Mara Duport has always dreamed of home, a place where she belongs. She knows that she has one, but ever since she was a kid, her dad’s been keeping the secret of her origin locked away, refusing to give her any information.
Dad’s been keeping more than one secret. He’s in debt — a lot of debt — and the ruthless pirates he borrowed the money from are coming to collect.
The pirate captain is renowned the galaxy over for his brutishness and cruelty — but when Mara sees his stoic face, her heart races, her mouth goes dry… and she offers herself as payment.
Space Beast
Torak of Basniel has a fierce, uncaring, ruthless reputation to live up to. So when a beautiful, innocent woman offers herself up to him on a platter, Torak doesn’t think twice. What does he care about stealing away this man’s precious daughter?
But Torak gets a more than he’s bargained for. Mara’s more than just innocent — she’s also intelligent, skilled, beautiful — and she can see right through him, past the thorny exterior, down to the heart he thought died long ago.
Being vulnerable was never part of the plan. Love was never part of the plan.
Torak knows he’s an irredeemable monster, but with Mara he feels different. He sees the opportunity to be more than what’s always been expected.
Mara knows that there’s something beautiful and redeemable inside Torak, and she won’t leave him until he finds it.
Not until she can tame the beast.
Beauty and the Space Beast is 50,000 words of exciting, page-turning, romance with strong themes of self-discovery and adventure. This book contains NO harsh language, explicit violence, or graphic romance scenes. It is an adult romance, but is suitable for older YAs as well. I hope you enjoy!

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it
Beauty and the Space Beast was a fun read and I would definitely recommend it to people looking for a fun sci-fi fairytale retelling. I did a have a lot of small issues with things that happened, I won't go into too much details, but it reduced my enjoyment of the book a bit. I think that some topics could've used a bit more depth, some things happened a bit fast and some topics could've used a bit more expanding. Like the topic about Mara her homeworld, it was an interesting plot line, but I felt by the end it got solved a bit too easily almost, although I did think the twist surrounding that was interesting.
I felt like the fairytale retelling aspect was a bit more subtle than in the first book, but that could also be because I am less familiar with the Beauty and the Beast story. Although there were a few times where it felt the characters acted a certain way because they had to fit the pattern of the story instead of it really feeling natural, but that might be just me. The sci-fi setting gave a bit of a different feel to the story than than the original story and it wasn't as easy to figure out who in this book was which character from the original story.
This book follows Torak and Mara. Torak is a Basniel alien and the the beast part refers not to his appearance, but more to the reputation the sons of Basniel have. They are brutal and evil. Torak acts that was as well, because why act differently if everyone expects him to act in such a way anyway. But even with his reputation of being mean and evil I thought he didn't really act all that evil in this book. That's probably to make him more likeable, but I would've liked to see a bit more of his ruthless side before, so that his change would've felt like a bigger deal. I thought he acted pretty nice most of the book and even at the start of the book when he takes Mara as payment, he's just collecting debt. He doubts himself and if he's worthy of love and such, but at the same time he has this super loyal crew around him that already should've proved that part. But he doesn't have enough hope to be different and actually try until he meets Mara.
Mara always wanted to travel and see more of the galaxy, but her old father needs her so she never strays far from home. She knows her father keeps some secrets from her, which bothers her. Then when Torak comes collect a debt her father own him, she volunteers to serve on his ship as payment, which gives her the chance to finally follow her dreams or exploring. I liked seeing how the characters change throughout the story and found out new things about themselves. Their romance developed quite fast, but I still liked how the author took some time to see them getting to know each other. There are some sweet scenes between them when they get to know each other. I didn't much care for the conflict and miscommunication, but I guess it made sense they had to work through a few things.
I would've liked to see a bit more of the world building as it's pretty light on the sci-fi aspect, world building and descriptions. The focus is more on the story it's telling than on making the world come alive. Which is okay, but I would've liked to get to know a bit more about the galaxy. Or who was an alien and what type, what they looked like, what the different cultures were like or even what Mara looked like besides her hair color. Half of the time I even forgot some of these were aliens. A few of the sci-fi details felt a bit off to me, that's not to say it's not realistic as I don't have too much knowledge about that either and who knows what space travel really will be like, but it didn't fit the image I had from other sci-fi books and tv series. Just few parts that seemed slightly unrealistic or off to me.
