Lullaby of the Dead: Every Ghost Has a Story

Rate this book
What can the dead teach the living? Landry Sinclair has a story to tell—listen carefully.I played the professional Los Angeles career woman. Beneath the façade, I was lonely, ashamed, with little self-awareness. My plans for upward mobility were squashed when I fell into the hands of a ruthless serial killer. I became entangled in his rich web of heinous acts. After he slipped a date-rape drug in my drink, then brutally tortured me, I awakened to an inescapable nightmarish realm on the wrong side of the mirror.

Locked inside a decaying mansion, unable to escape, I soon learned I was not alone.

Will I be forced to idle here for an eternity, peering through the mirror into my former world, helplessly watching as a homicidal monster butchers woman after woman?

We watch life through windows, mirrors, and doors—pay attention.

I know because I sing the Opus of the Dead.

If this was to be your last day on this planet, would you be satisfied with the life you have lived?  Have you existed in harmony with those around you- and within yourself?  What if your answer to these questions is a resounding 'No'?  Perhaps you have serious regrets or some unfinished business.  These are very weighty notions to be sure.  Even more serious is what would happen if you leave this life unexpectedly...and enter the afterlife with such misgivings in mind?  Sprinkle in aspects of mystery, romance and horror to that query and you have Lullaby of the Dead by author Lynn Lamb.  Readers who enjoy captivating metaphysical fiction with a dash of horror will fall very hard for this book.

Essentially, the novel follows the actions of the protagonist, Landry Sinclair, in life and after death.  At the outset of the novel, Landry is following the corporate path of upward mobility and can definitely be classified as a woman on the move.  However, something in her life is missing.  when she looks in the mirror she is troubled by the image staring back at her.  Before she has the opportunity to confront such an issue, while continuing her successful career path, Landry is brutally tortured and murdered by a sadistic serial killer.  After this horrible event, Landry awakens...but not in the world she is accustomed to.  She is in the afterlife and in the very home of her killer.  Landry now has a front row seat to view his cruel savagery as he continues to torture and murder helpless victims.  And she is not alone.  Will this be Landry's ultimate Hell?  To virtually relive her brutal demise for eternity?  Or is this just the beginning of something much larger in scope?

I found the plot of this novel to be totally engaging and enthralling.  There are a variety of twists and turns which will catch the reader unaware and entirely invested in the story.  I experienced a full range of emotions while reading the work. From anger and shock to sadness and joy.  There are also a number of themes which exist.  Some of them are indubitably quite dark!  However, I believe the theme of making peace with "one's self" is the most prevalent and alluring message in the novel.  To be able to pull that off when images of the afterlife and horrible deaths take place, is no easy feat.  The author manages to do this with apparent ease and obvious skill.

There are also a fair number of characters who are presented in this story.  They are all quite interesting and developed in the appropriate depth needed to play their corresponding roles.  I found the character of Topanga to be particularly intriguing.  He brought an element of calm reason and love to the novel.  For instance, the romance which develops between Landry and Topanga is quite touching and works in perfect juxtaposition to the main idea of the novel.  All that being said, as the main protagonist, Landry is obviously developed in the most depth.  The changes she experiences virtually make her character at the end of the story the complete opposite of the Landry we are introduced to at the outset.

Overall I found this to be a fantastic novel.  The reader cannot help but be emotionally entranced as they read each passing page with mouth agape!  There are some disturbing scenes which take place and some sexual content.  As such, it is recommended for adult readers.  However...recommended it most certainly is!

5 out of 5 Deadly Stars for this one!  *****

Short Summary of the book:
Landry Sinclair is a young career woman with little hope of upwards progression in her job. That is, until her superior is found murdered in a toilet. Unfortunately, her success does not last very long as she soon ends up in the murderous hands of a madman. But the story doesn’t stop there as she is forced to watch several other murders through the mirrors into the world of the living.
What I liked about the book:
I liked the alternative look at the after world in this book.
What I didn’t like about the book:
There wasn’t really anything I didn’t like in the book other than wanting to know what happens next.
My favourite bits in the book:
There were several favourite bits in the book. The ghosts are not powerless in this book, nor is romance all gone after death.
My least favourite bits in the book:
I enjoyed the entire book.
Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author?
The title suggests there are more books in this series. This author has also written Monte Vista Village, a completely different type of book. Both books I enjoyed very much.
What books could this be compared to and why?
I could compare this book to one I am currently writing myself. The idea for my book was already firm in my mind when I read this one. There are some other books this book could be compared to too, but the names escape me at the moment. It’s certainly a book worth reading.
Recommendation:
In summary, I would recommend this book for the following readers:

Children No
Young Adult Probably
Adult Yes

If you like Paranormal Crime stories this book may be the book for you.

I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Landry is a strong female character, lined up with a 5 year plan, and headed to the top of her corporation. From the very beginning, there's a sense of foreboding, or finality, with the opening of corporate cutbacks, and there are lots of suspects as no one is happy with Landry, or their state of affairs.

Landry next experiences a finality as she finds her boss dead in the bathroom, blood ok the floor, and her attempts to help her boss land her in the middle of the investigation. At the same time, she is whisked into her format bosses position and the tensions keep mounting.

Once Landry herself becomes a finality, life for her becomes looking from the other side of the mirror. She is headstrong in solving her murder as well as adjust to this whole new perception of death.

