Gilad has finally fixed a side of his existence that was always beyond his ability with an axe. His love of family and his determination to protect it are what make him stronger than any otherworldy foe.

Gilad returns to the land beyond with Aric's help. He finds that his firstborn, Kalam, has followed in his footsteps through the woods that surround their house. Gilad embarks on the long and bloody adventure to save his son's soul, a trip that has him side with an ancient enemy and puts him in front of a new enemy that is a threat to the whole hellscape.

The Eternal Warrior needs to die, just one last time. With the secret of the Dying One and his Labyrinth solved, Gilad can now reconcile with his firstborn son Kalam and all will be right with the world. At least until Gilad returns to the Hellscape to find that Kalam has already left the safety of the grove, only to be captured by the demons that lie beyond it. But Gilad will not be denied, and he will slaughter every demon in the underworld between him and Kalam if he has to – and he has all the time in the world.

The first two issues here are mostly set-up stuff, as the Eternal Warrior makes his way back to the Hellscape and then out into the demonic hordes. The first issue is especially poignant, as Gilad tries to convince Aric to kill him one last time. Aric is sceptical, of course, and it’s the strength of the relationship between the two characters that shines through in this issue. Speaking of character relationships, Gilad and his wife finally have it out, and she calls him out on all of his bullshit from the past...millennia...which was a long time coming. This is almost as entertaining as seeing Gilad beat up demons, because he’s nowhere near as good at verbal sparring as he is the physical kind.

The second two issues are more all out brawl, as Gilad literally goes to Hell and back to save his firstborn son. There’s a reason this series is called Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior, and it’s definitely on full display here. But there’s also a lot of heart, especially in the final issue, which shows how much Gilad has grown over the past few issues, and how he can have a newfound appreciation for those around him, even when he’s destined to outlive everyone in the human world.

It’s a shame that we lose Raul Allen as the artist for this book, because his colours and panel arrangements have really set the tone of the series across the last 10 issues. Instead we get Robert Gill, who is one of Valiant’s rising stars after having headlined Book Of Death and with a run on X-O Manowar under his belt. His art is dependable and well-formed, and he grapples with the battles against outlandish demonic characters just as easily as the emotional beats in the quieter scenes between Gilad and his family and friends.

Gilad’s ongoing series never seem to last that long. I feel like he’s the Wolverine of Valiant – great as a team player, but not so successful as a solo artist. That said, his second ongoing series has been a vast improvement over the first, and expands on the mythos surrounding him in new and interesting ways that distance him from his brothers and team members allow him to become a character in his own right. You really learn to feel for him and his situation in these fourteen issues, and I really hope he gets to step into the spotlight again soon.

Gilad returns to his sanctuary (what you might call private slice of Heaven) only to find his first-born, Kalam, missing.

After finding out that Kalam followed him to purgatory and never came back Gilad decides to save his child. But malevolent forces in purgatory will decide to use Gilad's combat prowess for their own goals.

Interesting story of one's redemption and finding the inner peace after years and years of relentless combat and bloodshed. Gilad tries to save his son and build rapport with him (considering that Kalam does not remember him at all being abducted at the very young age) but also to find the inner peace.

Because, are we sure that Gilad's inner sanctum is not just that - inner sanctum that exists only in his mind? Not Heaven (as it is usually envisaged) where his siblings, wives and kids are walking around but simulation of sorts provided by the Earth to give Gilad some respite between his deaths?

Interesting story, recommended to all fans of fantasy and of course Eternal Warrior.

If you enjoyed the first volume of Wrath of the Eternal Warrior, Volume 1: Risen but found volume two wo be a bit of a mess, as I did, then this is a welcome return to form. It turns out that all the backstory for the villain we met in volume two really didn't matter to the overall story, you could completely skip it, and just read volumes one and three, and have the whole story.

This is another story dealing with the Eternal Warrior's relationship with his first born son, and adds in a very bare bones Heirarchy Of Hell storyline akin to Sandman/Lucifer.

I recommend it for fans of Conan fantasy comics.

Deal with a Devil (#11-14). Venditti's finale for Wrath of the Eternal Warrior deftly knots together all of his plot threads: the afterlife, the hellscape, Gilad's family, and how the Dying One has affected it. Some of this is a little obvious, as is often the case in a well-executed arc, but still it's a good ending with strong emotional resonance [4+/5].
