Common Law #4

Home Fires

Rate this book
Trouble comes to Mosely, Montana, from the outside world. When the residents of Mosely are left on their own, they can make things work. Sure, there’s always been a militia operating up in the hills, but they were small-scale—just survivalists doing their thing—until organizers came in from out of state. Now Jericho Crewe and the rest of the sheriff’s department are facing down a heavily armed band of fanatics, and the feds are busy elsewhere.

The odds are hopeless, but Jericho swore an oath to serve and protect the citizens of Mosely. He won’t walk away from that, even if Wade Granger’s begging him to run away somewhere and finally be together the way they always should have been.

But this time, it’s Jericho who refuses to leave Mosely, even if staying kills him.

I absolutely loved the wrap up of Kate Sherwood's Common Law series. Home Fires was nearly perfect, in my opinion. The steam is still low, but there is a little. And Jericho and Wade are fantastic. Love them. It's the writing, though, that kept me reading.

This review will be short, because I wish to be careful of spoilers, but this fourth book is also the best of the series. Things get wrapped up - though I won't promise any neatness, because everything does get messy.

In Home Fires Jericho and Wade are openly seeing each other. Jericho knows the score and he knows Wade, and he's worked it out in his own head that he doesn't care that Wade is not on the same side of the law. Wade does have a moral compass when it really matters and when it comes to Jericho, Wade is fiercely protective.

Home Fires is the most action packed of the series and the wrap up is edge-of-seat exciting. I loved every moment of it. And I loved how everyone came together when it counted and I loved how Wade showed his dedication to keeping Jericho safe.

And they get their HEA!

I'm happy I read this series and I recommend it to lovers of romantic suspense. It's good story telling with heroes that are far from perfect and story-lines that have kept me coming back for more. And, I wouldn't mind a spin-off series with what gets talked about in the epilogue -- that could be seriously fun.

Okay. Wow this book was fabulous and if I sound surprised that's because I am, the previous books while well written and entertaining were not what I really wanted or expected. I'd expected more of a romance with the focus being mainly on Jericho and Wade but this series just wasn't that and it took me a while (two and a half books) to sync up.
That said 'Home Fires' was everything I wanted and more, it started so well:

“Is there any possibility it’s a practical joke?” Jericho Crewe asked. “Or just a rumor, maybe?”
Unfortunately, Sheriff Kayla Morgan shook her head. “I was the one who called them,” she said, leaning back in her battered leather desk chair.
"You called the feds.” Jericho waited a few seconds for the words to make sense, then gave up. “We have feds in town worrying about the border, feds in town still cleaning up the biker mess, feds in town investigating your dad, feds in town trying to catch Wade—and you woke up one morning, looked around, asked yourself, ‘What does this town need more of?’ and the answer you came up with was ‘feds.’ Honestly?”

It started well and just got better, the humour remained throughout, Jericho and Wade are finally openly together (although it's still not a hot and steamy read) and yes the Feds are back in town.
This book never lets up, Wade is brilliant (as always) and it's an exciting action packed read full of the characters we've come to love over the previous three and of course Jericho's dry humour.

"Maybe we could plant some bugs in the conference room while the FBI’s gone,” Jericho tried. “Hockley, you DEA boys got anything like that lying around? Sheriff’s department might be able to come up with two Styrofoam cups and a long piece of string, but they’d probably notice that.”

I don't give 5* often or easily but here I just can't give less. I loved it and I'm hoping for a spinoff.

What was THAT?
MAD fucking MAX in Mosely?

Wow, this small town nest has really deserved an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. Because the list of crimes that were committed here is VERY impressive. But THIS LAST sequel exceeded ALL my imagination of criminality, it set completely new benchmarks!

Forget the mob from previous sequels, forget feds, forget corrupted cops, forget small and unimportant criminals with their ridiculous smuggling activities, forget the biker gang with its connection to the Chicago mob... HERE it is about THE WAR against the small town. HERE is about to survive. HERE is about the LAST MAN STANDING. And in the middle of this chaos Jericho and Wade hand in hand, .

I'd say, we can talk about a genre change here. Militia groups attack a sheriff department to set free the prisoners?! Full armed? In the USA (not in Brasilia or Columbia?) Not a fantasy? Who knows.

It is for sure a great basis for a blockbuster movie, but I don't actually enjoy reading action scenes. I have to confess, I skimmed through the majority of them.

But despite some eye-roll-moments and skimmed battle scenes, I enjoyed the last book pretty much.

And of course the main reason for it were Jericho and Wade. They were BOTH so confident and brave and...SEXY!

They two together...

I can't just have enough of them. And I forgive this series, or this sequel, all these slightly overloaded events - these two main characters alone made this series worth to read it.

The ending was just...

touching...moving...jericho-wading....simply...heart-melting...

Remember, how we were all guessing, how the author would solve the conflict between two totally opposite lagers they represented? She did it EXCELLENTLY. I didn't consider THAT to tell the truth, and I like THIS solution the best.

And do you know WHAT? I can imagine that it was not the last time when we met those both guys...

GAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

What an ending to this series!!! Think Mad Max (withouth the dystopian setting) meets High Noon (without the horses) and a touch of Remington Steele in the end and you will get an idea what's going on here. Umm, no? Well, too bad, I won't tell you more, so I guess you have to read it, then.

This book starts with a bang and ends with a whole bunch of them -quite literally- and everything else in between kept me nailed to my seat and my eyes glued to my Kindle. Okay, the story might be OTT, but fast-paced, action-packed and entertaining at that, with a showdown that has no rival and I've read it in one go which is saying something...

Although again there is not much steam in this book, I didn't miss it one bit, because everytime Jericho and Wade are together it's still explosive (umm, yeah, also quite literally sometimes) or simply sweet and heart-melting.

We get an epilogue that's perfect in my eyes and it gives me a bit of hope that we might see more of these guys someday. I so wouldn't mind because I was right: this series was right up my alley!!!

Jericho and Wade outside of Mosely, weren't cop and criminal. They weren't their parents' sons, weren't men with painful histories, weren't running, and weren't refusing to run. They were just Jericho and Wade, and that was all they ever needed to be, as long as the world left them alone.

I loved it! I loved it! I loved it!!!

This was it, the final book in Kate Sherwood's series 'Common Law' and it was perfect. Did I finally get my sexy times...yeah, there wasn't a lot of them but what there was I loved. But more importantly than that these guys got their HEA! and so did I.

Like the previous books in this series there was action...seriously Wade went to the toy store and came back with 'blow shit-up' toys...how sexy is that. Sorry, I have a weak spot for men who can blow shit up...I'm a 'Die Hard' fan...so sue me ;)

Each of these books has contained a different story and I loved that because it kept things from getting too drawn out and reaching that point...you know the one...come on I can't be the only one that sat in theater yelling..."Throw the damned ring Frodo, just throw the ring." So while we had the same MCs in each book we had a whole new series of events and weren't kept waiting for answers, so in fact no cliffhangers. Each book was a self contained story. But this one...this one was definitely my favorite. There was drama and action...and did I mention shit got blown up...mmm...I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Definitely one of my favorite things about this series was the relationship between Wade and Jericho. It was neither easy nor perfect and there were times that things were definitely one step forward and 3 steps back which only seemed right given that these men stand on opposite sides of the law. I loved the banter between Wade and Jericho and needless to say with each subsequent it just got better and better. I have to admit I'm sorry to see this come to an end.

While the series stands complete as it is the epilogue does leave room for the author to revisit the lives of Wade and Jericho something that I would love to see happen. While I wouldn't list any one book as an all time favorite for this year I can easily see that the series in it's entirety will remain a favorite for me.

Home Fires is the fourth and final book in Kate Sherwood's Common Law series and the series goes out with a bang, as in let's blow sh*t up and it is straight-up magnificent. BTW, I finished the last chapters of Home Fires on a plane, followed up by the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt. It was a perfect combination since Home Fires, similar to The Magnificent Seven, is basically the residents banding together to defend their town against a heavily-armed force - in this case, survivalists / militia marching into Mosely to break some of their group out of jail. Just imagine Wade Granger played by Chris Pratt, and you're in the right frame of mind.

Finally, finally, Wade and Jericho are on the same page. Whatever they end up doing, they're doing it together: "In the future, if Wade was going to be in danger, then Jericho would be right beside him. Keeping him safe, hopefully, but at least doing something, being there for whatever happened, good or bad." But first they need to survive an all-out assault by the militia, complete with grenades, rocket launchers and a little something special cooked up by Wade:
“You didn’t like my ‘run away’ plan. Now don’t tell me you don’t like my ‘blow shit up’ plan, either, or my feelings will be hurt.”
Jericho stared at him for a moment, then shook his head. “I fucking love your ‘blow shit up’ plan. Is there more of it?”
“Maybe.”
“I love you.” The words were out before Jericho knew they were coming, and he panicked a little. “Your plans. Your explosions. Your—” Wade was still so calm, but looking back at him with a light in his eyes, a light that Jericho never, ever wanted to extinguish. “Your you,” he finished. “I love you.”
“And you’re not just saying that because we’re both about to die?”
“Maybe I am. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t true.”
As endings go, this one is perfect. Wade and Jericho get their HEA underway, Sheriff Kayla Morgan kicks some serious butt and shows the FBI how it's done, the townsfolk band together and Nikki might actually get an honest job. You can almost hear the strains of The Magnificent Seven theme (dum-DA-DA-dum, dum-dum-dum-DA-DA-dum) as they stroll down Main Street. 5 stars for the entire series!

This series hinges on the suspense more than the romance, and that suited me just fine. Generally, it moved along in an interesting but not overwhelming clip.

The romance structure was really interesting though. Like really interesting.

