Just the Way You Are

Rate this book
Single mom, Eisley Barrett, prefers to keep romance safely housed within a centuries-old mystery, but when she travels to England to unearth the secret, an actor with a sordid past offers her reluctant heart a very different type of discovery.

Wes Harrison has a past he’s ashamed to confess. Suspicious and cynical, he’s managed to avoid romantic entanglements since a tragedy upended his career and life, that is until American Eisley Barrett comes along. I am definitely the oddball here with my thoughts on this book. I did like it, but when I compare it to the other two novels by Basham that I've read, it just doesn't do it for me. It was all just a bit much. I don't care for romances that move really fast, and the one here definitely does. Some things just seemed really over the top and dramatic for me. It is a sweet, cute story, but it lacked a lot of depth (again, in comparison to her two Mitchell's Crossroads books). There's a lot of romantic gushing, and maybe I'm just not in the mood for it right now.

I wish that the search for Eisley's ancestors would have been more a part of the story. It all happens very easily and quickly, and perhaps it would happen that way in real life, but I wanted more. The vixen out to get Wes came across as over the top and corny (sorry, y'all!), and the way that whole story line played out felt predictable to me. Eisley herself is endearing but almost too endearing...she doesn't realize she's beautiful, talented, etc. Basham's written much more complex characters than this one, and I felt the lack here.

I enjoyed the culture clashing of a Brit and a gal from Appalachia. I love that she is a mom and also thought that the kids are portrayed rather well - they seem real, which seems hard for authors to get right sometimes in terms of dialogue. The ending is adorable, and I loved the airport scene. It's sweet how Eisley's family rallies around her, and I look forward to reading more about them.

I really am baffled that I didn't like this one more. Most of my friends gave this one 4 and 5 stars. I'm going to assume it was a fluke and definitely plan on reading book two about Eisley's sister.

I really thought I would enjoy this book more, but even with its quirky Appalachian and swoony British main characters, I had a difficult time connecting to them. I felt thrown into the story and wished for more of a setup to draw my interest to the plot. I was distracted by the alternate gushing and angsting of Eisley over Wes, and even though their kissing scenes were amazing, I felt like there was something missing. I think it would have helped to see more of their friendship developing early on, instead of being told about it. I did appreciate the way they shared their faith and even studied the Bible together. Eisley very much identifies as Appalachian, and the constant references to her personality and the contrast in cultures got old really quick.

The "treasure hunt" for details of a mysterious ancestor was fun, especially with secret passageways and abandoned castles, but even with layers being revealed, the story felt ambiguous. The villainess was rather two dimensional and predictable, and I thought it was a cliche plot device. It was a pleasant story overall, and all my Goodreads friends gave it 4 and 5 stars, so I'm definitely in the minority here. I'm not giving up on the author since I've read other stories of hers that I liked; this one was just a miss for me.

(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

Awww, this is such a fun and lighthearted romance, with a thread of mystery. I absolutely loved Eisley's klutziness and sense of humor. It's on the high end of romancey-ness for me, but didn't ever get over the top too much. I wouldn't recommend it for under 18 because of some details about Wes's past and a certain side character who appears in "a red towel." I definitely appreciated the Christian message and I really loved the old mystery that ran through it (you know me; I always prefer mystery to romance in contemporary stuff. 😉).

This book was a delightful contemporary romance with great humor and a touch of Cinderella. These are also incredibly real characters, each broken in their own way by events in their pasts. I loved this story of brokenness, forgiveness, grace, and humor. The romance is AMAZING. A truly swoon-worthy hero, but he's not perfect. Who is? Only in books and movies are they perfect save one flaw. This man is so human, and that makes him all the more loveable. And I adored the heroine and her kids. Wow! They were perfect--in a broken kind of way. This book is perfect if you love a great romance that will leave you wanting more.

At the heart of any great story lies characters who are likable, relatable, and dynamic. Author Pepper Basham always succeeds in penning her characters as such, with a healthy dose of family and joy. Wes and Eisley are what propel this story from a light and humorous start to an ending with surprising transformation, romance, and depth. Add in the fairy tale-like England trip, family mystery, and pop culture references and you have the perfect witty romance.

