WYNTER’S BITE by Brooklyn Ann is a historical paranormal romance vampire read that is the fifth book in her ‘Scandals With Bite’ series. This story takes you on the run with a rogue vampire and the mortal love of his life throughout England. This fifth book can be easily read as a standalone.
Bethany Mead is a bluestocking and just being brought out at country house parties. Her father wants a political connection in Parliament and to be rid of his daughter whom he fears will inherit his mother’s madness.

Justus de Wynter is scandalous and not looking for a partner, but he can’t help but feel sorry for the young girl that the other debutants have set up for failure. As he dances with Bethany, he finds she has a love of literature and books just like him, besides being enchanting and as beautiful on the inside as on the outside.

No matter how much they come to love each other, he is a vampire and it is against their law to allow a mortal to know of their kind. Justus will break that law and Bethany accidentally blurts out the truth. Bethany is confined to an insane asylum and Justus is named a rogue and banished.

Eight years pass until Justus finds Bethany again. Together they are on the run across England to find a Master Vampire who will pardon Justus and let the couple be together and safe. On their fast paced trip across England they run into many interesting characters and trials as well as grow to know and love each other all over again.

This is an enjoyable and easy read. Justus and Bethany are definitely deserving of their HEA. I also love when either or both of the main characters love reading and books. The sex scenes are short, but steamy. This story also sticks to the old rules and laws of vampires which makes the historical setting perfect for the story. An overall entertaining addition to the series.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

A few days after finishing WYNTER'S BITE, I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it. In the past, I've enjoyed the Scandals With Bite series quite a bit, but WYNTER'S BITE didn't have the same feel as the previous books in the series, and I didn't like it as much.

One positive is that I did enjoy the characters - Bethany and Justus were great. Both very strong willed and able to do what needs to be done in order to survive their circumstances, they were also super cute together, discussing books and throwing longing glances at each other early on in the book.

Where my problems lie, with WYNTER'S BITE, is the completely ridiculous plot. It seemed like many of the actions taken by the characters were very rash, and not completely in character, or, the reader wasn't given enough background of the character to understand why that character was doing something. For example, Bethany's parents having her locked up in a mental institution after one outburst, while she was a bit doped up after hurting herself, seemed a bit extreme. Then, after Bethany is rescued by Justus, they seem to be caught by every single vampire (after 8 years of Justus managing to be undetected?) in between the institution and their destination.

Lastly, the ending is tied up way too easily. There is a little bit of the miscommunication that is common in historical romance novels - where if the heroine and hero just talked to each other they would have resolved some issues - and that tends toward the annoying, but the solution to all of Justus' and Bethany's problems just was solved in a few pages.

All in all, while I liked the characters, I didn't particularly like the plot of WYNTER'S BITE. If there are more books published in the Scandals With Bite series, I will definitely read them, but this one just wasn't for me.

I think I loved this one a bit more than the others, due to the fact that, what the main characters bonded over, besides love, is that they loved reading books & discussing them! As a book lover myself, that in general was dreamy. I loved how the characters were able to grow and connect, even though they both went through some rough times.

This gets two stars only for the sheer saving grace that this book didn't make me mad like one stars tend to do. With that said, do buckle in. I took notes.

Firstly, for the first time ever, I took a count. I won't say what that count is yet, but it came out to 40.5 total, in the whole book. This is quite concerning, because despite this being a self-published book (the first three books of this series were trad published), in 287 pages, I found 40.5 typos. The half points were reserved for typos that I wasn't sure were 100% typos, or thinks that irked me, like reusing the same phrase two sentences in a row... not to mention these were obvious typos. If it was a missing period every few chapters, maybe I'd understand, but these are basic typos that had me shuddering. At one point, I had to show my boyfriend the pain of seeing the wrong use of "your" instead of "you're" (page 95. I made sure to take note).

My second issue is the order the book is written in. Chapter 1 takes places in the present time of the story, which lasts until page 12. We then launch into a flashback where we learn how our main characters ended up in this situation, so I figured it'd be a quick recap. I was questioning why we were still in the flashback by chapter 7. I had to look up when the first book took place due to the confusing namedrops to find out this book's flashbacks take place before that book. I dealt with inconsistencies of character action because I figured the flashback would be over soon enough, and we'd get to the main story. I dealt with our main girl being very dumb, as she was supposed to be naive but it didn't cross her mind a single time how going into the garden with him alone could ruin her (there's a point where your character is innocent and a point where she's just an idiot). I dealt with the main guy saying "Oh, I hope she doesn't get seriously injured when I'm not around" and his friend saying, "You're overreacting, calm down", just for said woman to get seriously injured in the next chapter like he predicted it and didn't knock on wood. Like I said, flashback, should be over soon, right?

