The Royal Pain is kinda modern retelling of Cinderella story with a twist where our heroine is actually a bad girl instead of a sweet goody goody girl. I don’t read much of Cinderella retellings but something intrigued me about this book because I’ve never read a book about a bad Cinderella so I want to give this a shot. Well, this was an okay read but I didn’t liked the main protagonist. I can endure sarcastic, mean and tough girls but Finley seemed too annoying and bitchy for my taste. Nonetheless, it was a good read and I did enjoyed it but not as much as I thought I would.
Seventeen Year Finley Roze is a spoiled brat who’s life revolves around parties, drinks, friends, and boys. Her life completely changes when she gets drunk and slightly drugged in a party which eventually lands her in a hospital bed. Finley’s father gets furious with her and sends her to her Aunt Hattie’s place to spend her summer and gets restricted from all the technology to communicate with her friends. When her Aunt takes her to the Lakeside Retirement Community, she meets the handsome Aiden Sorenson who might be the man of her dreams. Aiden and Finley are complete opposites but with each time they spend together they get more closer. But Aiden’s isn’t who he seems to be and when she finally learns about his mighty secret, she gets pretty scared and feels she isn’t good enough for him.
I don’t like Finley Roze but I don’t hate her either. She is sarcastic and spoiled girl who acted downright bitchy and annoying at the beginning. I couldn’t connect with her and didn’t cared what happened with her. Even after the character development at the end, she still didn’t piqued my interest. I liked Aiden Sorenson! He was adorably sweet, fun, gentle and quite romantic too. Finley and Aiden are perfect opposites to each other and of course, opposites always attract. I enjoyed the relationship between Finley and Aiden but I was disappointed with their chemistry which totally lacked all the fireworks and sparks. As for the supporting characters, I loved Jess, her step-sister who helped Finley so many times and also the hilarious old ladies from the retirement community . Coming to the hating list, I have her best friend Linna and also her evil step mother Sheila whom I immensely hated.
The plot was okay but I still think it could’ve been much better. Although, I enjoyed the overall story, It failed to excite me because of the predictable story and that shocking twist at the end which I obviously saw it coming and also not to forget the annoying heroine which was a bit turn off for me. The story moved in a slow pace and told in Finley’s POV. I liked the writing style of the author, It was simple and easy to understand.
Despite all my issues, I honestly think it was a good read but not great enough to fangirl over. I didn’t liked Finley so the next book may not work out for me but I would definitely check out more books from Tara Brown.
Seventeen-year-old Finley Roze is a spoilt brat whose life revolves around parties and having fun as being rich comes with the idea that you are untouchable. After Finley's latest stunt lands her in hospital, her dad has reached his limit and sent her to her version of Siberia. To an Aunt, she has never met on her mum's side in a small town off of Canada. Here Finley will spend the summer break, away from technology and helping her aunt at an Assisted Living Facility. It is here that Finley meets Aiden Sorensen. With her love and happiness on the line, will this be the motivation that Finley needs to buck up her ideas and change once and for all? Find out in Book #1 of the Royals Trilogy by Tara Brown.
I REALLY wanted to love this book, but there were a few things that just irked me sooooo much I just couldn't get past them. I may unintentionally be putting spoilers here so don't read further if you are afraid of them. I really liked Finley, yes she was an idiot about some things and did some stupid things but she was 17 at the start of this book and living a miserable life no matter how wealthy she was. Her stepmother was a MONSTER and her father neglectful and frankly moronic for taking his wife's word over his daughter who even acting out was clearly doing so because she was unhappy. I start with this because it is the main reason I disliked this book. EVERYTHING is thrown at Finley and she survives it, takes it, and becomes a better person, but no one not even the hero, the man who claims to love her so much does any changing or growing. Oh the author throws in passages where you he character says "you're making me better" etc but actions speak louder than words, and that brings me to another point I hated. I almost threw my e-reader across the room after the thousandth time that the hero (her true love) called her a spoilt selfish child. You know what, maybe in the beginning her character was vilified and seemed to be spoiled etc but the hero called her selfish and spoiled RIGHT UP TO THE END OF THE NOVEL! One second he says he loves her, the next he's yelling at her calling her spoiled!! Frankly she's 17, he's 19, but he acts like he's 30! And yes, there are circumstances why he acts soooo old, but the fact that he beats her over the head with these reasons just made me really not like him. There were a few moments I thought he was sweet, sadly though this was no Cinderella story, and he definitely wasn't Prince Charming IMO. I just wished the author had written him in a way that "matched" Finley. I didn't feel as if he truly respected or even loved her, despite telling her so. It hurt because the book held a lot of promise but the hero fell VERY FLAT.
Finley Roze is not your typical spoiled teenager, well she is but she is so much more than that. When an unfortunate incident lands her across the world, she meets Aiden Sorenson. Her world and her life changes for the better.
I loved this story so much. The storyline was realistic and well written. The characters were flawed but redeemable (at least some of them). I liked the dynamics of each character. Each one had a part to play to further they story, and they did it. They enhanced the story instead of taking away from it. I will recommend this book to others. I give it 5/5 Platypires.
I am not sure where to start with this modern day twisted Cinderella story. Finley is like the Lindsay Lohan character from Mean Girls. Inside she is sweet but a taste of the good life makes her popular. Her stepmother is an evil THOT and her dad is clueless. At least the stepsisters seem to be okay. Being sent away for a summer was the best thing for Finley. Her sweet side reappeared and she fell in love. Wait for it, she fell in love with a MF prince who would put up with her crazy. It was humorous, sweet, sad and sassy as we watch Finley come into her own. Aiden himself is special, but they both push each other to grow.
