Anchor Point #1

Just Drive

Rate this book
For Sean Wright, driving a cab in the tiny Navy town of Anchor Point isn’t an exciting job . . . until he picks up just-dumped Paul Richards. A drive turns into a walk on the pier, which turns into the hottest hookup Sean’s had in ages.

After a long overdue breakup, Paul can’t believe his luck. Of all the drivers, he’s picked up by the gorgeous, gay, and very willing Sean. Younger guys aren’t usually his thing, but Paul can’t resist.

One taste and neither man can get enough . . . right up until they realize that Paul is Sean’s father’s commanding officer and the last man Sean should be involved with.

With two careers on the line, their only option is to back off. It’s not easy, though; the sex and the emotional connection are exactly what both men have been craving for a long time. But Paul has devoted twenty-four years to his career and his dream of making admiral. If he’s caught with Sean, that’s all over. He has to choose—stay the course, or trade it all for the man who drove off with his heart.

This is one of the best L.A. Witt books I've read in a long time.

I loved the two MCs and the chemistry between them. What begins as a one-night stand turns into something more. Even when Sean and Paul figure out that Paul is Sean's father's commanding officer, they can't stay away from each other.

Paul craves Sean more than he craves nicotine. And Sean is tired of the Navy taking over his life.

There is no manufactured drama, no fake angst. The men are amazing together, yet the relationship seems doomed from the start because it breaks all the rules.

Maybe some rules are meant to be broken.

Highlights:

- AGE GAP (Paul is old enough to be Sean's dad, but he's not; he's definitely not.)

- SIZZLING SEX (We're talking XXX rated! Paul is the hottest power bottom ever, and their first time over the back of a car had me panting. Sweetbabyjesus, come to mama.)

- HEA (which required sacrifice and made the epilogue that much sweeter)

- Paul's friend Travis, whose story is next!

- Sean's dad, who really came through in the end.

Complaints:

- I wanted to know more about both men outside the relationship vortex: What is Sean studying? Does Paul ever talk to his family?

- The way the men talked around their ages was just weird. I found inconsistencies that had me scratching my head.

My niggles are relatively minor, though.

Just Drive is a very sexy, relationship-focused story about a tatted up silver fox and the one man who makes him realize there's more to life than the military.

I couldn't put this one down and can't wait for book 2.

May/December romance between two sexy men? Yep!

We've got Paul:

A career Navy man of 24 years. An ex-pilot, he wants to command his own aircraft carrier and make Admiral before retirement.

We've got Sean:

A twenty-something college student still living at home, he drives a cab to help make ends meet.

The men meet when Sean picks Paul up in his cab. The sexual attraction is instantaneous and we get some backseat sex and some bent-over-the-trunk-of-the-car sex. Oh, yes indeed!

The sex continues over the course of a few weeks, both men drawn to one another over the ridiculously hot sex. They always meet in a no-tell-motel because Paul lives on base and Sean lives with his dad. And they don't do a whole lot of talking when they can steal a few hours to get together.

After those few weeks, they put some pieces together and realize that Paul is Sean's dad's commanding officer. According to Navy regulations, that is considered fraternization since Paul controls Sean's dad's career. They have to stop seeing each other. Bummer!

The boys break up, but they pine for one another terribly. They both realize that sex wasn't the only thing holding them together.

Now, so far, so good. The break-up was sad but I loved how they couldn't get each other out of their minds. But them the problems I have with the book start.

They can't bare to be apart so they continue to see each other in the no-tell-motels. BUT, every time they meet up, they start with, "We can't do this! You could get fired! This is so wrong!" Hot, sweaty sex happens and they end with, "We absolutely CAN'T see each other again. It's way too risky! Goodbye forever." Over and over and over again. It got old and was so angsty and made these two even more miserable. I wasn't on-board with these clandestine hookups and by the time the climax of the book happened, I was so over it all.

Another thing I had a hard time with was the complete lack of information Paul had about Sean. How old was he, exactly? What was he going to school for? What did he hope for his future? Did he have any siblings? Paul did eventually learn about Sean's mom and dad and how hard it was to be a Navy brat, but never any of the other stuff. Not on page anyway. I kept waiting for it, but was disappointed in the end when no further information was given.

But the HEA was delightful and I cried when the "I love you's" were said. We also met Paul's flight buddy Travis and he will be the focus of the next book. Hurt/healing/comfort is promised!

Despite it's flaws, I enjoyed this sexy romance and can recommend it.

➦I'm super duper behind on my reviews so I'm gonna make it short. L.A. Witt is a new to me author and I have to admit I enjoyed the writing a lot. I'll definitely be on the lookout for more of her stuff in the future :)

➦This novel is about Sean, a young college student who who lives with his father and is a dependent of the Navy. He has been moving wherever his father gets stationed and drives a cab at night for extra income.

