Shade #2
Shade and the Skinwalkers
Semi-Finalist, Young Adult category, 2019 Kindle Book Awards.
As if being a ghost whisperer in a trailer park isn’t weird enough, skinwalkers take things to a whole new level of strange.
Running away from her demons rather than facing them, Shade’s mother moves them once again to a new place—this time a trailer park on the outskirts of Roswell, New Mexico. Hiding in plain sight among UFO festivals and rumors of alien abductions, paranormal creatures live there by their own rules.
Shade accepts her destiny as a ghost whisperer with the help of her new best friend, Kai Zahnii. An empath and healer with the potential to become a Navajo shaman, Kai must break free of her dysfunctional family. This dysfunction goes far beyond anything Shade has ever known. Kai is all too familiar with skinwalkers, shapeshifter witches who violate taboos in order to practice pure evil. In the Wild West atmosphere of her new town, Shade is thrown into a world inhabited not only by ghosts, but also by witches, faeries and shapeshifters. She must find the courage to fight the skinwalkers alongside her new best friend and creatures she never knew existed.
SHADE AND THE SKINWALKERS is Book #2 in a YA Paranormal Mystery / YA Urban Fantasy series.

I love Marilyn Peake’s stories, so when I went to the mailbox and found Shade and The Skinwalkers, I could hardly wait to begin reading. I love young adult paranormal and supernatural stories and Marilyn never lets me down.
Shade’s first night in her new home in a trailer park in New Mexico, she meets Kai, who will become her new best friend. They both have special abilities and they will need them.
Shade is very familiar with ghosts…so what comes next?
Her other best friend Misty is still missing (from the first book, Shade) and she can’t let it go. Now, she has a new mystery to solve, a serial killer who must be stopped.
Shapeshifters good. Skinwalkers bad. We have kidnapping, human trafficking, sex slavery, murder, ghosts, Native American culture, mysticism…so much going on that I was never left wanting for something else to happen, some new threat to raise its evil and ugly head.
We hop from fantasy to reality and back again.
I love flawed characters, struggling through life, trying to do the right thing. It is so much fun watching them grow into the people they are meant to be.
Shade has an awesome group of friends and a new bestie. I can hardly wait to see how that plays out, as they head off to college. The characters are amazing and lovable, and Shade’s mom…well don’t want to spoil anything…So I will be looking for more adventure in the next book of the series.

Shade's mom ran again, this time to a mystery area near Roswell New Mexico, home of space alien tourism and plenty of supernatural types. Shade's new next door neighbor in the trailer park turns out to be psychic too, a Navajo girl named Kai (sorry but my Finnish dad was named that; it's wacky for me) and her family is stranger still. But soon they are the targets of the local evil Skin-Walkers.
But there's good news too; her best friend from book 1, Annie, had been rescued from human trafficking and is recovering in a sanitarium nearby. Shade and Kai get to visit, and help her to heal. Shade's mom, too. Now it's up to Shade to get to know her brand new reborn mother and accept her! Tall order, especially as she and her new gang at the school newspaper have to thwart a murder spree by the Skin-Walkers, some of whom are teaching high school! EWWWW.
Luckily the hangovers from hippie times had plenty of off-beat names for their kids of Shade's age, so it's easier than usual to make allies at school. I had no trouble believing in all these characters.
The only quibble I had was when somehow Shade's mom couldn't remember how to cook for Thanksgiving, when in volume 1 she pulled off the entire thing very easily, and Shade even made the biscuits and a jello mold for it. I guess for those who skipped volume 1 it would matter less than the comic interludes in the trailer park kitchen are worth, plus playing up the feels.
Still, I am gamely going on to the next book because we'll be in one of those trendy new 'magic academy' tropes for it. Let's see where Peake steers us.