To summarize: This is a fun story and I enjoyed reading it. It's pretty story focused and gave a new twist on the Beauty and the Beats fairytale. It is a fairly short read and I did think some parts lacked a bit of depth because of that or topics that could've been expanded upon a bit more. The retelling parts felt a bit more subtle in this book, but that also could be due to me being less familiar with the Beauty and the Beast story. I did like the romance even though it developed a bit quickly, there were some sweet scenes between them and I did like that the author took a bit of time to show them getting to know each other. The book is pretty light on the sci-fi and I would've liked to see the world come alive a bit. A few sci-fi details felt a bit off or unrealistic to me. Overall this was an enjoyable story, despite the many small issues I had with it and I am looking forward to the next book!
This was a disaster... I just can't... Short and tasteless... 1.5 Stars Maybe I'm being too harsh? Well, I guess its just the way it is. I feel frustrated and angry. Characters are one-dimensional and the secondary characters are more interesting. The pace is rushed yet the romance isn't. The story itself doesn't outshine the original one and it's a poor re-telling if you ask me. Beauty & the Beast gone sci-fi... Mara offers herself to a pirate in exchange for her father's debt and learns that her captor isn't evil nor are his crew. She's attracted to the captain but can't figure him out. Mara is annoying and a very stupid girl. Not a woman or a tough heroine from my point of view... Torak is just a guy trying to prove that no matter his race or his origins, he's a person. Someone in his own way trying to survive. Maybe not in a legal way but certainly not in an evil way either. I truly tried to like this and get immersed. I just kept sighing heavily through the whole thing and not in a good way. Not only is it not entertaining and boring. But it has nothing new to offer. It's just a cheesy romance with a hint of sci-fi elements and very poor narration.
Beauty and the Space Beast is a sci-fi romance re-telling of the classic fairytale Beauty and the Beast that was enjoyable from start to finish.
Torak of Basniel is the space pirate captain of the ship the Queen's Affliction, with a reputation to be feared. However, when his trustworthiness of being against the Queen is being question, he realizes he has to remind everyone why he is to be feared.
Mara Duport has always dreamed of a home. Living with her father on their broken down ship, doing runs and living on their asteroid, it was quiet with just two of them. She wants more, an adventure, and to finally find out where she came from.
Soon, Mara gets more of an adventure than she'd ever dreamed in the form of Torak and his crew. When Torak comes calling demanding payment from her father for a debt he owes, Mara offers herself in her father's place. Once on the Queen's Affliction, the story truly takes off.
I really liked JM Page's re-telling of Beauty and the Beast. She did a great job making the characters stand out in their personalities. Mara's bravery and determination to be useful on the ship once she's there. Torak's fierceness, but also his vulnerable side especially where Mara is concerned. I also adored the supporting characters of Sande and Delta, who brought humor into the mix as well. Besides characters, I liked that Ms. Page added enough action mixed with the romance to keep the story moving at a fast and easy pace.
Overall, Beauty and the Space Beast by JM Page was a great romance that satisfied my need for a fun and entertaining story. I happily recommend.
There’s so much character waffling in this book, all I need is some syrup and orange juice to make it a breakfast of chumps. “She could never looove meeee!” “He’s not who I thought he waaaaas!” Cue copious brooding, stupid misunderstandings, and self-loathing. I think we get to see the main love interests happy together for all of two chapters. Guess what? That’s about 10% of the book. Aaaand not much happens outside of the internal drama-fest. We get a few pages of battle, a few pages of kidnapping, a few pages of mysterious illness, and chapters of internal negative monologuing. I’m in dire need of bacon now. Bacon gets 5 stars. This book does not.
I picked up this book because I'm enamored with anything Beauty and the Beast, but I'll admit to not expecting much from such a silly premise. Think Joss Whedon's Firefly combined with Beauty and the Beast and you'll have a pretty good idea of what this book is like. The adventure and danger of space pirates and the romance and happy endings of fairy tales. It's a surprisingly good combination.