➦One night Sean picks up a very attractive stranger who wishes to drive around without destination in mind. Paul is much older than Sean and seems to be going through a breakup. Sparks fly and these two start an affair until they realize that Paul is Sean's dad's commanding officer.

Will they be able to stay away from each other? Is Paul willing to risk his career for Sean? How is Sean going to react to coming in second to Paul's and his dad's career?

➦If you enjoy M/M novels that are a bit on an angsty side you might like this one here. There's a definite age gap - Paul is the same age as Sean's dad. So just keep that in mind.

➦The story is pretty steamy and definitely not slow burn but the pace of the story is a bit on the slow side. I'd say it was a pretty steady pace but I found myself getting a tiny bit bored somewhere in the middle. But thankfully it picked up and finished strongly. I might or might not have shed a happy tear at the end. I'll never tell! Laterz, need. to. write. more. reviews!!!

L.A. Witt is probably my most read author, but her books are always hit or miss for me, tending to average around 3-stars. However, I've loved her stuff in the past, so I always take a chance with her, and in this case, it payed off.

Just Drive is a hot romance with a military man and a big age-gap between the two MCs. Both of these things were huge factors in my rating. I LOVE a May-December romance, especially in M/M, and it really worked for me here. While military romances aren't especially my thing, that is mostly because I don't like romantic suspense. Give me a man in uniform OUTSIDE of a suspense-story, and I'm like freakin' putty!

Here is a question to ponder: Does a book need to have a real plotty-plot to be a success? If you think so, then this book might not work for you. To be honest, nothing really... happens in this story. Sure, the men spend a lot of time pondering "should we, shouldn't we" and making out, but the plot is veeeeery thin, verging on nonexistent. I didn't mind, really, because the sex was hot and I was into their dynamic, but I can see how that would bother some readers.

There was a lot of back and forth in this story, which got repetitive, but I still was happy overall. I think that the chemistry was there, which overrode a lot of flaws. And that ending... gah, pure romancey-romance HEA! That, my friends, is why we read these kinds of stories.

Solid 4 Stars!

I was SUPER hesitant to request this one. I was thinking LA and I were going to have to break up. I didn't bother initially requesting this one from NetGalley. But then some friends started reading it, some that had felt the same way about LA Witt's books as of late. And low and behold, they were liking it.

So I thought....okay. Let's live on the edge.

And I am super glad I gave this one a go. We've got a nice age gap, though I have no idea what it was exactly....15 years? Something - there was some conflicting information.

Low angst given the fact that they had to keep their "relationship" a secret.

Verra steamy - LA Witt rarely fails there.

My only complaint was that the MCs seemed to have the same internal thoughts over and over again regarding the fact that they "couldn't" be together and how the Navy always ruins relationships, etc.

Still a solid read and a great start to the series. I can't wait for Travis' book next!

If there is one thing I can pretty much count on, it's that when LA Witt puts out a military themed novel, I'll probably like it. Even though they often follow a similar formula, she just does them so well!

Just Drive is the first book in her new Anchor Point series, and I really enjoyed it. I liked both MC's, their chemistry is scorching and so is the sex. And I loved the age-gap, aspect and that it was the younger guy doing the topping!

Sean Wright is young. We never find out his exact age, but based on everything I could determine while reading Just Drive, I'd say he is around 21. He's been a Navy dependent all his life, since his father is a career Naval officer. So, Sean knows that the sacrifices involved in being part of a military family are more than just what the service members themselves sacrifice. It's hard being left behind every time your significant other or parent gets deployed, not to mention the frequent moves. The pressures and constant moving cost his parents their marriage and Sean is still living it. He's an adult, now, but he is still living at home so he can go to school and keep medical benefits. But even still, Sean has had to leave friends, and boyfriends, behind time and again.

Captain Paul Richards has been in the Navy for 24 years (he's 42). He's a graduate of the Naval Academy, a former fighter pilot and he's had his whole being set on making Admiral before retirement. He's so close, but until the Navy entrusts him with commanding a ship, he's not even in the running. So, being single focused and dedicated, he drives on. But Paul has experienced his share of Navy casualties, too. He's been married and divorced twice and has had a string of failed relationships since the repeal of DADT. He had to hang up his wings after a catastrophic landing injured him too badly to continue that path and the only thing keeping him in the Navy is the hope of promotion.

So when Sean picks Paul up at a hotel, right after Paul's latest breakup, neither of them was expecting their chemistry to burn so hot. But it did, and what should have been nothing more than a one-night-stand, soon turned into 'any time we can be in the same room'…until they both figured out the score. Sean's dad is in the Navy, too and is a subordinate of Paul's. Ouch. But by then, they were both well and truly in too deep.

