Rate this book
Save humanity from itself. It is the goal of the worldwide conspiracy known as the Agents of Aeneas. For months they have struggled to unlock the mysteries of Paragon, an alien spacecraft buried on the Moon. Once a closely guarded secret, word of the craft has leaked, and now multiple forces plot to seize it for themselves.

Agent Marc Triton has breached its depths and returned alive. While Michael Flynn protects Marc from those who believe he knows too much, together they must confront a demon from their past: the freelancer Diomedes. Michael's violent ex-mentor, Diomedes has assassinated a man at the heart of the spacecraft's discovery. They must learn why.

Meanwhile, the vigilante Gideon, ruthlessly murdered six months prior, has been spotted alive in the city of Northgate. Seeking the truth behind his impossible return will draw Caitlin and Felix into dangers far beyond those that lurk on Earth.

Each of them driven by a memory, their fates will soon collide amid the blackness of Paragon...

About the author

Michael G. Munz

8 books109 followers
An award-winning writer of speculative fiction, Michael G. Munz was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Washington State in 1977 at the age of three. Unable to escape the state’s gravity, he has spent most of his life there and studied writing at the University of Washington.

Michael developed his creative bug in college, writing and filming four exceedingly amateur films before setting his sights on becoming a novelist. Driving this goal is the desire to tell entertaining stories that give to others the same pleasure as other writers have given to him. He enjoys writing tales that combine the modern world with the futuristic or fantastic.

Michael has traveled to three continents, and has an interest in Celtic and Classical mythology. He also possesses what most "normal" people would likely deem far too much familiarity with a wide range of geek culture, though Michael prefers the term geek-bard: a jack of all geek-trades, but master of none—except possibly Farscape and Twin Peaks.

Michael dwells in Seattle where he continues his quest to write the most entertaining novel known to humankind and find a really fantastic clam linguine.

This was a wonderful follow up to the first book. The plot thickens and mysteries deepen. I really enjoyed the first book in the series which introduced us to a fascinating realization of our near future. I thought this one was even better.

We get to learn about all sorts of wholly believable new technology which serves to both bring the world to life and advance the plot. The book keeps you guessing about what's going on right to the end and is hard to put down. I can't spoil any of the plot here, but I was constantly amazed as more and more details of what was actually going on got revealed.

One of my favorite parts about this book is the viewpoint transitioning. First off, we get to see from all sorts of characters viewpoints. I found this kept me reading from chapter to chapter just to find out what each person thought was going on as slightly more got revealed. Second, the transitions are great. You (almost? I didn't really keep track) always pivot at a scene from one character to the next.

It is as if in a movie the camera follows a character to a scene with other people, and then the camera just decides at a whim to start following a different person (...or maybe not even a person...) when they disperse. It allows there to be a really solid continuity in the story while also completely changing the viewpoint.

The whole book is filled with great stuff like this. I highly recommend this to anyone of the genre. If you liked the first one, this one is even better!

I love it when a plan comes together. With A Memory in the Black Michael Munz is pulling all of the pieces together. Diomedes, Gideon, The Agents of Aeneas and the spaceship on the moon it's all coming together preparing us for the third in the series.

This is great story contrasting corporate greed and corruption with the hope to save humanity from itself. I love the darkness that is exposed in A Memory in the Black, the depths that people will stoop to just to serve their own purpose. This makes for such a great contrast with the Agents of Aeneas, who want to save humanity (although some of them are only concerned with saving themselves and getting the heck out of Dodge).

A Memory in the Black had a great cast of characters. Diomedes is back and we learn a great deal more about him and what make him tick...tick...tick. Felix is back again to help keep everyone ground and insert the necessary comic relief. There are also a couple of surprises.

With some questions answered from A Shadow in the Flames. A Memory in the Black leaves us with others. Michael Munz, where is that next book?

A Memory of Gentle Words

I am taken with the author's ability to set atmosphere with words. In less than a sentence I am able to see, smell and feel the location. I read many books, this is a rare ability that is much appreciated.

Continues the story, as with part 1, the story and characters can be a little simplistic but it keeps moving nicely and is a decent enough read.

Science Fiction Thriller

In A Shadow in the Flames, Michael Munz introduced readers to a violent, futuristic world in which people routinely upgrade themselves with cybernetic enhancements. Michael and his roommate Diomedes, a freelance bodyguard, on the street and homeless, completed an assignment for a sinister stranger.

The action continues in A Memory in the Black.

Is Gideon back? But he died in The Shadow in the Flames. Didn't he?

At the same time, events continue to unfold on The Moon. The discovery of an alien spacecraft captures the attention of different factions. Who will end up with the spacecraft?

Master storyteller Michael Munz continues to ply his craft with A Memory in the Black. Colorful characters include Felix, an eccentric mercenary. A Memory in the Black: Book Two of the New Aeneid Cycle is even better than the first book, and leaves the reader eager for the next installment.

I sped through the first book and picked up the second and wasn't disappointed. There is a lot going on in this series, and Munz is adept at keeping the plot moving forward without missing a beat. I often grow frustrated with plot holes, but there were none. I enjoy the characters and can't wait for the next!

Amazing!! I will say I enjoyed this much more than the first book, and Felix continues to be my favorite character. There is so much in this book to be excited about. Travel, plans, memories missing. Wow so so much greatness!!