Country meets England between to covers of this book, in a "Britallachian" style as Pepper coined, using immersive descriptions and words not familiar to the southern vocabulary. I enjoyed seeing the prevalent clash of cultures in the verbiage alone with thoroughly English words like "nick" contrasted to southern expressions.

Wes is the definition of swoon-worthy. With a haunting past and bright career ahead of he, he's a walking picture of a changed man that's been redeemed by grace, trying to please his Heavenly Father and juggle his newfound faith within a challenging world. Eisley is someone you want as your best friend, especially with her crazy family and innate clumsiness. Her independence and spunky personality are a contrast to her own emotional insecurities, which she has to learn to surmount.

Let's talk about the ROMANCE! (where's my fan?) Fellow blogger Robin called Pepper the "Queen of Swoony", and it's a title well-earned and proven with this story. Wes's tender pursuit and desire for true friendship, plus the fact that he has no clue how attractive he is to Eisley, combine to make this one of Pepper's best romances yet. (It's tied for me with The Thorn Keeper for my fav.) It's not all chocolate and kisses in centuries-old towers, though, in Just the Way You Are. The romance has a certain maturity to it, a perspective of second chances, that makes it more meaningful. Wes and Eisley are at a point in their lives where they understand of the importance of a deeper friendship, a "gracious heart"-attitude, and this makes the love story all the sweeter.

The way the storyline and characters deal with potential obstacles is a fresh take. It has the requisite insurmountable problems for a modern fairy-tale type story, but the reactions of Wes and Eisley make you cheer them on and step back and think "Yes. This is how to handle it in the real world." A lesson of "being enough" just as you are because you're a redeemed, new creation in Christ is a prominent faith thread in this story. I especially liked the family support and encouragement both of them have as they make some important decisions or need advice.

I could go on about more aspects of this story I loved, like the history threads with long lost letters that tie into the modern story and offer encouragement, the adorableness of Eisley's kids and how they are so "normal", or the humor and pop culture references that made me smile (from Pollyanna to Superman to Lucille Ball). Fans of romance, modern-day fairy tales, stories of culture clashes, or humor and faith intertwined will love this start to a new series.

Thank you to the publisher for providing a copy of this novel. This is my honest review.

This was the first book that I have read by this author, and I can heartily and definitely say that it will not be the last! In fact, this story will be going on my “read again” shelf for sure!

What was so special about it? Well, for one, it had a bit of a fairy tale quality to it that really appealed to me. The single mom who loves her kids but definitely feels that she’s nothing special caught the attention of a handsome, charming, world-famous actor? Wow! This story was packed with swoony scenes that can take your breath away!

The next thing that charmed me about Just the Way You Are was the humor. It was not “over the top”, but it was there, and it was great! I had quite a few laugh out loud moments. These added so much fun to the novel.

Finally, this story had heart. So much heart! Both of the main characters, Eisley and Wes, felt real to me and I was desperate for things to work out for them. They also both carried heavy hurts from the past. These hurts and the resulting trust issues that arose from them were issues that were not easily overcome, giving this book the realism that balanced the fairy tale quality.

I loved this book from start to finish and I plan to read many more books by this author.

4.5 stars!!!

I found this contemporary romance utterly delightful. What happens when a girl from Appalachia meets a swoony Brit? There are so many laugh-out-loud moments that my family thought I was crazy. I can see this made into a movie, especially the closing scene.

But beyond the banter, the big family craziness and an old family mystery is a story of second chances. It is a story of forgiveness, trust and love.

A few of my favorite quotes:
" God loves you just the way you are. It's amazing and humbling, and oh so wonderful for those of us who fall flat on our faces most days."

"I can't change who I was, but God has changed who I have become."

"Perhaps it is time to start seeing your life from the present rather than the past. I believe it would be a lovely view, filled with many more possibilities than regret."

I cannot wait to read more by Bashum.

Just the Way You Are, book one in the Pleasant Gap Romance series is a delightful and swoon worthy romance story that readers will thoroughly enjoy. This is a charming and funny story about an unlikely pair, a single mom, Eisley, from the Appalachian Mountains and British movie star, Wes Harrison. It is about how a friendship and a second chance at love takes place. It discusses having trust issues in romantic relationships, as well as how people make mistakes. This story is beautifully written and has lots of memorable lines, such as “Gracious sakes! I squished a grandpa.” Readers will immediately fall in love with the characters and the story, not wanting to put the book down until the last page is turned.

