Short story revealing how Griffin first found Saul after moving to Widdershins.
Best if read after reading Widdershins as it contains mild spoilers.
This story was written to raise funds for Cat Care Initiative, a non-profit based in Campbellford, Ontario. They work tirelessly to find loving forever homes for deserving cats or kittens, and to spay/neuter and provide housing for feral colonies
Jordan L. Hawk is a trans author from North Carolina. Childhood tales of mountain ghosts and mysterious creatures gave him a life-long love of things that go bump in the night. When he isn’t writing, he brews his own beer and tries to keep the cats from destroying the house. His best-selling Whyborne & Griffin series (beginning with Widdershins) can be found in print, ebook, and audiobook.
An adorable short story about how Griffin adopted Saul or how Saul adopted Saul, depending on how you see it. :D Best read after the first book in the series to avoid spoilers.
This is an adorable and heartwarming short story about how Saul adopted Griffin. There is a small bit at the end set after the first book, so this should be read after Widdershins and before Home. I love these characters and I miss them so much. 😻
I’m so glad I was finally able to read this story and ughhhh it hit me so hard. Cats really can be a salvation when you feel most alone, and I love how i can see Saul gave Griffin something to live for. Wonderful short story~
Update Oct 12, 2019: This short is just so soft and sweet and I love Saul so much! I love how Griffin believes Saul rescued him rather than the other way around, and in a lot of ways I relate to that feeling. Having Bruce, my black cat, has truly made living so much better, especially on the hard days. And I love Whyborne and Griffin together so much~
Extremely cute story about a very good boy (applies to either Saul or Griffin). Might be marked as 0.5 on goodreads but definitely read it after Widdershins.
I'm glad I got notice and was able to donate for a great cause and for a super cute little story. Cats make us better people, and I'm glad Saul found Griffin.
Breve ma deliziosa shot sull'arrivo di Griffin, sui suoi pensieri e le preoccupazioni, e l'incontro con Saul che gli ha cambiato la vita. Davvero carino, un bel tassello nel quadro generale.
A story focusing on our kitty friend Saul? from Whyborne and Griffen? Sign me up! I've been trying to hunt down this story for a while because I found out about it long after the fundraiser ended, but when Laura told me that you could find it on Jordan L. Hawk's Patreon if you were at the $1 or more level (https://www.patreon.com/posts/vacatio...) I was off at the speed of light to grab it. And I was not disappointed. I absolutely adored getting to get a glimpse into Griffin's interaction with Saul and Widdershins before he met up with Whyborne, and I loved getting a peak at his early times with Whyborne. And those of us who love cats know the feeling of how very important our furry companions are to us, not just how important we are to them. I know that after I brought my rescue boy home, the vet I brought him to talked about how I was saving his life (which may be true to some degree, although he was at a no kill foster) but my cats absolutely preserve my life by being there for me no matter what.
However, let it be known for "I want to start at the beginning" readers that this is absolutely not the place that you should start in the series. That's book 1. This is bonus material for people who love the series. I get that this is 0.5 and thus you may think "Hmm, so technically it starts before 1, so maybe I should start here," but don't. Start at book 1, read book 1, then think about reading this one. Maybe even read a couple of the other books before coming back to this one. This one can be read at any point in the series but not first.
I loved this story about how Griffin meet his cat Saul. Many of the things mentioned reminded me of why I ended up getting more dogs and how they pretty much saved me.
An animal's unconditional love really can save you from loneliness and depression. And I loved this short for voicing that.
This short was to raise money for a animal charity as well which was just amazing <3 I hope Jordan does more like it. :)
Such a very, very wonderful short story. A beautiful 'tail' created to support a beautiful cause-for donation to a fundraiser for Cat Care Initiative. I'm so very delighted that this author chose this opportunity to give their fans more insight into Griffin Flaherty. My heart went out to him all the more because of this delightfully touching tale. I have to admit I cried a little while reading this. I haven't gotten far with the Whyborne & Griffin books but I'm anxious to do so, now that the writer has completed the absolute last novel of this widely successful series! This author has become my all-time favorite, supplanting an author that held that position for over twenty-five years!
This was an adorable story of how Saul came to be in Griffin's care. Sweet and short this is a fun moment in time and as I've been trying to get my hands on it for ages it was so nice to finally find it.
I just bought the box set of the first three books in the series, but Goodreads tells me that this wee short story is the prequel. It's very short, and describes how one of the main characters (so I presume, I've just read the story and haven't opened the set yet) got his cat. It's a likeable little story, but it's more of a teaser than anything. I get the impression that the series is a historical paranormal romance, but this only really fits the first descriptor for me. There's a hint of strange activity in the narrator's past, but he also refers his stay in an asylum so it could be read as insanity rather than actuality, and while the story ends with (again, who I presume to be) the two main characters together, their entire journey is skipped over. No doubt it's in the first novel proper, but this is really just about the cat being rescued and given a home.
A ginger cat, too, which is nice. They've always been my favourites.
Very nice too-short story about how Griffin found his cat, Saul.
I am not sure if this book was designed to get new readers interested in the series, but it felt like that, rather than a piece meant for those reading the series. It pretty much crammed all the information we have learned about Griffin into 5 pages. It also cheats anyone who is reading all the books in the series for the first time, out of discovering this things about the character for themselves.
I would recommend reading (at least this book) in the order it was written. Or at least read the first three or so books. Then it will be a nice companion book to the series.
4.5 stars. A sweet snippet of Griffin and Saul before the events of Widdershins. Because it's so incredibly short, I wont give full 5 stars, but it's a lovely little addition to the series.
I would not start the series with this. It can be a teaser but it's pretty spoilery. Nothing groundbreaking, but Widdershins is told by Whyborne's POV and this snippet tells many things about Griffin that are revealed much later on, and I think the mystery of Griffin is essential to the first novel. This story also reveals something of the couple's future, as the ending is set on a later time.
Short story revealing how Griffin first found Saul after moving to Widdershins. Best if read after reading Widdershins as it contains mild spoilers.
Heather's Notes This story is about how Griffin meets Saul (the cat). It gives a good look at Griffin and how it was when he first moved there. The spoilers are very mild and would probably not mess up the story for you and the spoiler is a bit obvious, but still I did read after the first book.
Not everyone loves Widdershins and Griffin sure didn't at the start. (Don't know why he wouldn't just love our little murder town.) Of course, he found Saul and they're just so freaking adorable together. (I'm just going to go over here and coo over how cute they are.)
'Saul sprang into my lap and butted his head against my chin. […] He repeated the action and I kissed him between the ears.'
Griffin's early days in Widdershins are difficult. He struggles to build his budding private detective business. One night he rescues a scraggly stray cat, names him Saul, and nurses him back to health. Turns out it's not a one-way relationship, it's a lovely symbiotic relationship.
The story is lovingly dedicated to all of Jordan L. Hawk many cats. 😽
RESCUED was a cute little short introducing Griffin's early days of moving to Widdershins and how he adopted his adorable marmalade cat, Saul. It also has a quick little moment between Griffin and Whyborne from right after the end of WIDDERSHINS so I recommend reading this after book 1 even though it's marked as a prequel.
This made me cry because I miss my own cat so much. But it was also an adorable little short story about how Griffin got Saul, and I absolutely love getting Griffin’s POV in these.