I'll say more about that after I lodge one little thing (or more, who knows) about this installment: it was frighteningly reminiscent,a bit too much for me, of militia/etc activity in this country recently. All that to say, the author likely did her homework, but I do not, in any respect, enjoy local LE vs federal vs citizens. That's pretty much isolated to book 4, and there's nothing wrong with it overall per se, except the fact I feel like there are no real heroes and only losers and I'm not really into civil wars going hot. That and an avengers style last stand made me scoff a bit, aside from the fact that so many regular citizens show up which ok I can totally see happening in some regions. But I frankly didn't enjoy the action in this particular installment, by and large, at all. Like I said, too remeniscent, too insidious, and finally too trigger-happy.

but what about the romance

Oh, so glad you asked. I will have to hand it to the author here, the romance was a high level of intense with a slow pace. It was second chance but didn't really rely on the past and flashbacks, but similarly, throughout the story, there isn't much actual on-page time. So why this reader felt so strongly about Jericho (the cop) and Wade (the robber)? I can only say because it was curiously well-executed and incredibly intense emotionally.

"It's not like I'm stupid."

That's an interesting turn of phrase. Because I would definitely say that you're not stupid, overall. But at the same time, it often does seem very much like you're stupid. I mean, from the outside, watching the things you do-I can see how someone might reach the wrong conclusion about your intelligence."

See, the first book established that Jericho, former* (*kind of) hellion returns bc of his father. It's been 15 years and he's changed in the way he channels his energy (for good, whatever he feels that is) his ex-lover Wade had also been successful in channeling his energy, but a while lot of mystery surrounds just what and who is he is involved in... This pretty much hits its climax (ahem, we're all adults here but yes in this case it might have double meaning) in the third installment if I'm keeping them straight, which honestly you should just read this as one book, in this kitchen scene. And all the complications and rewards are there. See there's one thing that Wade is vulnerable about and around, and even Jericho can't really read him. He just has this primal charisma and intense self-reliance that's really well done in this series.

"You didn't like my 'run away' plan. Now don't tell me you don't like my 'blow shit up' plan, either, or my feelings will be hurt."

If you're in the mood for what I can only call "an Omar Little archetype" (because I don't know what it's actually called) A self-serving, but somehow moral, unapologetic mystery of a character with a dash of vigilante who also carefully executes on plans, you'll probably get along with this book.

Jericho is no less interesting by any means but Wade makes the books. And when they are on-page together, even the small doses:🔥

"Which is my good side?"

"All your sides are just fine," Wade reassured him, and it was about more than photographs, about more than any damn thing. Jericho winked at the man he loved and said, "Yours too," and when Wade nodded, he knew they'd come to an understanding.

Home Fires by Kate Sherwood is the fourth book in her must read Common Law Series. This far into the series I don't think I need to recap..Same characters in this book that we have loved throughout the first three.  This story is once again told from Jay's POV as he continues to be an employee of Mosely Sheriff department yet falling back in love with his teenage love and criminal mastermind, Wade.

This. Book. I have so much to say about this book, I know I will forget something.  So let me start out by saying - this book will keep you enthralled from cover to cover as passion runs high between Jericho and Wade...

"If she wants to fire me, she can. But I’ve already told her— or at least I started to— if it comes down to choosing between you and my job, I choose you.”“Yeah?” Wade’s smile was a little softer this time, a little more real. 'Damn, Junior, you can be a real sweet-talker when you try to be.'"

...and Mosely Montana comes under attack! This time though Wade is not involved but rather one who is working with the townspeople and Sheriff to save Mosely - “I never thought I’d say this, Jay , but not every criminal activity in Mosely is connected to Wade Granger. Ninety-five percent of it, yeah. But I think this may have been something from that other five percent.”

Kate Sherwood has written a series that keeps you on your toes. You just never quite know what Wade will do and this story is no different. Matching these two up as lovers was genius on her part as the conflict between right and wrong is something we can all relate to; but, what do you do when you are on one side of the law and the person you live for is on the other?

“Is there some part of you being a cop and me being a robber that you don’t understand, Jay? Of course I didn’t mention that I’d been gunrunning for a seditious militia.”

Sometimes there isn't a clear answer and you just have to follow your heart, which is exactly what Jay does...

"In the future, if Wade was going to be in danger, then Jericho would be right beside him. Keeping him safe, hopefully, but at least doing something, being there for whatever happened, good or bad."

When outside gunrunners and militia threaten to tear apart everything Wade and Jericho just got back, Wade begs Jay to leave...to get in his truck, and drive away with him...

“Fuck what’s right. Fuck every goddamn thing that isn’t you and me.

Jay can't turn off his conscious-he can't just walk away from Kayla and everyone he knows, simply because he is afraid. He wasn't raised that way..he is a Crew Afterall and Crew's don't cower to nobody! Wade, Jay, and the town of Mosely stand up and fight - they refuse to hide.

Who will make it out the other side of the battle? Will Jericho and Wade get their HEA or will it all be blown to hell by some crazy gunrunning militia?

“I fucking love you. You know that, don’t you?” Thankfully, Jericho no longer felt the need to vomit whenever he nodded. “I suspected; I am a detective. But it’s nice to hear it.”