My only real complaint was that once they both figured out that they shouldn't be seeing each other because of the chain of command issue, they went too long with the 'one last time' encounters before a resolution was finally reached. But, I have to say, in spite of that one niggle, I loved this story.

I'm also happy that the next book will feature Paul's friend Travis. He seems about ready to be blindsided with love, considering his advice to Paul. I think Just Drive is a great start to this series, and I am looking forward to the next book!

What can I say that I haven't said in my many status updates?

I frigging LOVED this book!!
I have a soft spot for age gap stories and this hit it perfectly.

At about 24 years of age Sean Wright is still stuck with his US Navy dad currently stationed in Anchor Point. The Navy pays for his tuition and health insurance, so Sean puts up with moving around with his dad, moving from school to school and leaving (boy)friends behind. He's now in college, earning some money on the side as a private cab driver (something like Uber, I guess).

When an older military guy (well, mid-40s, really) hires his cab and asks him to 'Just Drive', Sean is curious and wants to know more about the man on his backseat. Not that it's any of his business, of course.

Base CO Captain Paul Richards was just dumped by his last boyfriend and craves nothing more than a cigarette. The Navy has just cost him another boyfriend, although he had seen it coming. Long-distance relationships never lasted long in the Navy, after all.

The handsome young cab driver indulges him by following his weird request to just drive around for a bit. They end up at the pier, where Paul takes a walk in fresh air. When the young driver takes him up on his request to join him, he realizes that the guy is gay too... and interested.

Now wouldn't it be nice to forget his last break-up by engaging in a sweaty rebound fuck with this handsome stranger? Who cares that the guy was young enough to be his son?

One hot dirty encounter leads to another (one needs a cab every now and then, after all) and both men can't keep their hands (and minds) off each other.

However, their bubble of happiness bursts when Sean realizes that Paul isn't just *any* Navy officer, but actually the base CO and his dad's highest ranking superior on site. Even with DADT no longer present, a Captain cannot have relations with one of his subordinate's dependents, even if the age gap and same sex thing weren't an issue.

Paul has spent his entire life building his military career and he's just one star away from making admiral. How could he risk both his and Sean's dad's career for a sweet guy half his age?

I absolutely LOVED this story. Paul's motivation to keep up his military career was so strong and so clear that I had no doubt that their relationship would either have to somehow work around this or fail. Paul's romantic motivation to be with Sean was the total opposite of that, so reading this felt like watching two freight trains speeding towards each other. I couldn't keep my hands of the book, waiting for the collision - and hoping for someone to interfere and switch tracks, so they could co-exist without destroying each other.

The only downside was the fact that Sean wasn't portrayed as detailed as Paul. Paul was clearly the star of the book. We got to know everything about him, while Sean remained a bit of a mystery. What was he interested in? What was he studying for?! Didn't he have any friends?!

It's not a huge secret that things will work out for them, but I was totally unsure how they'd solve the Navy issue.

The ending was pure Romance Heaven! It was so much sweeter than anything I could have come up with while hoping for a happy ending ;-)

This book is a 5 star favorite for me!

I can hardly wait for the next book about Travis Wilson, Paul's best friend and Navy buddy. The tiny bits of backstory on him sounded absolutely awesome!!

If I had to make a list of things that make me happy, LA's words would most certainly make the cut. I feel like she has this weird sixth sense and knows when I need her book hugs.
After days of deep book conversations about another book that did not make me happy, this was the soothing balm my book soul needed.
It was smoking hot.
It was juicy and sweet.
It was...JUST what I needed. It made me smile and glow.
Thank you LA for somehow always knowing what I need and coming to my literary rescue. I promise to follow your words for as long as they come.

Sean’s entire life has rotated around the US military. He has toured the world during his adolescent years but in contrast, he’s never been able to plant any roots. No long-lasting friendships, no long-term boyfriends; only a long list of places he’s been. He wants to find his place, his home. He’s going to college and driving a taxi while he figures out his future. One thing he never anticipated was falling for a man bound to the same chains as him. It’s always been easiest to steer clear of any love interest from the base. He knows first hand that base life is not fair or gentle with relationships. Best to avoid those sinking ships from the get go. However, when he picked up a fare with a bleeding heart he reconsiders his previous rule. He’ll make an exception just this one time, besides what can it hurt?

Paul knew the spark had burnt out and it was time to muster the courage to say goodbye to his boyfriend, but that didn’t lessen the sting. If there’s one thing he’s familiar with, it’s broken romance. He’s hurt and angry and desperately needs a distraction from his empty life. Paul is almost to his career goal and has sacrificed greatly in the process. He wants to slip away from the realities of his hollow life and just let go. When a young sexy cab driver presents just the opportunity he craves, he pounces. It’s only meant to wash away the bitter memories of his last boyfriend but it quickly turns into so much more. He can’t lose focus, the only thing that matters is a star. Within a blink of an eye a star turns into a galaxy of stars. How will Paul decide if one star is enough anymore?