This is a completely different approach to the story. Focus is shifted from the physical appearance of the "Beast" to his transformation as a person. Captain Torak is a descendant of the infamous people of Basniel and has given up trying to be different, in other words a good person. Regardless of how his innate goodness prevails at times, he is oblivious to it until he meets Mara, a daughter of a man who owes him a debt, and who agrees to work on the ship to pay it off. I have had some mixed feelings about this story for two reasons. Firstly, Mara's father strikes me as an utter ignorant fool, keeping his daughter practically sequestered on a small asteroid, keeping secrets and not giving her any information, borrowing large sums of money and thinking that he is not obligated to return it, all to protect Mara. However, he keeps Mara completely ignorant and away from any human contact or information. Obviously, a very annoying character. Secondly, there is Mara, who starts quite open-minded and then for a while converts into an incredibly judgemental person, for no reason whatsoever. Fortunately, she comes to her senses towards the end. The encounter between Torak and Mara and the development of their relationship is quite interesting, but maybe a bit rushed towards the end of the book. Or maybe I just liked them so much I wanted to read a bout them a bit longer. In this book, as well as the next one, the focus is on the strong female character who can take care of herself. She is independent, smart and a mechanical engineer. I loved it! There were some moments in the book where her genius engineering skills shine like a star. It was a pleasure to read. This is the second book in the series, but it reads perfectly well as a standalone. The Star-Crossed Tales books were published in the following order: The Prince and the Cyborg (Star-Crossed Tales #1, later re-published as sixth book The Little Cyborg), Beauty and the Space Beast (Star-Crossed Tales #2), Alien Frog Prince (Star-Crossed Tales, #3), Cinderstellar (Star-Crossed Tales #4), Lady and the Space Tramp (Star-Crossed Tales #5), The Little Cyborg (Star-Crossed Tales #6, which is the first story The Prince and The Cyborg re-published), and Planet Neverland. I hope there will be more.
This is my first book by this author and it definitely won't be the last. I enjoyed the world she built and the way she let you learn about the characters! She had me rooting for them to get the happy endings they so deserved! I will definitely look for more books by this author to read and enjoy.
Absolutely adored this book. Fantasy was always a far fetched thought, until I read this book. It was so real and imaginative that I could be in the story with the characters. Love always conquers without negativity drowning the spark
I believe this would be a Y/A read. I was excited to start reading this, since I love beauty & the beast retellings & it has a fairly high star rating, but I am a bit underwhelmed after reading it. This was an ok space alien -beauty & the beast retelling. The story felt a bit condensed, with a little more background & world building, may have helped to pull in this reader a bit more. I was left with a lot of unanswered questions to things that didn't make sense in the story. The characters never really came to life for me enough to care about them either. It felt stiff & forced. It also felt like they were labeled wrong, I never really felt like Torak was the "beast", even though it was repetitively- ad nauseam- ground in that where he's from makes him a horrible monster to be feared. But Mara just came across as self absorbed & thoughtless with no regard for anyone else's feelings -a b!tch of a beast if you ask me. I really never felt the emotional connection between the hero/heroine either, one dinner date with kisses & him hearing her laughter on the ship or seeing her across a room does not make a love story-romance. I also would rather of had a longer story than to get the second bonus book (the Prince & the Cyborg) that didn't sound intriguing enough for me want to read.
It was ok. It took me less than 2 hours to read. I got my copy through Kindle Unlimited and it had another story after it. Something like The Cyborg and the Prince? I didn’t read that story. It was enjoyable enough as brain candy, a mindless read. I felt the ending was rather abrupt. All this build up and then suddenly we are at the epilogue. Perhaps this was partly because of the second story throwing off the percentage read indicator, but it still felt very sudden. I do kinda agree with the comment about Mara being so obtuse, for that matter so was Torak. The problems between them seemed very contrived to create the story. I realize romances usually have some sort of problem between the couple before their happily ever after, but these problems did not feel integral to the story. It felt more like hmmm what kind of misunderstandings can I throw them into?
As an aside, does anyone wonder if she took Torak’s name from the crazy god in David & Leigh Eddings Belgariad and Mallorean fantasy series? It’s just such an unusual name it would be really amazing if both authors created the same name. And I mean amazing in a good way. I’m fine with her taking the name from that series if she did, I love those books.
This book I didn't like I considered abandoning it a number of times but I liked the idea of it. A beauty and the beast inspired story but set in space. Torak is the "Beast" in nature alone not in looks. He's suppose to be this bad arse who strikes fear in tgebpeople who cross him because of his race and where he comes from. He didn't seem very bad arse to me but we were told how brutal and fearsome he was we weren't shown.
The romance within this book happened very quickly by about 25 to 30% of the book they were already an item which at the time I felt happened very quickly but then the book ended at 55% the rest of it is an excerpt from another book I didn't want to read. There wasn't any chemistry between Torak and Mara so there courtship and togetherness was pretty boring to read about.