I really enjoyed this book too.
Marilyn Peake certainly knows how to write a great story. These books are aimed at the Young Adult market but are more than suitable for older people too (that ship sailed many years ago) ;-)
Carrying on from where the first book ended, Shade faces brand new challenges in a whole new location. The locality, the ancient customs / beliefs and the overlap from book 1 all come together to create another story that is both quite bleak in parts but also balanced by incredibly warm sections too.
As previously, there are elements of humour that are laugh out loud in places from a quick comment / observation that lighten the mood.
There is one section towards the end of this book that disappointed me. Without spoiling a part of the story it's hard to explain why, but a major event is updated without detailing what happened - something that I would have liked to have read over a couple of chapters. This aside, this was still a good read and I'm looking forward to book 3.
It's nice to see that an author who wrote a really graphic set of books (Mutation Z, the Ebola Zombies), can write some dark Urban Fantasy (The Shade series), and also dabble in Science Fiction (The Other) - just to name a few of the great works on offer.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
*Spoilers ahead*
So far the Shade series has been very compelling. I love Shade's new friend, Kai. She is an empath and possible shaman from the Navajo tribe. The delineation between Skinwalkers and Shapeshifters is really interesting. Kind of the light and dark side of a similar group of people. The location, outside Roswell, is awesome. It's great how everything is about aliens.
My reason for not giving 5 stars comes down to editing. There are some continuity problems from book 1 to 2, specifically as regards Thanksgiving. It wouldn't have bothered me as much if so much page space hadn't been dedicated to Thanksgiving dinner. The other editing issue is that some scenes/information are repeated. For example, in one chapter, Shade tells her new newspaper crew about psychic Gabriella. A few chapters later, she is again explaining about Gabriella to the same people and they are acting like it's new information. There are several instances of this in the book. I'm sure it could have been a good twenty pages shorter if these duplications were left out.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and the amping up of the supernatural. Just wish we could have seen one of the fairies that were talked about.

“Apparently, it was opposite day because that’s the exact opposite of how I was feeling” is an example of all the phrases I just loved to dwell on. The story was so smart I wanted to enjoy the prose as much as the plot. You don’t see that often in a novel, and it reminds me of a Patricia McKillip novel...destined to be savored years after.
SInce I have never visited Roslyn and ground zero for alien abduction theories, I was enraptured by the description of the poverty in school overlaid by monthly festivals (aka Tourist Traps). That alone exaggerated our world into a caricature of modern life.
But I failed to finish the novel because I expect a faster pacing and more paranormal sooner. Gory descriptions of bagged teeth aside, great prose and worth a book award aside, I need a faster pace.
If you are tired of the same old trash novels but still enjoy a quirky paranormal take on crime novels, this is definitely an interesting read.

The second book in the series did not disappoint. I received this book free the only thing that was asked of me in return was an honest review. Heat scale was a zero, and violence was moderate. World-building is exceptionally well done, and very descriptive just incredible. Characters were very well developed you came to care about these characters as if they were members of your family or friends, and both the storyline and plot line were intricate and well-thought-out. Shade is at it again she is solving Mysteries and helping ghosts to move on in the afterlife. There are twists and turns unexpected events that keep you guessing all the way to the end. I highly recommend this book it was a fascinating read, and kept me turning the pages. I just love these kind of books that draw you in and keep you until the very end continuing to be fascinated and interested in the story line. You won't be disappointed by this story.

The world is full of secrets, that Shade learned. Her journalist investigations, her friends’ experiences and the Supernatural world became an asset to open her eyes to a new reality. She was afraid but decided to uncover the truth and help those who needed her help. A true heroine! Enjoyed this second book that kept me intrigued with the interesting plot development. Shade’s character, a ghost whispered, it’s becoming stronger each time. This YA Paranormal story has mystery, suspense, intriguing secondary characters, detailed narrations and descriptions and fantasy. I liked this second book that I received from Story Origins

Shade and the Skinwalkers
Great Book. Shade found out that there was more in this world than ghosts. I loved Khia. I felt bad for her to with how she was raised. It was great that they figured out about the little girl ghost and the others even though Shade didn't want any credit. Khia's powers are awesome. It was great that she healed Anne and Shade's mom. Shade never gave up on looking for Misty. She even started a school paper online with fellow classmates to help look for her and with their knowledge, they found the general location she was in by texts they were receiving on the newspaper online.

To me, the best kind of urban fantasy / paranormal story is one that introduces novel types of magic, has a fully satisfying adventure, but is somehow grounded in reality. Shade and the Skinwalkers achieves this. The characters are superb and they and the settings they're in feel realistic. The paranormal / fantasy elements are very (very) well done but at the same time thx eltmfbrs that gave nothing to do with paranormal / fantasy work extremely well too. All in a totally fun story that's extremely well crafted.

