As they strive to become Masters within the Ministry, Brock and his friends resume their training at the Academy, an institution founded on magic, science, knowledge, law, and combat. They soon discover an expansive web of conspiracies and deceit within the Ministry, hidden behind a veil of benevolence and piety. The exposure of one of those secrets forces Brock and his friends to flee the institution with their lives in the balance.
Joined by a fierce Tantarri warrior, the group embarks on a quest to locate a mysterious throne that has been lost for centuries. Guided by the cryptic words of an ancient prophecy, and backed by a forbidden magic that they are still learning to wield, they journey across the continent to save humanity from extinction.
I love fantasy, adventure, and magic. More than that, I adore my readers.
My books are written to entertain -- fantasy adventures filled with compelling characters, spectacular magic, thrilling action, constant intrigue, and a sense of discovery. I equate them to the "Marvel Movie" version of fiction, intended to be a fun escape.
I would love to have you join me and my quirky characters for one outrageous adventure after another. With over a million published words, my author journey has just begun.
Best wishes, Jeff

The world is on the verge of extinction and the knowledge to defeat evil hides within the cryptic words of an ancient prophecy and the discovery of a throne long hidden from human eyes. Brock has returned to the Academy in order to earn the right to be called a Master within the Ministry. When the very Ministry they strive to emulate is vile and corrupt and Brock’s secret is uncovered, the group must run for their very lives as the clock ticks down on world destruction and domination by powers of a monstrous darkness.
THE EMBLEM THRONE must be found, its powers uncovered and a secret group must be stopped. The quest will be difficult, bloody and the cost of honor will be high, but through it all Brock will stand strong for his friends and allies, in spite of the guilt he carries when friends are asked to make the ultimate sacrifice. Heroes will fall, betrayal will come from ones that should be protectors and the group’s untamed powers will threaten to explode as new allies join forces to staunch the evil hordes that raise their murderous numbers in a blood bath of terror and fear. The journey will be long, the path fraught with danger and there will be times when our heroes question themselves, while never doubting the righteousness of their quest, as once again, Brock is asked to assume the mantel of leader and carry the weight of survival on his young shoulders.
Jeffrey L. Kohanek’s second book in The Runes of Issalia saga has ramped up the action, the doubts and fears and raises one young man to heights of greatness and daring he never asked for. All Brock ever wanted was to reach his potential in life, to be free and equal to others and now he is mastering the art of the rune magic and unleashing the power of good, balancing chaos and order for the good of his world…has he gotten his wish or far more than he bargained for?
Mr. Kohanek has built a world of make believe that becomes completely believable and alive for me as I felt my heart break, race and thrill within the kaleidoscope of each tension-filled scene. Heroes are not born, they are made from circumstance and the true ones rise to the occasion regardless of the obstacles and unknown darkness placed in their path. They share in the unasked for glory and Jeffrey L. Kohanek imbued his characters with the grace of true heroes. Pick up this series, for you or a young adult, you’ll thank Mr. Kohanek for writing this amazing fantasy.

Series: The Runes of Issalia - Book 2 Publisher: Black Rose Writing; 1 edition (October 12, 2016) Publication Date: October 12, 2016 Genre: YA Fantasy Print Length: 298 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble For Reviews & More: http://tometender.blogspot.com
The Emblem Throne picks up where the Buried Symbol left off. As Brock and his friends return to the Academy, he is quickly exposed as an Unchosen and imprisoned, to be shipped off to work in a mine. But Brock's friends break him out and they escape the academy. On the run and hunted as outlaws, and one step ahead of invading hordes of nightmarish monsters bent on humanity's extinction, Brock and his friends race against time to find the Emblem Throne and uncover the means to deliver mankind from its greatest threat.
Content: Drug Content: PG - There is a minor amount of drinking in this book, and a few heavily inebriated minor characters.
Violence: R - The invading hordes are merciless in their horrific violence, though the graphic nature of the battles are not gratuitous. Swordfighting and magical attacks abound, and there are quite a few decapitations. The violence is a bit less graphic than in the first book.
Language: PG - there is not any cussing that I recall in the book.