What's to like: The story picks up quickly and the heat factor burns brightly from the very beginning. There is never a lull or stale sensation. The pace is driven on the force of the ‘what if' and ‘if only' excitement. The connection between Sean and Paul is magnetic and full of raging lust. There is no shortage of sexy time. A significant age gap separates the two. This was a sensitive spot for me in the past, but no longer. They complimented each other well and I was rooting for them the entire time.

What's to love: I love the way Witt creates a storm of impossibilities and then drags us through the storm to prove it is indeed possible. I love her creation of characters that are meant to be together despite everything trying to keep them apart. I love how she proves that ultimately love has the power to win. I simply love her stories, her characters, and how she crafts them. This is why I never pass up one of her books, and I’m sure you’ll adore this amazing book as well.

Beware of: Hefty age difference. As I said earlier, Paul is much older than Sean. But as we discover, age is only a number. When it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. A few discrepancies sneak up regarding the actual age of the men but the message is clear, Paul is twice Sean’s age. Also be prepared for a silver fox with ink who has a sexy body and knows how to use it.

This book is for: If warriors are your thing, I imagine you are a fan of Witt and her boys. If not, allow me to introduce you….and recommend you start with this ride. Hold on, it’s about to get….so good.

This was so incredibly romantic. I loved these guys.

Sean is driving his taxi when he picks up a heartbroken older guy. Paul has just broken up with his boyfriend and tells his driver to ‘just drive’.

And although Paul is sad his relationship is over, there is an instant connection with Sean. And after an unexpected walk on the pier, they end up parked somewhere for an incredibly hot encounter.

Paul tells himself not to contact the guy who blew his mind with one simple hookup, and is 20 years younger than he is, but he simply cannot resist.

After this they keep meeting to have hot smoking sex, and it’s not long before both acknowledge that there are feelings involved. That is until they find out that Paul is Sean’s father’s commanding officer..

I loved how these guys couldn’t stay away from each other. L.A. Witt really hit the mark with the whole star-crossed lovers feeling in this. I could just feel the longing, the need to be together.

The sex was explosive and just HOT HOT HOT! I also really loved how Sean, although younger, topped, while the bigger, older man bottomed. And not because of some sort of power play, but simply because that’s what they both liked best.

If you’re looking for an intense, incredibly sexy, sweet and romantic story, read this.

DNF at 70%

I considered to rate it, though I normally don't rate my DNF books. But I'd like to do it this time. I read 70% of it, I dare or?

I'm even ready to give a one star bonus for my unread 30% assuming that exactly this story-line COULD turn this book into a masterpiece. Unfortunately I'll never know it. Because I am not going to read MORE and because the first 70% was very mediocre if not even worse- it was rather a stereotypical list of EVERYTHING I normally DISLIKE in my MM romance books.

Let me explain:

1)THERE IS NO PLOT HERE. A lot of sex scenes with a weak attempt to put a story BETWEEN those sex scenes. I prefer A STORY with sex scenes. With emphasis on STORY, not on SEX SCENES.

2)INSTA LOVE. At least by their second encounter/sex they were determined for each other.

3)Men in uniform. They look good in it, I can understand. THEN GIVE ME anything TO BELIEVE I HAVE A MAN IN UNIFORM AS A MAIN CHARACTER.

4) Writing+Characters+Plot.

Do I need to add something more?
Well, probably the fact, that I'm not going to read anything by this author in the future. But it is just my very personal taste.

P.S I am in the minority, so just ignore me. As always.

Overall enjoyable, although not very memorable read.

The author wanted me to believe the MCs shared a deep emotional connection after hooking up a few times, but I didn't buy it.
There was too much sex and there were too few conversations in these first weeks in my opinion.
Too repetitive and long inner musings about all the reasons their relationship couldn't make it, before they even talked about being exclusive, and also afterwards.

They were cute together, though. I enjoyed their dynamics and the chemistry between them, once they started to talk.

L.A Witt where have you been all my life?! Lol! This was so good, love it. It had everything I love in a story, two amazing guys, age gap, military and a forbidden love.

Sean is a part time driver/student, on a drive he meets Paul, whom has just broken up with his ex and ends on the back of Sean's car. They start talking and next thing you know know they're making out hot and heavy. They start hooking up with no strings but of course emotions get in the way. Add to that the fact that Paul is Sean's dad's boss and that there's no fraternization allowed it just more obstacles for these two guys.

description

I absolutely loved the emotions this book made me feel I was totally captivated. Oh and the angst I went through with Sean/Paul my poor heart. Don't get me started on how hot they were together, super sexy. And even though they faced big obstacles in their relationship I liked the way they handle it, no games or unnecessary drama. Just two mature and amazing guys who fought so hard to stay away from each other but at the end their love was just too strong to deny. I have to mention Sean's dad he was such a great father a bit clueless but loving and supportive of his son. I'm glad he did right by him actually both Paul and him had me in total awe by the end of the book.