"I saw you and I couldn’t stop staring no matter how ungentlemanly it was. I know we’re young and I know you’re scared of that. But I also know I will love you until I die and even then. I am scared of every other thing in my life aside from marrying you. You are the one thing I am certain of.” ~ Aiden
Another retold fairy tale that doesn't need to be rewritten. The book is a mix between the movie The Prince and I and the classic Disney's Cinderella but set in modern times with an annoying and immature teenage girl with major issues and angst as the main character. It was a lot of drama. The whole book is drama...drama with her family, her friends, her on and off again Prince boyfriend. Just drama that's been dragged on for a couple hundred pages. I'm sad to say this is a Tara Brown series I will not be reading, especially since I love her other works. I guess I'm just not a fan of retold fairy tales that she's written so far as I wasn't a fan of First Kiss either. And I wanted to like this book so bad! Again, not something that will keep me from reading her other works. I'm still a fan.
I don't know how she does it, but since the first book I read by Tara, she has kept me captivated. They pull you in, almost like you are there, witnessing the whole story.
What do you get when you cross Mean Girls and Cinderella? A fairy tale unlike any you have heard. A bratty girl sent to her Aunt's, to hopefully learn a lesson and of course, be out of the step mother's way. But, along the way, she meets a group of people, that help her grow. One being a Prince.
Holy crap was this book good... I finished it in one go and I know I'll be paying for not falling asleep till the wee hours of the morning but oh so worth it for this book. It draws you in and keeps you turning the page. Aiden is amazing and I wish he was mine. Finley has been dealt a hand from hell but after waking up in the hospital and being told she is being sent to an aunt she has never met before. Falling down the rabbit hole was the best thing to ever happen to her.
After reading a few pages.. I never put the book down📖❤️ It has so many good moments.. Finley is a typical spoilt girl.. A rebel... Yet i just love her antics.... The narrative.. The inner monolog is the best part. I love this Aiden.. the way he treats her... His adventures... He truly becomes my prince charming.. This book has everything... Surprise.. Emotions.. Laughter.. And a very good narrative..
I have read every one if Tara’s books and they just keep getting better and better! Finley’s antics and smart mouth had me rolling right from the start. I fell in love with Aiden just like she did. The handwritten letters and his kind heart made me swoon and my heart skip a beat. I loved, loved, loved this and cannot wait for the next two books.
A wild girl with issues that finds happiness in a place where she least expected. I’m glad I got this book. I enjoyed every bit of it. I couldn’t put it down. I can honestly recommend this book. Can’t wait to read the next book.
The book was good. Some of the very immature grammar was too much but it was not a bad read. The biggest problem is that the book went over months and years and yet the end just stopped.
When I pick up a Tara Brown book, I know I will be getting a well written and eveloped story - with characters you will and swoon over, those you hate, those you just love to hate (*cough* Shelia) or hate to love! A very different 'fairy tale' - think 90210 meets Cinderella.
Not your typical Cinderella though, she's scarcasric, drinks and parties, lives it up and tries her hardest to be free. A spoiled little brat who can't seem to function without her so called friends, Instagram and lip plumper. She's destructive and can't seem to get out of her own way (as Aiden so pointedly told her) to see what's right in front of her. She's spoilt and doesn't think of others. Not until she was sent away, to her Aunt Hattie's does she start to evaluate her life and her behavior. She really doesn't have much choose, Hattie is a force not to be reckoned with. I love Hattie! She's awesome!
With lots lots of drama, an evil stepmother and real life Prince Charming, this book is sure to make you laugh, scream, roll your eyes, and swoon over the sweetness of Aiden sweeping Finley off her feet and falling in love.
Really was a great story and I can't wait to dive back into their world and see what else awaits Finley and Aiden!
Another fantastic read from Tara Brown. You literally just can't go wrong picking up one of her books. This was such a fun read! Finley is extremely easy to hate. I mean, this chick is so super obnoxious, but yet, you can't help but love her, and feel for her because she's so broken. After a life changing night, Finley is sent away to get her head on straight, and though she loves her aunt, she is not looking forward to this getaway. Turns out, it's the best thing that could have ever happened to her. Meeting Mr. Right when you are self indulged snot on the mend is hard, but turns out, kinda perfect. Romance and spunk, filled with heart and tons of laughter.
I LOVE how versatile Tara Brown’s writing is! I first read her when I stumbled upon her Born series and I haven’t looked back. I was pretty impressed with this book. There were some moments where I had a hard time connecting with Finley at first because she was such a spoiled brat but once you get the back history and the stuff with her dad and stepmom, I was hooked. That spoke to me because I had some similar issues with the whole stepparents stuff. Aiden was just too good to be true! He pulled out all the stops!! I can NOT wait to see where this couple goes and continue on the journey with Finley of self discovery.
Disappointed with this book. I have read other books by this author and loved them, this book however, I did not. I just couldn't bring myself to like Finley and the male lead was not 'Alpha' enough for me. No chemistry between the two either. The plot I found muddled at times and then it seemed to drag in parts, lacking any serious drama to really grab my attention. It is the first book of three and I don't think I will be reading them. It was very sedate in tone for me, I like my heroine's feisty and hero's hot and sexy, this book gave me neither I'm afraid to say.
No Spoilers- I loved this book the first time I read it a few years ago and love it still. The whole concept of love at first sight always gets me sucked into a book but Tara made it so much more. It was a beautiful read of growing up and maturing for the better, for the one you love. So happy that the story will continue because I've been waiting forever lol.
I had read this book when it was called White Girl Problems. when I first started reading this book I didn't realize it was an updated version with a different name. I enjoyed reading the first version of the book and reading this version was even better.
DNF. Too high school mean girl. I don't enjoy the mindset of a bitchy personality who is all about clothes and makeup. bitchy is fine, but it has to be bitchy for a reason, not superficiality.
