Sequel to Smoke & Mirrors
Book Eight

In a matter of days, Dex has been kidnapped, tortured, killed, revived, become half Therian, offered the chance to become a spy, and accepted a proposal to marry his jaguar Therian boyfriend, Sloane Brodie. It’s been a lot to take in, and although Dex is still trying to wrap his head around everything that’s happened, he knows he has to move forward.

After the events of Smoke & Mirrors, Dex and Sloane find themselves in one of the most frightening situations of revealing the truth to their Destructive Delta family. When the dust settles, nothing will ever be the same, and it’s up to Dex to prove that in the face of change, the one thing that will always remain the same is family.

Third re-read: 11.07.2021
I'm really looking forward to TIN series with Dex and Sloane. I'm glad their story isn't over. Still hate Sparks and hope Dex takes her down in TIN. If we ever get that series....

Second re-read: 11.03.2020
I truly don't like the thought of Sparks and Tony. Seriously. I don't like Sparks, not after everything she's put Dex through. Hobbs and Dex's scene yet again brought tears in my eyes. Hobbs just seems to innocent and I just want to hug him. That being said, I'm glad this book is kinda short since I'm still struggling with focusing.

Re-read: 11.06.2019
I adore Dex and Sloane. I really do. I also absolutely adore Dex and Hobbs friendship. Hobbs is so freaking cute! I'm so excited for TIN series. I wonder if we'll be seeing a lot of Destructive Delta team in that series, or if we'll just be seeing Dex and Sloane. I don't really care either way as I'm just happy we get more D & S. Still don't like Sparks though. And I definitely don't like her with Tony. On to the next re-read which will be the last as I'm skipping the books that doesn't center D & S.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Can Contain Spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

First read review:
Book eight is a short one centering Dexter ‘Dex’ Justice Daley (35? 36? How old are they now?!) Defense Agent for Destructive Delta (used to be a homicide detective; the Human Police Force) and his Team Leader Sloane Brodie (37? 38? 39?), who's also his jaguar Therian partner and fiancé. The isn't exactly necessary as it's too short, however, that doesn't mean it isn't important. Because it is. This short book guides where the series will continue; quite a turning point for the whole team. Also, Dex is trying to make sense of the fact that he's half Therian; has Sloane's DNA in him.
“Yeah, you like that? Who’s the apex predator now?”
Sloane laughed. “Is that what you think?” Sloane’s inner Felid stirred at the challenge. Dex might be part Therian now, but there was only one Alpha in this room, and it was Sloane.
With a growl, Sloane pushed back hard, making Dex gasp and distracting him long enough to pull off Dex, turn, and grab Dex’s arm. He jerked Dex down onto the mattress on his back, grinning smugly as he pushed Dex’s legs up against his chest and held him down.

As we found out in book seven, Sloane and Dex has decided to take Sparks up on her offer and become TIN operatives, and this book is showing how the two is telling the team and their reaction. Hobbs and Ash's reaction was the ... hardest and best. I adore Hobbs and I love Sloane and Ash's friendship. Overall, it was a cute, but way too short book. I wish we had gotten more of Tony with his kids. I also don't like Tony with Sparks. It just doesn't feel right. Tony deserves much more; Sparks is definitely up to something. Oh and do we get to see the weeding?
He’d meant what he said. He would always have his dad’s back, and he was okay with Sparks sleeping with Tony. His father was a grown-ass man who could do whatever the hell he pleased. It was all good.
At least until Dex figured out her angle. When he did—and he would—Dex was going to bury her.
Sparks could fuck with him all she wanted, and she had. She’d fucked with him and Sloane and their team, but the moment she fucked with his family, all bets were off. She thought she knew him, and that would work to his advantage.
Dex sank his claws into the couch cushion. In time he would find out what Sparks was up to, and by then he’d be TIN. She was going to train him, break him down, and turn him into one of her weapons. And he was going to let her. Then he would make her regret it. Sonya Sparks was responsible for the operative he was about to become—and for her own downfall. Where his family was concerned, Dex was always ready to go to war.