Adult Content: PG. The main character has a steady girlfriend, and they have a physical relationship, but the story doesn't pursue anyone into the bedroom. Other characters also find partners in the story. There is some discussion that the Unchosen are forbidden from marrying officially, but they do often publicly declare their vows, even if the State doesn't recognize their unions.
Christian content: None at all. The main god in this book is Issal, the god of Order, and Order and Chaos are set against each other in the book, somewhat like Yin and Yang. Order is described as the life force in all living things, similar to the Jedi religion of Star Wars fame. Chaos, the hidden symbol and power from the first book, is more power and death, and is pitted as the thing that will save humanity. There are moments when characters mention praying to Issal to save them. Or to receive fallen comrades.
Final analysis: The Emblem Throne is, if anything, a more riveting read than the first one. It is well-written, immersive, and a page-turner. As in most middle books in a series, the story line resolves some things, leaving the plot at a stopping point but with the major conflicts unresolved. I'm already looking forward to the next book, really enjoying this fantasy series. From a Christian perspective I would only give a caveat that this book would be appropriate for older teens grounded in their faith. Five Stars! *I received an electronic copy for an honest review.
Thank you to the publisher for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, In no way does this influence my opinion on the book.
I enjoyed The Buried symbol a lot and I was excited to get into The Emblem Throne. The adventures of Brock and his friends is one that never ceases to be fascinating. I was curious about the direction this book will take after the ending of the previous one and I got a lot more than I expected. I had high expectations for this sequel and it surpassed every one of them. The series just keeps getting better and better, the ingenuity of Jeffrey L. Kohanek keeps showing. The Emblem Throne began with the POV of Ashland and progressed to that of other characters, it was incredibly nice to see the world from the mind of the others in the group. Filled with nonstop heart pounding action, great feats of magic, adorable romance, exhilarating adventures, The Emblem Throne made itself one of my favorite books of the year. It is incredibly well written, each scenario paints a clear image in my mind. Learning more about Chaos, The Unchosen and The Banished Horde is another aspect of this book I enjoyed, I love the way the author portrayed every detail. The whole worldbuilding is very entrancing and I really enjoyed reading about it. My favorite quote from the book is: “Shipwrecked and lost in a foreign land, yet Ashland still appreciated the beauty surrounding them. How could he not love this girl?.” That just gives me feels. The ending of this book is well crafted in a way that leaves me anxious for the next installment in this series, The impending battle is one thing I can't wait for. The Emblem Throne has it all monsters, friendship, love, humor, magic, Apocalypse, betrayal and it is one book I can recommend to all Fantasy lovers out there.
When it comes to second books in a series, I am always wary whether they are going to live up to the first book. I am glad to say that The Emblem Throne very much lives up the expectations set out by The Buried Symbol.
The Emblem Throne picks up shortly after the end of The Buried Symbol, and we are quickly drawn back into the story as the characters discuss and think on what happened at the end of The Buried Symbol. I found this extremely useful because there have been many times when I have read a previous book in a series months before reading the current one, and I find it hard to remember certain elements and consequences. This method not only shows us the characters processing what happened, but is also used as a way of helping the reader remember what occurred.
One aspect of the book I thoroughly enjoyed was being able to delve deeper into each characters’ background. I don’t want to discuss this too much as I think these scenes were a joy to read, and I don’t want to give out spoilers. What I will say though is that the interactions that occur not only help you discover why a certain character acts the way they do, but ait lso helps you understand their reasons for wanting to join the academy.
The aspect that intrigued me the most is that we learn more about a particular rune, its source and what its capable of. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about it because this was one aspect I wanted to see more of in “The Buried Symbol”. The characters wanting to learn more about it also naturally helps progress the story and the characters themselves because we see the lengths the are willing to go to find more information.
The only slight issue I had with the book was that there were certain scenes I felt were rushed, and, due to this, I had one or two occasions where I felt that maybe I had missed some information or a particular scene due to something occurring so quickly. I think if these scenes were drawn out a bit more or more information was given, then it would go towards strengthening an already great book. Thankfully though this only happened once or twice, and I don’t think it derailed the general flow of the book.
