Join A.J. and the gang from Ella Mentry School as they show young readers why they attend the weirdest—and most fun!—school around. My Weird Class Pet Mess is a Level Two I Can Read book, geared for kids who read on their own but still need a little help.
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
Neo led the way with this book, taking us into this very weird school. The class has been assigned to choose a pet for all to share. While the girls want a bunny, the more numerous boys opt for a snake. While they are grossed out, the class is also in awe when they learn that toads are the delicacy their pet likes best. An encounter with a canine leaves Bob the snake stunned, or could he be dead, as he has not eaten for days? Worry not, Mr. Cooper the teacher is there to set the record straight and find a teachable moment at the same time. Neo liked this story, though did wonder why his class was only permitted to turn caterpillars into butterflies and not have a snake.

Alexia really doesn’t want a bunny for a class pet. She convinces some of the other students to vote for a snake. The snake vote wins and Alexia is asked to feed it for the week. She feeds it one day and then forgets for the rest of the week. When the snake gets scared and plays dead, she thinks she has killed it. Little did the class know, this kind of snake has a very realistic mechanism and it’s not Alexia’s fault at all.
The main character annoyed me in this. She hates a lot of things and people and doesn’t listen to the teacher at all. Kids aren’t usually grouches who dislike everything.
Mr. Cooper's class want a class pet. After taking a vote, they get a snake. For the rest of the week, Mr. Cooper lets the kids bring in their pets. One pet pees in the room and the kids get to skip class. Then a skunk comes and sprays the school so everyone gets to skip school. Then it looks like the snake is dead but it is just playing dead because it got scared during all the commotion. I thought this was super silly and for little kids only. (Jensen age 12)
Kids not ready forte My Weird School chapter books can join the fun with the first readers. In this adventure a new class pet divides the boys against the girls and the importance of responsibility is shown.
Very cute I Can Read picture book! Perfect length for beginning readers (Reading with Help level 2), lots of sight words, easy to decode words, captivating pet theme, and science and nature integration. Readers will enjoy learning about class pets and the messes they make!
At My Weird School, getting a new class pet is going to have to be weird. Also, quite likely, the mess promised in the title is literally, really, actually going to happen.
For this Goodreader, the highlight of this Level 2 Story comes early, when children in the class speculate about what that pet is going to be. These kids may be gross, but at least they're consistent about it.
KEEP READING AND WHAT WILL YOU DISCOVER, GOODREADERS?
If the gross-and-silly sense of humor used for this popular book series... If this gross-and-silly sense of humor turns out to become kind of contagious for you... Welcome to the club. This is my second of these books, and I'm melllllting.
One could join worse clubs, surely.
FIVE STARS from a Goodreader who is acquiring this taste.
Everyone finally gets revenge on Andrea. She's so annoying. I would not want to be the teacher of this crazy class. Under no circumstances would I ever approve of a skunk for show-and-tell or as a class pet. As usual, Dan Gutman delivers a plot just short of drama and mess (4th grade style). I love it!
Mr. Cooper's class votes on a class pet, and what the chooses is a snake over a bunny. Bob is a hognose snake, and soon the hijinks begin when the class thinks that Andrea's prissy little poodle, Cupcake, made Bob have a heart attack, and Alexia thinks she killed Bob by feeding him too many toads.
The class votes on what pet to get for their class and snake wins. This is pretty funny and also gives some interesting information about hognose snakes. (Karen's review)