Other Characters:
Anthony ‘Tony’ ‘Sarge’ ‘Sergeant’ ‘Sir’ Maddock, Dex's adoptive father and a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron (Destructive Delta) otherwise known as the THIRDS.
→ THIRDS Destructive Delta Agent Tech Expert, Cael Maddock (27?), Dex's adoptive little brother and a cheetah Therian. Rosa Santiago, his human partner and Destructive Delta's crisis negotiator and medic. Both Recon agents.
“Cael—”
“If you weren’t ready to be serious about the two of you, you shouldn’t have marked him.”
The words were like a slap to the face, especially since the same thought had shamefully crossed his mind. He’d been so sure…. No. He was sure.

Ash Keeler, a lion Therian and Destructive Delta's entry tactics and CQC expert, and his human partner, Julietta ‘Letty’ Guerrera, their weapons expert. Ash's also Sloane's best friend. Ash and Cael finally got together in book five.
Ethan Hobbs, a Therian Tiger and Destructive Delta's sniper and his human partner and lover, Calvin ‘Cal’ Summers, their demolitions expert. Hobbs suffers from Selective Mutism and Social Anxiety.
Rafe (the oldest brother), Team Leader for Alpha Ambush and Tiger Therian and Sebastian ‘Seb’ (middle brother), Agent for Theta Destructive newly promoted to Team Leader for Theta Destructive. Was once on Destructive Delta but was transferred after his relationship to Hudson ended in a breach of protocol and civilian loss. Is a Tiger Therian. Both Hobbs’s big brothers. We learned in book six that Rafe has gotten the Therian Acheron Syndrome as their father..
→ Dr. Nina Bishop, THIRDS Destructive Delta’s medical examiner and a human. Rafe and Nina are together.
→ Dr. Hudson Colbourn, THIRDS chief medical examiner, and a Canis Lupus (wolf) Therian.
→ Lieutenant Sonya Sparks, for THIRDS Unit Alpha and a Cougar Therian. Partner to human Tony. Sparks is part of TIN—Therian Intelligence Network; as an undercover operative . Sort of the Therian version of the CIA. They exist, but technically they don’t. Austen, the SSAs works for them.
Louis ‘Lou’ Huerta, Dex's ex-boyfriend of four years.
→ THIRDS Agent Ellis Taylor, Team Leader of Beta Ambush, and leopard Therian.
Osmond Zachary ‘Zach’, Agent for Alpha Sleuth in Unit Beta and brown bear Therian. Has six brothers working for the THIRDS.
Bradley Darcy, bartender and owner of Bar Dekatria and Jaguar Therian.
Austen Payne (23? 24?), Squadron Specialist Agent (SSA) for Destructive Delta and a Cheetah Therian. Is a undercover freelance operative for TIN (Therian Intelligence Network).
→ Dr. Abraham Shultzon, was the head doctor during the First Gen Recruitment Program who was personally responsible for the wellbeing of the THIRDS’ First Gen Recruits. He was also responsible for the tests that were run on the Therian children. He was recently (book five) apprehended by TIN for creating an unsanctioned Therian mind control drug, and for kidnapping THIRDS Therian agents for unsanctioned project.
→ Admiral Abbott Moros, Chief of Therian Defense. Tiger Therian.
Mr. ‘Wolf’ aka ‘Fang’ ‘Reaper’, a wolf Therian who called himself Mr. Wolf, but that’s just one of many aliases. He’s a freelance professional. One of the best. Former TIN operative turned rogue. Wolf became a freelance agent for hire after feeling he was betrayed by TIN, the organization that caused the death of his partner.
Milena Stanek, antiques acquisitions. Rosa’s girlfriend. Leopard Therian.
→ Dr. ‘Scotty the Hottie’, Tony's doctor after he was shot in the previous book. A tiger Therian. He’s Scottish.
“Ash mentoring, Sloane training newbies, and Dex being a spy? Can’t wait to see how that turns out.”

Warning - spoilers from Book 7.

I am a huge fan of this series, but I might be at a point where I'm kinda done. I feel like I'm really not getting anything new anymore. That's not to say that there aren't new plot points - there are - but it's still feels same ol' to me.

The first few books in the series were magic. Laugh out loud funny, awesome relationship angst with a great relationship-building that was anything but insta-love. But now that Dex and Sloane have settled into their coupledom, I'm just not invested anymore. And I'm sad about that.

