my opinion, he easily rivals Stephen King (whose stories contain an unexplainable and uncontrollable evil that is always seeping under the ground permeating everything in Maine- a theme that seem to underly every one of King's novels, and is always the cause of inexplicable horrors that occur in each of his books - eyeroll here from me- I could only suspend my disbelief for that theme for so many novels before I stopped reading Stephen King books). Christopher Knight (aka Jonathan Rand, aka Christopher Wright), on the other hand, has a fresh and interesting evil in each one of his stories, making each one unique and fun, albeit horrifyingly scary to read (and to think about after dark when you're alone!).

As an author it was interesting to read his book Bestseller about an agent being stalked by an author. You'll explore both the mind of the stalker and that of the agent in this thriller - with some surprising twists you won't see coming. I could hardly put it down and devoured it in less than a day. I'm working on Ferocity now (just purchased it a few hours ago and am about halfway done). Though this book was published 16 years ago- it is not the least bit dated.

This was definitely interesting to read. Got right into my head. I felt like I was Anne and I was definitely creeped out by "The Stalker" the entire time. The twist though is what really got to me.
Hoping to make it to Christopher's store this summer and tell him how much I enjoyed the book!
Edit: I went to Chillermania and got the chance to tell him I loved the book! It was awesome to meet him!

I did not like this book! I picked it up because it takes place in the area where I live. It is advertised as a psychological thriller about a girl that is stalked by someone while she is staying at a remote cabin in the woods. The premise does sound creepy.

The main reason I did not like this is because it was unnecessarily graphic. Details about human torture, rape, and masturbation while dreaming about/doing the previous two things. I realize that half of the book is from the stalker's point of view and it was important to the plot line that he had these thoughts, but the exact details that were included made me want to hurl. I almost didn't finish it because I couldn't stomach it. It could have been glossed over in a different way and still been effective for a creepy story.

The second reason is that sometimes male authors write about females in a ridiculous way and focus on their "sexy physical forms". That's what this guy did. Women do not just sit and stare at themselves in the mirror and admire their breasts, sorry.

The third reason is that there are two instances of animal abuse and murder, just to scare the main character. Poisoning of dozens of hummingbirds and purposely hooking a duck with a fishing lure and tying it up in fishing line tight enough to torture it.

The overall story had potential. There was a cool twist that I did not see coming. The ending had a nice round about way of coming together. But the other stuff was horrible.

So no... do not read this book. Unless you are a sadist psychopath that enjoys torture among other things.

I found out about this book from a friend. A friend who is amazing because she sent me this book (Thank you!).

The first thing I noticed is that this cover isn't on Goodreads. Which is a shame because I like this cover. It's minimal and gives you a direct idea on what's in store. The blurb of the book is also not on Goodreads. Again, that's a shame. If Mr. Knight reads this, I suggest doing that. Not sure what it'll do, but I love this cover more than the first and it should be shown off.

That said, this book was a good read. I suggest reading it fast though. When I set it aside for a day or two, I ended up losing the groove of the book. The reason for that is because it's very internal. Anne is mostly the only character in the book and she has minimal interaction with others for the most part.

Whereas having a mostly internal book isn't a big deal, it's actually very creepy considering, it didn't have the same effect for me as it would if I read the book in one setting. Which I could have, but life got in the way.

I will say this, I was pulled into the story quickly. The imagery is disturbing. I did find myself cringing during the baddie's chapters. Serious cringe worthy. I also felt emotional over Anne's situation. Like I said, the book does get you thinking, but you need to read it all without too many days of no reading in between. The suspense loses its effect if you do.

Totally a 4/5 stars in my opinion. And that's with the problem I had. Imagine if I didn't spend a day or two not reading... damn.

My kid and I made a visit to Chillermania yesterday, because she adores the Michigan and American Chillers. I had no idea there would be a few adult novels available. So I grabbed this, because I never pass up on a new book.

Holy crap. This was phenomenal. I couldn't stop reading it. I stayed up suuuuper late. The descriptions were fantastic... I could picture the cabin, and the lake, the birds....the details were wonderful and captured the setting perfectly.
and the story? This was intense! The suspense kept building and building, I was genuinely afraid for the main character.

I really really enjoyed this book. I'm going to have to check out his other adult novels as well. And borrow Dee's chiller collection.

I watched the movie that was based on this book before I read the book. I can't believe someone as bad as Christopher Knight got a movie adaptation before Johnathan Rand! We live in a fucked up world.

Anyway the movie has a scene where the main villain is about to chase the main character down a hill. He acts all sinister, shouting threats and insults before saying "ready or not here I come." He then immmediately fell down the hill.

I decided to recreate the scene with my fourth wife. I got her to say "Ready or not, here I come!" I then smacked her ass and she fell down the hill.

