Although I have been a published author since the mid 1980s, I have been writing women's Christian fiction almost exclusively since 1999.
There is a longer, more detailed bio on my website so there's no need for me to repeat all that here. Right now, I write for all three Love Inspired lines, Romance, Suspense and Historical. I'm delighted to have been included that broadly and besides, it keeps me so busy that I stay out of trouble. Well, mostly.
You'll find me on the LI Historical blog as well as other LI features. If I try to do much more I won't have time to write my books!
The prologue caught my attention with its intriguing premise about the hero's brother and his persecution. This initial intrigue likely set high expectations for the rest of the story.
In the first chapter, I appreciated the development of Charity, a whiny sister from the 1st book Frontier Courtship, who was now portrayed as cool, strong, brave, and capable of standing up to men. The dynamics of conversations and chemistry between the characters also were interesting and exciting.
However, as the story progressed, I felt that both the story and the characters lost their initial momentum. Specifically, the heroine's development seemed to slow down, and the action became less engaging compared to the beginning. The author revealed too many secrets and provided excessive details about the villains' plans, leaving no room for mystery or suspense. This have diminished my interest in the story.
The author's focus on the child and how the heroes cared for him also became a point of disappointment for me. I found it uncomfortable and unrealistic how the heroes became excessively fixated on a child who wasn't even their own.
While the story had potential with its richness, I felt that it became forced and unconvincing. The heroes' obsession with the child blinded them to the threats around them and made it difficult for me to connect with their reality.
The only remaining intrigue that caught my attention was the mystery surrounding This element provided some curiosity, but it wasn't enough to keep me engaged in the story.
Overall, the combination of a loss of pace, lack of mystery and suspense, focus on the child, and unconvincing story elements ultimately led me to decide not to finish the book after reading 118 pages (41%).
I thought this was a decent read. Very intense trek across the wilderness with a dangerous man chasing them. I do think it was a bit to long, but over all not a bad read.
This book is related closely to Frontier Courtship, being the heroine is the sister from the previous book. I read about half of this book but I just couldn't get into it. The writing was fine and flowed nicely, actually even better than its predecessor. I guess I just wasn't in the mood to read this at this time.