Book 7 ended with a plot point with TIN that I wasn't exactly happy about. And Book 8, a novella, does a good job of explaining and cleaning up (a tad) of that plot point. But it was just kinda tied in a neat little bow that I didn't really buy.

My biggest hurdle, personally, is that the writing skirts the edge of too sugary sweet and cheesy. Nothing overt, but definitely not the edge of grit (or full-on grit) that I like. And the further we get into the series, the more the dialogue feels like a Lifetime movie or After School Special. It's too damn sweet. That's a personal preference, of course, but it's how I feel.

Unfortunately, I think I'm out. Which sucks. But there you have it.

Original review February 2017:

I will make it short: I loved it!

Okay, probably not that short. ;-) This series never ceases to amaze me....

After all this time you would think that I would be fed up with it by now, that it would loose its appeal at some point and to be honest, with each new book I fear that the time has come. Slowly but surely, though, it seems to me that this will never be the case. I just cannot get enough of it.

After the events in Smoke & Mirrors I could not get my grabby hands fast enough on this book and it was all I could have wished for. Yes, it felt like some kind of interlude, but that was the idea behind it, to prepare us for things to come. For the change that was already initiated in the previous book.

The story -albeit a bit shorter this time- was the familiar mix of action, humor, sexy times, some heartwarming scenes and Dex-antics, sometimes paired with thoughtfulness due to his new found Therian abilities still in its infancy and the impact this would have on those around him.

I so will never get tired of the banter between Dex and Ash!!!

The interaction between the teammates was amazing as always, although they had to break down some barriers when Dex and Sloane put their cards on the table and all secrets were out, but when it comes down to it, they act like the one big family they are and get everything sorted out in typical Destructive Delta manner.

In other words: it had everything I love about this series, plus a tinge of nostalgia when Dex recalls events that led them to this point until they reached some kind of crossroads. And that the love story between Dex and Sloane remains one of my favorites goes without saying.

I still love Dex.

Originally read August 2018

Nice filler book in between the others. Ash had yet another asshole moment...just when I was starting to like him. But then you can see what’s going on. Glad to see he actually has some feelings. But I did feel like Dex is starting to loose the part of his personality I love so much. I also feel like the series is getting really angsty. I’m thinking a break is in order from my bingeing.

1 Star for the Audio -- 4 Stars for the Story!
Let me preface with the fact that I love this series and it is one of my few favorites, so when the opportunity came for me to listen to it, I grabbed it right up! Suffice it to say, despite having listened to over 150 various audios and podfics, it was quite clear that this audio and I would not be getting along. Unfortunately, Mark Westfield is just not for me which of course, sucks. However, everyone’s likes and dislikes are different, so I simply urge you to sample well before buying anything!!

Again, I have to hand it to Cochet. This novella where Dex and Sloane deal with the aftermath of several hard core reveals from Smoke & Mirrors was the perfect gift as we anxiously wait for book 9.

Never shorting the reader on the humor, the emotions, the things that make each character so distinct and special, this was another great installment with a special shout out to Cael, Ash, and Hobbes.

I said Smoke & Mirrors was a total game changer and the start of something new and extraordinary for favorite couple Dex & Sloane, and I was right. Cochet has ingeniously put in place a setup that could take forever to resolve. Absolutely no complaints here!! Bring it!

I love Mark Westfield's narration for this series! I have yet to be disappointed by his narration of one of the THIRDS books. It's got great character voices and good pacing...I just pop in my ear buds and then sit back, relax, and enjoy.

I look forward to more THIRDS action - especially on audio!

Note: For the sticklers be warned - Westfield doesn't give Hudson an English accent for some reason and his voice for Cael is different than in the rest of the series. He also has audible intakes of breath before speaking - often.

Taking place immediately following the events of Smoke & Mirrors, this story follows Dex and Sloane telling the team about the changes in Dex and, ultimately, about the changes to come to Destructive Delta.
“I know we’re the ones pushing this change, but we’re in this together. We always have been, and we always will be. Whatever happens, whatever you need, Sloane and I will be there for you.”

This series just keeps getting better. I had quite a few questions at the end of Smoke & Mirrors, particularly regarding Dex's motives and was really happy they are looked at more in depth in this short, but action packed, installment.