5 Stars and a High Recommendation for this book and the entire series! A must read!!

Home Fires is the final installment of Kate Sherwood’s tetralogy, Common Law – and it is filled with high octane action as the town of Mosely is preparing to defend themselves from the militia fanatics that are going to run down the town to get their friends out of jail. Of course, in the middle of it, is our hero under-sheriff Jericho Crewe who is determined to protect the town, alongside the rest of the Mosely sheriff department, some of citizens, as well as his on-again lover Wade Granger.

Boy, did I LOVE the action part of this book!! Seriously, the moment that Jericho, Kayla, and everyone realize that they are pretty much left alone to defend the town – I was on the edge of my seat!! It is the kind of action-moment that is worth for visual imagery – guns blazing, bullets flying, and of course we have one or two explosions courtesy of Wade.

And Wade is such a badass!! With this series written from Jericho’s perspective, Wade retains a flair of mystery to me as a reader. Much like Jericho, sometimes I wonder if Wade is being genuine or doing his own manipulative way while bending rules here and there to get what he wants. However, there is no doubt in my mind that Wade really does care for Jericho. In this book, Wade has his moment of glory and I loved him for that.

There is a thing or two that I wish has a much ‘concrete’ closure. Now with Jericho is finally ready to be with Wade completely, how are things going with Nikki and the kids? I wish I get a better update on that. I also would like to get a firmer resolution on the corruption case which was introduced in book #1 since it was basically what started everything – in addition to Jericho’s dead father.

In overall this is a SOLID series – and I so loved that epilogue *smile*

So this is it…THE END. *sigh* I don’t do well with goodbyes, so you might will hear me beg for more, more, more eventually.

Home Fires is an action packed ending to Kate Sherwood’s Common Law series. A series I fell hard and fast for. Action and trouble fill every crack and corner of Mosely, Montana. And the town is ready to blow! We get militia this time out! Along with FBI, DEA, and of course—Wade and Jericho (Jay). These two can cause enough trouble of their own, but throw in everything else and…well just hold on to something. It’s one hell of a ride!

There is still an air of unbelievability to Jericho’s character for me. His duty to the town didn’t fit with his whining about his job. He’s a “flip-flopper” and it kept picking away at my imagination and I-believe-you layer of my reading world. But it didn’t really interfere with my love all that much because of Wade frigging Granger. The man got under my skin the very first book and stayed there. I couldn’t get a’hold of him no matter how hard I tried—hell we still don’t know where he lives! This mysterious man wrapped in grey & black is a sweet & sexy puzzle. One I want to continue to put together. We get to see a lot more pieces of him in this book though--pieces of his past and heart. His regrets and loyalty show up full force in this installment. Wade will do anything for his Jay and he proves it here at every turn. He is one man I wouldn’t mind seeing more of. Jericho, on the other hand, I just want to slap upside the head. Haha….in a loving way of course, but wow! Jericho is clueless sometimes. These guys were made for each other. A need and balance and tension like no other. I loved their crazy corner of the world. :D

This explosive read will have you craving more. And here we go, let the begging begin in 3, 2, 1….I need MORE! Please!!!

Read this series.

Get ready for the final installment. Expected pub date 4/3/17!

This is a story about second chance love.
This is a story about cops and robbers.
This is a story about friends and family.

This is a story about black and white - and the endless shades of grey in between.

Homes Fires is the last book in Kate Sherwood's Common Law series.

The series is a single story. The books should be read in order. But, now that they are all out, it will be easy to go from one to the other. In fact, it will be hard not to.

Wade and Jericho are two complex men. Their story is both captivating and frustrating at times. But the underlying undying love flies off the pages.

Don't go into this series expecting a lot of on-page, graphic sex scenes. In fact, some books have none at all. Instead, you'll find MC's who are real and tough and loyal. You might want to beat their heads together sometimes, but you'll never stop rooting for true love to conquer all.

It’s action all the way in this final showdown in Mosely last book in the series. So you could say Jericho and Wade go out with a bang in all senses of the word. Jericho can still not bring himself to leave town or the force his attachment to Wade is just too strong now after all they have been through.

I loved the way this relationship developed through the series. Although former teenage lovers at school after Jericho left Mosely their lives took on very different paths and you could say turned them into very different adults. However, the attraction has never died and they just had to fond a way back to each other that would work for both seeing they began anew on opposite sides of the law. Wade for me was never really an evil, bad guy. He always had his redeeming points but you just never knew whether to trust him completely or not. So I could totally understand Jericho’s dilemma, better to approach things with a good portion of caution rather than rushing in where angels fear to tread. However, this can put an unimaginable strain on any relationship. We see how they gradually grow together but in so doing how their attitudes and outlook on events and their lives change too. Both having a strong influence on the other just like in any relationship the longer you are together the more it forms your character.

In this final instalment there is still trouble in the hills which leads Mosely to being the scene of a final shoot out, almost battle if you will between the residents and militia. Half the state forces including the DEA and FBI have been called in they all have to find a way to work together and put aside their petty rivalries if they are going to end the border trafficking for once and for all. Kayla of course is key in having to do a mammoth task of straddling both sides of the opposing views and forces and does a sterling job. What a woman. Yes, I would have her as a boss any day! She displays a strength of character which is inspirational, always tough but fair even though she is coping with her own personal dramas with her father? Reconciliation is still needed here and it does come in the most unexpected way. It’s amazing when a town folk are threatened by outside forces it seems to bring the whole community together. It’s just sad that it has to take such an event as this to pull the community together but I guess this has always been the way of things.