Full review to come:

Just the Way You Are might be my favorite Pepper Basham book. Y’all this book has so much in it, my heart’s still sighing trying to put its awesomeness into words.

First, the lines! Ahhh! There are so many great quotable lines in here that I laughed out loud, cheesed from ear-to-ear, and teared up in that happily-ever-after glow. Just in case you need proof I’ll offer two: “post romantic betrayal disorder” and “post romantic kiss disorder...”

Such a FUN, funny, steamy (in a very, very clean and sweet way!) read!! Wes and Eisley are, perhaps, my favorite couple from Pepper Basham.

Yeah, never mind "perhaps." They *are* my favorite Pepper Basham couple.

Basham exudes joy and depth in her main characters, resulting in the most romantic-comediest Britallachian story!! I absolutely loved it!

Can I just start out by ROFL! :) :) This story was so much fun! A complete leave-the-world-behind-and-live-in-a-fairy-tale story! With lots of laughter and swoon worthy moments as well as Pepper's typical meaningful life lessons, you'll want to grab a copy soon!

I loved how endearingly transparent and real Eisley was when faced with the grandeur of a wealthy Britain family and their grand estate. As awed and star-struck (twitterpated...lol) as she was when she met Wes, she didn't let it keep her from treating him like a normal person. And once he got over his suspicions, Wes was a real swoon worthy hero! I liked that he had made some really big changes in his life and was determined not to let anything draw him back into his old lifestyle.

The secondary characters in this book were awesome! I loved Eisley's big family and her kids - each one with their own personalities. The hilarity that ensued when Eisley's overprotective dad meets Wes is so much fun! And the scheming of Uncle Joe and Wes' charming father will make you grin.

And last, but not least, I loved the two settings of this book - Britain and the Appalachians! They both sound lovely and Pepper does a good job of putting you right there in your imagination. You also get a little bit of mystery involving secret doors, hidden tunnels and an old tower while in England - oooh my! :)

Just the Way You Are is more than just a good book. It is a modern day fairytale filled with redemption and grace that will capture your heart from the first moment. Within the pages of this book you will find real people, with real life issues. This story will sweep you off your feet and drag you into a world that is every nerd girl's fantasy and you will soon find yourself consumed with researching history, "treasure" hunting, chocolate, British accents, Appalachia, AND.........Kisses.

Chocolate kisses, closet kisses, abandoned tower kisses, leave you senseless kisses...This book is PACKED with such romance that you may need to take precautionary actions to prevent injury from fainting! (such as a fainting couch, fan, smelling salts, etc.)

Don't let the passion fool you though. Pepper writes such sweet, unadulterated romance coupled with complete and total redemption. It blows my mind every single time I read one of her books. Just the Way You Are is the first contemporary novel I have read of Pepper's, and this easily makes it to the top of my favorite Rom Com stories EVER. I wish to see this in movie form so badly! "Ghirardelli in human form"...yes please! Haha!

The adventure, the romance, the grace...all woven together creates a beautiful masterpiece.

Warning: reading this book is likely to induce extreme chocolate cravings. Read at your own risk...and make sure to have a chocolate stash on hand! Because hero Wes is "Ghirardelli in human form." (p 12) Honestly, I don't know which had me swooning more - Wes or all the chocolate references. Either way, a fainting couch is a definite requirement to get a sensitive reader safely through to the end. :-)

And this is the kind of book you don't want to read because if you do it will be over. Yeah, I know that doesn't make much sense but here's the conversation I had with myself the whole read

Me: Slow down! You're reading too fast!
Myself: But it's so good!!!!! I can't help myself.
Me: Keep it up and you're gonna reach the end way too soon.
Myself: Gasp!
Me: I know - see that's what I'm sayin'! This good read is going to be over before it's begun.
Myself: Not if I stop and reread the good bits...that way I can savor it longer.
Me: Brilliant! That will slow you down some without interfering with your reading pleasure.
Myself: Right. So at the end of every chapter, I'll go back and read over the good bits.
Me: Hmmm...in other words, you're gonna read each chapter all the way through twice?
Myself: ((blissful sigh) Pretty much. This is going to be fun!

