Dashing Widows #4

Pursuing Lord Pascal

Rate this book
Golden Days…

Famous for her agricultural innovations, Amy, Lady Mowbray has never had a romantical thought in her life. Well, apart from her short-lived crush on London’s handsomest man, Lord Pascal, when she was a brainless 14-year-old. She even chose her late husband because he owned the best herd of beef cattle in England!

But fate steps in and waltzes this practical widow out of her rustic retreat into the glamour of the London season. When Pascal pursues her, all her adolescent fantasies come true. And those fantasies turn disturbingly adult when grown-up desire enters the equation. Amy plunges headlong into a reckless affair that promises pleasure beyond her wildest dreams – until she discovers that this glittering world hides damaging secrets and painful revelations set to break a country girl’s tender heart.

All that glitters…

Gervaise Dacre, Lord Pascal needs to marry money to rescue his estate, devastated after a violent storm. He’s never much liked his reputation as London’s handsomest man, but it certainly comes in handy when the time arrives to seek a rich bride. Unfortunately, the current crop of debutantes bores him silly, and he finds himself praying for a sensible woman with a generous dowry.

When he meets Dashing Widow Amy Mowbray, it seems all his prayers have been answered. But his mercenary quest becomes dangerously complicated when he finds himself in thrall to the lovely widow. Soon he’s much more interested in passion than in pounds, shillings and pence. What happens if Amy discovers the sordid truth behind his whirlwind courtship? And if she does, will she see beyond his original, selfish motives to the ardent love that lies unspoken in his sinful heart?

Your mirror doesn't always show you what people see.

I read Pursuing Lord Pascal in one day. Each instalment of this series has been something I look forward to. Anna Campbell provides us with a short, sweet and steamy historical romance that packs a punch.

We start Pursuing Lord Pascal getting to know our heroine, Amy. Living a life doing what she loves has filled a need, but it has also left her extremely lonely. Her elderly husband passed a couple of years back but Amy never moved on. When visiting with friends and family, the new Dashing Widows come together.

Amy, Sally and Amy's sister-in-law Morwenna, decide it's time to enter society again and look to having some fun. Amy sees herself as plain and boring and imagines her friends will struggle to make her look attractive. She's sure she would bore any man to tears with her talk of agricultural innovations. Imagine Amy's surprise when her first outing puts her face to face with her childhood crush and he seems very interested.

Gervaise Dacre, Lord Pascal is in need of a wife. Unfortunately, the silly twits he has met so far are leading him to despair. Then, all of a sudden, the air swirled with unmistakable magic (no, this is not a fairytale) and Pascal sees a vision walk into his life. He wants to meet her...he needs to have her. For the first time in his life, Pascal, the most beautiful man in London, is going to have to work for what he wants.

The journey for Amy and Pascal is far from smooth. There are secrets, insecurities, doubts and reservations. Will Pascal be able to convince Amy that he's more than a pretty face? Has his reputation tarnished his chances of finding a happy ever after?

The people around Amy seem to be distracted by the pretty dresses and not see her boring, country girl ways. Can Amy learn to trust the feelings developing between herself and Pascal?

Again, I find myself getting the historical romance fix I crave in a little package of goodness. I know with these short stories that I will get everything I adore about stepping back in time. I definitely want more and can't wait to see the other Dashing Widows find their own happiness.

To buy Pursuing Lord Pascal for the bargain price of $0.99 from Amazon - http://amzn.to/2enzeBh

Amy Mowbray is a 25-year old widow who's content with her country farming life than London's social scene, especially as she's a recognized expert in the field. She agrees to accompany her widowed sister-in-law, Morwenna, and best friend (also a widow) to the city for the current season to help lift Morwenna's spirits. But, it's Amy who experiences the transformation, especially when her teen crush, the suave and gorgeous Lord Gervais Pascal, makes her the focal point of his interest.

I loved this story! While Amy may have lived an unconventional life for a woman, it didn't mean she was a shrinking violet. She was witty, intelligent and went toe-to-toe with Pascal in every way. He's used to women falling at his feet, not having to work too hard at conquests. Amy's pursuit of him wasn't traditional as she turned the tables on him, requiring him to step up and work for her. I liked both of them quite a bit, especially as Pascal turned out to be a man of substance once given the chance to be himself.