I finished the flashback when I was drunk, but still had enough mind to write down the following; "116 pages of flashback? Even drunk this is ridiculous."

Like I said, 287 pages of book. 116 of them was spent on a flashback building up the relationship of our main characters. It would have made more sense to start with that, and have the chapter straight out of the flashback be what the actual chapter one is. Spending chapters upon chapters after your first to explain a romance just to go back to present day would be suspenseful in any other novel, but here--given the genre, the fact I've read three other books from this series, etc.--it's just tedious and nonsensical. I slogged through the flashback wondering if the whole book might just be flashback, and the chapter would be the mains escaping to start their lives together with nothing else. I had to re-read the blurb to assure myself that wasn't going to happen.

Another thing is exposition. In books like this one, it's not surprising two chapters from each character's perspective will recap the same exact details from each other, such as describing a third party the same way twice within a few pages due to POV change. However, such as on page 132, there's a huge block of text explaining the plot of book four, which I actually appreciate because I skipped that one. Still, the later recap on Lydia and Vincent's love story from book 2 is annoying all the same. I get it's for people who haven't read the other novels, but leaving a little to the imagination or not explaining it would entice readers to try the other novels. If you don't want the readers to try reading those couples' stories, sure, recap them in their entirety, but for a series that can be read out of order, the author isn't at all encouraging of reading the other novels this way.

The name drops of characters is somewhat amusing. The Duke and Duchess from book 1 are mentioned several times, though never appear, which is annoying as I genuinely enjoyed that one. Vincent and Lydia being big parts of this story is somewhat weird, as they were book 2. Gavin and Lenore, from the previous book, makes total sense, and so does the momentary introduction of our lead for the next book. Still, why wasn't book 3's main couple mentioned? One was a literal doctor, she could have helped our main girl with her drug addiction (which is only very briefly touched upon, leaving no lasting emotional or plot impact at all). There are also obvious paralells between Justus and Bethany saving each other, which is so obvious it becomes annoying, much like the sex scenes that are so awkwardly timed they might as well have me saying, "This is just like the post car-chase scene from Fifty Shades Freed."

So, for my final point, and arguably the most egregious. I loved book 1 and 2 of this series. Book 3 a little less so, this one definitely less, and I think that's due to one main thing. In books like these--particularly ones in a certain setting or time period--I think it's important that that time period actively impacts the plot. In book 1 and 2, the fact that the main girls were debutantes impacted how the story went. Book 3, less so. This book could have been written to take place at any time in history, and it would still be the same. In order for these regency romances, or historical stories with supernatural elements in general, to work, I feel like the setting needs to be integral to the world they live in. This book could be changed to take place in modern day and almost nothing of importance would be changed, aside from language used and the mention of the Roma, all that jazz.

My boyfriend told me I should read this when I asked him what to read next. I asked him why this one, in particular. I added I only hadn't unhauled it yet because his mother got it for me for Christmas, before I decided not to continue this series. He smiled and said it's because these kinds of books lead to my writing a scathing review. I told him I only tear a book apart when reading it makes me suffer.

He nodded, and here we are.

I read the previous book (another library find) where the hero of this book was the villain. I liked thIs one better. The plot was engrossing and the paranormal world building made it more interesting than a stock standard regency romance. I also liked the heroine having to really overcome some horrible circumstances but that she wasn’t a wilting flower, nor were her problems solved by the hero’s magic peen.
I still don’t understand how the whole vampire society works with members of the peerage, but whatevs.

A romance where both the heroine and hero love books, and that mutual love brings them together? Hell yes, count me into that. Then add Brooklyn Ann's Scandals with Bite series, which immerses you in her world of vampires, which has strict rules to prevent humans from finding out about the vampire world. Of course, when a vampire falls in love with a human, rules are broke and the consequences are life and death. I could not put this book down when I was reading it, I really wanted to see how they FINALLY got their happily ever after. The intense yearning and emotions the characters had for each other did not fade over time. I really enjoyed the passion throughout the book, especially how Bethany was usually the instigator, while Justus while trying to be a gentleman despite his deep desire for her. They finally find a home together, despite all the conventions they broke to get there. Appalling things happened to both of them when they were separated, but in the end justice is served.