Lynn Lamb's novel left me thinking which side of the mirror are WE on. More importantly, how would we feel watching what's left of a life in ruin played out from behind a mirror where we were left to watch.

I had the distinct privileged of being a beta reader for Lynn Lamb. I will say I was so excited to read her book that I purchased it before she could give it to me free.

This book was well thought out, and I would invite you to be brave, and travel with Landry to a new concept of death. We all have to go sometime. Read this fantastic book and be lucky to return back to your life with hopefully a great read as well as new perceptions.

***Thank you SO much Lynn, and I look forward to beta reviewing ANY of your books in the future!***

The story is about Landy Sinclair, a woman living for her work at a large office. She's good at what she does but doesn't have much of a private life. During a rare night out with some colleagues, she gets drunk and wakes up naked, tied to a bed, in an unknown place. She is tortured and dies, but that is when it all starts.

Lullaby of the Dead is a great story about a strong woman who doesn't give up, doesn't give in, and certainly doesn't let anybody tell her what she can or can't do. Ms. Lamb's storytelling draws you in, making you want to read on to find out where her immensely creative mind is taking you next. Beside fantastical scenery, there is humor, horror, and love.

Don't miss out on reading this great story!

This book was absolutely fascinating!

From time to time, Landry isn’t likeable, but she is heartbreakingly human. She learns, grows, and evolves from an office worker into a warrior with a purpose.

This thriller/horror is well thought out in how all the supernatural elements work and interact with the real world. It was fascinating digging into each characters past and how they each feel about the present.

There is a bit of a love story in there, but I wouldn’t say it’s the focus, but rather the seasoning.

I’m eager to see how this world of the dead evolves throughout the series!

Lullaby of the dead

I chose to read this out of curiosity maily due to the title and found it to be an interesting and intriguing story that I simply could not put down. The fact that the main character was murdered and yet was somehow still there was like a rope tied to my leg. Deliberately tugging on it to keep me enthralled. The whole afterlife concept was remarkable.
Loved it.

Serial Killer, Ghost School & Parenting Evil

Lynn Lamb is one of my favorite indie authors. Her originality, creativity and understanding of how people truly behave, make her stories read like Japanese puzzle boxes with razor sharp action. She puts her characters through some intensely excruciating situations. I am left thinking about her endings for weeks after I stop reading.

Landry, a tech exec, gets murdered by someone she knows. He's a serial killer who just murdered her boss too. Landry wakes up in a house that looks like it has been abandoned.. What's a girl to do? She's dead, so this must be the afterlife. Can she get a different realtor? Landry is able to see her murderer along with her dead body in various mirrors in the house. Can she learn to contact him?

Lullaby of the Dead is so much more than the synopsis describes. Landry is a new ghost, so she has to learn the ropes just to fit in, but being hyper-competitive, she won't stop there. Nothing like an overachiever to stir up trouble, and then the fun begins.

On one level, it is a story about ghosts from many centuries looking for a way out. On another level, it is a woman's journey from loneliness and self judgement to confidence and acceptance, from life to death. On the third, it is the story of how one man's evil can echo through the centuries due to abuse, bad parenting, etc. The story also tackles the treatment of women, and the question of life after death.

Great read. Landry is a character I would happily follow through a series.
So where is book 2?

This was my first experience reading anything by this author, and I have to say, I'm really excited to read more. While the tone took a little bit of time to get used to (it strikes me as more formal than usual), once I did, I actually enjoyed it. It made for a very distinctive character voice, which I appreciate because it makes the story and character stick out in my head. The uniqueness of the subject matter was also impressive, because a lot of what you see nowadays is harping on old tropes, and while this book centers on a concept that is in no way new, it is the first time I've seen the afterlife approached in such a manner. I'm looking forward to the next installment!

This is a horror story. It is not an easy story to read because at times it deals with evil people who do great harm to the innocents who are now ghosts in a purgatory setting with Landry.

Her parents long dead, with no family or close friends, Landry Sinclair adopted an objectivist world view and focused her life on climbing the corporate ladder. She works in management at a cut-throat tech company where the bottom

Have you ever woken up with skittering dream still echoing? It had to be a nightmare, but you can't remember it and are grateful? This book is like that; what seems like a terrifying dream that turns out to be your new reality. At first, there is that skittering, you can't see clearly, and then you realize you can't leave; the nightmare is real.

This is the first Lynn Lamb book that I have read and it won't be the last.

In many ways, Ms. Lamb's writing style reminds me of Dean Koontz with an imagination resembling Stephen King. Like those two great authors, Ms. Lamb was able to captivate and enthrall me on page one and keep me turning pages, eager to know what happens next.

Lynn Lamb's characters are unique and unforgettable; her story intense, enjoyable and thought provoking. I have never thought of life after death in this way.

This was truly a dark fantasy readers delight and like all insatiable dark fiction readers, I immediately started another of her books, Mechaniclism.

Fantastically written unique view of the ever after...

Lamb brings her world building and creative writing skills to the table in a big way with this one.

Compassion, evil, perseverance, along with a myriad of other (good and bad) characteristics of humanity meld together.in this story in a most unique and unusual way.

I was immersed completely into the the world the strong female character found herself in.

Characters, the world and twisted storyline create palpable emotion throughout the entire book.

I look forward to the next book in this dark paranormal fantasy by the very talented Lynn Lamb.

The five stars I've rated it are well deserved indeed!