It's got a lot packed in it, but it's all done with cohesion, and also sets up the series for what's to come.
Their future might be uncertain, but one thing wasn’t— no matter what happened or what they faced, they had a family to come back to, one that grew stronger with every passing day. Destructive Delta wasn’t just a team. It wasn’t a badge or a patch on their sleeve. It was home.

As for me? I can't wait to get more THIRDS action!

Best quote from the book? "Yeah, you like that? Who's the apex predator now?" oh my god, so funny! Dex coming to grips with his new alpha self *grins* but Sloane puts him back in his place. There are so many great moments with these guys dealing with all the changes and it is all handled really well. (I can't wait to hear Mark Westfield read it to me.)

A good bridge between the rest of the series and the new directions these guys are heading.

Was the story great ? Hmmm well not as good as others, it lacked some depth but were the characters great ? YES !
I love Dex & Sloane and their easy banter and strong chemistry means they could be in a damn laundromat and I'd still love them. There's something about their connection, it's honest, genuine and loyal. Of course Cael "Chirpy" is adorable and the love he and Dex have for each other is beautiful- the fact that Ash loves Cael so much is even more sweet. I guess the episode doesn't really matter for me, I just love the interaction between the Destructive Delta team ❤

This novella starts right after the ending of book 7, "Smoke and Mirrors". To me, it kind of felt like an epilogue of the last book. All the things that were left wide open, get wrapped up in this little installment.

We get to know more about the changes that Dex went through and what gonna happen now that Dex and Sloane have decided to join TIN. It also shows us how the team responds to all of these changes and to the news that Sloane and Dex are about to be married.

iqXC6aY.png (357×500):

This novella was informative and very sweet, to the point of even being a bit cheesy. Now there is nothing wrong with some cheesiness every now and then, but I have always enjoyed Sloane being a badass and he came off as a love-struck puppy in this book. I'm mostly oke with this, because it's an in between novella, but I do hope we will get more of his old bad-assed self in the next books.

be-a-badass-gym-quote-mugs-drinkware-full-color-mug.jpg (300×300):

I'm also not sure about how I feel about Dex not being fully human anymore. I liked his character just fine the way he was..... We will just have to see where this development will go.

What I missed most though was the action and the fun. There wasn't anything in this novella that made me laugh out loud. Dex just wasn´t his funny self...

giphy.gif (500×371)

As an in between novella, this was a nice read. I enjoyed it, just not as much as all the other books. I do hope we will get some more action and laughs and maybe Dekatria in the next books. I´m  very curious about Seb and Hudson´s relationship. I have always loved Hudson, so I can´t wait for their story !!

The next book has very mixed reviews so I’m taking a Christmas romance break.

This was funny interlude for THIRDS Destructive Delta. After everything that happened to the team and Tony, both Dex and Sloane decide to join TIN. This book follows exactly after the events of the previous one and shows how Dex and Sloane tell it all to their friends. It's at times heart-breaking, at times it's sweet and hilarious. But they are in this together, and Team Delta will follow Dex and Sloane to the end. That's what family does after all.

Like a bridge over troubled waters...

'Thick & Thin' is the 8th installment in Charlie Cochet's series THIRDS and for me it was more of a bridge linking what's happened to the changes that are about to happen and the new direction that things seem to be going in.

It wrapped up some things from 'Smoke & Mirrors' the 7th book and it also gives us a peak at the changes that will be happening to Destructive Delta as a team and on an individual level.

While I liked this and it was nice to get a bit more info to complete the events from 'Smoke & Mirrors' I was a little disappointed at the brevity of the story and it just didn't seem to have the edginess that I've come to expect from this series.

However, I'm still looking forward to seeing what happens next. One of the things that I've really love about this series is that while each story may focus on one couple...Dex & Sloane, Ash & Cael, Calvin & Hobbs...we also get to see what's happening with the rest of the group as well. I love those little glimpses of the individual members and of their interactions with members of the team other than their partner and I have to admit I'm really, really hoping that with this new change we don't lose that. I love Dex & Sloane but I still want to see Dex & Ash tormenting each other, Dex protecting his little brother, Cael or Sloane & Ash having a beer as Ash complains about Dex or to loose the presence of Letty and Rosa the only consistent strong females in the series or the glimpses of this group as they relax on their downtime and party hard at Bar Dekatria.