I really liked Bethany, she was adorable, she didn't mind asking for things but the way she did it was all proper, "no, you feel good.” Her hips arched against his erection and she licked her lips. “Is it possible for us to...” she trailed off with a blush." I loved that Justus was always looking out for his woman, “food first, books after,” he said sternly, not liking the dark shadows of fatigue beneath her eyes. Who knew when she’d last slept? “And then we should rest early.” I enjoyed this book, I really liked how caring Justus could be.

Proceed With Caution:

This book is partially set in an asylum where the heroine was forcefully admitted, mentions of sexual assault, and drugging.

The Basics:

This is the fifth book of the Scandals With Bite series, but it does standalone. It’s been years since I year the previous four and I was able to follow this one with no problem. I know I missed some details and references though.

My Thoughts:

I forgot how fun these books were! Wynter’s Bite starts right in the action! Bethany has been in an asylum for eight years after her parents had her committed when she said she was going to marry a vampire. She held on to hope that something had kept him from her but that he’d rescue her from this hell, but after years of isolation and abuse, she’s given up. Only to have her love appear! Is he just a delusion as the doctor would have her believe, or is he finally here to take her away?

Wynter’s Bite was great! I absolutely loved the flashback chapters of how Bethany and Justus came to meet and fall in love. It certainly wasn’t love at first sight, but once they got to talking, something sweet bloomed. They’re both bookworms! Sadly, Justus wasn’t allowed to marry her quite yet, which led to a series of unfortunate events starting with his arrest and her commitment. Back to the present and both of them are once again full of hope at being reunited, even though their journey down the aisle won’t be a simple one.

Wynter’s Bite also has an exciting historical road-trip as Bethany and Justus make their way across England to find a new home that will accept a rogue vampire and his human lover. They meet all kinds of characters and situations along the way. Nothing too dire, of course, since they have to get their happily ever after. Despite years of neglect and hopelessness, Bethany was a strong travel companion for Justus. She didn’t just let him take care of everything, and she does some rescuing herself!

I just really enjoyed Wynter’s Bite. Vampire are my absolute favorite, especially when they’re put into a historical setting rather than our modern world. Bethany and Justus’s love of books was super adorable and I hope they got the library of their dreams!

Justus de Wynter became a rogue vampire after he lost his love, but now he knows where she is - an asylum, where she has been locked up for 8 years, for claiming that her suitor was a vampire. Bethany Mead is happy to escape with Justus, but it's a case of frying pan to fire - rogue vampires are killed on sight and Justus needs permission to Change her. Can they possibly make a life together?

This might actually be my favourite book of the series, though it was entirely different from the usual blueprint and shouldn't have worked. But it did! Justus is such a great character - not only is he a reformed rake, but he's a reformed villain as well. I admittedly found him more interesting than the hero in the previous entry. I adored this Regency/vampire/road trip (lol) romance.

Wynter’s Bite is the fifth book and a wonderful addition to Brooklyn Ann’s Scandals with a Bite series. As with the other books in the series, this one includes familiar elements from the ones previous, but also has a uniquely different story to tell.

Justus and Bethany met at a house party and discovered that they both loved books. As they got to know each other, they fell in love. They made some mistakes and broke some rules resulting in Justus being banished as a rogue and Bethany committed to an asylum. (Apparently saying you’re marrying a vampire causes people to doubt your sanity.) Eight years later, they are reunited when Justus finds her and takes her from the asylum. The story follows their flight across England dodging patrols and rogues in an attempt to reach a place where they can be together and safe, perhaps with a quiet cottage and a library. How will their journey end? There’s only one way to find out. There are a few twists and we meet some interesting new characters.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.

It has been eight long years since Justus de Wynter fell in love with insipid bluestocking, Bethany Mead, and suffered the biggest downfall of his life. He was sentenced to exile as a rogue vampire for revealing to her what he really was and she was imprisoned in a mental institution because no one believed her. Now on the run, Bethany and Justus strive to overcome their past and find the love they once shared.

This was by far my least favorite book of the series. I did not like Bethany at all, she came off as a dimwitted character that I wanted no part of. I feel bad that that is who Justus lost his heart to and almost lost his life for.

Returns readers to the author’s captivating world of vampiric historic romance!

Bethany Mead cringed against the stone wall of her cell. Greeves was guarding the female ward this night. She hated Greeves…

Wynter’s Bite by Brooklyn Ann returns readers to the author’s captivating world of vampiric historic romance. I couldn’t be more thrilled as this entire series is seriously addictive! Now, before I go any further, I have to mention the fabulous cover which has a gothic feel to it and which is also an accurate depiction of the characters within.