The epilogue was perfect! Oh and Sean, those 15 shades or red look good on you, but then love always looks good *wink*❤

Ooh, L.A. Witt does M/M romance in a military setting so well! This reminds me of Conduct Unbecoming (one of my favorite L.A. Witt novels) about two men's relationship in the shadow of the military's fraternization policy.

Paul Richards is the CO of the Anchor Point NAS, with over 24 years under his belt, looking to achieve admiral before retiring. One night after breaking up with yet another boyfriend, he hails a cab and tells the driver "Just drive." Before the night is over, Paul and the driver Sean have a blisteringly hot one-night stand ... which quickly turns into something more. At first their only problem seems to be age - Paul is quite a bit older than Sean (20+ years) - but soon they learn that .

I loved the relatively low-angst relationship between Paul and Sean and how they strive to do the best for all involved. L.A. Witt really shows that conflict between family and career and the hell that can cause relationships. We get Paul and Sean's POV alternately throughout the book, but I felt that Sean remained a bit of a mystery, i.e. we are never told exactly how old he is, and I'm not even sure what he was studying in college.

4 stars for Just Drive and I'm looking forward to the next book in the Anchor Point series.

As a Navy brat born and raised, I was almost giddy when this book mentioned places like San Diego (my birthplace) and Norfolk (we were stationed there twice). This book was going to be amazing and I. Could. Not. Wait!

Yeah, turns out I did not actually find this book to be amazing. I noticed early on that there was an awful lot of internal monologuing going on (which I hate). Way too much introspection in the form of whining & pining to themselves about the situation--Them: wanna-be-together-can't-be-together-want-you-need-you-life-sucks-hey-let's-hook-up-at-another-skeavy-motel--Me: Oh, god, please just shut the fuck up, already, you whiny little bastards!

At the 51% mark I couldn't handle it anymore and I began skimming. I was still curious enough to wonder how things would play out. Things picked up towards the end, but only slightly. I really liked all the parts that involved interactions between characters...with, oh, I don't know, dialogue, but it seemed like so much of the story took place inside their own heads. That level of self-reflection was exhausting.

Also, two very unclear things bugged me so much while I was reading that I seriously began to rethink my decision to skim because that was the only excuse I could come up with that would explain why, after repeated mentions of studying and coursework, I still have no fucking clue what Sean was studying. And two, can someone please tell me how old everyone is? We know Paul is 42 but then a ton of other numbers are thrown around in relation to Sean, his dad, the length of his dad's career, how old Sean was in relation to the length of Paul's career....I suck at math but pretty much nothing added up.

And please, do not get me started on the epilogue, which included a scene that Richard Gere would have been proud of, that had me torn between grinning in HEA glee and puking from the ridiculous sap.

I feel like all of this is reason enough for my rating. I don't know. I've read the other reviews here. People love this book. Maybe I'm just not the right reader for this, or at least, I'm not the right reader for Sean. I won't say I didn't like him, because that would not be true, but I definitely did not dig his attitude towards the Navy. Yes, everyone is different; and yes, many Navy kids might feel just like Sean. Resentful of what they have given up over the course of their lives just because their parent in serving in the military. This was not my experience as a Navy dependent. I went to ....*counts on fingers*... nine schools before I graduated from high school. That included three moves during high school (like Sean). My favorite story is how I was enrolled in three different schools in two different states all in August before eighth grade started. And yeah, it sucked donkey balls, but with that also came going to the beach every day after school when we lived in Puerto Rico, and it came with getting to have my dad's reenlistment ceremony at the freaking Liberty Bell, and it came with the almost-painful tears I shed every time I watched whatever aircraft carrier he was currently stationed aboard cross into Norfolk after being gone for what seemed liked forever....16 years after he retired my dad was laid to rest in his dress blues, surrounded by only red, white, and blue flowers because even our small town's two florists knew how much his service had meant to him and they went out of their way to coordinate the flower orders people placed....so, yeah, I had a hard time relating to Sean. At 13 you can get away with being a resentful, pissed off little shit when your dad's career fucks with your budding romance. You're a kid, you don't get to choose where you live. But at twenty-something? Not so much.

P.S. The sex? Smoking hot, though some of the locations left much to be desired.

For Sean, the attraction is instant because ... reasons

Note to self - don't check out passengers if you haven't gotten laid recently.

Sean is driving a cab part-time while he finishes school. His latest passenger, heartbroken from a recent breakup, asks Sean to "Just Drive".

Before the night is over those words have lit sparks in both of their lives.