'Thick & Thin' for me was a story that served as more of a bridge from what was to what will be...whether it's over troubled waters or not remains to be seen and for now I'm willing to make of show of faith and see what Ms. Cochet has in store for us on the other side of the bridge.

Sloane and Dex accept their placesas TIN operatives. Dex with his own agenda. The pair wanting to ensure no other family goes through what the did. Destructive Delta takes on a new role as well. Backup for Sloane and Dex as well as becoming a training team.

Dex is undergoing changes, wondering what will happen to him. A wedding to plan. Possible donut cake in the future. The team moving on.

Ash continues to surprise. He shows the most growth to me. Accepting his ability to love and care for another.

Too short though. Want to see all that Dex and the team are capable of.

Review originally posted at Sinfully.

What can I say? THIRDS fans, especially those left needing more after the last book, are going to want to grab this and read it right away. It gives you that little bit more that was left out at the end of Smoke & Mirrors, filling in just what I wanted to know and to see.

It may be a novella, but it’s not just filler. It picks up right where we left off and the focus is Dex and Sloane, but the whole team is involved as they find out just how much has changed and how all of them are going to be affected by it going forward. There is a lot to process and some big decisions to be made. It’s also a bridge to the next book, Darkest Hour Before Dawn, dropping hints at what is in store for Seb and Hudson.

The writing and storyline is on par to what I have come to expect from this series and its characters. Some of the teammates have a more difficult time accepting what the future holds for Dex and Sloane and Destructive Delta, and act out accordingly, but when it comes down to it all, they are as much family as they are a team and family sticks together (even though punches may be thrown).

I loved getting a taste of what Dex’s capabilities are now. Not only does it bring a whole new level to his ability to do his job, but it brings a whole new dynamic to his and Sloane’s sex life and let me tell you it is HOT. I’m also glad to have gotten some more and much needed insight into Dex’s decision with regard to TIN and Sparks (who I still want to see throat punched) and am hoping that we will be seeing some major bad-assery on his part in the future. As much as I love all the loving in the series, I also am here for the action and the new twists in the story are making me a promise I hope Charlie Cochet will deliver on.

This was a nice little tidbit to hold me over until the next book and I am dying for Seb and Hudson’s story to finally play out. If you’ve been reading the THIRDS books up until now, I don’t need to convince you that this one is worth your while, but if you haven’t started yet I highly recommend you do.

Thick & Thin is the eighth book in the THIRDS series by Charlie Cochet and this is a series which must be read in order. While Thick & Thin is a bit short for us die hard fans, it does explain a few things after the events of Smoke & Mirrors and sets the stage for the direction Cochet plans to send the boys.

As much as I loved physically reading this book when it came out, THIRDS is best experienced through the voice of Mark Westfield. He just makes these guys come to life!

Nobody can do these guys like Mark Westfield. The variety of the voices he uses to make each character unique is amazing. The relationships between the members of the THIRDS are complex and Westfield is able to express the love, support, rivalry, attraction, and the humor… just the unique friendships they have built over the years. So many layers and Westfield portrays them perfectly!

We’ve watched these guys grow as a family since Dex joined Destructive Delta and they’ve made it through some incredible trials. Between the strange things happening to Dex after Sloane ‘marks’ him, and their decision to join TIN, some explanations are necessary and Cochet takes this opportunity to do so. The team needs to come to grips with all the changes and frankly it was satisfying as a fan to get everything organized for the future of this series.

As with all the books in this series, there is a wonderful level of humor and good natured fun. These guys don’t take themselves too seriously and Cochet has the best time with that. I’m looking forward to seeing how the series is going to change with Dex and Sloane getting their own story with TIN, not to mention finding out what the heck is up with Tony and Sparks!

This is a super addictive series and one of my all time favorites.

Thick & Thin is a fun read, and an even better audiobook.

I'm always left wanting more from these books. I don't mean that I'm left unsatisfied in any way, far from it, I simply love this series so much that I hate to be left with no new stories to read featuring these fabulous THIRDS characters.

This 8th instalment picks up immediately where Smoke & Mirrors left off. It was action packed and heart-felt, leaving me emotionally spent after a short 95 pages.

This offering was just the taste I needed to keep my THIRDS cravings sated. As always, I'm seriously gaga over these characters that never cease to make me laugh and cry in abundance.