I never thought living near a border town could be such a den of crime but I guess if you have people smuggling whatever between countries then it would seem a flourishing business for such a town, Again I was left with the question in just how far Wade is involved in this operation. we know he is but not to truly to what extent and then the remaining question is on what side will he come down on when having to choose one or the other. Well, needless to say these questions were answered and thank goodness Wade makes the right decision in my opinion. So where does Wade and Jericho go from here? Well, the both make the only decision that is really open to them if they are going to make a go of having a steady relationship. How do they do this? Well, you will have to read the series but I found it a very suitable way for these two guys and think they have a chance of now making a go of a future together.

Kate Sherwood has delivered a wonderful series which more gets a solid four stars all the way. Each book is intriguing on the plot and mysteries to be solved whilst we observe how Jericho and Wade lead a merry dance around each other but closing the gap between them in each consecutive book. Also Jericho’s problem with his newly discovered siblings and his step mum seems to find at least for now some form closure and resolution. All four books are plot driven and very light on the erotic but this is what I loved about the series. When the sex happens it’s HAWT! But it is used sparingly to add to the story, peppered throughout at the right moments. All in all for fans of strong plots and mystery / thrillers I can recommend this series with no qualms.

Wade Granger is so bad-assed! *heart eyes*

This fourth and last installment in this series was a fast-paced adventure. The beginning of this finds Wade and Jericho committed to being together no matter how different they may be. Their little town ends up being the site of a major battle between law enforcement and the bad guys. Needless to say both of them are involved in a major way.

I don't want to say much about the plot due to spoilers but I will say that I loved how things ended up for these two. They get their much deserved hea and I as a reader loved every minute of it.

This should not be read as a standalone. The books in this series are all pretty short but they should be read in order. This is one of the only m/m romantic suspense series I've read and since it's one of my favorite genres I was really excited to find this. It's low on steam but the UST and chemistry between these two is fantastic. I loved all four of the books and I highly recommend this series.

We're in the homestretch with the Common Law series and I'm dragging my feet because I don't want it to be over. I've enjoyed my time with Jericho, Wade, and the rest of the quirky citizens of Mosely, Montana. Things have been building to a point for Jericho and he has some big decisions to make if only those pesky heavily armed militia folks weren't building a revolution back in the hills.

Home Fires is the fourth and final installment of the Common Law featuring the detecting adventures of Jericho Crewe once wild-child and now under-sheriff of the county.

Each book in the series has had a dual focus. There's a case for Jericho to solve and the ongoing story of Jericho's personal life as he comes to terms with who he is and what he wants now that he's laying the past to rest.

Enigmatic Wade whose moral compass doesn't always point true North is still a good man, Jericho's teenage lover and best friend and now they are becoming something more as far as Jericho is concerned. He's not hiding what they have together and he's done trying to figure out how to make it work. It will just work- The crook and the cop. I thought it worked rather well.

The militia war angle got things into a pretty exciting and intensive situation. Kay's on shaky ground with the citizens of Mosely because her dad's a crooked past sheriff and someone's using this as his chance to push his way into office, but lord love her, that woman took care of business like a champ. Loved how Jericho, for all his contrariness is a good cop and Marine and this last installment calls for both skills. He's the one that figures out just why things aren't adding up and where it's all going. The crisis moments when he had to make tough choices and then later when he just went all Rambo were the perfect pinnacle for this series.

I loved where things were at in the end for Jericho and Wade. And hsst, Kate, I would be perfectly fine if it all just kept on rolling with more of Jericho and Wade off in their new direction.

In summary, fab series, no reservations. Those who enjoy slow build romance, well-crafted characters, and a good mystery should give this four part m/m Romantic Suspense series a go.

My thanks to Riptide Publishing for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

A great ending to this series- Jericho & Wade finally find their pace together and work collectively to save the town. The lines blur between police/ criminal and the focus is in what's best for the town. This was a great way to bring everyone onto the same page and to fight for what was theirs. Again the chemistry between these two was great but the heat & steam factor was ridiculously low - all this fade to black was frustrating. It would have been good to have heard Wades POV as the book was all Jerichos but perhaps this may have taken away the secret side of Wade ? Certainly a very good series😊

**Grumbles**, it was far better in the romance department then all the other books in the series. Still LOW STEAM, no actual physical stuff in the book more low key. I am still not happy with my romance being such low end on the totem pole. With this book I guess I should be happy that it was forthcoming as it was. Home Fires wraps up a lot of the story lines that we needed answered. Jericho & Wade finally come to a head sort to speak. They were a lot more forthcoming with one another, and I guess when lives are at stake then being present about your love in front of others wouldn't mean anything to you. Declaring your love for each other seemed like pulling teeth at times, and now it was really refreshing to see them accept love in any form.