All said and done, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and was really excited to get back into its world. I think the book flows very well. If you enjoyed the first book then I would highly recommend you pick up this one as well, as it gives you a lot more information on certain elements from the first book and improves on them. If you haven’t yet read The Buried Symbol, then I would highly recommend you do so.
It's an excellent book. I like how everything is paced in this book. Relationships are made and broken. Everyone must find their own path, and all the characters are given a chance yo develop and face their parts and decide their futures.
Brock has discovered dome of the Ministry's secrets. However, it was always a only a matter of time before he himself was discovered. Who will stand with him? Brock must face his destiny, but is it too much even for him.
Many secrets are exposed. Sides are chosen. Evil returns, and heroes will rise. This series just gets better and better.
4.5 stars: (review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)
Many characters we met in book one, The Buried Symbol, are back and ready to assist Brock in his mission to save the world. Along the way, we meet several of their family members and begin to understand why they joined the Ministry. Cameron has two jealous older brothers. Ashland has an evil uncle but the sweetest and most loving parents. Benny, his father is a sweetheart and now sporting a wheelchair thanks to Benny's ingenuity. As for Parker, his father made the biggest impression of all but I won't disclose more. (No spoilers)
Along with meeting the kinfolk, the group encounters mystical beings. Wraith: A bacabra, big dog but 3-4 times larger than your normal thought of canine, whom became a great ally. Also, they battled a horde of banshees.
Ten feet tall, red eyes, and sharp talons -- These creatures are the things of nightmares. And unfortunately, the battle with them brought upon more than one death. However, not everything was a loss. Love did bloom despite the bleak future ahead. And with the end of the book came...... a promising start to book three, An Empire in Runes: releasing in Spring of 2017. I'll be on the look-out for it and I'm sure you'll be too.

Guided by the cryptic words of an ancient prophecy, and backed by a forbidden magic that they are still learning to wield, they journey across the continent to save humanity from extinction. The characters are so strong and you will root for them, you feel the lose of characters when they die. The story line is different but engaging, it will keep you glued to the book. This second book of the series is as good as if not better than the first. I can not wait for the next on in the series to come out. Great Reading Everyone!!!!!!!!!
Brock, who is destined to be a Master of Order is dismissed from the Academy and imprisoned when it is discovered the he has the rune of Chaos on his forehead, the antithesis of the rune of Order. His campions free him and they escape, encountering horrible creatures along the way who intended to ravage the population. They master some of their magical powers and prepare for a great battle. Great fantasy and I was disappointed to have to wait for the sequel to find out the outcome. The story may be for the young adult reader but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
I was given an electronic copy in return for an honest review.
Worthy of your time and money. I rarely spend to obtain good reading material with all of the free books available. However when exceptional works pop up I have to splurge and feed the book demon within and fill it's belly (and my desire for great reading) with another diamond in the making. I highly recommend this marvelous series.
See above. I just got started and kept on going. Sorry. Oh cuddle sticks...the review grinch is demanding 20 words of intense thought provoking analysis. Ok. Good bye
Lots of magic, lots of death, inc some main characters.
Interesting to see the characters develop into leaders, followers and their different roles, a good way of showing that everyone has an important part to play in the adventure even if not physically strong or adept.
Once again, the author outdid himself! This book is even better than the first, which I thought wasn't even possible! Once again we enter the epic adventure to travel with Brock and his friends. After unsavory circumstanced force the group to flee the Academy, they embark on an exciting adventure into unknown lands wrought with mystery, intrigue and adventure that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat! Experimenting with Chaos along their journey, they discover new talents and encounter centuries old prophecies that foretold of their coming. Loaded with adventure, this fast paced adventure had me eagerly devouring the book as fast as I could as more and more secrets were unveiled. All unanswered questions from book 1 were answered along with many more that popped up along the way and I can't tell you how many "ah-hah" moments I had that pleased me to no end! I absolutely completely enjoyed this book and feel like I actually lived through the book with Brock and his friends! This series is an absolute must read for any fantasy or adventure lover of any age!!
There are some new and interesting characters in this second book of the series. More Chaos powers are discovered. The author proves that he's willing to kill off some of the main characters.
The attainment of the goal, finding the throne, turns out to be anticlimactic. I would have preferred a more logical progression toward the goal.