Brilliant and witty and soooo relatable. Eisley especially. Adorably klutzy (and really, it's time we kltuzes had a heroine to look up to!) and so refreshingly funny. She can't seem to stop turning her inner most thoughts into spoken-out-loud sentences at the most inopportune times with delightful results. I belly laughed so much I'm thinking of adding this book to my fitness regimen -- my obliques got way more of a workout with Eisley then doing sit-ups!

And then there's redeemed rogue Wes...as yummy as all the chocolate comparisons Eisley thinks up to describe him. Their hysterical first meet sets the tone for the whole story - though he doesn't stay that grumpy for long thanks to the whimsical Miss Eisley.

As a fairly new Christian, Wes has sworn off romance. He's still coming to grips with the tragic results of his former hard-hitting lifestyle. Which is totally in sync with Eiseley's determination to avoid real life romance at any cost. Been there, done that and doesn't trust herself to go there again. Ha! These two were made for each other and Basham sets out to prove it with toe-curling perfection. Seriously, plug in the fans, grab some ice packs and be prepared to s-w-o-o-n!!!!

But this romantically euphoric read has even more to offer with a compelling inspirational thread that was pointed directly at me. Seriously - Eisley battles with fear and doubt even though her faith is strong. And yes, that does seem like an oxymoron but since I'm going through the exact same thing, I totally get how it works! I've been so uplifted by this story!

And I haven't even touched on Eisley's zany Appalachian clan or the intriguing centuries old mystery or the obnoxious secondary character that I wanted to throttle or...well, this review is too long as it is. Best way to sum it all up:

Romantic Comedy that sizzles!

What was there not to like about this book? Absolutely nothing. I loved it every minute.
Pepper Basham nails it in every aspect. The spiritual theme was wonderful and spoke to my heart in more ways than one. I struggle with fear myself and it's amazing how God can speak to my heart through a work of fiction. I thank Him for that.

The romance? Whew! She totally nailed that, too. The cast of characters were awesome and I certainly do look forward to hearing from them in future books. I hope to, since this one is labeled Pleasant Gap Romance # 1.

Her heroine is precious and totally likeable, even lovable. She has a struggle, but is trusting God to help her overcome. Her hero, wow, I swooned more than once. He loves God, but is also struggling with trust issues. How good our God is to help His children. And Eisley's family? Those folks are so real and the grace just flows from their hearts like a river.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and couldn't tear myself away till finished. Highly recommended.

Update: I just finished a reread and loved it even more the second time around. Highly recommended!!

Pepper Basham has become a must-read author for me. Not only can she write entrancing historical fiction, she also writes captivating contemporary fiction filled with humor, romance, and inspiration. Set against the dual backdrops of England and Appalachia, this book grabbed me from the start and wouldn’t let go until the last page. The main characters, Wes and Eisley, are realistically flawed, but endearing and totally relatable. I enjoyed their adventures and loved seeing their growth in faith and hope. The secondary characters are so well-developed and vibrant that I felt I knew them. Pepper Basham’s sense of humor, her creative and delightful writing, and her unique writing voice combine to make this a very enjoyable and memorable read.

Just the Way You Are, book one in the Pleasant Gap Romance series, is a contemporary romance that completely entranced me. I loved every minute in England, and the time in the Appalachia region of NC…oh, yeah. I could totally relate! It cracked me up at one point. But this book isn’t just good for a laugh. My heart was tumbled about and there may have been a bit of dampness on my cheeks because the faith theme is strong and touching. Basham’s writing talent is simply amazing! It’s been a while since I sat with a book in my hand and just pondered on profound thoughts filling the page. This is only the beginning of what is sure to be a fabulous series.
I was provided an early electronic copy of the book from the author. No compensation has been received.

Delightful and slightly crazy, Just The Way You Are is a beautiful romance about second chances, forgiveness, and rebuilding trust - both in others and in one's self. You've got to love characters who are so relatable, flawed, honest, and appealing. This book had a wonderful mix of British charm and tradition and Appalachian quirk and welcome. It's a great balance between heartrending mistakes, family, fairytale romance, and ancient mystery.