You should also know that while Wynter’s Bite is the fifth installment in this series, it can be easily enjoyed as a stand-alone read, if that is your preference. There are characters from the previous books that play supporting roles in the story and fans of the series will relish catching up with them – but newbies should have no worries about ever being lost with the story.

Wynter’s Bite is the story of vampire Justus de Wynter, second in command to the Lord Vampire of Rochester, and mortal Bethany Mead, daughter of the Baron of Wickshire and a debutante in Rochester, England in 1812. In the author’s world of vampires, there are strict rules meant to prevent humans from finding out about the vampire world. Crossing those rules carries a penalty of death.

As the story opens, Bethany is being held against her will in the Morningside Asylum for Lunatics in Manchester, England in 1825. She is in dire straits desperately needing to be rescued. The whys and wherefores of how she ended up in the asylum is actually rooted in events that occurred eight years previous as the couple’s tragic love story unfolds....

Justus and Bethany are both well-written, realistic characters. They are easy to like and sympathize with. Justus is two hundred years older than Bethany with a reputation as a rake and blackguard. However, in reality, he is caring and loving. He has distinctive silken crimson red hair, russet brows, pearl-white skin and glittering brilliant green eyes and he fills the shoes of the hero quite nicely. In physical contrast, Bethany is adorable with golden curls and large blue eyes. I love how open she is with Justus. She tries to be proper as she was taught, but she just can’t help herself at times. I greatly appreciate how their shared love of books actually brought them together. Their common dream was to have a secure home together with a large library that they could immerse themselves in.

Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from Wynter’s Bite:

“I have always wondered what it is like to be kissed.” She snapped her mouth closed at such an outrageous confession, but it was too late.
“And?” he whispered back.
She frowned. “And what?”
His lips arched in a wicked smile. “How was the experience?”
“Incredible,” she couldn’t stop herself from answering. “So much more that what the novels depict.”
His grin broadened, tempting beyond reason. “That tempts me to do it again.”
---
“Justus?” she whispered. “I know it is not ladylike for me to ask, but I very much would for you to kiss me again.”
Those sensuous lips of his curved in a smile that made her belly flutter. “See, you are my counterpart, for I was just going to do just that.”
---
“God, you feel so good on top of me,” he whispered, rucking up her skirts to feel more of her silken skin.
“No, you feel good.” Her hips arched against his erection and she licked her lips. “Is it possible for us to…” she trailed off with a blush.
“Oh yes,” he whispered…

Wynter’s Bite is excellently written and perfectly paced. Join this couple as they embark on an often dire and lamentable, dangerous and passion-filled adventure. The possibility of a happy-ever-after ending certainly seemed to be a remote outcome. Will this couple get the library of their dreams? I highly recommend Wynter’s Bite to anyone who enjoys intriguing and steamy paranormal historical romance.

Ugh. I love Ann’s writing. I really do. With the way WYNTER’S BITE ended I’m wondering if this is the last of the series. Each book has set up the next book’s protagonist nicely and obviously. This one . . . it could be a couple different people. I’m wondering if the intent is to let the series lie with this one and if she decides to carry it on she at least has a couple options. Methinks that might be the case.

The one thing that stood out to me about WYNTER’S BITE against the other books was that the sexual tension wasn’t as fantastic here. I’ve always praised Ann’s ability to write panty-soaking tension with her character. She likes to build up, dangle a piece, and then take it away at least one or twice before the culmination actually happens. Here, though, the tension was subdued. I didn’t feel that squirmy anxiousness that I normally felt in the other books.

That could have to do with the character situations and pacing being vastly different from the previous books. In all the other books the female protagonist and love interest are new to each other. Here Justus and Bethany have known each other and he’s rescuing her. So we have some flashbacks to set up their meeting, flashing forward to the rescue, peril as they remain on the run, both for Bethany as an escaped lunatic and Justus, a rogue vampire, before they finally settle. So no surprise that in a book that deviates from the norm of the series it’s going to deviate in more than one way.

Just don’t think this is me saying that the book was bad. Not at all. It just stands out against the others and I wasn’t prepared for such a different take on the standard plot so it threw me a little bit. I still loved Justus’s development and Ann creates fantastic, strong female characters that fit the regency mold in their limitations but break clean out of it with their strong minds and strong wills. Ann uses women that would have otherwise been rejected from society and gives them life with other societal rejects in the vampires. I love it.