I thought this series ended with the last three widows so I'm delighted that we have three more interesting women added. Amy was certainly intriguing given her vocation and sort of sad backstory and I liked that she reunited with her first, unrequited love. It was a delightful story with wonderful dialogue. Everything about it worked.

The next generation of Dashing Widows is here! One of them is the sister of Silas from The Seduction of Lord Stone, and the other two are her friends. The premise is still the same: three widowed ladies decide it's high time to re-enter society (or to force one of their best friends to come out of her seclusion and have some fun).
Amy made for a nice change in heroine: highly sensible (she actually has an honest conversation and listens to her man! No throwing things, no hissy fit, no nothing. And for someone who hates forced last-minute drama that is a breath of fresh air in this genre...), contend to spend her days running her country estate, and certainly not looking for love (she had more of a mentor relationship with her first, considerably older, husband).
Gervaise, Lord Pascal, needs money to save his estate, but the dimwitted debutantes he encounters set his teeth on edge. When, one day, he sees Amy across a crowded ballroom and he feels like the world has somehow shifted all of a sudden, he is less than amused at first. And when the dratted woman refuses to be charmed by his good looks, he suddenly realizes that this is the first time he ever had to fight for what he wants...
All in all, it's a way too short novella (the book ends at 85% of the Kindle edition), but one that I found highly enjoyable.

Another seductive addition in the Dashing Widows series.

Lord Pascal is a delightful rake. His estate is in disrepair and needs cash urgently and is looking for a wealthy wife (uh-oh). He sets his eyes on Amy, Lady Mowbray, intelligent and funny and unlike any of the witless debutantes he has met, however to win Amy’s heart he has some serious work to do.

Anna Campbell serves up an enjoyably delicious Regency romp.

Re-read update: Still enjoyed this the second time around. No change in the rating. I didn't like the beginning quite as much as it felt a little stilted this time around what with Gervaise proposing almost immediately and Amy's character being a little inconsistent, but I thought this book had a strong finish and I liked how the two characters came to understand each other and communicated well.

Original review:
This novella opens the "second round" of wicked widows with Amy (sister of Silas, the hero of the first Widows book), Sally, and Morwenna (married to Amy's brother) making up the new trio. This works as a standalone novella though there are some nice cameos if you've been reading the other installments of this series.

I really enjoyed Amy and Gervaise's romance. They were two mature adults who communicated with each other and wanted something deeper together. And refreshingly, the book blurb is exactly what the story is about...though I think the Earl of Pascal did more of the pursuing than Amy...which was fine by me!

The plot of this story is how Gervaise falls for Amy and pursues her. He has always had an easy time with women due to his physical gorgeousness, but Amy makes him work for it and he appreciates that she is a woman of substance and their relationship is deeper as a result. Of course, Gervaise does need money and Amy does find out about it, but Campbell handles it well and I liked how the two worked through it together.

Overall, this was not an original plot, but it was well done and I really enjoyed reading it. I just wish there had been a longer end. I'd have liked to see Amy tromping about with the earl on their property using her knowledge and setting things aright on the estate as a team. But oh well, that's the sign of a good story...that you want to keep hanging out with them!

This one is worth a read :)

Anna Campbell continues her delightful Dashing Widows series with three more young, widowed friends – Amy, Lady Mowbray, Sally Cowan, Countess of Norwood and Morwenna Nash – who decide they need a little adventure in their lonely lives and this is Amy’s story.

Ever since she was a girl, Amy had been interested in the scientific farming, publishing her first article on animal husbandry when she was not much more than sixteen. At the age of eighteen, her prime reason for choosing to marry her neighbour, Sir Wilfred Mowbray, forty years her senior, was the chance to be involved in his farming experiments. Although her husband’s infrequent attentions were not onerous, there was never any passion in her marriage and Amy thought of him as more of a friend and mentor than a husband. Since her husband’s death five years ago, Amy has been content to run the estate and continue writing her articles on new farming methods. She had never considered herself beautiful or been in love, but as a graceless fourteen-year-old, Amy had suffered an adolescent crush on Lord Pascal, considered the handsomest man in London.