Eisley is travelling to England to research a story that connects her family with a mystery that spans many hundreds of years. She certainly doesn't expect to be welcomed at the airport by none other than Christopher Wesley Harrison, famous actor with rather a womaniser reputation. But Wes is desperate to be a changed man. He has moved away from his past mistakes, embraced his new-found faith and God's forgiveness, and, after initially suspecting the new American, can't help but be charmed by Eisley's honesty, openness, and beauty of spirit. Together they begin to unravel the mystery of Eisley's ancestor as they slowly learn to trust again and maybe even take a risk on love.

I enjoyed the first half of this book, but it was something like a fairytale dream. English castles, sweep-you-off-your-feet romance, proper British sentences that were almost archaic. But, I thought the best part of the book was when Eisley and Wes go to America and become ensconced by Eisley's big, loud, and loving family. This is when the story truly sings. When Eisley's past heartbreak becomes all the more real, when Wes' past catches up with him, and when their romance truly becomes real.

And boy, what a romance. The kisses. The. Kisses. Wow. This book should come with a fan. Or a freezer. Or a warning: due to many toe-curling kisses the reader may overheat. Please proceed with caution. Eisley is a fabulous character. Her bumbling, chaotic charm seeps through the pages. I loved her. So flawed, so loving and forgiving, so hurt by the past and yet brave enough to take another chance. Wes too is charming. He is a British actor, accent and gentlemanly manners and all. But seeing Wes in Eisley's world, in the chaos of her family and struggling to right his wrongs is what made him a loveable character.

It was the cover that drew me to this story initially. It reminded me of Susan May Warren's Christiansen series which I adore. And then I noticed that it was actually written by Pepper Basham who is quickly becoming an author to watch. I loved her previous contemporary novel, and the writing in this book brings the unique story to life. I'm really looking forward to reading more of her contemporary stories.

The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

Eisley Barrett is a single mother of three, who goes to England to help her dying uncle do research for his novel. She is staying with the kindly Harrisons, who's son so happens to be Christopher Wesley Harrison the swoon-worthy star of the small screen, who is known for playing period drama heroes.

Wes is an actor who has spent the last year of his life re-evaluating and prioritizing, having given his life to Christ and leaving his playboy ways behind.

Wes's parents are just adorable, still crazy about each other after all these years they love their son and only want what is best for him. Eisley's dad was an absolute hoot. Gruff and a merciless teaser, he loves his family and wants to protect his children anyway that he can, he has a good heart and just wants his children to be happy.

Eisley is beautiful inside and out, she sees her own faults, and is refreshingly honest and open. She loves her children and wants to give them the best that she can. I loved her willingness to laugh at herself, and how comfortable just being who she is.

Wes is thankful for the second chance that he's been given to live his life differently. He is determined to fight for the ones that he loves, even when the mistakes from his past threaten to ruin his future. He is a modern day Darcy right out of a Sunday night PBS BBC miniseries, and even though they give him a rough time, he fits right in with Eisley's All-American family.

Overall, an absolutely delightful read, I think that one of my favorite things was meeting all of Eisley's siblings who all have their own unique stories to tell. This is a delightfully flirtatious read, full of witty dialog both internal and external, and great chemistry between the main characters. You won't want to miss it!

Just the Way You Are is the first installment from Pepper D Basham's fabulous new series, Pleasant Gap Romance. Single mom, Eisley Barrett, has had her share of heartache in the past. She travels to England, where she meets Wes Harrison. Wes, too, struggles with his past that leaves him with trust issues and bitterness. After spending time with Eisley, he sees who she is and finds himself falling for her.

Wow! This book has a perfect mix I love in a story: Steamy, but clean romance; Laugh out loud humor; Adventure and fun; Suspense and mystery; A beautiful setting. What more could I ask for? Love, love, love this book!

5 plus stars.

Eisley Barrett, from Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, was sent to England by her novelist uncle to research family history for his newest and final romance novel. Staying at the parents' home of a famous British movie star, Eisley, a woman terribly hurt by her ex-husband's infidelities, was not in the market for a handsome man of the world. She was there for a job and his sort of distraction was the last thing on her mind. And a smoldering distraction he was.

Wes Harrison was suspicious of this American claiming to be in England doing research. Paparazzi had plagued his life and he just couldn't take any more intrusions. But there was something about this funny, self-effacing, very cute woman that drew him, and resistance was proving impossible.