I really enjoyed the action that this book packed! Everything was busy from the very beginning, and I will say the ending felt a little off. I will say my fruition about Wade didn't come true. I'm still not clear on what he was really doing, since it wasn't a big showdown with him, and I wanted his business to be a little outed. I mean, he was amazing in this series, and we don't get to see him actually be such a badass. We kinda assume all these things about him, but nothing is either confirm. Jericho, I'm glad you got some semblance of happiness. I really would have like to see more of an epilogue with him and his siblings. I would have liked to see a future for them possibly.

I'm just reaching now. I've enjoyed the overall experience of this series. I want closure on certain things that I've explained above, but I am happy with the outcome. I think people will enjoy this series, and its a recommend from me!

Full review to come soon! Home Fires is the 4th and final book in the Common Law series by Kate Sherwood. I wouldn't recommend reading these ones out of order as there are continuing storylines throughout the series and you may be lost. The Common Law series follows Jericho and Wade. Two men on different sides of the law, with some history between the two of them. When they were younger they were friends, and then lovers until Jericho left town. Now that's his back in his home town he's having a hard time fighting his feelings for Wade even though he isn't sure if he can trust him.

Love, Love, LOVE the way the series was wrapped up. There isn't one thing that I would change. This final book just made me love Wade even more than I already did. In this series, he's always been really mysterious and you are always trying to figure out what his real agenda is. But in this book you start to see the other, more vulnerable side of Wade. I didn't doubt him for a second!

Home Fires has a lot more action than the other books in the series. It is almost nonstop action from the beginning to end. All of these books are fairly short so I was able to read this one in one sitting. Thank godness, because I wouldn't have been able to put it down. I needed to know what was going to happen. I like that there are no lose ends at the end of this one. The end was really satisfying. Great little series!

4.5 stars- The Sendoff They Deserve

I’m not sure what it is about this couple, but I really like them and am always eager to see where their adventures land them. Once again we hit the ground running with the opening scene of Home Fires rushing Jericho to respond to “shots fired” incident. I was immediately reminded how well this author writes high adrenaline scenes, just enough details to convey the picture and a style that reinforces the urgency of the moment. There were a few peak moments that got my heart racing, with the closing battle certainly worthy of a series finale. I enjoyed all the action scenes, the strategizing, and the partnerships we saw take shape and cement in this installment. The conflicts played out to full resolutions; though there was a bit of intrigue left surrounding certain aspects- particularly Wade’s business dealings. I liked that the author left some parts open ended, but still gave me an ending I’ve been waiting for.

The last book included a lot more playful dialogue between Jericho and secondary characters and we got more of it in Home Fires. I love seeing these parts of his personality increasingly come out as the series continued. It highlighted his cynical side, developed his character, and made the connection to Wade more apparent. I really liked the interactions between Wade and Jericho in the final book. Both men move toward cementing the relationship and it gave me a future to hope for while I read all the hair-raising action scenes. There was a lot more Wade in general in this book, and I loved it. Sherwood offered a range of depth to his personality when she previously only gave glimpses. The chemistry was still there and I felt the emotional pull between the men. However, it didn’t have as much of a desperate feel to their relationship in this one. Initially, I missed this tension, but it ended up being perfect. It imparted a sense of settling, like Wade and Jericho were no longer fighting to get to a future but working toward making it a tangible reality.

Although finishing the fourth book in the Common Law series was bittersweet, I can’t help but feel complete. This was a great capping to a great series I thoroughly enjoyed. Home Fires delivered the secondary character relationships, the crazy camaraderie of Mosely, dialogue laced with sarcasm that made me laugh, adrenaline laden action scenes, and of course the combustible relationship of Wade and Jericho. I expected nothing less than these men to go out with a bang, and I got it…a few times over.

My Review:
Hands down, this was my favorite of the series. OMG, this book was so good. The whole series has been good, but this one surpassed all the others. There was a TON of action and emotion...and yeah, there were even moments when I was laughing out loud in the middle of all the drama. I love where these two guys have gotten in their relationship. There's an ease to them that wasn't in the last three novels that showed up in this one. So, so good. Seriously, this story blew me away.

In this book there's a new threat that comes into this small little town via the local militia. Everything about how this drama unfolded had me standing up and cheering. All the characters that have shown up throughout the series, showed up in this one and in the very best way. I loved how it all came together.

But the best thing about this book is where Wade and Jericho are together. Finally, they are truly together and being honest about that. They aren't hiding anything. There's a familiarity and a new level of happiness between them that made this book so good to read. I loved it so much. It just made me happy for having read it.

And, and, and...there's not much more I can say about this book without giving away spoilers. This is a series of four books that builds on the story in each book. It's a very slow build and burn, but I loved this series so, so much. (Note: this series is VERY mild sexually...this final book has a bit more heat than the other three have, but it's still very mild...more fade to black kind of scenes.) But despite that I loved this series so much. Wade and Jericho are an unlikely couple. They shouldn't be able to make it work, but shades of gray...seriously. Kate Sherwood wrote an amazing series of books and I highly recommend the entire series. You do not want to miss out.

