In a quest to earn their scavenger badges to become eagle scouts, Speed Bump and Slingshot must find something that turns, something that's pink, something that burns, and something that stinks. Their new friend Nuthatch takes them to a mall, but they get trapped inside when it closes. While making their escape Speed Bump, gets trapped in a woman's purse. Slingshot and Nuthatch rescue him and at the scout meeting Slingshot reports that they didn't find any of the items required to become eagle scouts, but Speed bump saves the day, and they both earn their badges.

Plenty of feathers in a flap in this wickedly funny madcap adventure.

Today is an important day for best friends Speed Bump and Slingshot. It is the day that they will earn their Scavenger Badge and graduate from Bird Scouts to Eagle Scouts. They just need to find a few items that, thanks to the knowledge of an energetic Nuthatch, can be acquired at the shopping mall. But acquiring items at the mall is anything but straight forward. With lock-ins to negotiate and an inadvertent bird-napping, do Speed Bump and Slingshot really have what it takes to graduate to Eagle Scouts…

If you like birds and want a read that is big on humour and comedy then this is the book for you. It is a romp of an adventure with all sorts of mayhem as two friends, guided by a hyperactive Nuthatch, get up to all sorts of hijinks. It genuinely had me laughing out loud and I will definitely be checking out the other titles in the series. The birds in this book are brilliant. Conversations are particularly hilarious as Speed Bump and Slingshot meet straight talking bluejays, a nuthatch who doesn’t know when to shut up and a dishevelled bird who lives in a bin.

The story is told through a combination of comic strips, traditional narrative and oversized illustrations with speech bubbles. Comedic moments are non-stop, whether it be slapstick humour, a funny one-liner or one of the many puns. Wordplay is in abundance and the shop names are particularly amusing - Bloominquails, Birkenstork, Abirdcrombie & Finch and my absolute favourite…Starbeaks.

Summary: Two birds, who are trying to earn their last badge to become Eagle Scouts, need to go on a scavenger hunt. However, their scavenger hunt turns into an adventure in which they get trapped in a mall and one friend must make a daring rescue to save the other friend.

Characteristics That Support This Genre: This book can be placed in the graphic novel category because it contains text and illustrations that present the story. The story is a hybrid of a chapter book and a graphic novel.

Writing Traits:
Presentation – Throughout the story, certain words are in a different font and size for emphasis. In addition, dialogue balloons are displayed differently than other text.
Organization – The beginning of the story grabs the reader’s attention and the details of the story fit together logically.

Classroom Integration: This book could be used to show how different personalities can be shown in how we write.

Other Suggestions: This book is at a 3.3 reading level. This book could also be used when teaching students about friendship and what we would do to help when a friend is in trouble.

I am all about the puns in this series (Rags 2 Ostriches, Owllister, PeckSun, Starbeaks). Hilarious.

This is a good follow up to Night of the Living Worms. It has the same style, incorporating funny illustrations with block text and speech bubbles for a non-intimidating setup for young readers.

I was a little disappointed that the "Living Shadows" didn't really play much of a role in this one. I was really intrigued by the idea, but the reveal felt lack-luster. Still entertaining, but I was expecting more based on the title.

A very humorous, fun read about two bird friends who go on a new adventure and all the havoc that ensues.

I thought this was super cute and it kept Riker interested but he gave it a rating of “zero divided by zero out of five” for failing to live up to the promise of living shadows.

Coverly, Dave Night of the Living Shadows, 122 pgs. CHAPTER BOOK Christy Ottaviano Books, 2016 (Henry Holt and Company). $13.99 Content: G.

Speed Bump and Slingshot are two birds that are best friends. They have to go on a scavenger hunt for their Boy Scout assignment and they find a bird friend named Nuthatch who takes them to the local mall to find their treasures. They end up having an adventure at the local mall.

This book is funny and the story is easy to follow along. The characters are good to each other and the adventure makes you want to keep reading to see what happens next. The illustrations are in black and white and could be better, but they still add a lot to the story.

Very funny! I love Speed Bump and Slingshot and their experience at the mall is hilarious. My only quibble is the source of their objects at the end. I know they are birds but still ..... Wish it had been slightly different.

In another outing of the two bird-brained feathered friends, Speed Bump and Slingshot are determined to earn their Eagle Scout badges. All that is in the way of their doing is completing a scavenger hunt, which they do by heading into the mall under the guidance of a new friend, Nuthatch. The mall is indeed filled with all sorts of edible delights, but getting into and out of the place is not easy. Speed Bump makes his escape in a large woman's purse, but then cannot get out of the purse. The two other birds come to his rescue, and as it turns out, he has all the items on the scavenger hunt list, taken from the woman's purse. This book with its many illustrations made me chortle, but I particularly savored the chapter titles and the amusing aviary-related store names such as Jay Crew, Chickadee Bauer, Bird Bath & Beyond, and Starbeaks, all clever little touches that enhanced my enjoyment of the story. I can only imagine that the author got completely carried away with this idea and had to rein himself in from going too far with it, but I loved it and found myself thinking of other stores and products that could be tweaked to go with the bird theme. The bond between the two close friends is evident, and their new friend seems to be a keeper as well. Also worth noting is how well the author captures the personalities of these creatures, some of whom are quite catty with their remarks. Read this one when you're feeling grumpy or have spent too much time at the mall yourself, and you will smile in amusement.
