Not for the faint-hearted, Lesley’s scholarship is the real deal. It’s hard to imagine anyone knowing their subject as well as he does in this volume.
If you want to know anything about the development and cultural milieu of any facet of western literature in detail, you will want to read this book!
THE classic history of Greek literature. I used this in graduate school in the 1960s, so I'm sure it's a bit outdated. But I am unaware of any better history of the topic. Very thorough. Indispensable for scholars.
One has to overlook the few astronomically sexist remarks (there are two howlers), but otherwise the style is quite readable, conversational, enjoyable, etc.