Now...can we talk about that epilogue? Please let us have a spinoff series. I'm not ready to give up Wade and Jericho yet, and I'd love to follow that thread further. It would be so, so good... *please*
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

A great ending to a great series. The build-up to the climax has excellent pacing with lots of action and suspense and some surprises from Jericho and Wade. I loved how it all played out. Wouldn’t mind reading more about these guys, but this is a very satisfying play out for them.

Loved this ending to the exciting and mysterious series! We finally get some answers and much more of the sexy Wade! Don't want to give too much away, but suffice to say, this installment was worth the wait. If you're looking for something a bit different, definitely pick this one up. :)

I have commented enough on the previous instalments to be spared the burden of yet another lengthy review. Suffice it to state that I am now done with Mrs Sherwood; no more shall I read anything that comes from her pen, given the utter literary miscarriage, which it would not be wrong to alternatively label as glorified garbage, that was Home Fires. The formula behind this book, the weakest in the tetralogy, allows no character or plot development beyond the two leads getting to shoot the heck out of armed thugs parading as survivalists and Wade showing off the kind of heroics and proficiency with firearms that would reduce to tears John McClane and Jason Bourne taken together. For a main character about whom not much was ever disclosed beyond grandstanding statements seldom if ever rooted in fact (less than a page into the story, Kayla deadpans "I never thought I’d say this, Jay, but not every criminal activity in Mosely is connected to Wade Granger. Ninety-five percent of it, yeah. But I think this may have been something from that other five percent"), and a series that never managed to strike a passable means between low-heat romance and suspense in redneck country, botching both in the process, this much credibility-straining pyrotechnics without the least bit of foreshadowing - this instalment relates to the previous one in the faintest fashion; in no occasion was any literary groundwork laid down that could to make it believable that the secluded, seldom mentioned group had the capability of becoming such a threat, let alone that it would mount a Rio Bravo-type operation against the Mosely law enforcement - verges on the grotesque. How could one derive entertainment from the crazy antics of protagonists who are two big kids and their dealings with a secondary casting that is either cardboard-y enough to qualify as plywood or still as fake and irritating as ever (Kayla, Nikki and her brood, the DEA agent)? In every respect, Home Fires really hits rock bottom; Mrs Sherwood scrapped the barrel for one final book. Farewell to Jay and Wade; you will not be remembered fondly.

Definitely a satisfying ending to this series. Honestly I've struggled to grasp exactly what these two see in each other aside from their romance when they were young. We don't get to see a lot of intimacy between these two in any of the books and they spend a lot of time fighting and making up. They have chemistry but I would have liked to have seen a few more tender moments between them. What this book did have was a lot of action (though it's hard to believe a town this size would have this much crime and that many federal agents running around) and two men who do grow throughout. By the end I felt like Jericho was a little less messed up and Wade was a little more able to be honest with Jericho. I'll be honest in book one I didn't see how these two could possibly make it work but through the changes in both of them and all the things that happened I could buy it by the end of this book. Definitely not a book that can be read as a stand alone.

Home Fires, Common Law 4,  Kate Sherwood

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  romance, LGBTQIA

This is an amazing wrap up to what's been a beautiful quartet, fabulous characters, not just Wade and Jericho (Jay) but so many others, plots that feel so real, and events that are characteristic of small town life.
I’m really sad to see these guys go, and yet I guess there’s potential for Wade and Jay Mark 2. Somehow though I think maybe best to stop at the top – I’ve felt not ready to leave characters before and then author has written more books and they never seem to have that first magic.
Kate is certainly an author that gets searched for now by me, I really enjoy the way she puts a story together, and how each of these reads has ended without cliff hangers (my bugbear) but still had me wanting the next book.
I was really lucky here getting ARCs, as I got the last two together so Tuesday saw me finishing third book, Wed I wrote review and cracked on to book four. With everything fresh in my mind it was such a  great read.
I love to read whole series in one back to back sweep for that very reason, total immersion into the story and characters.

What could I pick out from this book? Wade – I’ve loved him from the start, he’s so enigmatic, so quiet and yet so clever he seems to know what’s going to happen, when and what to do about it.
I get the feeling he’s not exactly a criminal, though the law has been trying to tie him to many crimes, but that he’s one of those guys that sees what needs doing and gets on with it. If that means crossing a few legal issues so be it. Not in the vigilante style, he’s more of a preventative person than a pursuer of justice, if that comes along then great but if not, well he’s not worried.