I liked it enough to read the next book when it comes out.
I am looking forward to the next installment of this series. This pure fantasy with well defined heroes and villains and really scary monsters thrown in .
Brock and his friends return to the academy to start their second year of study. Brock and his girlfriend Ashland had both been unchosen and were risking their very lives to be at the academy where if they were found out to have falsified their rune marking they could be killed outright by the ministry. They also found out that they both could harness the rune of chaos which the ministry declared evil but they both knew they were far from evil, so why the secrecy, what was the ministry afraid of? One fine day the day they had both been dreading happened and Brock was caught out and he had to flee for his life. His friends decided to leave with him because they too realised things were not what they seemed at face value within the empire and that the ministry was hiding something. They fled, picked up Tipper and his girlfriend Libby from Fallbrandt and together with Benny, Lars, Cam and Packer they fled as far away as possible as they were being hunted down. They crossed into Tantarri lands and as these were at war with the Empire, they got caught by Tantarri warriors and taken captive until it turned out that there was a prophecy which the Tantarri believed referred to Brock. He was to be the saviour of humanity and first off he was sent on a quest to find the rune throne better known as the emblem throne. Wow this book is even better than the first book, it is full of heart stopping adventures from start to finish, battle scenes are awesome and our young group of friends get to battle creatures like banshees, bacabra and other monsters who were coming out of a wound in the earth itself. Brock was the Reditus and he was to return the lost magic, that of chaos. In fact his forehead was now marked with this very dangerous rune and he and his friends were risking their lives as they tried their best to solve the quest set for them. It seems that the unchosen were left unmarked because they could all wield the rune of chaos and they were to become the saviours of mankind! They would have to fight members of the Hand but Brock was now the fist of chaos and all out to crush the Hand and their evil machinations. I really enjoyed reading about the emblem throne and seeing things unfold the way they did in this story taking us back to things which had happened in the prequel Rogue Legacy, everything is making sense now and I cannot wait to read the 3rd book in this epic series which is so gripping from start to finish!
This is a solid fantasy book. I read it before reading the first book, but had no trouble following any of the action or knowing who any of the characters were. I really enjoyed the characters, Brock and Ashland, and the rest, and their quest to uncover the truth about Chaos, a different type of magic, than what the Ministry teaches. Armed with an ancient book, they flee only to find themselves in the center of a prophecy, and a fight for the future of the world. They are complex and well written characters and they have a great dynamic. The story flows very well and there is a great balance of action and narration.
I am never disappointed reading books by Jeffrey L. Kohanek, he consistently write stories that enthral, inspire and transport you to another world and time. This is the second book in the Runes of Issalia, its as exciting as the first. The main characters are still here with the exception of a few who were lost on the way. The story is quickly heading towards its conclusion. I for one can’t wait. Grab your coffee, or tea, or wine, curl up in your favourite reading place and lose yourself in the world of Issalia. Highly recommend.
This one felt similar to the first. Stuff just happens, everything is predictable and nothing feels like it stands out. Still it's an easy read that I didn't hate my time going through. I'll probably finish the series but it's hard to recommend unless your TBR list is small. It's definitely not bad but it never becomes good either.
I have been intrigued by the story and the world building, however this book does need a new pair of eyes in terms of editing. There are a couple of spots where words are missing or the wrong spelling of a word jarred me out of the story.