But it has to be a one-night stand right? After all, Paul hasn't been in school for a very long time.

This kid doesn't remember presidents you voted for.

There's a 20 year age gap, but those sparks seem to have lit a fire that neither of them can stay away from. If that were the only issue, they could make a go of it. But there's a much bigger issue.

...I did not anticipate that!...

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this love story. It brought back memories of another time. A time that young people today are not familiar with. The generation gap has never seemed so huge.

It also clued me in on military life and what dependents are and live through. There was a poignant scene between Sean and his Dad which literally brought me to tears.

Overall, I felt quite emotional reading this one. I fought off tears several times. Maybe it's never too late. And maybe the right decision isn't always the most obvious one.

It took me four and a half goddamned decades to find you, and you'd better believe you were worth the wait.

Damn. Age gap? Yup. Hot monkey sex? Yup. Good, drive you batshit plot with a resolution that isn't drawn out to kingdom come? Yup. A bit angstier than I usually like but I was really invested in these two and wanted to see them work, dammit. I haven't liked much of LA Witt's work in awhile but if this is what I can expect from this series. I.Am.Sold. Ha!

Boy, did this book call out to me:

Age gap + forbidden romance + military = hells yeah!

And it delivered! What starts off as a one-night stand quickly turns into more.

What I loved:

-Sean and Paul. They were great individually and together. Even though they were in different stages of their lives, they still fit together perfectly.

-The forbidden romance. There's some about a secret rendezvous that ticks my buttons. It's exciting and fun- it feels like when you have a crush on someone.

-Relationship development. As mentioned above it all begin with a one-night stand that turned into seeing each other more and more. Their feelings for each other felt real, and you could feel how torn they felt. They knew it was wrong on multiple levels but how do you walk away from something that feels so right?

-Chemistry. It is off the charts hot!! HOLY. COW. You may want to be home while reading this one.

-Narration: dual POV.

-Pace. It's easy and quick.

-Angst. It's there but not overwhelming.

-The end- it's awesome!

LA Witt has a winner on her hands! You don't want to miss out on this one! HIGHLY RECOMMEND. 4 Stars.

3.5 stars - another sweet and sexy romance for LA Witt with a military setting, age-gap, 2 very sexy guys and a relationship-oriented story.

Paul is a military man, through and through. After being a pilot, he’s aiming to become Admiral, in the expense of his personal relationships. That is, until one night, when he calls for a cab and meets Sean, twice less his age. A one night encounter that leads to another meeting and then another one, because the attraction is strong, really strong.

Tbh, the first half of the book was a 5 stars for me : 2 lovable characters, no unnecessary melodrama, great banter, scorching chemistry and sex. Just 2 great guys who just get on and let their relationship go naturally from one encounter to something more. Exactly why I loved her previous books such as the The Best Man, Rules of Engagement or Conduct Unbecoming.
However, even though I enjoyed the rest of the book, I wished we had more development around Sean’s life or that the ending didn’t feel so rushed for me. And the epilogue : nice and realistic until
Still, a solid read and a very good start for this series. I’m looking forward to the next book about Travis.

Witt is a hit-or-miss author for me, but I’m happy to say that she hit it outta the park with this one. Just Drive had two very likeable characters, a delicious age gap, sheet melting sexy times, an “I love you” moment that literally made me cheer (and then sigh happily), and a conflict that successfully sidestepped manufactured melodrama and was resolved to my utter satisfaction. Also, the sweetness and romance of the epilogue left me grinning. What a fabulous start to a new series!

I seem to be getting over my age gap issues...

and if I'm not well, I need to be since I keep reading books where the MCs have significant age gaps.

It's been quite a while since I've read an L.A. Witt book and I've had this one on my TBR list since it was released so once again I can thank the joys of audiobooks for helping me take a bite out of that pile.

Let's start with the audio portion of this review because that's going to be short and sweet. Nick J. Russo was the narrator and as usual he did not fail me. His voices for both Sean and Paul were spot on for me. I loved Paul's deep voice with it's hint of gravel to it and Paul's voice had a bit of a younger tone to it and matched my minds idea of a twenty-somethings voice wonderfully. I love the emotion he instills in these characters. I don't have to try and imagine Paul's anger, frustration, passion, love for Sean or Sean's emotions as these two men struggle to sort things out and figure out how to be together...Mr. Russo gives those emotions in spades with his narration of this story.

As for the story...well 4 standing at attention stars...I think it's safe to say that I really liked this story. The age difference was a definite issue for these men. Paul's the CO of the local navel base...Sean's father is the Senior Chief on said navel base...he reports to Paul...Sean's listed as his dependent...there are rules about this...rules that can end careers if news of their relationship gets out.

