Kali O'Brien's brother John is in trouble. Kali and John have never been close and it's been ages since she even talked to him so when he calls she sees it as inconvenient and cuts the conversation short. Unfortunately it's the last time they talk. Kali ends up trying to save her brother's reputation as she looks for answers in his death. They were ready to arrest him for murdering a coworker and her live in help when he drowned in his pool. Kali and her sister Sabrina can't believe he was capable of murder and soon don't think his drowning was an accident. Finding the answers to the puzzle are difficult especially because the detectives on the case have pinned it on John and aren't willing to look anywhere else. So it's up to the O'Brien sisters to solve the mystery. As clues come to light they learn about their brother and his life.

Kali is at it again! When her brother dies while being a suspect in a murder, Kali starts an investigation to clear his name. The list of suspects with dubious characters is long and soon Kali and her sister are warding off threats to their lives.

I've loved reading this series and watching her character develop and mature. Although I had a pretty good idea "who dunnit" about half way through the book, there were still a few twists and turns that had me doubting my theory.

Piller, as always offers a stellar performance with a wide repertoire of voices that helps the listener track all the characters.

Very good. Read this in about two days. Two sisters seek to find the answers surrounding their brother's "suicide." The brother was himself a suspect in a recent murder.

THE NEXT VICTIM (Unlicensed Investigator-Kali O’Brien-Tucson, AZ-Cont) – G+
Jacobs, Jonnie – 7th in series
Kensington Books, 2007, US Hardcover - ISBN:
First Sentence: The call came a little after two in the morning and pulled Erling from a particularly pleasant dream.
*** San Francisco attorney Kali O’Brian is away on the camping trip but, when checking messages, finds a call from her brother in Arizona, with whom she has not had contact for some time. Returning to the city, she learns her bother allegedly committed suicide after murdering a woman and her au-pair. Kali travels to Arizona to settle John’s estate and clear his name.
*** I’ve always liked Jacob’s Kali O’Brien so it was nice to read a new entry. I enjoyed the balance of the investigation and look at the relationship between Kali and her siblings, as she learns things about them she hadn’t known. There is an interesting conflict of the lead cop who knows he should recuse himself from the investigation because of an affair he’d had with the victim. It’s nice to see Kali taken out of her S.F. environment. Jacobs gives us a good sense of being in Tucson. The dialogue is a bit stilted, but the story definitely kept me turning the pages.

The Next Victim
: Jonnie Jacobs

This is the third title that I've listened to by this author, and so far my favorite. Kali O'Brien is out to prove her brother wasn't a murderer and his death wasn't an accident. She meets many people along the way. Twist after twist has the listener wondering not only who the murderer is, but also who is good and who isn't. I couldn't wait to find out who did it. I hope to get the next one soon.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed by Cindy Piller.

This is a suspenseful who-done-it with a credible plot and believable characters. It's not especially complex, but it's well paced. I suspected I knew the identity of the killer fairly early in the story, but I didn't guess the motive before it was revealed at the end.

Cindy Piller delivers a very satisfactory performance, giving distinctive and appropriate voices to the characters. This was an engaging listen.

NOTE: I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for this unbiased review.

New author for me. Was pretty decent - not as good as Crais or Child, but not bad. Took place in Tucson which was interesting. I think I'll probably read some more by her -believe this book was the last in the Kali O'Brien series.

I usually enjoy the Kali O'Brien legal series, and while this was fairly readable and kept my interest, I can't remember much about the plot, which is why I only gave it 3 stars. I figure that if no remnants of the plot stick in my brain, then it must not have been that great.

Whodunnit was pretty obvious but still a well-written and enthralling read. The author's writing has Matured so much over her career- it's fun to watch her development and see her take her writing to a new level.

This is a very good read.

Complex plot and a number of sub-plots, and good character development. A well-written novel. I enjoyed the story, and it did not reveal the culprit until the end.

Yet another beach read - slash n' trash - nothing to write home about but an entertaining book for mindless entertainment - If they had half stars, I'd give it a 2.5.

Lots of twists and turns, almost too many twists and turns. I liked the main characters, and there are some personal conflicts that are interesting. Not a bad read, but not quite a "great read".