When the story opens, Amy is in Leicestershire at the home of her brother, Silas and his wife, Caroline (The Seduction of Lord Stone), for the christening of their fourth child. It is there that a reluctant Amy, her sister-in-law, Morwenna, and Morwenna’s friend, Sally, decide to follow in the footsteps of the original Dashing Widows and head off to London.

“Then I hereby declare the return of the Dashing Widows. Watch out, London. We’re on our way.”

While attending a ball one evening, Amy finds herself face to face with none other than the man of her adolescent fantasies, Lord Pascal. When he shows a definite interest in her, Amy, aware of his reputation, is distrustful and wants to get to know him first before making any rash decisions and therefore insists that he courts her.

A storm has left Gervaise’s estate in ruins and he needs cash urgently for repairs. Hence, he is in London to find a wealthy wife. At a ball one evening, he despairs of ever finding an alternative to the pretty, empty headed heiresses he is forced to dance with; that is until he spots a certain lady across the ballroom.

How could he concentrate on half-baked girls when that luscious banquet of a woman wandered into sight?

He discovers the beguiling lady is widowed Lady Amy Mowbray who is not only wealthy but also intelligent and funny, attributes he finds very appealing. He is determined to pursue her but Amy isn’t about to fall at his feet and, for once in his life, Gervaise will have to work hard if he wants to win this lady’s heart.

Amy and Gervaise are such likeable characters and watching their romance unfold was delightful. I cheered Amy for not having her head turned by his handsome face and obvious charm, and wanting a proper courtship to get to know him better before risking her reputation. For a man who is used to having any woman he wants, this is a new and intriguing experience for Gervaise.

I like how the courtship not only heightens the sexual tension but also acts as a catalyst for a growing sense of trust and intimacy between them; enough to share things they have never shared with anyone else. Gervaise reveals the pain of his bleak and loveless childhood and Amy starts to see the real man beneath the handsome face. Amy reveals intimate details of her marriage and Gervaise realises that Amy has never known desire or passion in her marriage, something he is determined she will experience in his ams.

I love a story where the hero pursues a reluctant heroine, but there were times when I felt sorry for Gervaise. At the age of thirty, he has finally met a woman he really cares for who doesn’t seem to want him. But “faint heart never won fair lady” and he is willing to do anything to please Amy and I especially love the thoughtful but unusual gift he gives her.

Despite her apprehensions, Amy is not immune to Gervaise. She sees how caring and considerate he is and how cherished he makes her feel and I cheered her on when she decides that she wants a taste of the passion she has always been denied. Ms. Campbell always succeeds in writing love scenes that emotional, tender and sensual.

“I want to please you.”
You do.” He ran his hand down her arm, delighting in her silky skin, and laced his fingers with hers. “You will.”
Her fingers twined around his with a swift trust that made his heart somersault. Pascal leaned in and placed his lips on hers, leashing his ravenous passion.
She responded with the sweetness so essential to her nature. Under his gentle exploration, she sighed, and the tension gradually seeped from her body. Taking exquisite care, he began to touch her, finding the places that made her tremble.

However, some overheard gossip seems set to destroy their new-found happiness but Amy is mature enough to listen to what Gervaise has to say and consider everything she has learnt about him, before making a decision. Bravo to Ms. Campbell. How refreshing to find a heroine who doesn’t storm out as so many other heroines would have done.

I enjoyed the witty dialogue between Gervaise and Amy:

“I can’t think when you kiss me.”
He liked the sound of that even better. He smiled smugly. “Then clearly kisses must be allowed.” She cast him a repressive glance.
“Clearly they mustn’t.” He closed his eyes and groaned.
“You’re going to kill me.”
“That would be a pity when you’re so spectacular to look at. Every lady in London will weep at your funeral.”

and the lovely touches of humour too:

“Who knows?” Morwenna sent Amy a sly glance. “Perhaps you’ll find Lord Pascal more entertaining than a field full of fat Herefords.”
“He’s definitely prettier than a Hereford,” Sally said.
“Sally, you have no idea how beautiful a fine cow can be,” Amy said with perfect sincerity.
Morwenna threw up her hands. “Amy, you’re utterly hopeless.”

We learn some interesting facts about the other Dashing Widows, Sally and Morwenna, which provide intriguing teasers for their own books. I am also curious to know what mischief Sally’s niece, Meg, is up to.

This novella can be read as a standalone but it would be a pity to miss the other novellas in this series.