I do hope Ann keeps writing in the Scandals with Bite series, but if she is setting this one aside for now I would understand. She has plenty else for me to read, and I can always re-read some of my favorite books!

4.5

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

“Wynter’s Bite” by Brooklyn Ann broaches a dark period of history for women that few people know of and pulls no punches. Few women of the time managed to escape their fates in those houses of horror. Luckily for us, Brooklyn Ann not only makes sure that Bethany Mead, the heroine, escapes, but the heroine is saved by a handsome vampire who loves her.

Despite being brought up as a sheltered young woman, Bethany is not a wilting flower, but several years in an insane asylum change a person. She is close to breaking when Lord Justus de Wynter finds her and gets her out.

Once the second in command of a powerful vampire clan, Justus has become a rogue vampire since their last meeting. Constantly on the run and in danger of being killed by other vampire clans, he’s been searching for Bethany for years. When he finally finds her, it’s bittersweet. The beautiful woman he fell in love with is a shell of her former self. But, as he has already given up everything for her, he will save her from the hellhole her parents left her in.

Even with these dark overtones, the love story between Bethany and Justus is beautiful to see unfold. His patience and solicitude with her is even more appealing than his physical attraction. However understandable, she rightfully balks at his overprotectiveness and desires to be able to contribute to their escape. She eventually does much more than that.

I repeat, Bethany is no wilting flower. It is definitely part of her appeal to me as a heroine.

Eventually, these two star-crossed lovers find a more than satisfactory happily ever after. In the process, we meet other vampires whom we hope will also find their happily ever after and even learn that rogue vampires may not be the monsters they thought they were. (A stand alone series full of more star-crossed lovers who get a happily ever after? Really? Life doesn’t get any better.)

For those of you who enjoy historical romance mixed with paranormal and hot vampires, you will enjoy this fast-paced tale of betrayal and love by Brooklyn Ann.

Scandals With Bite Book 5
by Brooklyn Ann

Morningside Asylum for Lunatics
Manchester, England, May 1825

Bethany Mead is forced to find a husband...the one she chooses is not who her parents desire... Lord Justus de Wynter is intrigued by the new debutant but has no plans to marry... Fate brings them together only to tear them apart...will they find each other again and restore what they've lost?

Bethany fell in love with Justus at a young age. After she spills his biggest secret, her family send her to an asylum where she spends the next eight years. Justus finally finds her but only after he loses his standing in his circle. Danger surrounds them as they try to find a safe haven to live. She has many doubts but realizes that life with Justus is better than anything else. I enjoyed the ups and downs of this story and of meeting old friends from earlier stories in this series. I recommend this story.

"I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own."
Wynter's Bite is a wonderful historical, paranormal romance. I am a great fan of Brooklyn Ann's Hearts of Metal series, and now she has captivated me with her vampires. The book is well written and nicely paced.

Viscount Justus de Wynter is the second in command of the Rochester vampires, Bethany is a debutante entering her first season of marriage eligibility. They meet during a house party and immediately discover a common love of books. Both find the other attractive both physically and intellectually. A secret friendship is struck up, but when they decide on an engagement, fate intervenes and they are separated for the next 8 years.

This could have been a tragic love story, but Justus keeps faith and never gives up looking for his love. Their reunion is not the beginning of the life they once pictured together. Instead it's the beginning of an adventure full of danger and passion. He's a rogue and she's a fugitive. There's no where they are safe. Bethany proves that she is a strong woman during this time; one that is equal to the centuries old vampire. He is so caring, thoughtful, and loving towards Bethany; she is so determined and strong around him. They are both so passionate, but I love the fact that she's the instigator of their sexual encounters. They are both wonderful characters and a great couple. I read their trek for safety without pause. I couldn't put the book down until I knew if they got their HAE (and their library). Entertaining read.

Great book and great series! I have enjoyed every one of these books! I really like the vampire historical romance genre.

I enjoyed Bethany and Justice together. They made a great match. They had some great chemistry together a couple of nicely written sex scenes. Not erotica not rated G.

The story line and plot was good. I enjoyed the escape and the chase journey they took. There was a lot of great dialogue throughout the entire book. Lots of things going on and not full of unnecessary filler nonsense.

If you like vampires and historical romance you will love this series! I highly recommend it. Would love to see this series on audible for sure, with the right narrator of course.

I had trouble with the beginning but it was worth finishing.