Jay – a staunch believer in the Law, he’s been in the Army and seen service in some terrible places, been a city cop where life was always busy and he didn't have time to ponder and worry, and now he’s back in Montana, wondering if he and Wade can have something together after all this while.
He’s learning to trust Wade too, to see he’s not just the criminal in waiting his colleagues seem to think.
The sensuality between them is incredible and yet for most of the while its just been looks and quick touches, though it finally heats up here when Jay decides he doesn’t care any more, he wants to be with Wade, and isn’t bothered who knows it.
He’s always been open about his sexuality, but with Wade there’s the history they share – along with Kayla – and the little fact that most of his colleagues feel Wade is on the opposing side of the Law to Jay.
What I love is they're just ordinary guys, people we could know, live with, work with, meet in the pub. There's no big I'm Gay placard hanging over their mannerisms, no cliched Tells as so many books make. That's what I love, it emulates real life where sometimes its obvious someone is gay through their actions, in the same way sometimes its obvious someone is a bigot, but most of the while people are just people, gay or not is just another facet of their character, not the defining one. And I'll stop drum banging now :-)

There’s some real action in this book, a few deaths too, and a feeling of satisfaction tinged with sadness when its over.
As so often happens maybe if things had been done differently, if the top brass listened to the locals....but life is full of What Ifs, and speculation can’t change results.
I love the mix of small town policing v out of town Important Top Cops ( well seems to be how they regard themselves)
There’s a point where the out of towners, the alphabet cops, are busily engrossed in stopping an upcoming conflict, a mass rally of MC people with guns, rockets, tanks even, and they’re keeping the locals out. Jay is so irritated and Kayla says words to the effect of “go and do some paper work”, or “see if Mr x is trapping the neighbours cats again”, somewhat sarcastically. They know the others are being hoodwinked, yet all their efforts to say so get ignored with a “leave it to the pros “ kind of pat on the head. Kayla and Jay are so frustrated and using irony about the realities of small town policing. Probably for 99.9% of the time it is like that, but when it really matters, and they have the local knowledge to make a difference, save lives, pre-empt disaster and they’re being shut out they’re both upset but stuck.

A perfect quartet of novels for those readers who want a tender and sensual romance, action and drama but situated in a small town with locals involved, plots that are full of characters that feel real, that have connections, where the law isn’t black and white but shades of grey (50?? Maybe... but no sex accoutrements here. Just solid characters with real emotions).
Each book is complete but together they make up a wider story. I’ve just reread my review of the first book, and my thoughts about the series back then are interesting, and have pretty much played out as i expected.
Its been a series that will definitely be a re-reader for me.

Stars: Five, a fabulous end to the series, perfect wrap up.

Review for Just Love Reviews

The final book of this series and I’m sad to see it end. Trouble really does come to Mosely Montana this time around. Jericho and Wade have a lot to deal with on top of their relationship issues, and it’s an fun and exciting ride.

For the story itself, I enjoyed the suspense of it and the anxious feelings I had not knowing how things were going to play out. The moments of tension when I was not sure what Wade was going to do, and when all hope seemed lost… those were the best times. The way the town is involved in this finale was also so much fun. I really like the way everything comes full circle, too. Full circle for Jericho and Wade, especially.

For Jericho and Wade themselves? Le Sigh… what can I say? I really like them as individual characters, but I like them together even more. They each bring out something in the other that would normally not shine. For Wade, Jericho keeps him honest. Not just in his money making dealings, but in life in general. For Jericho, Wade sort of messes him up a bit. They both really counter each other well and it’s made me a huge fan of them.

While I started out on book one not so sure about the series and where it was going to go, I’m sold now. Recommended.

I received an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is the perfect conclusion to a wonderfully original series. Smuggling and biker gangs are the least of the Mosely, Montana Sheriff Department’s problems when an armed militia decides to take on the FBI. And somehow, Jericho and Wade find themselves at the centre of the ensuing chaos.

The first three books set up the characters and relationships that define Jericho and Wade’s small border town and this final book pulls everything together with dark humour and a couple of thrilling action scenes. There are even a few softer moments between Jericho and Wade. By this fourth story, I really loved everyone in Mosely. Kayla is wonderful. Her deputies and the DEA agents are mostly almost useful this time round.

I live in a country where even police officers don’t carry guns so the shootouts between law enforcement and civilians armed with things like RPGs were difficult for me to wrap my head around. I know from news stories that Americans have guns and they do like to use them so the action in this book might not be as unrealistic as it felt. Realistic or not, the action scenes are exciting and thoroughly entertaining. Wade is a grumpy, sarcastic and creative anti-hero and I absolutely loved him by the time the dust settled.

I have enjoyed every moment of Jericho and Wade’s charming and frustrating non-romance through all four books but even with fifty pages left to go, I had no idea how Jericho the cop and Wade the criminal were ever going to make a life together. The answer in the epilogue is absolutely perfect.

I would recommend this series highly to anyone looking for something fresh and original. This dark, gritty and quirky series doesn’t sit neatly within a genre but I’m so glad I found it.

I just loved this series and bought each book the day it came out.
I liked the characters. I thought the progression of the relationship over the course of the four books was believable - tricky considering one was a cop and the other a criminal.
I thought the author did a good job with the world-building and I felt like I could really visualize the setting.
What a treat to find this series.

I'm going to miss Jericho & Wade. I didn't know I was going to enjoy this story so much that I even didn't mind all the sex off page (yeah ok, I DO mind a little bit... XD).

Wade is finally ready to leave Mosely but despite his determination to quit, Jericho is reluctant to leave Kayla in the lurch. The town is in real trouble from out of town survivalist fanatics and help is a long way off.

I really enjoyed this series and Wade and Jericho finally get their HEA so all is good with me, it was a long time coming, in book time not real time. Loved it!