MY VERDICT: Another charming novella to add to this delightfully entertaining series which I can definitely recommend.

3.5/5 Stars.

A pretty straightforward and predictable plot, however the maturity of the heroine made this an enjoyable read - even though jarring at some points. I'd recommend this if you're looking for a fun, sweet read with two level-headed MC's.

Amy has been a wallflower pretty much her entire life, more interested in agricultural adventures than balls-gowns and trysts in libraries she married a much older man, if only for a companion and someone who shared her love of agriculture. Years later, as a widow she makes a stellar comeback into society with the help of a friend - and some fancy gowns and hairdresser. She's no longer a wallflower! Enter, our hero.

Pascal is known as London's most handsomest gentleman (I really didn't know there was a People's sexiest/handsomest man in regency England but hey) and is quite tired of the title. His estate is in shambles and he needs money - but don't expect too much information as to why, how much or why he doesn't have any savings considering how rich these folks were. The story expects you to just accept that he needs money - and I did. He decides a rich wife is the solution to all his problems, but unfortunately all the debutantes are too dumb and young for him. Enter Amy.

From here on the plot if predictable, but enjoyable.

I loved loved that despite the eventual reveal of "Oh my god, was this all a farce - does he only want my money" Amy behaves like a woman with a mind, that functions. She doesn't devolve into hysterics and theatrics but actually thinks

What a joy that is!

Another fabulous story to keep the reader smiling for a few hours MS Campbell has a way with words that will keep you thinking about the characters from one of her stories for a long time after you reach the end.

Amy Mowbray is a widow and a country girl her cows and farm are what make her happy love romance she never thinks of those or maybe once when she was a girl of fourteen but now with her two friends Amy is hitting the season in London only to keep her sister in law company but that could all change when she runs into the one and only person that ever made her heart jump the most handsomest man Lord Pascal.

Gervaise Darcre Lord Pascal has come to London to find a wife the time has come where this needs to be done for a couple of reasons but being who he is the Ladies flock to him being so handsome is not always a good thing and these young girls are not what he wanted but then he spies the most beautiful woman in the room and sets his sights on her and what a find she is but Amy is going to make him work hard to win her over something that has never happened to him before. Let the journey begin.

Truly this is a fabulous story the banter between Gervaise and Amy is awesome you will be smiling and sighing as Amy leads Lord Pascal on one of the most sensual and amazing roads to such a glorious HEA. Don't miss this one grab a drink of your choice sit back and enjoy thank you MS Campbell for another keeper.

I can't believe that it's taken me four books to realize that the titles are reversed. It's not the men who are being seduced, pursued, etc., but the women. And I have no idea why they, whoever chose the titles, did that.

Nonetheless, Lord Pascal pursued and eventually caught Amy, and it was a most enjoyable chase to read. I had a moment of trepidation that something really stupid was going to happen, but it didn't.

As reviewed at Roses Are Blue: http://wp.me/p3QRh4-rz

Poor Lord Pascal - he is so beautiful that just his presence has the effect of leaving most debutantes stammering, giggling, or just speechless. But he must endure and find a wealthy lady to wed to bail him out of financial difficulties with his estates. He's prepared to give up his rakish ways and become a good husband - if only all the young girls weren't so silly. Then he sees Amy, Lady Mowbray, walk into the room, and he is immediately smitten.

Amy and her friends, Sally and Morwenna, are the next generation of dashing widows. Amy is an intelligent lady who has always loved farming, and her unusual conversation led her to making a shambles of her debut season years ago. She married an older man who was more companion and friend than lover, and who died after two years of marriage. Only agreeing to come to town so that her grieving widowed sister-in-law will come as well, Amy expects to flop in society again, as she did years ago. Imagine her surprise when she is approached by Gervaise, Lord Pascal, who shows interest in her. When she was fourteen years old, Amy had a secret crush on Gervaise, an older man of nineteen, who was visiting her home.

When Gervaise learns that Amy is a wealthy widow, he feels that his prayers have been answered. He has a genuine attraction and liking for her, so if he can convince her to marry him, his financial woes will be solved. Not only that, but he'll have a wife who stimulates him intellectually and stirs his passion. Everything has always come easy to Lord Pascal, but Amy is going to make him work to win her.