The age difference on this one is a solid 20+ years and I was ok with it because of how it was represented. It was shown in where these two men were at in their lives. Sean's in college and yes he still lives at home with his father but he's neither immature nor juvenile. He understands how much Paul's career means to him and he tries more than once to walk away for both Paul's sake and his father's. Paul's got two marriages and a few relationships plus a 24 year navel career under his belt. Yes there's a strong sexual relationship here but there's also a strong sense of mutual compatibility, shared interest and two people who just like each other. As well as a growing romantic relationship there's a bond of friendship and mutual respect developing between Paul and Sean.

The fact that the author didn't do the typical stereo-typing of making the older MC always be the voice of reason and the dominant sexual partner was definitely a refreshing take on this May/December romance as well.

Sean's relationship with his father was another aspect of this story that added more depth and believe-ability to things. Sean loved his dad and while he loved and respected his father, he also resented the impact that his father's career has had on his life. While his father loves him, they still find themselves at odds over things and they talk. Maybe things aren't always resolved instantly but again the love and mutual respect is evident. I really enjoy stories that give us real parents, not perfect just normal everyday people who love their kids and want to try and do what's best for them.

'Just Drive' is a wonderfully balanced story that easily felt like it could have happened at some navel base somewhere. But more than anything it was the ending of this story that tugged at my heartstrings. While our men may have gotten their happily ever after it was earned when changing priorities can only be achieved with compromise and sacrifice from everyone involved.

'Just Drive' was a story that worked 'just right' from start to finish.