I definitely won't be reading the rest of the series. I'm glad it was as short as it was actually if it was twice as long as it was I probably would have given up but at least I have finished it now.
“Space Beast” only thinks he’s a beast because of how he’s internalized racial prejudices against his people. This could have been the basis for a very interesting conversation on the effects of internalized racism, but it wasn’t. It was an insta-love story with a side of immaturity & unnecessary misunderstandings and a deficiency of world building.
But also, Beast going to a strip club with the intentions of banging some performers to cool off after getting in an argument with Beauty? 😐 no thank you
I won’t be reading any more of the books in this series. I love sci fi and fairy tale retellings. The Lunar Chronicles is one of my favorite series and may have ruined all other sci fi fairy tales for me.
So Mara offers herself as part of Torak's crew in place of her father. Mostly, because she has been wanting to travel and thinks the captain is hot...and a teeny part of her wants her father to be spared. Even though she hasn't been anywhere and only knows her father she acts very smug and insists that she can be an asset. But instead of sitting with the captain and finding out where she could be useful, she assumes he means to use her as a concubine or something and storms off. Even though he gave no signs of thinking of her that way, she jumped to that conclusion. Mara was just too annoying for me to continue on.
What a waste of good idea. I was interested in the story till chapter 7 then it turn to a big disappointment. Torak is a fierce, uncaring, ruthless beast and everybody fears him. I was fascinated by him and I wanted to know more but suddenly he fell in love with Mara. I think here the story became a huge failure. Torak turn to a weak and lost person. He didn't know how to woo a girl, he asked some of his crew what to do, what to say and this made him look stupid and silly. This fierce and self confident hero lost what made the story special.
I always enjoy a twist on the fairytale classics. I thought this was a nice weekend read but that it ended kinda suddenly, they go from (SPOILER) sick to diagnosis to treatment to epilogue in the last 30 pages... After building the story so gradually it was quite the shock to have it done out of the blue. A little bit of dispair, uncertainty, will she or won't she make it would have been welcome.
This book was the first book I read form this author; and the truth is, I have to say I was expecting something different, do not get me wrong, it is a nice story, sweet and romantic. This is the type of book you can read to your 10 year old and I like my books with more adult content, if you know what I mean.
I really wanted to love this book...... but i just couldn't. Torak i liked up until the end. Mara as so annoying. GOD pirates took your from your dad and your thinking about how they can help you find where you came from. SHE HAS NO COMMON SENSE!!!!!!!! And that is just one of many things she did wrong. Don't read this book your would be wasting your time.
Had to do lots of skimming as my irritation at the teenaged behavior and sense of entitlement of the heroine who was well beyond teen years. So much self pity and mean words to others I barely finished. Other characters had sense and adult behavior which kept me from giving this two stars.
I found the Beast of this tale to be less a beast (no matter his reputation in the space around his planet) and more of someone with significant social interaction challenges. Mara has the most amazing ability to skewer Torak's severe attitudes and menacing glares just by being herself. This opposites-attract tale inspires as much snickering as it does sighs.
For what I figured would be a bad, cheesy romance novel I could pass time with on the plane, it was really good. I liked the plot and actually found myself wanting more. Character arcs could be better. But it's a cheesy romance novel... So it's good
Thus far, there is nothing exciting enough in this sample to make me want to purchase the book. It is uninspiring in a plot that seems to have little planning. In fact, the flow is rather elementary and covers a lot of ground without really saying anything.
Why have the heroines lately been so whiney and immature, Mara was supposed to be 24 but acted like she was 16 ,demanding then oh I'm so sorry then throwing a fit again . I liked Torak but felt bad for him
Beauty and the Space Beast fell a little flat for me. It had a lot of potential, but didn't really go anywhere. There seemed to be a lot of hesitation in the character development, but in the end, not too exciting.
THE CHARACTERS DIDNT EVEN HAD THE CHANCE TO DEVELOP A PROPER RELATIONSHIP AND THEY WERE ALREADY TERRIBLE AT IT! THE HERO kept jumping to conclusions and being just a jerk and the HEROINE was weak and often second guessed herself.
Mara and Torak A retelling of Beauty and the Beast in Star-Crossed Fairytales. is a clean slow burn from mistrust and disdain to seeing the real person within and not just rumors. A good story. so read this one
I really enjoyed this story. The characters and the story plot were really fascinating. I like the twist the author put on a timeless classic. I am looking forward to reading more of the series.