I like how Lord Pascal was willing to dance to Amy's tune and genuinely court her. I also appreciate that his motives weren't purely financial. I love that Amy, who was never a social success, still has the gumption to demand a courtship. One of my favorite parts of this story was Amy's reaction when she overhears gossip that Gervaise is a fortune hunter, only pursuing her to rescue him from his difficulties. Hooray for intelligent women who think and allow explanations to be made! I enjoyed and recommend PURSUING LORD PASCAL, which has Anna Campbell's trademark charm, entertainment, and steam.

This is probably my favorite book of the series so far.

Lady Amy Mowbray is a widow and the youngest of the Nash siblings. She has spent the last five years in seclusion on her estate and has been persuaded to go to London for the season by her widowed sister-in-law and family friend.

Amy has no interest in remarrying and even less in London society, but she agrees to go and even enters a "dashing widow" pact with Morwenna and Sally.

Gervaise Dacre, Earl Pascal, is in dire need of a wealthy wife, "the handsomest man in London" has come to town to find a rich bride so he can repair his estates. Problem is all the young heiresses bore him silly. While dancing with a prospective bride, he spots a young woman entering the ballroom and is immediately drawn to her. Knowing he must marry well, he delighted to find out that the mystery woman is in fact a wealthy widow. Pascal is determined to marry Amy and turns on the charm, only to find out that the one woman he wants is the one immune to his practiced charms.

Amy can't believe that her girlhood crush is actually flirting with her and she is leery of the attention. Amy has some serious self-esteem issues and doesn't know her own worth, nor does she believe anyone who tries to convince her.

Amy and Pascal begin a courtship and slowly fall in love. This love is tested when Amy finds out the truth of her initial meeting with Pascal and all the self doubt rises up again.

I loved this story and Amy and Pascal are wonderful characters. The story moves along quickly and didn't feel like a novella - it had a lot of depth. It is well written, flows nicely, has steamy love scenes and the conflict between Amy and Pascal is not drug on and on.

I would definitely recommend this book, it could be a stand alone title with no problems at all, and I can't wait for Sally and Morwenna's stories!!

Pursuing Lord Pascal is the fourth book in the Dashing Widows series by Anna Campbell. This series originally was of three young widows just out of mourning who decide to have some fun... fortunately for those of us who have loved this series, Anna Campbell decided to continue on with three more widows and a jilted suitor from one of the previous books.

Sometimes it was no fun to be London’s handsomest man.... Gervaise Dacre, Earl Pascal needs to marry into money quickly to save his estate. But unfortunately none of the pretty airheaded debutantes of this season have caught his eye.

Amy, Lady Mowbray is the youngest sister of Silas (Book 1) & Helena (Book 3). Amy married at 18 to a man 40 years older than her. Amy's marriage was not of love but of friendship and she honestly has never been in love - except for a violent fit of puppy love for Lord Pascal when she was 14....

Amy and Gervaise were such great characters that I immediately liked them! Poor Gervaise, after being used to having women chase him it was new for him to finally want a woman who might possibly not want him. Amy struggles to believe that this handsome man could want someone like her. Their courtship was a joy to watch and what a refreshing change that our hero actually fell for the heroine first. I enjoyed how Amy made Gervaise actually court her and realize that she was worth the effort. As for Gervaise he was much more than just a handsome rake and I truly loved Amy for seeing the real man beneath the mask. What a wonderful couple and another fantastic story to add to this series!

Anna Campbell must have had such fun writing Pursuing Lord Pascal, and yet there is a fair bit of angst in this story too. Regardless which bits I was reading, I loved the story as a whole. This might be a novella, but don't let that fool you. This is a slick piece of writing with beautiful character development and a plot to match. I was drawn in from the first page and truly felt as though I were watching scenes from real life. This is the fourth of Anna Campbell's Dashing Widows stories and the first that I have read although having read this one I'll be going back to read the other three in short order. This story has been just brilliant!

What a book jem!

Even though this is book 4 in the series, it can certainly be read as a standalone book because this is where I started and it was an amazing book! I loved that Amy had interest outside of being just a wife and that the hero valued what she was able to bring to the relationship besides her wealth.

This was a bit of a distracted read and I was never really invested in the romance. Thankfully, a strong heroine and good writing saved this in the end.