Santa's Secret Ninja Elf, thank you sooo much!! I'm dying to read this one!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really liked this story! Great MCs with a big age-gap, great chemistry, believable development of their relationship, so much want and need, hot sex of course, outside forces that threaten to keep them apart, and most importantly a solution to their HEA that is not contrived by outside forces but accomplished through independent decisions and sacrifices made.
Some small niggles: I got a bit confused about their actual difference in age. Now, I admit that math isn't my strong point but I'm quite sure there were some inconsistencies in the hints that were given on their age. Paul is forty-two and I believe Sean to be in his early twenties.
I'd have liked to know more about Sean and Paul. What does Sean study for example? I found it odd that Paul never asked this question. Why does Sean never speak to his Mom? Does Paul speak to his parents at all? There's no interaction between Sean and his dad's girlfriend although they all live together.
There isn't much happening besides both men getting to know each other and finding their way to their HEA. There's basically no plot surrounding their relationship.
I found the back and forth between "I want you, I can't stay away from you." and "We can't do this, we can't see each other again." a bit repetitive and tiring after a while.
However, overall this was a sweet and steamy story that focused on the relationship between the MCs, and a great start to a new series by this author.
Nick J. Russo once again nailed his narration for this book and as always, I really enjoyed listening to him.
I think this will be a very nice series. I like military men, who doesn't!! The writing was very smooth and it had me interested from the very start.
Very likable characters and I loved the double POV!!! It makes the story so much interesting.
Paul
description
Sean and Paul meet one day when Sean picks him up as a cabdriver and Paul just asks him to just drive.
Immediately there is this attraction between these two men, even after they understand there is this big-age gap between them. What starts with a one-night-stand, turns into so much more. They don't seem to be able to stay away from each other.
description
When feelings start up, they understand there is no future for their relationship because Paul is Sean's father commanding officer. Their relationship would ruin both their careers in the Navy.
What I liked very much about this story was yes this was about a relationship between an older and a much younger man, but the older didn't seem to be the wisest. On all accounts, even in the sex-scenes. I appreciated this. Sean was not the typical young guy, he suffererd through this father employments all his life, was not able to make friends and finish his studies because of all the moving. He had to grow up fast.
So when it was made sure that even now Sean had to give up his love of his life for the sake of his father's carreer, my heart broke.
Needless to say the ending made me a very happy girl.
For me and Paul, there was nothing standing in our way anymore. The only thing in front of us was an open road.
And all we had to do was drive.
Will be looking forward to Travis's story. Paul's friend.
Looking for a plot in this book, between all the sex scenes, make-out sessions, and the pondering of should we/shouldn't we is like looking for a needle in a haystack... Nothing really happened really. It was rinse and repeat musing (and make out) between these two.
What do they really had in common? How come Paul was willing to throw his stars, his career for Sean, when none of his previous lovers were able to? I just didn't believe that Sean was a special case, a special snowflake when I wasn't even convinced that they really had something meaningful.
Like I put in my status, at one point Sean said "This wasn't even a relationship. Just sex with a few conversations to tide us over until we could get hard again" ... and heck, even Paul didn't notice what Sean studied at school.
The plot did appear around the last 1/4th part () but for me it was a lost cause. I gave extra half star for the epilogue though. That was sweet. But come on, for me story trumps smut every time!
Begins as a hook up between Sean, a young cab driver and Paul, an older military officer. Paul happends to just have ended his relationship with his boyfriend and isn't looking for something steady.Neither is Sean but their chemistry is 🔥🔥🔥 and they can't stop seeing each over. Won't spoil but something occurs wich make them brake up. Couldn't see any solution for this but out there was the perfect HEA 💙
4.25 Forbidden Romance Stars!
Just Drive
is the first book in the new Anchor Point series by L.A. Witt. Taking place in Anchor Point, Oregon, Just Drive is nestled deep within the confines of Navy life and rules...
Paul Richards is a career Navy officer. Commanding Officer of the Adams Naval Air Station, he's been firmly out of the closet ever since the repeal of the Don't Ask Don't Tell military rule. That being said, he still airs on the discreet side where his sexuality is concerned. Times have changed but it's still the military... One late night and long-past-due breakup with a current boyfriend, Paul hails a local cab. The cabbie is young and very hot with his jet black hair with dark blue highlights. And he's easily half his age... but damn.
Sean Wright is a local college student, cabbie on the side, and career Navy brat. His father is a high ranking Navy-man and Sean has never stayed anywhere long enough to gain any semblance of roots. When a call comes in on any typical evening, his world is rocked when a hot forty-something guy steps into his back seat and instructs him to "just drive..."
The connection, albeit a bit unconventional was instantaneous for Sean and Paul. Granted, Paul was on the rebound, but Sean was more than willing to "take away the blues." If there's one thing L.A. Witt can write, it's hot hot hot man-on-man loving! Add the additional angst that Paul is Sean's father's Commanding Officer and the potential for court martial if caught and we've got ourselves a perfect forbidden romance MM love story.
Their connection was palpable and only grew with each meeting but it's only too late when they realize the fatal connection between father and boyfriend. If the military has nothing else, its deeply entrained in rules of conduct. So what's it going to be? A lifetime in the military without love? Or love without his one life goal- admiral. Because Paul can't have both. And it's not just career on the line. It's also Sean's father's career. So what's got to give? Career or love? Because he can't have both...
I look forward to the next installment in the Anchor Point series!
Thick sensual and intense...
Sean and Paul
A book can get you by its first sentence, this one did.
One in his twenties and the other in his forties. They met in a awkward situation.
One as a cabdriver the other as a costumer "Just drive" said Paul....and their they go...
One with a just broke up relationships and the other with a long time without....
The drive turns out in one hot evening....and then they separate....
When they meet the second time they are both needy and fucked hard over the back of the cab. That was hot!
After the hooked up several times we get to know them better. They had a lot of hot sex and every time it was getting better. They were really running well together...until.....Sean tells his father works on the base....and Paul tells he is de CO of that base. Immediately the relationship is over and they split....f#%^*
After a few days they see each other by accident and the tension is thick. They leave opposite sides.
After a few weeks they meet again and the tension is even thicker
It's really hard to watch...they are both so devastated.
Even one time they booked a hotel but before something happens they split.
And then they see each other at a bar....you could feel the thick thick tension....
They were drug for each other.
Their longing and yearning was so strong described I did feel it al deeply.
Fuck they were so so intense, sometimes I almost couldn't handle it.
I had the feeling how further in this story the better and intenser it became.
It was heartbreaking...Sean was the grown up and made the decision.
He knew when Paul had to make the choice it wasn't him....and he also knew he would be second by his dad.
Both Sean and Paul were great guys and had lovely souls and they were so focused on each other it almost hurt.
The story switch from Sean to Paul's pov. Very satisfying!
All the circumstances were good developed and convincing.
It was a throughly intense read I recommend highly.
Good flow and catching way of writing and thank god it had my favorite HEA.
This starts with a breakup, followed by a one night stand between near strangers Sean and Paul.
I love a good May/December romance.
Just Drive works well as Paul and Sean initially begin seeing each other mainly for the truly terrific sex, but it slowly morphs into more as the two can't stop thinking about each other and continue to come together.
The tension comes when the two realize, after they've already fallen for each other, that if their relationship is discovered it could literally mean the end of two careers. Despite the possible consequences, Paul and Sean find it impossible to stay away.
This could have been super angsty, but it's not. I really liked the way Witt handled it, and it's brilliantly narrated by Nick J. Russo.
If you're a fan of Russo's - this is definitely an audio that should get on your playlist. Great character voices with smooth pacing, and when you factor in the sweet story and sexy times - this was an enjoyable 7+ hours.
Worth it!
Now THIS is classic Witt. Really well-written story with a punch to the gut of feelz. My eyelids were even sweating a bit. And the steam was verrrrry nice.
It did still have the typical Witt phrases, such as "You better believe it" and "It is what it is" - both many times. Interestingly missing though? The. Sentences. That. Provide. Emphasis. With. Periods. After. Every. Word. First book of hers I've read without it. Do you think she's onto the drinking game?