This was such a funny book. Eisley's humor and bantering made me laugh out loud. The story was good, pulled me right in. About the time that things got physical I started to tune out. Steamy kissing scenes might have lead to more, except for God's appointed interruption. Her son catching them in a closet was even more uncomfortable. Most people would consider it an extremely clean romance — nothing "happened". I don't know. It just made me want to skim through those sections.

But, kudos to the author for including how the characters fought their worldly natures to be in God's will, not to mention many other faith issues throughout that were clearly a part of the characters' lives.

How Eisley loved her children, and how this proper, drop dead gorgeous actor wanted to be a part of all their lives was heartening.

Since moving to Northeast Tennessee I've grown fond of my new surrounding culture. I devour all things Appalachia. I'm looking forward to reading more by Pepper Basham.

I enjoyed the first 30% of the book , but so often I find that romance novels begin to bore me around the midway mark . There were several dreamy scenes ,but sadly I just couldn't get past the slow pace . As this was a DNF I won't be rating it . I hope to try it again sometime when I have more patience . If you do enjoy the romance genre you may actually enjoy it .The male lead is a BBC period drama star , and I picture him looking like Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit , and North & South star) due to the cover model .

What I thought of Just the Way You Are

Well, let’s talk opening scene. It took exactly one sentence for me to decide I liked the writing style. Half a dozen sentences proved that I’d love the main female character. The third line spoken—sold me. I had no doubt that not only would I love the book, I’d be giving it a 5-star review. Again, I was right. It feels so good to be right now and then.

I read on, all eagerness and with one eye squinted whenever a male appeared. Just keepin’ it real.

It happened. Fast. And yes, this author loves her romance. Every pitter and patter of every heart. Racing pulses. Swooning knees. You name it. She’s got it.

And she does it with such humor that I still couldn’t stop reading. Eisley—she’s keeper. Seriously. Love her character. Perhaps because I relate to her “run-my-mouth-to-cover-my-awkwardness” approach to miserable situations.

But it goes deeper than that.

For example, when Pepper Basham compared a toddler to a “cuter version of Gollom,” I knew that nothing, not even kisses that make me have to skip three pages would stop me from finishing this book. And she didn’t do that to me, you know. Only two pages. I only had to skip two. Ahem.

I’ll be honest. I wouldn’t give Just the Way You Are to a girl under eighteen unless she was accustomed to frank expressions of sexual attraction. Then again, should anyone miss out on, “We snogged? Shouldn’t I remember doing something like snogging?”

That’s only the slightest hint of the amazing one/two liners that pepper this book. With a name like Pepper, we should have expected it. Well named, Ma and Pa Pepper! Well named!

So, for a slight summary, here we go.

What I loved:

Characterization—it was phenomenal. Every character stuck to his or her personality, quirks and all. She managed to make me feel sorry for the bad guy while still rooting for said bad guy’s demise. I even cheered for the good guys, even when they blew it. And the misunderstandings were PLAUSIBLE. Shocker!

Setting. I swear, Ms. Basham has a FABULOUS sense of description. There was just enough to make me feel like I was there without burdening me with too much. Well done. SUPER well done.

Mystery—this book took the poking around into interesting places we’re used to seeing with sleuths like Nancy Drew and blended it brilliantly with the deduction skills of a more intellectual sleuth. In the end—a totally satisfying combination.

But one of the best things in Just the Way You Are is how, without preachiness but with solid references to Scripture, she leads you, time and again, back to the Lord and reminds you of Biblical truths and principles. It’s why she included the mystery and so many other well-rounded elements.

What I didn’t love as much:

The sap. Seriously, I know this is a romance, and I expect it. I can get past those “freezer kisses” referenced above, and even appreciated her addressing serious attraction between Christians. It was realistically done. Well done. But, that said, by the end, the lengthy declarations of undying love and affection were… a bit much. A girl can only take so much, you know. We get it. They’re in love. Bully for them.

I do also have a nit-picky issue with the book. Pronouns attributed to God are not capitalized and being so used to that, I actually stopped reading and backtracked a few times. The “he” and “him” and “You’re” and “Your” become convoluted in the narrative.

Still, five stars all the way.

Seriously, anyone who not only can but DOES write, “Can you fall off a crag?” in a way that makes it utterly charming and snicker-worthy—deserves 5 stars right there.