This series feels like it's building to something truly epic and what comes next is anyone's guess - but man I'm excited to find out!

While I knew the storyline was going in this direction, I still didn’t like it. I wasn’t expecting everything to change so much. I don’t do change well, and I never like it when an author decides to ‘break up’ a team and for them to all have new roles.

And that’s what happened here. I’m now kind of scared to read the rest of the books. I just want them all to be together, and happy. Now I feel like Sloane and Dex are going off on their own, and the rest of the team is no longer a real team, but some other team’s backup team.

I don’t like these changes.

3.5 stars. While it was nice to see all my THIRDS babies, this was just a little short bit to set up the new direction the series is clearly going in. I'm very interested, however, to see more of Dex's new abilities and insanely excited to get Seb and Hudson's book next!

Oh, Dex & Sloane, how i love you two! This was a great, short little novella before we get Seb and Hudson's book (finally they will be put out of their misery). The interactions between Dex and Ash continue to be some of my favorite scenes. Also I absolutely cannot stand Sparks!

This was a fun, quick story that kind of feels like it should have been a 7.5 novel instead of #8 in the series, because it was mostly an extra 100 pages of wrap up from everything that happened at the end of the seventh. Still necessary in setting up what is happening in Dex and Sloane's lives and the Destructive Delta family, but still might have been able to have been fit into the 7th book. Would have been a little long, but still. This one picks up basically right after the end of the 7th, so it could have been added instead of made into a whole new book, imo.

There's quick case that is connected to the overarching plot of the novels, and is basically wrapping up issues that needed to addressed after the 7th but also setting up further plot for later books.

This wasn't focused a crazy amount on Dex and Sloane, even though its a book for them, because it was focused so heavily on them telling the team everything from the end of book 7 they still hadn't told them, that they're getting married and joining TIN and that Dex is half therian, but there was still a super hot sex scene between them that had me fanning myself...DAMN ;) And can I just say, I am a real fan of switching several times during one sex session *wink wink* it was super hot, is all I'm saying.

Enjoyed this quick transition into the next - and finally, we get to Seb and Hudson. Bring it! :D

My exasperated face.

I don't know when I started thinking of this series as a job. Its been a lot of information thrown at us, and sometimes so hard to remember everything. I think we are heading to the end of the series, because the direction is going somewhere new. I honestly hope it does, as much as I love Sloane I'm kinda tired of him and Dex being the focal point of the stories. I get it they are team lead, and them being together works for the series. But it's convoluted now, and it stopped being about the pnr aspect of it and it's to damn sweet now. I like the relationships and everyone partnering up, but out of the 8 books 2 of them wasn't Dex & Sloane.

This book had little tidbits going for the next story, and where the road was going to go. Do I think it was needed? No, it could have been a prologue for the next story. I'm at a crossroads on if I want to continue it because its gotten out of hand with the antics. I miss the first half of the series. It's common because I just had this problem with another series. I am looking forward to Hud & Seb's book. I hope they get to spend majority of their time in the book being the focus. I swear if it's Dex & his antics like it was in the other books then I'm done. I hate to say it, but I just can't deal with it anymore.

Reread/Relisten: December 2024

Short and fast but still like to be with these cast of characters. I think that being able to now skip the books i don't like in this series helps me enjoy it more. I do know that i will be missing some information from the books i am skipping, but that is what i am willing to sacrifice to keep my reading streak going haha.

I just realized I have read 8 books in 3 days….. sooo I am flying through these, yes they are starting to blend together, but they are addictive so I am not complaining.

Dex and Sloane are a great couple I know I will definitely come back to them in the future. I think this book should have been 7.5 not 8, this was more novella length rather than full novel… but now it’s on to Hudson and Seb I hope they have a better book than the other two side couples…

Also I swear I hope Hudson’s accent doesn’t suck because Mark Westfields accent for him kinda sucks… I mean he isn’t the best narrator I have ever listened to.. Greg Boudreaux would have been a better pick but I am becoming used to his voice. He does make some of the characters sound childish rather than intimidating THIRDS agents…

This was a nice novella following the events that happened in Smoke & Mirrors. Sloane and Dex take care of their team and family. There are some heartfelt moments as well as Dex being his hilarious self. Enjoyable!
