Simon Kernick (born 1966 in Slough, Berkshire) is a British thriller/crime writer now living in Oxfordshire with his wife and two daughters. He attended Gillotts School, a comprehensive in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. Whilst he was a student his jobs included fruitpicker and Christmas-tree uprooter. He graduated from Brighton Polytechnic in 1991 with a degree in humanities. Kernick had a passion for crime fiction writing from a young age and produced many short stories during his time at polytechnic. After graduating Kernick joined MMT Computing in London in early 1992, where a relative was the Chairman and Managing Director. Kernick was a key member of the sales team and was very highly regarded. However, he left the company after 4 years in the hope of trying to secure a publishing deal. Despite interest from a number of publishers Kernick was unable to secure a deal, so he joined the sales force of the specialist IT and Business Consultancy Metaskil plc in Aldermaston, Berkshire in 1998 where he remained until he secured his first book deal (The Business of Dying) in September 2001. His novel Relentless was recommended on Richard & Judy's Summer book club 2007. It was the 8th best-selling paperback, and the best-selling thriller in the UK in the same year
Author Simon Kernick really does deserve more recognition as an accomplished thriller writer. I find his writing consistently good with strong characters, well thought out plots and excellently paced stories. I have read some of his short stories before and surprised by how much he manages to get in so few pages. This one is no different, short but well written and entertaining. A man and woman meet in the Caribbean and after sharing drinks and a meal on the mans yacht it becomes evident that neither of them are who they seem to be. This book is a good insight into the writing of Simon Kernick, an author who deserves more plaudits.
Always hard to review and give stars to a book that is only 44 pages long.
But I always know, with Simon Kernick, you will be teased and ready for his next book.
And this short story does just that. It builds up a nice character and story, ready to start a new series of books from Simon Kernick. A quick but fast paced plot the end of this really gets you ready for the next full story with a new lead character Ray Mason.
I say, a new series it is, but good to know that a great long running character is coming back, yes Tina Boyd, now a PI.
Omg...noooo,talk about ending on a cliff hanger, that really is soooo unfair.
A man and woman strike up a conversation at a beach bar in the Caribbean. After sharing a drink the man invites the woman to have a meal later that evening on his yacht.
Neither of them is who they seem and by the end of the night only one of them is still alive
There is only 44 pages in this book, the chapters alternate between him and her and it is voiced in the first and third person. It is written in short punchy chapters and packed with twists including one major jaw dropping twist at the end.It is hard to say too much about the two characters without giving away spoilers but one of them is definitely not a very nice person.
You can always rely on Simon Kernick books to have very intreguing, gripping plots that keep the reader guessing and this brilliant short story is no exception.
The book also includes the first chapter from Simon Kernick`s newest thriller The Bone Field which is published on the 17th of January 2017.I had the honour of being sent a proof copy,it is a absolutely brilliant action packed thrill ride that is guaranteed to please his army of loyal readers.
I really liked the beginning of this and the style of writing but it ended very abruptly and is more an introduction to a character than a short story. It was good though and had a conclusion...I just wanted more...but that's the idea of an introduction! I would like to read more from this author :)
Flytrap was another addictive short story from Simon Kernick, one that hooked me right away. Although I worked out where things were going very quickly, I still had a lot of fun watching the specifics of how everything came together.
Although a quick read, there was plenty packed into this story that will keep you hooked. In truth, this was more of a three-point-five-star rating, but I opted to round down as there were certain elements of the story where I would have liked a wee bit more.
Without a doubt, it’s worth reading for anyone looking for a quick thrill.
Truly a short story, but I liked it. Would like to read about the surviving character in this story. Plenty of potential with that character, especially with Simon as the author.
Great plot, well-written, a couple of twists but brings new meaning even to the phrase 'short story'!! It took me about 10 minutes to read and finished at 47%, with the rest of the file being a preview of the new book. It was good but it's an abrupt ending and I'm glad it was a freebie.
I loved this short story, even though it was short there were many twists and it ended on a serious cliffhanger. I would absolutely love for this to be continued.
I was looking for something to get my teeth into just before I started another large novel, this was perfect. I was very quickly transported to the Caribbean, to a beach bar, where we meet our characters of the book. Although it is a short story, I really liked the format of the chapter changes entitles him and her. This is a fast paced thriller and Kernick really added a lot into it.
I really enjoyed this short story and after reading this I would be tempted to pick up a full length novel by Kernick, the best thing about this was it is currently on kindle for free. This can allow you to check out his writing style before you commit. If you are anything like me though you will race through it and go searching for his full length novels.
I felt a real anticlimax when I finished this novella. I had already read The Bone Field and I cannot think what about the book relates to the pointless, thoroughly predictable Flytrap. I'm disappointed that Simon Kernick released such a pointless book, 50% of which was a taster for The Bone Field.
Once again another great book(though short) from a great author
Having read all of Simon's previous books and looking forward to more, it was great to read this book. I know it's a very short story, but great read. Now starting Field of Bones.
Strange effort this one. It was short in the first place and then stopped abruptly after an indecent amount of time. The rest of the Kindle edition was made up of a "now read" thing. I wouldn't bother, even if it was free.
Does exactly what it says on the tin - it's a decent little story in the thriller genre. Although it's pretty obvious where it's going, it still made me nearly missed my bus stop!
A good short story , infact very short but at 49pence I suppose that was to be expected , I have a feeling we have met the female character in this book in a recent Kernick novel . This e-books main job is to introduce the new novel from Kernick as a good percentage of the book is taken over by the first chapter of the new novel. The book is therefore more a marketing exercise than anything else. That said the new novel based on the first chapter looks like it could be one of Kernick's best yet.
A great short story that I wish had been a bit longer but even though it’s only 40 odd pages, it had me hooked which I think is the skill of the author who, I admit, I am a big fan of.
This short story was good, if some what, rather predicable. However, that didn't take away from the enjoyment I got out of it and the way it ended seems as if it will possibly continue in another book.. Which I will look out for!