Okay, so maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. How about this? Because Just the Way You Are really was one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. Top ten of the past couple of years. Best this year so far. And, even knowing how sappy she is, I’m off to buy another of her books. I just hope the characters are as amazing as in this one.

Well, and because of some of her brilliant lines. Probably my favorite encouraging line for me as a Christian is when she’s trying to figure out what the Lord wants for her and she says, “Or maybe You’re trying to get me to watch where You’re going” (capitals mine).

Not long after that, the line “Did God love her or what?” showed up and slapped me upside the head. NOW THAT is how we should think of our Amazing Father! Something cool happens and it’s an instant reminder of the Lord’s love and provision. How cool is that?

"Gracious sakes. I've squished a grandpa."

Eisley Barrett has made a grand entrance, tripping over her own two feet in London's Heathrow International Airport, managing to land in a very unladylike position on top of Daniel Harrison; ironically, her gracious host during a long awaited venture into family history. Accompanying Mr. Harrison is his well-known son, Wesley, an actor whose torrid personal life has been splashed across the front pages of nearly every tabloid known to man, but conveniently never making it to Pleasant Gap, Virginia; Eisley's safe little corner of the world.

Christopher Wesley Harrison cannot imagine that the auburn haired beauty on his father's arm is as innocent as she seems. Every woman that crosses his path has an agenda, at least that is what he used to think, however there is something totally refreshing about this American single mom, who says what she thinks and apparently loses her footing in spite of her footwear choices. In fact, the more time that Wesley Harrison spends with Eisley Barrett, the more that he is convinced that his Lord above has finally humored his father's matchmaking schemes, aside from Eisley feeling like "she is grass stains and gravy. .. and he is cashmere and caviar", he is totally enamored with the woman.

Eisley doesn't know exactly what to think about Wesley Harrison, he just keeps showing up, acting interested in her traipse through an ancestral residence for clues about a generations-old mystery, wanting to know about her crazy family and acting like he sincerely wants to be her "friend". Friends are in the safe zone, aren't they? For Eisley's heart has been deeply scarred and her three young children need her to be realistic; she is not a princess in need of rescue by an English knight.

Honestly, this is one of the most entertaining books that I have ever read, with enough one-liners to fill the pages of an entire journal. Quite characteristically though, Pepper Basham has mixed her "happily-ever-after" positivism with just the right quantities of realism and truth, making the yummy "snogging in the closet" scenes as tasty as icing on a cake!

It was my privilege to receive a copy of this book from the author; the opinions are entirely my own.

On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, Just The Way You Are by Pepper D. Basham is Lindt Lindor Truffles (my fave is dark chocolate). Chocolate crunch on the outside and creamy goodness in the center, but wait, it's in book form!

[I received this book for free. My opinions are my own.]

Eisley, the heroine of Britallachia (Britain and Appalachian Mountains) stumbles right into the arms of a British grandpa. Romantic, right? Did I mention he's a certified matchmaker? Enter the handsome grandson, Wes.

I adore Eisley because she's every girl who's ever been afraid to dream a happily ever after, who says all the wrong things, and who has a giving heart for her family. Really, that has to be all of us? But, Eisley isn't a picture perfect character. She makes mistakes, assumes, and fears trusting.

So let's get realer than real: I giggled my way through this Disney-like fairytale, where story becomes reality. #hopelessromantic

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not drawn to contemporary reads;but this read has all the necessary ingredients, and just the right mix, to make a terrific novel.

Broken lives and hearts, God's amazing grace, His medicine of laughter, and a writer who puts it all together to produce a novel that I've now read twice! This book has just the right mix of fun, love, laughter and faith. It has truly laugh out loud scenes, wonderful dialogue, lovable characters ( including some awesome kids), and a strong forgiveness thread woven throughout the entire plot. This romantic comedy isn't to be missed! Pepper has made a great impression in contemporary reads as well as historicals. The stories they tell are heartwarming and full of hope!

"She threw him a lifeline. 'God rescues lost things you know.' "

I received this book free from the author. All opinions are my own.