Book 2 of the Runes of Issalia series continues on from book 1, following Brock Talenz and his friends at the Academy, although each of them has now completed their first year, and has now been chosen for a specialty to continue on with, Brock no surprise with Ecclesiastics, along with Ashland, Benny of course is Engineering and Cam and Lars are to be Paladins (again, no surprise there given how good they are). Book 1 was broken into multiple parts, the introduction of Brock and Tip, their journey to the Academy, and the Brocks eventual first year at the Academy. Book 2 has a similar format, only with a much different storyline. Book 2 is slightly different also, in that the story is not told entirely from Brock’s perspective, but we get to learn more about each of our main characters, Benny, Ashland, Cam and Lars. At the start of the book, this is told through the group being on a holiday, and each of them going back to their family homes, so we get to meet the parents, but see a good bit of background character growth for every character. It was fascinating getting to see where all of the group came from, but we also got to learn various things that had been hinted at in book 1. In this second book Parker has joined the group as well, now that he doesn’t have to suck up to Corbin due to family ties, he makes good friends with Brock who he always liked, as well as Benny, his roommate, and the others. The story returns to the Academy for a while, where the group continues to learn their new second year skills. As year 2 starts, Brock and the gang continue to research Chaos and the history of the Banished Horde, both of which have been removed from nearly all knowledge places, and it has been only through some careful snooping and luck that they have found some old texts on either subject. As the story unfolds (and I don’t want to give too much away), the Scooby Gang uncover all sorts of interesting information about the power of Chaos, and how to use the runes. However, due to various events (that I won’t spoil), the group make a sudden departure from the Academy. This is where the story moves to the third part of this book (the first having been the holiday, and the second returning to school), as the group Brock, Ashland, Benny, Lars, Cam, and Parker all head off on a journey to find The Emblem Throne (I’m hoping that wasn’t a spoiler for anyone given the title). I am not going to go into too much from here, as I don’t want to give away spoilers, but the book moves away from the Academy life, and into a far more adventure style story, in which the training that they have received in the first year (the healing, Paladin training, even the Hierarchal training for diplomacy and understanding of various laws etc), are all put to the test. This is a really fascinating and in-depth story, as it is not just about good and evil, there are some complex moral questions that have far-reaching social outcomes. The caste structure of society that has been set up and the ramifications this has for those without a ‘Rune’, both social and moral is intriguing. But more than that, we now get to see another interesting moral dilemma with the discovery of Chaos and the potential power it holds. Kohanek has weaved this intricate tale with multiple layers and sub-stories, whilst the main story follows Brock, each of the major characters also has their own significant storyline as well, Ashland, Cam, Benny, Parker, Tip and Libby, as well as several new characters I won’t give away spoilers for. As with the first book, the character work is just exceptional, such in-depth characters that come to life on every page, and you find yourself lost in their stories from the first page. Each and every character is such an amazing person, from the Heroic Brock, to the Legendary Cam, and the Compassionate Ashland. Even those that work for the corrupt side (no spoilers) are wonderfully well done. Along with the great character work, the world-building is outstanding, with beautifully crafted cities and places they visit, to the truly terrifying creatures that they face, straight from nightmares, every aspect of this story is intricately detailed to make this story extraordinary. Book 2 is the bridge between the Academy, and events that are going to unfold in book 3 that are Epic. This is a brilliant sequel, and not to be missed, it is one of those rare books that the sequel was as good if not better than the original!!
This is one series I would love to follow. The first part titled The Buried Symbol was an unputdownable read. I picked this book to continue from where I had left in part one. And I was in for a pleasant surprise.
The plot took off from the cliffhanger in the earlier volume. There is a sudden twist that gets introduced and that changes the entire perspective of the reader. To describe what it is would entail spoiler alerts. Hence, do read this book to know more about the story.
The narration took me by surprise. I was expecting a similar flow like the earlier work. However, this one was different. The pace set and the tempo followed in the narration was very different. And that is the USP of this book. The writing is engrossing like book 1 but yes, with a different twist and treatment. In this continuation, the storyline narration does have the power to evoke wonderful imageries. Hence, it is a delight for the reader.
The main characters are the same. However, they do evolve as situations change. New characters are introduced. In totality, every character was important for the story.
To sum, the second book in the series is a must read too. It has an amazing narrative and an excellent storyline. This series is now one of my favourites. This story talks of making choices and taking decisions that can change the course of life. I read it in one sitting straight.
P.S - Thank you Jeffrey for an amazing story. This review is my honest opinion after reading the story.
The Emblem Throne is the second book of the Runes of Issalia trilogy, and here we are introduced to a few new characters. The plot thickens regarding old wars, creatures of nightmare, and why people really are "unchosen." And as much as the intrigue develops, so too does the scope widen. Not only is Brock's life at stake, or his lover's, or his friends', but all of Issalia is threatened by an ancient evil.