Galactic Shade Griffin is back and now she has more paranormal to deal with than just ghosts. There are shapeshifters and their evil counterparts the skinwalkers. This time Shade is a senior in high school, and has to deal with moving to a new state. She still uses writing as an outlet. The story is original and had me guessing. If it weren't so late I would crack open book 3. As for that I'll just put it on my list of things to do tomorrow. I got this book through storyorigins and this is my voluntary and honest review.

This is the 2nd book in the Shade Paranormal Mystery series and I absolutely loved it. Shade and her mother move to Roswell New Mexico to live in a trailer park. Shade keeps looking for the girls that went missing while trying to deal with a new school, this book also deals with alcoholism which is really sad but a fact of life. I loved this book the characters and the storyline are great and I highly recommend this book.

Shade And The Skinwalkers (Shade Series, #2), my second read from author Marilyn Peake. Enjoyable, tightly woven & well-written but I'm not sure it measures up to the standards of Shade (Shade Series, #1). “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and I'm voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Now I need to read Shade And The Den of Lost Souls (Shade Series, #2 1/2). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Shade round 2. Shade and her mother are moving again. But oh so exciting, first she could talk to ghosts and now fairies, shifters and skinwalkers. Oh my gosh I think this book may be better thank the 1st one. Now I can't wait to read book 3. Shade and friends never leave you bored. I recommend.

Shade and the Skinwalkers
by Marilyn Peake
This book was a review copy from 2020. I bought and read the first book and was disappointed in the portrayal of the teen culture. Thus I didn't leave a review as I hate to be negative. I started this second book in the series and couldn't finish. Other reviews have been mixed.

Why I Have The 3 Rating
I really like the plot and characters. But, I am left with questions. How do you move with the mother not having a job and being drunk or drugged up? How did the rent get paid when the mother had no job? How did the mother but food? Left me hanging

Shade is a ghost whisperer, she can speak to ghosts. Add fairies, shapeshifters, and skinwalkers and the action never stops. Well written, with great characters and plot.
I received a complimentary copy and freely give my honest review.

Shade 2
Total Score: 4/5
Summary:
Once again, Shade's Mom uprooted and moved them to of all places Roswell, New Mexico home of the UFO fanatics adding all that craziness to her world. All shade wants is to try and live a normal life, but she quickly meets Kai who embroils Shade into helping ghost. Now on top of hearing ghosts Shade has to deal with shapeshifters, witches, skinwalkers while still trying to find and rescue Misty her missing friend. Between finding her way in a new school, joining the school newspaper where they build an online newspaper and website. With the help of her own school together they may find a way to rescue Misty in spite of the danger.
This book took off from the very beginning with many unexpected plot twists. The various unique characters took a life of their own. While I really enjoyed the story, it seemed to end kind of abruptly leaving this reader wondering what happened next. If the author had just ended it more gradually it would have been perfect. In spite of that I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next book in the Shade series.

Aliens, Skin-walkers and college applications
Four stars for shade and the skin walkers by Marilyn Peake
Genre: Fantasy, Mystery, Coming of age, Paranormal, Drama
Audience: YA, NA, Adults
This is the second book in the Shade paranormal mystery novels. Shades mother moves them again, and this time to a trailer park outside Roswell New Mexico. Yet again, Shade has to deal with a new school, new friends, and a new city. Shade quickly gets involved in the war between the local shape shifters and Skin walkers, while juggling school and Alien abductions. Shade also finds the time and energy to keep looking for the last of the girls who went missing in the last book. This is a another good young adult mystery that is hard to put down once started. I loved the descriptions of life in a trailer park combined with the twist of added supernatural characters. It's a really well written young adult mystery that would warmly recommend to others.

While I looked very carefully, there was no suggestion in the Amazon write-up that this was written for teenagers. I'm glad that teens have something to read. I just have prefer to avoid such books. Not only was the story revolving around teens, but the writing was rather immature. Couldn't finish it.

Fabulous Book
I love this series. The characters are real, but in a paranormal setting. Anyone who is over the age of twelve will love this series if they like paranormal books.
Ms Peake has done a great job with writing the characters and background. You feel like you are there, right along with Shade and her friends.
She touches on real life problems that teens have, but in such an entertaining way that you don't realize that you just might be learning something worthwhile.
I Highly Recommend This Series.