First, let me say this review is based on reading the book twice. The first time I read it, there were many life interruptions and I had to keep putting the book down and picking it up again. So, I sat down and read the entire book again June 15th and absolutely LOVED it!
My, my, my! Definitely, a must read book! Comedy from the beginning, but I loved how the author used the mistakes in the characters pasts to show how they were made new with God's forgiveness. To show such personal growth in such a fun, interesting book takes a talented writer, Pepper Basham is just that. Talented!
Without being preachy there are lessons about faith and forgiveness so expertly woven throughout the story.
I loved the attraction between Wes and Eisley (they did have a little matchmaking help without them knowing), the kisses were sweet, amazing and mind-numbing all at the same time. I loved the aspect of hunting for treasures from the past, the tower scene was amazing. Wes coming to America was fun to read. Nate Jenkins certainly put him through the ringer to protect his daughter.
The cultural differences were also a fun aspect of this book. There's even a good villain thrown in the mix.
Eisley is such a great mom, sister, daughter, niece, and friend. She puts her family first when trouble arises. She is willing to give up her chance at happily ever after to keep them from getting hurt. You will have to read what happens on your own. I don't give spoilers. I highly recommend this cross-cultural, Britallachian romantic comedy. I've already read it twice! I can't wait to read whatever this author writes next.

I have been hearing some buzz in the book world about Pepper Basham's upcoming release, mumblings about swoony heroes and closets and thought, "What are they on about? I will have to investigate further and find out if this book is as good as they say it is?"

The cover is beautiful and I could not wait to read it! Good thing I had cleared my schedule because I may, or may not, have been up until 2 am. reading about Wes and Eisley.

Yes, there are swoony heros, cute heroines and funny scenes that will make you laugh out loud, but there is more! Eisley and Wes' journey to forgiveness, restoration and healing top it all off and make this read one to go back to over and over again. This is one we can relate to and it is also one with a strong reminder that we can't get through this messy life alone.

Along with the love story, there is a mystery to solve, and this Brittallachian romance, although full of fun and laughs, will touch your heart in a profound way. It did mine!

Pepper Basham is a genius, she has mixed up just the right recipe of entertainment, romance and redemption.

PLEASE tell me there is a book #2 in the works for Pleasant Gap.

Just The Way You Are by Pepper Basham is a laugh out loud novel that has a solid Christian message.
The protagonists both had to learn to trust God and others again.

Eisley is a divorced mother of three in Appalachia. Wes is a British movie star who has recently become a Christian. Eisley travels to England to research a distant ancestor on behalf of her ailing uncle.
Sparks fly and the banter is witty in this contemporary rom-com with a message of true repentance and forgiveness. Pepper Basham strikes again with a flawed hero and heroine, a quirky family and swoony closet scenes.
If you are looking for an upbeat book that moves right along but has a great message— try this novel.

I am not a huge contemporary romance reader—I much prefer historical novels. But I have read Pepper Basham’s work before, starting with her historical Penned in Time series, and I was intrigued to see how her voice transferred to a different genre. While a bit different in that there is more humor in this novel, her storytelling is very much the same and the romance between a handsome British actor and a somewhat clumsy Appalachian single mother sparkles as brightly as in her historical books.

This is a novel of second chances in unlikely circumstances. The main characters are flawed people with deep wounds: one a reformed scoundrel (his own words) and the other a divorcee with three children to consider. Throw an ocean between them and a few (!) cultural differences, and the stage is set for a heartwarming and humorous love story.

I found myself with a silly grin on my face most of the time, probably matching the ones the main characters wore. Basham excels in writing swoony romance, and this book is definitely no exception. The romance is clean, but it does get intense at times, and for that reason I would suggest it for older, mature teens and up. I appreciate that she doesn’t shy away from the difficulties in saving the bedroom for marriage as it emphasizes the difference in lifestyle that redemption makes, in one character particularly. The romantic intensity is often relieved with humor, which only made me smile even more.

There is a lot of faith-based content, especially about trusting God with the future. Forgiveness is also highlighted often, of those who wound the characters and of the mistakes they make themselves, which is often the harder of the two to forgive. I love that Basham is able to combine a heart-pounding romance with deep Christian themes.

I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy contemporary romance or who have read her historical series and enjoy her storytelling style. I think she has great appeal to both groups—she writes wonderful romance in either genre!

I received a free copy of this book from the author, but no compensation for this review. I was not required to write a favorable one and the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.