She landed on her ass. She's in the hospital now getting ass surgery. At least I don't have to worry about her finding out about my affair with Creepy Condors of California!

Pretty good movie.

Good slasher book set in the UP. I’m not a huge fan of or particularly moved by body horror, so some elements personally fell flat, but the book moved quick and the author had a good feel for plotting the story. Both internal monologue and dialogue between characters could be cringe or cliche, but I chalk that up to be a product of the genre - finer, “better written” dialogue would likely upset the breakneck pace of the book. I didn’t feel like a scene was wasted in this book, and it never felt like it dragged despite it essentially being set in a singular location.

Anyway, I enjoyed every second reading this, and that is enough for a 5/5 for me

Bestseller is a thriller so thrilling it had my heart pounding. I was fully prepared to read it and not enjoy it because it was sold in a store I thought was mostly advertising child friendly books but this is for sure an adult read! Anne is a badass. Christopher Knight is a badass. The story was perfect. I couldn’t put it down! Would’ve been 5 stars if the ending didn’t feel so rushed. Maybe that’s just me but it felt so good to get back into my favorite genre and for this to be the book to do it for me! Highly recommended for my thriller fans looking for a quick read and something new to enjoy. Short chapters, great details, good character development.

This book had so much potential. The concept was good, the twist was decent, but I really struggled with the writing. There was no inspiration to the writing and I felt like I was reading a book for 1st graders with very adult topics. The sentences were very short which made it feel chunky, chaotic, and just very off. I love a good thriller but this was not executed well. I skimmed most of this book because I had such a hard time reading the sentences. I liked reading a book by a Michigan author, but I wouldn't have picked this up if it wasn't for my book club. Would not reccomend.

Holy Crap. That was crazy.
Having spent a large portion of my childhood in the UP, fishing on lakes like the one in this book, sparsely populated, only a few cabins, with only two-tracks in & out, this was a totally believable scenario. I could actually SEE the setting in my mind. Also, I am an avid ID watcher - the characters were completely believable. Mr. Knight quickly picks up the pace and I could not put this book down. I tried, but had to can the rest of my day & just read it!!
My suggestion is don't even start this book if you don't have the rest of the day to finish it.

I… did not like this book. I like the concept and i liked that half the chapters were from the stalkers pov, but the unnecessary descriptions of rape, masturbation, and torture was very very offputting. The way Anne was written made it very clear she was written by a man. Women dont bring cutesy lacy underwear on vacation when relaxing, they don’t stare at their breasts in the mirror, etc. I could barely finish this book. It was fine. I feel like it played heavily into the sickening thoughts of the stalker and that would be fine if there was more substance within the other chapters.

This book was the hardest to put down of the books I have read this year to date. Parts of it were so twisted and disturbing but really gave the reader a peek into the killer’s mind. The ending had a very unexpected twist and left quite a few unanswered questions. I’d love to see this continued in a follow up novel. This book had a very different feel to it than other books I have read by this author, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It had me on the edge of my seat reading as fast as I could.

This story is so great and SO unique! I loved the story line and the way everything played out. I also loved the way it was written and how it went back and forth between the “real life” characters and the “book” characters. My only issue and the reason for 4 stars was the style of writing. It just annoyed me at times. The writer wrote what the characters were thinking a LOT. And also the characters corrected themselves a lot as well. It seemed very unnecessary. Also what’s with the constant italics????

So so so GOOD! Wow!

Let’s see it’s suspenseful, psychological, and addicting! I could not put this book down because I had to know what happened next. Definitely one of my favorite books now because the storyline is so well written and you’re on the edge of your seat the whole time.

As a girl from Michigan, the location of this novel seems all too realistic but wow it is so good. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to scare themselves a little bit and have a good read :))

"When a book stays with you after you've put it down, the writer has done their job."

Oh my freaking goodness I feel like my mind is twisted. I have read his other books and this was nothing like the others. This book has my heart racing, like it's a just a twisted take on a middle of nowhere crazy serial killer who is stalking his sexy prey. It is raw and vulgar, deviant, bloody, cuss word worthy. ... I like it. Wow.

I had a hard time putting this book down. Super suspenseful with a twist. As a forewarning, there are graphic scenes described which are sexual (nonconsensual) in nature, and it can get a bit descriptive with the gore. If a book makes me uncomfortable, it has done it's job - this book hit all of the check boxes. There is just enough detail to make you feel uneasy without dragging it on for paragraphs. Would absolutely recommend if you're looking for something to keep you on edge.

I enjoyed the beginning, I enjoyed the end but not crazy about the middle. The overall story was interesting but I wasn't expecting such gruesome descriptions during the second character's chapters. It could have been dialed back and still gave the same effect to the story. May or may not read more by this author in the future.