The story follows Amy - our next generation of dashing widows - and her titular hero Lord Pascal. Something something about him being a handsome man who is looking for a rich wife and falls in lust-love with our heroine. Blah blah

Our heroine is more interesting, being a farmer and quite frank and blunt. She makes her hero work for her hand which was refreshing. Yes, most of the romance is quite conventional as despite the heroine being a farmer the bulk of the novel has her being ingenue to the experienced hero.

There wasn’t as much banter I would have liked which kept me from really paying attention but thankfully every time I got bored Amy saved the day.

Frankly it was her sense near the end that made me like the book in the end. There was no unnecessary “woe is me” antics where her heroines replaced her considerable brains for pudding. That was enough of a change that - 3 stars it is.

Interesting as Lady Mowbray has no idea that she is a comely woman.
As a widow and a noted blue stocking regarding agricultural matters, she has been in a marriage of convenience with a much older man.
When her friends, the Dashing Widows, encourage and then drag her to London, she meets her pre teen crush, Lord Pascal.
He needs money to repair damage to his estate and turns his attention to her as she is considered very rich. Only after he pursues her does he find himself intrigued by her mind and attitude.
She has trouble believing that one of the tons most beautiful men finds her attractive.
The pursuit stumbles and resumes as each realizes the depth of feeling and when Lord Pascal’s need for money is revealed to the lady, a surprising turn takes place.

I wasn't expecting to love this, my relationship with the rest of the series has been a bit hit (Fenella's story was lovely) and miss (Caro and Silas were MADE for each other and I don't mean that as a compliment) so far, but then I read it in two days and teared up at the ending.

Amy was LOVELY, the practical heroine of my dreams!, and her and Pascal were absolutely adorable together.

My one complaint is that when the book started using Pascal's first name on a regular basis I couldn't help a few giggles, it's GERVAISE for heaven's sake, but that's a very minor niggle. otherwise, a wonderful book that made me go all gooey multiple times! <3

This couple was so easy to like. Grounded Amy and handsome Gervaise, are both seen by society in a limited way. What turns out to be interesting is that they mesh well together, which is contrary to their public images. Reality of circumstances set Gervaise on a certain path in the beginning, which we see change or evolve into more rather quickly for him. However, much later on, when Amy finds out about his initial motives, the scene is very intense and surprising. It made me like them both even more.

This was a sweet, charming quick read. I loved how Amy challenged Pascal and made him reach beyond the tired, traditional ways of wooing; I loved how he responded and how her friends called her out when she was dithering. I loved the introduction of a new set of dashing widows.

I also really liked how the final conflict came up and then was resolved; the hurt felt real, the risk felt real, but both characters addressed it in a way that worked for their growth throughout the story, and it was quite lovely.

I had started reading this series some time ago.. Stopped and restarted. I liked a couple so far. They are short stories, which can be good for a great writer. This had a nice story, however it like watching a movie and the director realize that hey I have a certain amount of pages and words to go so I need to wrap up and here come an abrupt ending. It's just rushed.

For such a strong female character, it would have been better to extend the story and give justice to the plot.

I could be wrong. Will try the other book.

Another sexy, sensuous story in this series

I love a romance where the heroine blossoms and wins the most gorgeous man. In this story she also doesn't submit easily and you honk the HEA is in reach when the twist occurs. Well written and satisfying. I'm looking forward to reading all of the stories of these dashing widows!

Paging Lord Pascal

What a delightful and wonderful story, with just the right amount of hot sizzling sex. Book 1 of this series was wonderful, books 2 & 3, not so much. Which is unusual because Ms Campbell is one of my top five authors. Her status has been upgraded again with this story. I cannot wait to read the remaining books in the series.

Dashing

This is the fourth Dashing Widows book with a new set of Dashing Widows. Amy is the first and you have to love her... Lord Pascal, Genvaise, a crush from when she was 14, and a handsome rake in need of a wealthy wife falls under her spell. I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next two.

DNF. The hero was just too conceited for me to care about his backstory. Also he was weirdly mad at the heroine for making him woo her even though he's into her. "Just fall into my arms! Who cares about what you want!"

Another Charmer

I gave this 5 stars because as the series progresses, the books becomes more engrossing and this one was no different. Anna Campbell managed to take me on a trip in my mind and make me fall in love with her characters.