But to save the world, Brock and his ragtag team must dare the dangers and perilous path, and seek out the Emblem Throne. And boy, do they run into trouble while doing so! In The Emblem Throne, the action is fast-paced, the stakes are high, and the battle scenes are glorious!
The continued world-building is fantastic, and I am wholly invested in these characters. So much so that certain twists and downfalls had me holding my breath and grieving with my newfound fictional friends. Runes of Issalia, as a whole, is truly a story of friendship and how people from all places of society can band together and work towards a joint goal. The characters are all fabulously written and continue to complement each other beautifully.
I genuinely really enjoy the story, sort of reminds me of the wheel of time. I just can't get over the simple characters though! The "he's got you there Cam" thing makes no sense. If you're a teenager who got caught by your friends being all mushy you don't then go on am empassioned speech about how wonderful love is. Every one of the characters seems to fall in love after one kiss. There's basically no complexity to any of the character interactions, if I was there I'd be worried I was in an invasion of the body snatchers remake only with less believable replacements. There was a part in chapter 49-51 I think where they were in that abandoned city where the character shifts and random flashback made me honestly think I'd dozed through a couple of chapters and go back and check. Such a shame because it ruins the story and magic system that I was really enjoying. Think I'll give the third a miss, only read the second hoping the author would grow into it.
A great follow up to the first book The Buried Symbol, in the this book we find out about some of the characters backgrounds were loyalties and friendships are tested. We are introduced to a hoard of Banshees bent on the destruction of the Empire. When Brock and his friends return to the academy after their summer break, Brocks lies of his past has caught up with him, he is confronted by a teacher for his treachery and blagging his way into the academy. Now after being exposed his must make a run for it again before he is sent to the mines for being an unchosen. His friends decide to go with him, taking them on dangerous adventures and a task of finding the legendary Emblem Throne for a relic that will save humanity from blood thirsty monsters. With their new magical abilities will they overcome the trials they face, read it to find out. Fantastic worldbuilding, plot and setting, a great read for all fantasy fans, the narration by Tim Cambell is excellent, highly recommend...😁💥🔥
The book completely went to the gutters about 1/3 of the way through. It's clear the author has a plan with the book, but the execution is severely lacking. The characters motivation are unclear. The plot moves from A to B unnaturally, forced by the author needing to further the preplanned plot. This is done by the characters making illogical choices and acting like idiots. It just doesn't make any sense.
There were weak parts of the first book that I forgave and was able to overlook due its fun nature. However, with the plot in the second installment completely collapsing, the weak characters and prose stood out even more. After a promising start, the events at the 1/3 mark of the book caused me not to care about anything that was going on. After giving it plenty of time to hook me back in, I decided to drop this book about halfway through.
Each one gets better and better. I love this series as much as wizardoms. Such great characters and a fabulous plot. In this one Brocks secret of being unchosen has been discovered by the academy. They also threatened to test the rest of Brocks friends for more imposters. Since Ashlind is unchosen as well, Brock can't let that happen so Brock, Ashlind & more of their friends decide to leave to avoid death. As they continue on their journey they will face many enemies and even gain some new friends. But they will also have to face The Horde, an evil group of Banshess out to end mankind. My favorite part is the new pet that Brock acquires, it's hilarious. Now on to book 3.
I rather enjoyed the first book. It wasn't deep but it had the bones to make something of it. The academy and the magical science was all intriguing. The planet coming in was a interesting touch.
But then we have monsters and a prophecy, and a chosen one trope that was really just dumped in our lap. It was a rough go. So overplayed. I actually hit that point with the plains people and stopped reading for a week, I was so disappointed. It got a little better after. But it was just bad.
The story is ok, I’m irritated by....continuity I guess. These are supposedly intelligent people yet they walk into the place they are/will be most at risk without consideration or planning, they have at hand a powerful toll that requires some preparation yet fail to prepare themselves when they opportunity in some cases and plan in detail at others - irritating but, quite an interesting idea and tale.
Brock's life before the Academy was not always honest, and he uses those skills to steal books that have been hidden and buried for hundreds of years as he and his friend try to find the truth of their history. One of the things I absolutely love about this series is how the characters grow and the story unfolds as they progress, through their own actions and insights. A great series and an absolute MUST READ!
